Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

What is it with the combination of being a medical doctor and a “Muslim? That’s a very legitimate question to ask, in light of a certain event that unfolded at the end of last week in Virginia.

Dr. Esam Omeish, who in addition to being an “M.D.” was, up until last Thursday, a member of the Virginia State Commission on Immigration. He also happens to be president of the Muslim American Society. By all accounts an accomplished professional and a responsible contributor to his community, Dr. Omeish’s world changed, seemingly overnight, when some very damning video was discovered at Youtube Dot Com.

Turns out that back in August of 2006, Dr. Omeish delivered a speech before an Islamic rally in Washington D.C., and made some statements that, by any objective measure, are rather troubling.

First, the part that has people really upset. Dr. Omeish is seen on the video tape saying to his Muslim audience, "...you have learned the way, that you have known that the jihad way is the way to liberate your land."

Is this something that has been taken out of context? Sure it is. I’m only providing a partial quote here. But can we just be very candid and honest here, and admit that hearing a Muslim in America - - or anywhere else- - utter the word “jihad,” is rather unnerving?

Since the discovery of the video, Dr. Omeish has explained that this jihad flap is all a big misunderstanding. Responding to the outcry, Dr. Omeish stated “in Islam, jihad is a broad word that means constant struggle - struggling spiritually, emotionally, intellectually, physically - in all respects. So my words were in support of people who are resisting occupation and people who are trying to ... remove oppression from their land.”

Okay…so all us “non-Muslims” need to keep an open mind, and think in terms of a broader definition of “jihad.”

But what about some of the other rhetoric that appears on Dr. Omeish’s You Tube debut? Elsewhere on the recording Omeish states that the ‘invasion” of Lebanon and “support of the Israeli war machine” are criminal, and should end now. And that Israel is “illegally occupying Palestine.” And that the United States Congress has an “agenda” to support Israel, and that agenda is ‘controlling” U.S. foreign policy.

Oh, really? And since when has it become socially acceptable in the United States to assert conspiracy theories about the undue influence of Jews (isn‘t this as “old school“ and as offensive as saying that “the Jews control Hollywood?”). And how much further should this kind of rhetoric progress before we are legitimately concerned about “anti-Semitism?”

This incident certainly raises concerns about Virginia Governor Timothy Kaine’s vetting process, for appointing members to his state commission. But it also bares at least some resemblance to a set of circumstances that unfolded earlier this year in Europe.

Recall that on July 1 of this year, authorities in both England and Scottland reported the discovery of a terror plot involving Muslim physicians and their plans to wreak havoc at airports in both London and Glasgow. Fortunately the plot was thwarted. But it was bad enough to raise concerns at 10 Downing Street about the adequacy of background checks that were being conducted on so-called “professional immigrants” into the U.K.

Similarly, the “discovery” of Dr. Omeish’s inflamed rhetoric in front of his Muslim “brothers” should raise concerns here in the United States. It should, once again, cause Americans to question where the true, peace-loving Muslims are. It should cause us to ask why, among the voices of hostility and hatred, we are not hearing from those who call themselves by the name of “Allah,” yet are also able to agreeably disagree with those who do not share their faith tradition, and not wish them harm.

I dared to raise these questions myself, just last Friday in Washington, D.C. While guest hosting a talk show on ABC radio’s 630 WMAL (a station where I frequently “fill-in”), I asked these very same questions, even as the news of Dr. Omeish was breaking. And quite quickly, I was inundated with some very enlightening email and telephone calls, labeling me as a “Nazi,” “a pawn in the big Zionist propaganda machine,” and a “hate monger who is painting with a broad brush every Muslim on the planet.”

I hadn’t asserted anything - - I merely asked a couple of questions. If you’re going to ask the questions, be prepared to be so-labeled.

But the questions are still worth asking.

America Wake Up!!!
People in America need to Wake up! Read Oriana Fallaci's books The Rage and the Pride, and The Force of Reason or what is happening in "Eurabia" will happen here.

Wake Up
Has it right. I was there in August. I saw the hate in the eyes of the marchers. International ANSWER sponsored that rally. We kept asking the Lebanese people who were there why they were standing with communists. They had no idea ANSWER was a communist front group. I asked them why they supported a terrorist group like Hezbollah, who kill innocents. They said because they feed the people. I said so if I feed your people I can kill anyone I want?
No answer.
FREE LEBANON FROM HEZBOLLAH!!!!
END THE UNJUST OCCUPATION OF LEBANON BY SYRIA!!!!!!!
NO JUSTICE NO PEACE!!!!!

Hate to be a wet blanket.....
Has anybody counted lately? How many of the Hollywood directors, producers, actors, etc. are Jewish? I have no idea, but I suspect that the "the jews control Hollywood" claim may not be so far off the mark. (not that that's a bad thing...perhaps just a fact) It's certainly obvious that liberals control hollywood and the news media. Every time I watch a recent movie or hear a national news program I watch "telling one side of a story" in action. Regardless of what religion/political leaning/whatever is dominating our media, they need to start informing and stop manipulating. It's unprofessional, wrong and unamerican from the "freedom of speech" standpoint.

We're in some deep stuff already.
xx@@#%*!!

Let the Super Bowl Begin
This is the Mexican's problem not ours. The Muslims ultimately will have to fight the Mexicans to dicide which one will run AmeriKa. I can't decide which to cheer for, Sharia Law or Marxist law.

Do we really?
"jihad is a broad word that means constant struggle - struggling spiritually, emotionally, intellectually, physically - in all respects...

Okay…so all us “non-Muslims” need to keep an open mind, and think in terms of a broader definition of “jihad.”

No, we really don't.

In the Q'uran, Mohammed, in delivering his command declaring that jihad is incumbent on all Muslim males, is asked whether this command applies to the blind, or those too infirm to go to war? Mohammed declares that the elderly and infirm are released from that obligation.

Now, I am a pretty bright guy, but I have trouble imagining how it is possible that either the blind or the elderly are prevented from waging an inward, spiritual, emotional, intellecutal struggle along with their more able-bodied brethren.

The answer, of course, is that this theory of "inward" jihad is a dodge. It's a misdirection.

It's a lie.

"Jihad" means exactly what we think it does, and every time we buy into this particular falsehood, we give the jihadis an extra inch of ground.

Excellent Point, Gabby!
The freedom Americans enjoy, unfortunately, works in favor of our enemies. NINE ELEVEN proved that.

As Austin Hill indicates, Muslims' religous beliefs and "jihad" are thisclose. It's a frightening wake-up call. In Europe (if you can imagine it) things are even worse.

Nor long before is death, Winston Churchill noted that civilized, Western nations are "less-fit" in conflicts with terrorism. Concerning this he wrote, "This is not because of weakness or cowardice; it is because of restraint and virtue, and the way of life which we have lived......"

I fear the only way...
...we're going to be "awakened" will be by another major attack, one whose body count will make 9/11/01 look like mere child's play.

And you know these Islamist types. Deep down, they're like all terrorists... driven by ego and constantly trying to outdo each other.

Then the backlash and repressive measures will begin, and those will be terrible. There will be protests, but those will be squelched. Military enlistment will reach a post-WWII high, and even local militias will take form to join the effort.

The anti-war Left, or what remains of it, will be left with very few friends in high places. Some will choose to leave the country altogether. Others, while appearing to be cooperating with bringing America around to a full war footing, will be making their own secret plans for revenge.

All in all, what lies ahead for us will be a time which will try the souls of men... and not all will pass the test.

The problem here...
...is that most persons willing to comment at all about Muslim sympathies for the worst men and vilest causes in the world are using far too NARROW a brush.

All Muslims are religiously obligated to regard all "infidels" as the enemy: persons of untrustworthy motives, at the least. They're also obligated to work by any means expedient for a worldwide Caliphate, in which Islam is the only permissible religion. Force and fraud are entirely licit toward that end.

Any Muslim who dissents from these teachings, which are embedded in the Qur'an, is in effect declaring the Qur'an, the Word of Allah eternal and immutable, to be fallible -- and thus is no true Muslim. He's at the mercy of his co-religionists from that moment onward -- and you may be sure that he knows it.

We cannot civilize such persons. We can only quarantine them or exterminate them. "Take your choice -- there is no other -- and your time is running out."

Gandhi and the Muslims
I keep wondering where the Gandhis of the Muslim world are. There don't seem to be any.

JFP
You might as well ask where the vegetarians and vegans of the feline species are.

And the crowd went wild!
Omeish, and other 'moderate' Muslims and Muslim 'advocacy' groups routinely turn out to be wolves in sheep's clothing.

Of course.

Every Muslim in the world who can read reads the same version of Qur'an. For there is only one version. The same is true of hadith and sirah. And don't forget that the opinions and rulings of the traditional schools of Islamic jurisprudence make quite clear the meaning and intent of those texts.

Other that the language in which they're written, there is no difference between the Qur'an that Muhammad Ali reads and Usama bin Laden's copy.

There isn't an honest Muslim out there who doesn't know that Islam is a theocracy and a complete way of life.

No rational person can read Qur'an, hadith, and sirah without realizing that the Islamic way of life, at its fundamental core (which includes Islamic law), violates the U.S. Constitution and man-made American law.

Islam, as a theocracy and a complete way of life, is antithetical to the essence and principles of liberal Western democratic governance.

As a measure of how far Islam has been allowed to infiltrate the Western world, consider how loudly and eagerly Omeish's audience received his anti-semitic, pro Hizb'allah rant.

I suspect that Governor Kaine, in his search for another Muslim to place on Virginia's Immigration Commission, will remain, along with so many other politicians, oblivious to what Islam really is and what it really teaches.

Muslim doctors
Check out American Islamic Forum for Democracy headed by a doctor, M. Zuhdi Jasser.
zuhdi@aifdemocracy.org
This organization is a voice in the wilderness, and deserves support by all Americans.

The 11th Century Crusades are
still in the minds of Muslims world-wide. Muslims in this country, whether they realize it or not, are the powder keg waiting to explode whenever the Jihadists light the fuse.

We are sheep waiting to be slaughtered if we continue to believe in the goodness of mankind.
The really scary scenario is how Muslim doctors, and other "professionals" are working their way silently and steadily through the process of hegemony into our infrastructure. If anyone thinks that these people are snoozing while the world goes on about its life, you would be deadly wrong.

If we do not start thinking in terms of how to stop the spread of Islam in this country, first by legal methods, then if that doesn't work, by "any means necessary." We cannot continue to ignore this cancer that is silently metastasizing throughout our society.

Anyone who hasn't seen how liberals, world wide, have accorded the Jihadists every possible avenue into our societies is living with their head in the sand. Britian and France are prime examples of socialist countries who are, in all likelihood, in their last dying throes. We are in danger of the same fate.

jfp
there are no muslim gandhi's because the crazies kill any and all who disagress witht their notions theye are destined to rule the weorld. The wackjob mullahs that control these societies preach their message of hatred to a largely illiterate following that never hears an alternative to hating everything not muslim. If this so called religion of peace existed they would have shining examples in their own part of the world where they would be living in peace, holding hands and singing kumbaya. But other than vicious police states where do muslims live in peace except where they have minority status? The solution to world peace will entail the west finally waking up and realizing world peace and muslims are conflicting ideas and finally doing something about that problem

Governor Timothy Kaine
Like El Presidente Jorge Bush's appointment of Mel Martinez (Republican-Florida) to a non-existent post in the Republican National Committee for the import of more Mexicans, Governor Kaine, Democrat, selected a radical Muslim to the Immigration post in Virginia. Did Kaine think that more Irish or Swedish would be imported? Assimilation into the American scene? Not in 5,000 years - at least that is nearly as long as the Muslims have been trying to rid the world of Jews and Christians. Their appointments were for the purpose of adding more votes to the parties, irrespective of the appointees' goals. Someone please check the recommendations for appointment of Omeish. Was one of those the fabulous law breaker Jim Moran?

Dr. Jasser
Howard,

Dr. Jasser is, IMO, perpetuating the false impression that governance and religion can be separated in Islam.

I support him because he provides a home-grown Muslim counter to CAIR and other 'moderate' Muslim groups.

But I believe that as a Muslim, he's also presenting a fairey tale description of Islam. And that damages his credibility.

I think he would do better to point out those aspects of Islam which our Contstitution and laws prohibit.

Gunny
What irritates me is that the news media and "progressive" academic crowd, including self-styled "historians", are more than happy to let Muslim spokesmen pontificate about "the evil Crusades" of the 11th and 12th Centuries, but never get around to pointing out that the Crusades were a response to the 400+ years of military campaigns by the Islamic world against the West, culminating in the invasions of Europe that lasted until the early 17th Century.

Of course, most modern "history" books on the Crusades never mention that little detail, either. I know; I have several. Reading them without throwing them against the wall takes an effort of will at times.

Just once I'd like to see a news maven or a "progressive" academic ask a "moderate Muslim spokesman" about the Battle of Tours in 732 A.D., which definitely pre-dated the Crusades. (Even in the Islamic calendar.)

cheers

eon

11th Century
Please do not forget that the crusades were not fought to take Muslim land but to recalim land that had been Christian for 600 years before Islam existed. The rightful claim to most of the Mideast and North Africa is Christian or pagan.

The koran says that
muslims are allowed to lie to an infidel. Therefore I do not believe a word that's spoken by any of them.
This "religion of peace" is incompatible with our Constitution and should be considered nothing more than a very dangerous cult that is out to destroy our country and way of life.

The quicker we rid ourselves of this menace, the better.

muslim
is no such thing as a peace loving muslim, islam is unique in that all major religions of the world is the only one spread by the sword,no branch is islam has ever renounced jihad.when a non muslim nation or people are conquered the non believers have three choices, one convert to islam, two be a dihimmi{pay a non believer tax} or three be killed,i dont know about most people but i dont like any of those choices,i have no desire to be part of a violent religion that preaches nothing but hate

The "Good" Doctor
I just listened to an interview with Laura Ingraham and Michelle Malkin with Dr Esam Omeish that was done in October 2006. You can find it on Hot Air or by Googling this doctor's name. After seeing the other tape with the jihad rant and then hearing this doctor being interviewed, along with Michele Malkin, by Laura Ingraham back in October, it's quite unsettling.

Wonder what his non-Muslim patients think?

Gabby
Look for Self-Preservation to take precedent.

The Iraq battlefield! Iran on deck! And,of course, the continued threat of attacks here.

These grave matters won't go away soon but I think we're nearing the "Middle Game". End Game? Not in sight.

No question America faces the greatest test in it's history.

The real question is this: Is America ready?

The only hope
there is, regarding Muslims 'taking over America', is that the citizenry here is armed, and considers itself "free"( we could argue that). And, as a practical matter, the physical size of the U.S is daunting. If they're coming for us, they're in for a helluva fight.
And, honestly, quite a few of us are up for it.

"Religion of Peace"---Don't believe it!
A "moderate moslem" is one who just hasn't turned "radical" yet. Any moslem who wants to remain a moslem has to eventually turn radical because that's what Islam is all about. Sure they are peaceful with each other but they are not supposed to be with others outside the Islamic faith. The Quaran says this. If the infidels do not want or will not convert then they can/should kill us. Any faith who has as their holy man (Muhamad) a man who was a child molester and one who at one time thought his revelations might come from the devil instead of God is a dangerous man to follow and revere. I am really worried every time I hear some politician say Islam is a religion of peace for it's not so. The United States will not realize this until it's to late.

They are Everywhere
The Muslim jhiadists are infiltrating every aspect of our country and society. I have had a personal experience that prompted me to do research into some of our largest corporations and they have infiltrated them via owning stock & being on the boards of some of the largest companies in the world. This is the scariest of all. I am sure everyone of you writing on this site have been listed on a list to kill when we wake up one day like the Jews did in '39 only to find they (Islam/Muslims) are in complete control of all parts of our society.

Robert,
You seem like a fun guy.

I blog with a large list of friends here on Townhall and a huge percentage of them have served or currently serve in the military. My many liberal friends, on the other hand, could never handle the military -- they sleep late, get stoned and pontificate about the need to 'go green.' One in particular loves sheep and goats more than human babies.

Why have I not enlisted, yet support the war anyway? Well, I have a two-year old son and a newborn baby who nurses. I'm nearly 40 and have terrible eyesight. Not everybody has to enlist, that's silly. But I'm glad many young and healthy people do! I have three nephews in the Army or Marines. Sorry, but they are much more useful physically to war efforts than a 40 year old woman who is breastfeeding. I'd be in the way, I'd be a liability. If my glasses broke or my contacts fell out, I could not see past my nose, literally.

Not everyone CAN do the rigorous physical things expected as a soldier. But that does NOT mean we can't support the cause.

So... 'go enlist' is just the latest lame catch-phrase of the anti-war left.

Love ya,

Squiddy

There is some truth
Robert writes: Sunday, September, 30, 2007 10:12 AM

to what you say. Enlistments are not setting any records, and deep down, most Americans don't give a hoot what happens anywhere else in the world, as long as they can live life as they choose.
Right-wingers beat the war drum as the warriors march off to battle. Unfortunately the warriors have all left but the drummers keep on drumming, looking down the road for the next group of warriors. They need to drop their drumsticks and pick-up a rifle.

But don't be too harsh on the courage of your fellow Americans. I get to see the results of the violence they can do to each other on a regular basis. They would do much worse to someone whom actually threatened their life!

PK and his wet blanket
What gives you the idea left wing Jews support Israel? Usually, they support the Palestinian terror machine. And certainly the major media support the Palestinian cause, as does Hollywood. Leftists of all religions tend to be anti-American and anti-Israel.

Back to Dr Omeish
The man stated Jihad means struggle and that is correct. If you don't think Palestinians have a struggle you don't know what is going on. As one jewish writer put it if Israel would live within their borders and build their wall around their borders then the the problems could be resolved. But they are not. They extend the wall into the West Bank to encompass water supplies, grab prime farm land and separates palestinians famers from
their farm lands. They Bulldose Palestinian homes and orchards to build their wall to other prime areas. They occupy and continue to build Jewish settlements in the West Bank that the UN call illegal. They have built check points. To go on a drive that would take 2 hours in the US takes three days waiting in lines to move through check pointsl. Struggle Indeed. I suspect if you lived under those circumstances you would struggle too.

We can't win without them!
Since I do not believe we can win the war on terror or the war in Iraq without the goodwill and active paticipation of millions of followers of the Muslim faith I really wonder if this argument is worth having. If we can't work with Muslims we may as well pack up and go home. they are not going away or converting and there is no way we can win without them. If you fan the flames of civilizational clash long enough you will arrive at just that. If the enemy is Islam I fear for my children's future. Religous wars tend to go on forever and ever. I perfer that status quo of somewhat oppresive regimes that keep their fanatics under control and sell us oil. Who knows with a little luck most of the middle east could look like Kuwait or the UAE after a generation of two.

Robert writes...
>If you have served I would never question your service.

Maybe you wouldn’t, maybe you would. The vast majority of your comrades on the “liberal” blogs certainly would, and do. They take great pride in denigrating those who serve in our military. The left has a long history of “dissing” the military. As a Vietnam Vet, I’ve seen it first hand.

>The vast majority of uber right wingers have not. The leaders of the uber right wing have not, and that includes our President.

Same could be said of the (you?) “commie” left wingers. The main difference between those on the right who’ve never served and those on the left who’ve served is the level of respect shown for those in military service. I have much more respect for someone who’s never served but respects and appreciates those in the military, than I do for those who think it’s their patriotic duty to disrespect the military.

BTW, President Bush flew jets in the military, what exactly have you done in the service of your country?

And spare us your “talking points” history lessons. The Japanese in WWII were as fanatical and determined in their struggle for world dominance as the Islamic Imperialists are in theirs, and we know how well that struggle went for the Japanese.

The difference between then and now, is that back then didn’t have a significant portion of population thinking and behaving like you.

>As for the folks "taking them on if they get here"...that is nonesense.

So, are you saying you wouldn’t take up arms to defend you fellow countrymen, if it came to that? Or would we find you bent low on prayer rug facing eastward?

>That is why Moslem activist from around the world are flocking to Iraq...and the far right is blogging.

And that’s why we’re there killing them. Those of us who read and post here do so to combat the insidious blather of people like you. We consider it a duty and an honor to stand against the glib, liberal defeatists in our ranks.

Inward: To look inward to over come the natural urge to flee danger.

Spiritual: To determine that you are morally right in your cause and the sacrifice is for a cause greater than self.

Emotional: To subdue the compassion one might feel for human you are about to kill.

Intellectual: To understand the consecuence of your actions.

Struggle: War.

It sounds like the necessary preparations for war.

Thank the 1 Percent
Not factoring in all of the many retirees, prior military and other patriots who were unable to serve in the military, we now have an active duty military that constitutes about 1 percent of our national population.

So, the slogan for today is

Of course you neglect to mention that Israel has had to fight off 4 or 5 nations at a time, also that the reason for all the checkpoints are to stop the children of these people who would strap bombs onto their own children and send them off to kill Israel’s children in a crowded market place, or that the people in Israel live in constant fear of rocket attacks that the Palestinian's have their children move around so they don't draw the fire to them self's. Why is it that no other Arab/Muslim population will take in the "Palastinians?" They are a permanent displaced people because it serves the purpose of the Islamists. Do a little study about what is really going on before you spout off on how Israel is the big meany.

How many times has Israel given up land for peace, only to be attacked with worse loss of life when the 'rightful' Palastinians set up their rockets from closer in?

If your neighbor stated repeatedly that he would not rest til you and your house was burned to the ground, and continually broke your fence and lobbed grenades into your yard, killed your children and demanded more and more of your home property, what would you do?

Unfortunate truth.
Religious dogma: "Everyone for themselves"...there is little group sacrifice or little summoning effort for the common good.

Everyone on the left subscribe to the "only the government can save us from the evil everyone else does". Their is no greater evil than the government being "fair", than the government demanding "the common good", than the government deciding lifes winners. Even worse deciding lifes losers based on their determination of "fair".

Religious dogma: "The world will be a better place if we improve ourselves, and sacrifice of our own accord and to the best of our abilities"

Everyone on the right believes the world starts with the "man in the mirror", not the government hand out. Everyone on the right believes that people are a better avenue of change than the government.

Freedom of choice is the gift you have now. Choose the religious dogma you want to follow. Do it now, before its too late.

Read the stuff that "he" told the 9/11 hijackers...about how if they killed a female flight attendant, (they picked a middle aged one for a reason) and then threatened to kill another one...that even if the people found out that they were going to die, they would do nothing.

The tragedy of today's america (and I lay this partially at the feet of the right wing) is that today's america is more or less "Everyone for themselves"...there is little group sacrifice or little summoning effort for the common good.
OK ROBERT
Tell me the name of the last person to die on flight 93. You know the ones that STOOD UP and decided to take a chance to die instead of letting the arsehats fly that plane into another building AFTER they found out that it was not a regular hijacking? Robert, I place this attitude squarely at the feet of the left. The feminization of the American male is a direct result of the feminists and "child-psychologists" that won't let boys be boys and condemn discipline in favor of coddling.

But that's another subject.

Its really time to begin the discussion.
Do we really want to invite anymore of these members of "the religion of peace" into our nation? And shouldn't we consider some sort of resolution in our congress that mandates revocation of any green cards or visa's for any, like the good doctor, who show signs of radicalism or bad behavior? DD

What keeps bringing yoiu anti semites to these threads. Exactly how many billions in aid must the palestineans be given and how many opportunities to live in peace before they finally get the message they can live in peace. But in the muslim world hatred is their primary currency. The palistineans have long been the most despised group in the me after of course the jews. No body wants them even their own country, Jordan. They have for the past 60 years been the pawns and stooges for the rest of the haters from the region. If these adherents of this so called religion of peace actually believe their own lies where have they created one country that isn't run by despots who rely on prisons and secret police to keep their dissidents under control. They all believe that their destiny to to unite the world under the all controlling rule of sharia and if they have to kill off all of the west to achieve that, that's just too bad. The only thing that makes it better is if they can die for jihad and get to their perverted vision of sexual paradise, where they will find that all the 72 virgins are named omar.

Robert, the real point is that the desired response to a hijacking, at that time was to co-operate with the hijackers. The feminization of America, though a real phenom, could not be blamed for what occured.

So, RATbert, you lose the argument and your esteem in the eyes of those who are familiar with the true history of what occured.

FergusMacLennan
FergusMacLennan. You are spot on. You have a great way of seeing through Mohammad’s BS.

Robert, what do you mean by 'vole'?
I thought a vole was a rodent, can't find a dictionary definition of 'to vole', so I don't know exactly what you mean.

And it's great that you know some people who made sacrifices to go fight as soldiers. That still does not make it right for a nursing mother who is almost 40 and not in good physical condition (nearly blind) to go into combat. In fact, I think mothers -- no matter their health status -- serve the country better when they raise their own children rather than leave them to others to raise.

It's better for me to actually be with my own babies to raise future defenders of freedom. Maybe the people who I would have babysit them can go enlist. Or all those young college students sitting in class getting drenched in leftist 'intellectual' garbage and wearing Che t-shirts.

Again, not everyone has the physical makeup to be a good soldier. But I'm glad we have a lot of young, healthy people who can and do serve.

Our president himself declares Islam to be a religion of peace. That presumes there are moderate Muslim clerics within the religion.

Increasingly, our effort in Iraq is for "hearts and minds". A main feature of the surge is to embed our forces with native Iraqis, to gain their trust, and to encourage them to turn against the "radicals".

I have become adamantly opposed to the Iraq invasion, and its aftermath. I cannot stomach most of the policies of this administration(even as I equally despise the democrats...especially their allegiance with enviro-radicals whose policies would ruin our economy). But on Iraq, I simply don't believe it is worth the cost in American lives, Iraqi lives, and the astronomical cost to the U.S. treasury(and the financial health of our nation). And for what? So they can vote in a Shia theocracy?

But before you attack Bill Richardson for reaching our to moderate muslims, maybe you ought to examine the policies of our president, and the focus of our strategy in Iraq, for that is exactly what he is doing(in reaching out to the "moderates"...assuming they exist, of course). And I am not sure that assusmption is warranted.

In the recent poll, 35% had a negative view of Muslims, while in 2004 that figure had been 32%...

So, you flew jets for the real military? Maybe you did, maybe you didn’t. Care to provide some details?

I’m sure our National Guard will appreciate your labeling them as something less than real soldiers. BTW, just how many Guard units do we have serving in Iraq right now?

As for my military service I spent a year with the 498th Dust Off flying out of An Son, Vietnam Nam.

Frankly, Robert, much of your rebuttal post is gibberish.

Robert writes: “My everyday fly days are long over...and I didnt support this war...but as dead Dad is fond of saaying "number 1 always steers to the sound of the guns when they start going off"

That series of non-sequiturs is almost comical.

Sorry to burst your bubble there, Robert, but killing the enemy is how you win wars. The failure of the American Left to grasp that simple, but critical, concept speaks volumes about the moral confusion that guides it.

Robert writes: “Military efforts enable diplomacy and poltiical solutions. Somethign that this administration like you has forgotten.”

Bursting another of your bubbles here, Robert: Military VICTORIES enable … political solutions. And how utterly asinine for you to indict this administration for “forgetting” your bogus notion of "military efforts"; were it not for this administration there would be no “military efforts” to bring about a political solution--and under the Clinton model of "military efforts" we'd still be trying to subpoena witnesses and make arrests for 9/11. You know, the "Bring 'em to Justice" school of conflict resolution.

BTW, don’t get you panties in a twist, I wasn’t “lecturing” you about you military service—I’ll wait for you to enlighten me about it—I was asking what you’d done to serve your country.

SEARCHING FOR TRUTH, JUSTICE AND PEACE

ANTI-SEMITISM IS EVIL, just as is anti-any-ethic-group. But what about ANTI-ISRAEL, based on the behavior of that nation?

We Americans need to stop playing word games. For example, if we apply Webster's definition of "TERRORISM" to the already-forgotten recent Middle East war between Israel and Hezbollah, and use OBJECTIVE MEASUREMENTS, then Israel and not Hezbollah was the biggest terrorist in this tragedy, with 50 to 1 non-combatant deaths for Lebanon vs. Israel (2/3 of Israeli dead were soldiers), and an even greater disparity in terms of infrastructure and the long-term suffering of people. Israel could have fought Hezbollah up close and personal, but instead involved a million innocent Lebanonese in an asymmetrical war using United States-supplied warplanes and smart bombs.

Of course, the word terrorism is reserved for our enemies, and not part of our terms of endearment with Israel. However, before we consign what happened to Lebanon and its people to "collateral damage" and it completely fades from our short attention span, perhaps we can find a more appropriate term to describe ravaged Lebanon, such as "collateral devastation." As the pendulum of action and reaction/cause and effect swings our way, we won't just sit and wonder why these terrible terrorists hate us and want to kill us (they do 9-11, we do Lebanon, and so on).

Human beings think and rationalize in words. For this reason, words decide issues. Many people use words imprecisely or for advantage, and not for truth. The prime example here, anti-Semitism and anti-Israel are not the same thing. If they were the same, then the Israeli government would be infallible. Israeli tough-guy terror (seen often, even on American TV) is about half the reason the United States is hated in the Middle East. Unfortunately, we have to go along too because no one can speak the truth of words and reality. Our one-sided policy in the Middle East is a disaster.

we are at war, and it is not with Bush. This WAR is for REAL! Dr. Vernon Chong, Major General, USAF, Retired

Tuesday, July 12, 2005
To get out of a difficulty, one usually must go through it. Our country is now facing the most serious threat to its existence, as we know it,
that we have faced in your lifetime and mine (which includes WWII).

1. When did the threat to us start? As far as
the United States is concerned in 1979, 22 years prior to September 2001, with the following attacks on us:

* Iran Embassy Hostages, 1979;
* Beirut, Lebanon Embassy 1983;
* Beirut, Lebanon Marine Barracks 1983;
* Lockerbie, Scotland Pan-Am flight to New York 1988;
* First New York World Trade Center attack 1993;
* Dhahran, Saudi Arabia Khobar Towers Military complex 1996;
* Nairobi, Kenya US Embassy 1998;
* Dares Salaam, Tanzania US Embassy 1998;
* Aden, Yemen USS Cole 2000;
* New York World Trade Center 2001;
* Pentagon 2001.

(Note that during the period from 1981 to 2001 there were 7,581 terrorist
attacks worldwide).

2. Why were we attacked?

Envy of our position, our success, and our freedoms. The attacks happened during the administrations of Presidents Carter, Reagan, Bush
1, Clinton and Bush 2. We cannot fault either the Republicans or Democrats as there were no provocations by any of the presidents or their
immediate predecessors, Presidents Ford or Carter.

3. Who were the attackers? In each case, the attacks on the US were carried out by Muslims.

4. What is the Muslim population of the World? 25%.

46. So who are we at war with?

There is no way we can honestly respond that it is anyone other than the Muslim terrorists. Trying to be politically correct and avoid verbalizing
this conclusion can well be fatal. There is no way to win if you don't clearly recognize and articulate who you are fighting.

Bull; if you knew anything, you would know that the nva did not want charlie wiped out, fact is some of them fought alongside charlie during TeT.
If they had political differences, the nva would have waited until the US was gone, the south was defeated, and then sent charlie to re-education camps if necessary! Heck they even sent POW's to their re-education camps., and they DID NOT like us!

one point and PK
One point Islam means surrender, not peace. Think about it. Once you have surrendered, then you get "peace".

Jews spend a lot of time discussing what is a Jew. Unfortunately, Jews that attract attention, very rarely are well educated in their faith. Maybe they like to eat smoked meat with mustard and rye bread, not with mayo on white bread with cheese like Noah's will now serve one if one wishes. As Michael Medved lately said on radio, the fact that Rabbi Lerner had Cindy Sheehan who has nothing to do with Judaism, give a sermon on Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the year, goes to prove that reform Judaism is more an institution of perpetuating Leftism than of perpetuating Judaism.
Therefore talking about Jews controlling Hollywood is a fallacious topic. Furthermore you are pretty much quoting Ahmadinejad who also said that Jews control Europe, the same Europe that killed 1/3 of all Jews world wide not too long ago. If that is control, give me no control, thank you very much.

Robert,
Were you in Vietnam in 1972? What unit were you in?

At the time, the US had only about 40,000 troops in country. In April, the NVA launched the Eastertide Offensive attacking the South with a conventional force of 200,000 soldiers, artillery and tanks. Those ARVN soldiers you so casually malign defeated a communist force twice the size of the VC uprising we put down during Tet. General Giap was fired.

Robert, 1 of 2...

debishop asks: Care to provide some details of you military service?

Robert, the mysterious, replies: “not any more then I have. I enjoy being able to "post" without blog restrictions from the DoD and the UCMJ.”

debishop replies: What a horse’s as*. As if the DoD cares about a self-aggrandizing leftist blogger who thinks it’s his patriotic duty to call our President an idiot. New bulletin: the DoD has bigger fish to fry.

Also, you seem to be laboring under a terrible misconception about just whom it is we are at war with. The fact that Iraq may not have had anything to do with 9/11 is irrelevant to the global struggle we are engaged in. Iraq just happens to be the current front-line in this war. Get over it. The fact the jihadies are coming to Iraq to join their brother jihadies in martyrdom is a bonus for our side. Hopefully, we’ll kill all of them, too.

Robert, the intrepid, writes: “There was no civilized diplomatic solution to the YUGO crisis until Mr. Clinton applied the correct military force and presto there was a diplomatic solution that was quite nice. It kept Al Queda off of a Moslem civil war in Europe and stabilized the belly of Europe.”

debishop replies: You must be joking! Clinton took us into a true civil war fighting on the side of the Muslims, against the Serbs, who’d done nothing to us. And if you think the Muslims are through with the “belly of Europe” you’re a bigger dolt than you’ve let on. The only reason Central Europe is quite today is because all the jihadies are heading to Iraq. Hopefully, to be killed.

Robert, 2 of 2...

Robert, the indignant, writes: I called Mr. Bush and the fighting 147th of his era (and actually today) as not real soldiers.

debishop replies: Robert wrote that he was in “the real military not the one that guarded Houston from the Commies.” Sounds to me like you’re calling the Guard fake soldiers. I’ll leave it to them to decide.

Robert, the insightful, writes: “NOPE. It doesnt matter how many of [your enemy] you kill if you dont achieve the political objective that caused you to kill them.”

debishop replies: So, exactly what “political objective” was achieved by our killing tens of thousands of Japanese soldiers & civilians prior to their unconditional surrender at the end of WWII? The political objective, a peaceful, democratic Japan, wasn’t achieved until “after” the military victory was secured. Look it up, Robert, it’s in the history books.

BTW, I noticed you shifted away from our war with Japan to our military adventure in YUGO (is that they call it at the DoD & UCMJ?). Is that the playbook for the MOO (Move-On.Org) crowd—when one war scenario doesn’t work shift the focus to another? Must be.

Robert, the historian, writes: “We killed far more of Charlie then he of us and yet we never achieved the political center of gravity We could have killed 1/2 million more and still lost.”

debishop replies: Wrong. The Political Center of Gravity that was lost wasn’t in Viet Nam, it was in Washington D.C., (in no small part thanks to the efforts of the American Left). There were a number of reasons why we lost in Vietnam and they all had to do with America politics, not the military dedication of the Communist.

Robert, the academician, writes: “I teach.”

Dbishop replies: God help us.

Can you win without them?
Since I do not believe we can win the war on terror or the war in Iraq without the goodwill and active paticipation of millions of followers of the Muslim faith I really wonder if this argument is worth having. If we can't work with Muslims we may as well pack up and go home. they are not going away or converting and there is no way we can win without them. If you fan the flames of civilizational clash long enough you will arrive at just that. If the enemy is Islam I fear for my children's future. Religous wars tend to go on forever and ever. Does anybody really think we can win without them.

no peaceful Muslims
Forget looking for or asking about peaceful Muslims. If you live a city of any size you will find that you have a branch of the Islamic Brotherhood organization in your community. Their stated goal is to place this country under Islam.

I find a great simularity between the Islamic methods and rhetoric and that that came out of the former Soviet Union and her Warsaw Pact allies.

There ideals have little to do with theology and more to do with raw power and wielding it. Saul Alinsky would be pleased.

muslim hatred and aggression from Koran
To those self-flagellators who think that the Western world, mainly America, represented a continuing provocation to Arabs, which accounts for their acts of terrorism against us, I suggest you read the following book that is well written, fully documented, and easy to read. You will conclude, it is not our fault.

Power, Faith, and Fantasy
America in the Middle East 1776 to the Present
By Michael B. Oren

The earliest documented attacks by Islamic Pirates against the victims from the New World occurred in 1625.

In 1785, 9 years after United States declared independence from Britain and no longer was defended by the British Navy, United States merchant shipping to the Mediterranean had been at the mercy of the Islamic pirates along the Barbary Coast. (The Barbary Coast is the coast of North Africa comprising approximately Morocco, Tunisia, and Libya). Since the United States had no navy to protect it’s merchant shipping; it was forced to pay bribes for protection to the local warlords of the Islamic pirates. Notwithstanding the bribes, many ships were seized and American sailors enslaved.
Abd al-Rahman, a nobleman who represented the pasha of Tripoli said: "it was … written in the Koran, that all nations who should not have acknowledged their (the Muslims’) Authority were sinners; that it was their right and duty to make war upon whoever they could find and make slaves of all they could take as prisoners, and that every Musselman (the prevalent term for Muslim) who should be slain in battle was sure to go to paradise."

Thanks for that link. In deed, I'm smiling already, Firts because of the link, and second (but more hilarious) for all of Robert's posts! He never gives up...

The one thing I haven't seen discussed in the thread, and maybe I missed it, is the inability of Islam to reform, or progress forward. Most major religions have gone through a reformation of some sort, be it harsh like the Inquisition, or gentle like the shift in Buddhist Thought. Because the Koran is absolute, there seems a consensus by the majority of Muslims that the way it is written will be so for eternity. This is very dangerous, for it doesn't allow anyone room to conform.

Bobby
Stop calling me that!

Many good points
Many have made excellent points in response to and about the article. Others have behaved as verbal bomb throwers! I do not want to mention names as it only encourages them.

I am tired of those who come to TH knowing they will disagree with every article. Then, instead of a reasoned, intelligent point by point debate of the article, they engage in ridiculous efforts to shut others up. It is past old!!!

Any time a conservative asks about the "moderate Muslim's" silence, we get rants, and never do we get a satisfactory answer from the liberals.

Re; Robert: A Delusional Psychotic
Re: Delusional Robert.
Ive encountered this delusional nut case on other TH blogs. Here are the facts on him. He’s smart, knows how to use the internet to be well informed on a given topic, and is psychotic. And I mean this in the truest definition. In previous posts he claims to be the following: A Navy Captain, a Navy test pilot, a civilian test pilot for Boeing, an FAA airline inspector, and hinted at being an astronaut. When asked to verify specific claims, he never responds. Instead he gives letter grades to those he disagree with. So if you receive a C, D, or F from this whack job, you can be sure you’re on the correct side of the issue.
My best advice is to just ignore this delusional psychotic.

It would be easy to ignore Robert, but speaking for myself, I find him very entertaining. It makes me thankful each day that the Good Lord has left my faculties intact.

Bobby
I'm going to take a nap, then I'll fire the missiles!

for JFP
JFP asks: "I keep wondering where the Gandhis of the Muslim world are. There don't seem to be any."

The Islamists have a zero-tolerance policy for them.

In the Levant, for example, any Palestinians who go on the record as publicly advocating peace with Israel are assassinated. (And if they're really unlucky, their families are butchered too.)

Remember what happened to Anwar Sadat. He signed a peace treaty with Israel--and was assassinated shortly thereafter.

for Robert
Robert writes: "The tragedy of today's america (and I lay this partially at the feet of the right wing) is that today's america is more or less "Everyone for themselves"...there is little group sacrifice or little summoning effort for the common good."

That's ABSURD.

When faced with fear and extreme danger, it's a common human reaction to be paralyzed by it--the "deer in the headlights" reaction.

How many Jews were murdered by the Nazis in WW2, BEFORE any Jews revolted against them at Warsaw and Treblinka? Thousands, maybe a couple of million, of Jews silently marched into concentration camps and then into gas chambers without turning on their oppressors.

Go read the book "Treblinka", by Jean Steiner--the Nazis, like the al-Qaeda hijackers, had planned how to forestall revolts against them:

1. Divide and conquer: Yes, kill a few captives to instill fear, but assure the others that you'll let them live if they cooperate, so they will separate themselves mentally from your victims.

2. Take full control of the situation and move your captives from one step to another so they get used to taking orders from you--till the final order when they have to die.

The result? The Nazis murdered millions successfully with only a handful of attempted revolts.

for Robert
Robert writes: "When the right wing Reverends say "Evil MOslems are going to kill us" the answer of the far right is "we will send the army...which doesnt include us"."

No, that was BUSH's answer!!!

Stop confusing the entire American right-wing with Bush.

We conservatives went along with Bush's strategy for the War on Terror, out of a combination of patriotism and GOP party loyalty. And so we accepted things that he did which were actually AGAINST our better judgment.

I was home on 09-11-2001 and I got to watch the entire horrible thing unfold live on TV. I can assure you that if anyone had asked me how to respond to that attack, I would NOT have said "Let our Army handle it while I go out and shop and buy gas for my SUV." I would NOT have said "We gotta win the hearts and minds of those Muslims." I would NOT have said "Islam is a religion of peace."
I would NOT have met with leaders from the Council on American-Islamic Relations, a notorious Saudi Wahhabist front, like Bush did.

I winced when I heard Bush saying and doing those things. So did a lot of other conservatives. But to paraphrase Rumsfeld, "you go to war with the President you've got."

My problem with Robert is that the "facts" he cites are often either not true or only half-true. With Robert you can't just argue his logic, you have to fact-check his basic facts.

When Robert asserts how something "really" happened during WW2 or the Gulf War or whatever, I advise you to open a history book or do a Google search and check it out for yourself.

You may not agree with my stands on issues, but at least I try hard not to post historical falsehoods in an attempt to prove my case.

Muslims
Here are a whole bunch of Muslims who speak against terrorism.

http://groups.colgate.edu/aarislam/response.htm

Also, it seems we could have some sympathy for Palestinians as many Israelis do.

"And what about the unborn babies? They weren't safe either. A bullet in the back of Maha Qatuni, a woman who was seven months pregnant and got up during the night to protect her children in their home, struck her fetus in the womb, shattering its head. The wounded mother lay in the Rafidiya Hospital in Nablus, hooked up to numerous tubes. She was going to name the baby Daoud. Does killing a fetus count as murder? And how "old" was the deceased? He was certainly the youngest of the many children Israel killed in the past year."

Speaking for myself, I have been aware of the Islamic religion since November 4, 1979. I differ with your claim that Muslims are no different than Christians. Holding a degree in Anthropology, specializing in Religions, makes me somewhat knowledgeable on the subject. I have had many interactions with Muslims, the most notable was Khalid, who told me I didn't belong in class because of my gender. This was in 1987. It would have been funny, if he hadn't been serious. I suggest you stop painting everyone as a racist. It doesn't do your argument any favors. And before you think otherwise, I s
