Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

John Kerry's "Christmas in Cambodia" yarn ignited the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth. Whatever your memory of the 2004 presidential campaign, Kerry's sudden silence about a wartime Christmas "seared" in his memory was a rare example of a citizens group (the Swifties) publicly backing down a powerful U.S. senator and a major-party presidential candidate.

Kerry's full quote, delivered in the midst of a 1986 Senate debate about aid to the Nicaraguan Contras, is rhetorically powerful:

"I remember Christmas of 1968 sitting on a gunboat in Cambodia. I remember what it was like to be shot at by Vietnamese and Khmer Rouge and Cambodians, and have the president of the United States telling the American people that I was not there; the troops were not in Cambodia. I have that memory which is seared -- seared -- in me."

Glorious oratory indeed, based, unfortunately, on a touch of truth (his naval service) magnified by chest-pounding falsehood.

There were, however, no cameras recording Christmas in the Mekong estuaries, which left Kerry with wiggle room. That's all a politician ever needs, of course, a silly centimeter of wiggle room. He accused the Swift vets of being motivated by partisan malevolence and personal animosity rather than historical veracity.

Kerry was dead right on the personal animosity angle. I still run into Vietnam veterans who rile at a memory "seared" in their minds -- that of Kerry pulling his made-for-television "Winter Soldier" routine, where he accused American soldiers of hideous war crimes. He rode those anti-American allegations into a political career.

Hillary Clinton is having her "Cambodian" moment -- her claim that she ducked sniper fire when she landed in Bosnia in 1996. Cameras, however, were rolling. The CBS News clip juxtaposing Clinton's stump speech rendition of her "snipers tale" to the tender hugs reality of her Bosnian excursion exposes the candidate's story as blarney.

This is blarney with damaging blowback, since Clinton's claim to superiority over her Democratic primary opponent, Barack Obama, is she possesses hard-core foreign policy expertise.

CBS earns qualified kudos. An Obama supporter, the comedian Sinbad, pulled the magic carpet from beneath Clinton's Bosnian crock. Sinbad was with Clinton in Bosnia, and he told a Washington Post political blog that "I think the only 'red-phone' (i.e., scary) moment was, 'Do we eat here or at the next place?'"

It appears that crack journalistic fact-checking by a major network did not catch Clinton -- breaking the duplicitous news took a celebrity anecdote relayed to a political gossip column in the midst of a nasty internecine Democratic Party political war. CBS had a reporter with Clinton in 1996 and a tape. Clinton has told "the sniper's tale" on several previous occasions. Next time, maybe ...

Obama has his own problems with truth in packaging. We have learned the electrifying candidate of "hope" has a political debt to "hate" -- and Chicago's sleazy political machine.

Excusing the videotaped anti-American hate speech of the Rev. Jeremiah Wright as hot rhetoric reflecting deep historical suffering may pass muster in the Democratic primaries, but should Obama obtain the nomination, come November he will be running for president of the nation Wright insistently damned. If he really wants to become leader of the Free World, he will dump Wright sometime in September and acknowledge embedded bitterness stalls change?

As for John McCain? If he faces Clinton in November, expect to see her sniper's tale video followed by Vietnam War footage of McCain climbing into his Navy jet. If McCain faces Obama and "suffering" becomes an issue, a nuanced mind must ask if Harvard is a greater hell than Hanoi.

McCain is encountering the Alzheimer's innuendo for his claim (now retracted) that Iran supports al-Qaida in Iraq. He will have to take that heat. The al-Qaida-Iran relationship is very murky. Al-Qaida has numerous "affiliates," and Iranian intelligence has contacts with radical Sunni Muslim organizations (the Ayatollah Khomeini originally claimed his was an Islamic revolution, not a Shia revolution). But as for definitively aiding al-Qaida in Iraq, he was wise to retract. As for his age, nope, you can't retract a birth certificate.

While Clinton and Obama tread the political gutter, McCain ought to continue his global trek. McCain ought to visit U.S. troops in Afghanistan, Green Berets training counter-terror cops in West Africa, destroyer sailors in the Strait of Hormuz, Marines on an assault ship in the Mediterranean, a carrier off South Korea.

And he should smile -- energetically -- as the cameras roll.

Neoconservatives and History
Recognizing the hundreds of billions in cost, maybe a trillion, and thousands of soldiers’ lives lost, an economics question arises. Which is less costly (in dollars, lives, international diplomatic relationships and alliances, etc.) and most efficient; invasion and an arduous nation-building occupation or improved domestic homeland security with increased international police action to dissuade “terrorists”? Answer that question five years into Bush’s Iraq War.

Neoconservatives, supporters of the Bush Administration or those who whole-heartedly believe in the goodness of the Iraq War simply must watch the Frontline report Bush’s War and answer to history. Of course, those same people are likely to pre-emptively label the report left-wing propaganda without watching the show and that is unfortunate.

Practically every plan, idea, assumption and strategy advanced by Cheney, Rumsfeld and the neoconservatives was incorrect. The level of incompetence uncovered by "Frontline" is stunning. The program interviews dozens of persons directly involved in the war and subsequent attempt at nation-building (e.g. – Bremer, Garner, etc.) who shed light on the folly of the process. History and many Americans ask what possibly compelled policy makers to believe that the outcome of that war and nation-building would be an easy success considering the realities of tribal and sectarian hatreds? Was there really naïve innocent belief that Iraqi’s would treat Americans like Parisians did in 1944 and they would not loot their own government or use the existing weaponry against American occupiers? The Frontline show is available on the Internet so please watch it and try not listen to Dittoheads. Actually I want John McCain to watch the Frontline program and immediately offer his policy beliefs within an investigative journalist interview as to if America can militarily impose it’s will successfully on Middle Eastern nations.

I find it amusing
That to neolibs, when conservatives don't tell the truth, they "lie." But when liberals don't tell the truth, they "misspeak."

Their hypocrisy is just huge.

Hillary's "Cambodian Moment"
"Hillary Clinton is having her "Cambodian" moment -- her claim that she ducked sniper fire when she landed in Bosnia in 1996." Absolutely to the point. Even Spitzer was a bit too full of himself, thank goodness he finally got his.

Jeff
If The United States really wanted to they could impose their will militarily on every country in the middle east in about a week. Fortunately The United States is not that brutal, they are nice guys when it comes to waging war in this day and age.

Bob C
I agree with you...funny how thye are doing the same with Obama...Yes- Those videos are really convincing on the sniper fire. That "sometimer's disease" really must be getting Hil Like it got John F-ing Carry.
That is an out and out lie if I ever saw it.

WHY
Obama blew it. As a presidential candidate, his speech misses the mark and by that measure proves he is a man whose depth is too shallow to be president. He is obviously captured in the socio/political black bigotry of Black Nationalism exemplified by Wright that seeks crutches and excuses while condemning America.

I wonder why is it that the best the Democrats can do is put up Obama and Clinton as the Democrats standard barrier? That action places the country at risk considering the possibility that either could be elected.

Sniper fire vs. Expertise
As someone who has ducked sniper fire, I fail to see why that would grant Hillary "hard-core foreign policy expertise". If that was true there were be a lot of people in the U.S. with better qualifications. (Come to think of it, there ARE a lot of people with better qualifications.)

Butt
So Al-Qaeda is "a concotion of US propaganda."

Then pray tell, just who is killing US and allied military in Iraq?

On second thought, never mind. Just go back to watching reruns of "Get Smart." Per haps some day you may actually get smart, though I sincerely doubt it.

Hillary keeps bringing up Wright
She seems to think that Wright who has been a pastor for more than 30 years, and made every sermon he preached available to anyone that requests it, as being someone that Obama should have parted ways with.

The question I have is, Why haven't we heard details of the secret 'prayer' meetings, 'gender specific'? that Hillary Clinton goes to along with some Republicans and Democrats. Is it possible that McCain, Hillary's buddy is part of that secret group as well?

What is this group? Some brain washing thing or is it Scientology? There was some statements about changing some kind of spiritual power. I would like to have full disclosure on Hillary's habits in this area since everyone is making it their business to probe into Obamas so closely. To all appearances at least Obama is open about his religious activities. Why would Hillary keep her activities secret?

Dustyo
Maybe you ought to add another layer to that aluminum helmet of yours.

45caliber
Hillary's only qualification to be POTUS is that she was married to Willie The Wagger.

Dustyo
Neither Hillary nor Bill have ever believed in any religion. In fact they had a summer school program in Arkansas for awhile when he was governor that declared that all religion was a myth (among other things). So I'm fairly certain that if Hillary attends a 'prayer' meeting it is either not a prayer meeting or it is done only for publicity.

Bob_C
Either Hillary was co-President or she wasn't. If she was, then she isn't qualified for President (again) since the Constitution says only two terms. If she wasn't, then she has no experience and still isn't qualified. It is too bad more people can't see that. I think too many of them are willing to vote for her in the expectation that once she is in, Bill will be calling the shots. (Which is another horror in itself.)

War Stories and Cameras
Why should we be surprised that Hillary and Obama fabricate things? They are part of the far left that delete facts from American history books and deny this nation's Judeo-Christian roots.

I suppose the Clintons are the biggest liars of all. Their world is such a utopian dream that they probably don't know when they're telling the truth or lying.

I cringe if any one of these two with their dubious patriatism get elected to office.

The all-purpose enemy
You need to get in your spaceship and target the sun.
Jeff Akins
You neolibs are all alike, using some leftist blog like Frontline. Just enough facts thrown in to appear legitimate. But when you use people that have been severely discredited like Dan Rather and the looney tunes that wrote the article..... You and Boutte ought to get in the same spaceship and make a beeline for the sun.

Consequences
As the Democrat Party's pestilential candidates for their party's nomination proceed to get nastier and nastier with every day that goes by, and especially as the attitudes of many of the people who support Obama, e.g. Jeremiah Wright, become more well-known, I get more uneasy.
I am now wondering about the consequences of Mrs. Clinton getting the nomination in stead of Mr. Obama would be. Or, should he get the nomination as the Democrat candidate, and lose to Mr. McCain what would occur, especially in many major cities.

Fairy Tales And War Stories
Back in the Corps it was an article of faith that the difference between fairy tales and war stories was how they began. Fairy tales begin with, "A long time ago in a land far, far away..." War stories begin with, "Back in *** (name the theater), this really happened to me..." We've just been listening to one of Hillary's war stories. Any day now I expect to hear how she was stuck up the Mekong River without a paddle, fighting the Cambonese...

45caliber
It is a matter of record I have even seen it eluded to here on one of the blogs. It is called a secret prayer meeting, and they add it is gender specifice (why that has to be said that way I don't know) and it was said it some kind of Spiritual transfer thing. They even mentioned some Republicans that are part of it and I can't remember the names. I would just like to know. She mentions her church faith and her church what is that all about if she thinks it is a myth.

Who is it that protects the Clintons
Almost every day we see played out before our eyes, things the Clintons have done that is shady or dishonest or down right evil, and it seems people can't see it, Why is that? And there are documented fact after fact showing how they cheated and took money from China and other countries for services rendered,(like selling out our country) and no one cares?

Who protects them? How come they can get away with things? I have and seen others who do not even commit a crime even to the smallest degree of what the Clintons do, get the book thrown at them and they serve jail time, why is that?

Bob_C
When a Republican says something with which all the major Democrats agree and say the same thing "Saddam is seeking WMDs" and proof is not forthcoming it is a "LIE."

The standard Democrats have used to accuse George W Bush of lying is the standard we to which we should now hold Democrats.
