Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

A few months ago, my school deemed April 2009 “Ohio Earth Month” (because, obviously, Earth Day just isn’t enough). Ever since, I’ve been waiting for the sociology department to speak up about how Western environmentalists oppress Third World people in the interest of Saving The Planet.

It’s not an unreasonable expectation. Plenty of my professors believe that all academic subjects should be taught through the prism of racial and economic injustice, with Americans and Europeans as villains and Third World inhabitants as victims. Last year, when a columnist for our student newspaper wrote a satirical column comparing illegal immigrants to party crashers, the paper was flooded with gasbag letters whining about “colonial oppression.” Therefore, it seems Earth Month is the perfect time to confront the West’s burgeoning eco-imperialism.

Take, for example, the use of the chemical DDT. Environmentalists in the West congratulate themselves for nearly ridding the Earth of DDT, but the people of South America, Asia and Africa are not celebrating. They need DDT to ward off malaria, a mosquito-borne infection that thrives in tropical climates and is often lethal.

Thanks to Westerners’ fear of all things inorganic—and Rachel Carson’s scare-mongering book “Silent Spring”—one million inhabitants of third-world countries die of malaria every year. Although studies show that DDT has no harmful effects on humans, environmentalists have pressured Western governments to ban imports from countries that use the chemical for disease control. Under threat of trade sanctions from the West, African nations have been forced to use less effective and more expensive methods to fight the malaria epidemic, such as mosquito-repellent bed nets—even though many Africans don’t own beds.

“I lost my son, two sisters and two nephews to malaria,” Ugandan businesswoman Fiona Kobusingye told reporters in 2007. “Don’t talk to me about birds. And don’t tell me a little DDT in our bodies is worse than the risk of losing more children to this disease. African mothers would be overjoyed if that were their biggest worry.”

Last spring, several Third World nations erupted in riots because the people didn’t have enough to eat—the cost of food staples had soared over 80 percent in three years. Among the chief causes? The West’s decision to divert food resources toward the development of Earth-friendly “biofuels.”

“When millions of people are going hungry, it's a crime against humanity that food should be diverted to biofuels,” Palaniappan Chidambaram, India's finance minister, said during the food riots.

But the complaint barely registered with the Planeteers. Instead of providing food for the poor, they’re more interested in pushing “sustainable farming”—which consigns Third World people to a life of backbreaking labor without the benefit of modern agricultural technology.

“Warming alarmists use ‘climate change’ to justify inhumane policies and shift the blame for problems that could be solved with the very technologies they oppose,” says Paul Driessen, a senior policy advisor for the Congress of Racial Equality. “Eco-colonialism keeps Africans ‘traditional’ and ‘indigenous,’ by insisting that modern technologies are harmful and not ‘sustainable’ in Africa.”

Under pressure from the West to fight “climate change,” the government of Chad banned the use of charcoal, the primary source of power for 99 percent of Chadians. The ban sent rural women and children scrambling to collect cow dung, sticks—anything they could burn in order to cook and boil water for bathing. Others took to the streets in protest of the new Save-the-Earth policy.

“We will not give up,” one woman said. “Better to die swiftly than continue dying slowly.”

I hope the people behind Ohio Earth Month are listening. But for Western colonialists, some causes have always been worth letting Third World people suffer for. And, sadly, it seems fighting “climate change” is one of them.

Psycotic human haters
It is somewhat depressing that we continue to allow Statist Enviromental gorillas to murder innocent men, women, and children in the name of NOTHING! DDT has been studied far and wide producing zero evidence of harm to humans or animals. The groups that have strong-armed the government officials, and the pansy officials who bent over and banned this life saver should all be waterboarded until they admit anthropomorphic global warming is a hoax!

Thank you
Excellent article, Ms. Herzog!

I'm always mystified how quick environmentalists are to accept that we exist to serve the planet than vice-versa. They can get all emotional over the welfare of what amounts to a big stick in the ground, but couldn't give a damn about their fellow man. Thank you for bringing their inhumanity to light.

Umm,
"Under pressure from the West to fight “climate change,” the government of Chad banned the use of charcoal, the primary source of power for 99 percent of Chadians."

That wasn't done under Western pressure to combat global climate change; it was done independently to combat regional climate change, namely desertification.

Ashely you are writing truth
Jillian - its most frightening aspect
To be sure, the cost of the bill is (NOT) its most frightening aspect; however, there are a few other tricks in the bill that deserve some attention.

Wacko environmentalist suing their neighbors - anyyone - and wacko judges taking everything one owns in judgments...that's the cost of this insanity.

In 1976, delegation of the U.S. government signed the U.N. document 1976 Report of Habitat I: United Nations Conference on Human Settlements which states: "Private land ownership is a principal instrument of accumulation and concentration of wealth and therefore contributes to social injustice. ... Public control of land use is therefore indispensable. ..." This 1976 Report is 65 pages of specifics on how governments (federal, state, and local) can end private land ownership and secure absolute control of land use.

Land use policies by Congress and government agencies since that time have been designed to weaken private property rights and strengthen government control over all land uses. The Endangered Species Act is essentially to prevent land development on private property. The Clean Water Act is another ruse to prevent use of private land anywhere near a puddle of water. "Comprehensive planning" section of the 1976 document details strategies to empower government in restricting landowners’use of their own land.

And now, global warming is the excuse to exponentially expand government's power to control not only land use, but every aspect of our lives.

Ashley saying truth
I inadverdantly hit submit while trying to edit an earlier comment on Jillian Bandes article on the Insame energy bill.

We must educate ourselves about the real agenda behind all the horrors that have been and are being perpetrated against human beings in the name of environmentalism.

The world's agenda springs from such documents as I talked about in the other post, but the powerhouse is the UN protocol - -Agenda 21 - coming out of the Earth Summit in Rio in 1992 which the USA endorsed and promised to "lead the way" in carrying out the mandates. Look up Agenda 21.

In 1993 Clinton by Exec. Order established the President's Council on Sustainable Development. Al Gore took the ball and ran with it, writing the 'bible' on environmentalism, Earth In The Balance. And gov't has used "global warming" as a screen to hide behind as they follow the UN's and the plutocrats agenda of thinning the population of the world - drastically.

Funny thing
Eco nazis want to use wind and solar power, but just about every place these things have been proposed, the environmentalist throw up a roadblock.

Go figure!!

Overpopulation of course
Think about things our government supports that is intended to reduce population. Planned Parenthood and abortion worldwide – and no ban on partial-birth abortion. Homosexual unions and homosexual marriage. Morning after pill available to 17 year olds without a prescription. The environmental policies Ashley spoke of are the most atrocious. DDT was never the threat to any wildlife as they claimed. The bio-fuel craze was in the beginning exposed as inefficient and anti-human in that it limited food supplies.

The sustainable agenda for the USA declares that these things are UNSUSTAINABLE: private property, fossil fuels, paved roads, pastures, farmlands, irrigation, commercial farming, herbicides, pesticides, grazing livestock, golf courses, ski slopes, consumerism, single family homes, personal transportation, and traditional families. Does that mean one child per family? That’ll go a long way toward reducing the population.

President Obama’s government machine is moving very quickly to tie up a lot of loose ends and finish the net which ensnares every citizen in this country – except for our ruling elitists, of course.

The real face of the DDT ban
I'm a U.S. citizen living in the Philippines, married to a Filipina. Two of our young relatives (girls, 6 and 4) recently were infected with Dengue Fever from a mosquito bite that could easily have been prevented by use of "evil" DDT. We found out about it 3 days after they got sick. We managed to save the 4 year old (about $400 in transfusions, which the parents could not afford), but the 6 year old died a horrible death, hemoraging from all orifaces, swelling up to twice her size, you name it. Every GD eco alarmist should be forced to watch a child die this kind of horror-movie death and decide whether it is really so important that some obscure bird's eggshells are full thickness. I say let's feed those birds to the third world poor. Along with the eco-terrorists who banned DDT!Clearly this people have adopted a culture of death.

Lawrence - Clearly you are right
"Clearly this people have adopted a culture of death."

Humans in the way of "rewilding" earth
One of the people who has been driving the radical environmental fever is John Davis.
Davis was first associated with Earth First, then Wild Earth. He was editor of Wild Earth when they published The Wildlands Project, the fully accepted vision of the outcome of the USA’s obligation to fulfill the mandates of Agenda 21 and the UN’s protocols for the planet.

It is a plan to “rewild” the USA. In the chapter Davis wrote, he summarized by saying: “[d]oes all the foregoing mean that Wild Earth and The Wildlands Project advocate the end of industrial civilization? Most assuredly.”

In later writings he says, “Virtually every major problem in the world today is caused or exacerbated by human overpopulation.”

“The problem is also that too many people are driving; too many people are heating their homes with fossil fuels; and too many people are consuming natural resources and supplanting natural, carbon-storing habitats with crops, cows, lawns, and houses. “

“People would rather have fewer children than stop driving their cars and running their air conditioners. So, while we must also confront the problems of excessive consumption and harmful technologies, we will likely make the greatest strides toward saving the world from disaster by instituting financial and cultural incentives for lower birth rates.”

To his credit, he left EarthFirst when it became a leftist terrorist group, and he gives at least lip service to the “peaceful” implementation of all the radical changes that he and the UN and the world elitists intend to make to “rewild” the earth.

Liberal "Logic"

Last night, I watched a remake of the 1951 sci-fi classic, "The Day The Earth Stood Still."

The premise of the original 1951 movie was that a spaceguy, played by Michael Rennie, comes to earth to warn mankind that if we don't change our violent ways, the community of spaceguys is going to kill every human on earth lest we spread our aggression into the spaceguys' community of worlds. Untolerable.

The premise of the remake is that a spaceguy comes to earth to, get this, save the planet from mankind. He (Keanu Reeves as the scary Klaatu (smirk)) decides that it is best for the planet earth if he sterilizes the planet by killing everything on the surface with a lethal bug infestaton, thus "saving" the earth."

Now even childlike common sense will tell you that the planet earth has been here for a few billion years in various states of inhabitability by various life forms. It has been pummeled by planetoids, asteroids, comets, meteorites, lethal radiation, and has undergone polar magnetic shifts countless times. The climate has changed drastically and constantly over the millenia and species have come and gone because of it. The earth remains.

Now though, Hollywood, the liberal "intelligencia," Klaatu and the Obama administration will have us all believe that in a mere ten thousand years or so, a few billion parasites called humans are going to "destroy the earth," something the universe has been unable to do in the last few billion years.

While none too bright, liberals certainly are egotistical.

DDT
DDT supposedly caused a thinning of the egg shells of bald eagles. Irrespective of the accuracy of that, insecticides other than DDT can be used on mosquitos. I suppose that if malathion were sprayed there would be lawyers and environmentalists bringing law suites for their own nefarious purposes.

No DDT less Abortions
The left is preoccupied with death and population control.

But the left will create a protected welfare collective of food stamp chum chum eaters that will vote for them at home.

Roman/Greco world
If you read Inside the Third Reich by Albert Speers the environmental movement was run amuck on the collage campus in Germany.

The use of Paganism was essential to form group think and the environmental movement allowed for the taking of private property and the sacrificing of lives and the complete control of the women and children.

The state them turned the men into a warrior cult and set out to deprive Europe of life, liberty and property.

You can' t save everything.
I believe the Bible speaks of Adam being assigned the tending of the garden in Eden, but he did not prevent Eve from eating the forbidden fruit and of course we all are recipients of disobedience there. Why am I saying all of this? We are responsible to somewhat take care of the environment and we should but this group of wackos as Rush Limbaugh calls them, go to the extremes and try to save everything. When God gets ready for the extinction of certain things it's time for it to go. It has served it's purpose.
Thank goodness these idiots were not around to save the dinasours. From what I've seen of what they were, I cannot picture myself having to fight one.
One of the best things that could happen to this country, would be the abolition of the government agency known as the Department of Environmentalism. Let the States take care of their own environment without all these non-sensical Federal Government regulations. We could save a lot of money not having to subsidize them and they could get a real job and help pay taxes like we do.

PLEASE!! Read that Book!!
If U haven't read 'Silent Spring' U should do so. This is truly the CLASSIC of good intentions gone awry..At one time I reread the book, or at least portions of it, just to remind myself. Not anymore--I'm convinced that not only Ms Carson, but most of the world, is DAFT!! CHEERS

Not just 3rd World countries
Alaska has suffered more than most states at the cruel and unthinking hands of the environmental lobby. In the 1970s, Alaska was riding a boom of wealth from pipeline construction and we prepared to build the infrastructure needed to (finally) move us into the modern American era. I was in high school. I remember the adults (and my parents allowed children to participate in the dialogues!) talking about how they wanted to modernize and build industry, etc., but they wanted to do it in an Alaskan way. Most of them didn't move here because they wanted to live in LA or NYC. They had a mind toward conservation and environmental sensitivity not because they thought it was a good abstract idea, but because we live here and we don't want to live in the smog belt, so they weren't interested in importing it.

Then Carter got the bright idea to lock up 90% of the land in Alaska. Actually, when you figure it all out, less than 1/2 of 1% of all the land in Alaska can ever be in private hands. That was Carter's doing, in the name of environmental protection.

Alaska has been dependent on the federal government ever since and there's not a whole lot we can do about it because we don't own our land and we aren't allowed to build very much productive on the land we do own. Even private land is subject to the EPA and they've stopped every attempt at establishing a manufacturing base here. I even know a furniture company that they drove out of business because they didn't want them to use glue.

EnvironMENTALists . . .
mst be exposed for the charlatans and criminals that they are. It seems that the "First Amendment prohibiting government endorsement of religion could be used to take down these b*st*rds. Let's face it, earth worship (GAIA) IS a "religion".
It should be possible to audit these "environmental organizations and find them in violation of RICO statutes. Look at the case of the "government biologists" who planted "lynx fur" in a northwest US forest in order to stop logging operations. They were caught. NOTHING was done to them. One can only imagine how many other hoaxes (such as global warming--oops I mean climate change) are being perpetrated.
If these so-called "environmental organizations" were so concerned with the earth, they themselves would buy up land to preserve it rather than use communist inspired "laws" to take it from private individuals.
For once, I would like to see a whaling ship go after a "greenpeace" vessel and blow it out of the water (with commensurate loss of "greenpeace" life).

Aurowatcher – Social engineering
has been around for a long while, but is really thriving now in this age of “sustainable development.” Can’t let a good crisis go to waste, even if they have to manufacture one. All of America is going to be as stifled and strangled as Alaska if this energy bill goes into effect.

The goal of the global elitists is, of course, one world government (OWG). This current “crisis intervention” to prevent what they claim is “global warming” goes a long way toward depriving citizens in what has been the free-est nation on earth their freedom. Freedom is vested in ownership of private property, and the ability to make private decisions about what one will do with his own property. That stands in the way of OWG.

Since the OWG religion is earth worship, the population must be drastically reduced to protect “mother earth,” and to cull out those who will not be re-educated to accept this religion.

Let’s face it. When a government agency uses the term “rightwing conservatives” they mean Christians. When they use the tern “rightwing extremists” they still mean Christians. This is clearly an attempt to demonize a particular religion – the one least likely to accept “earth worship.”

BTW the threads dealing with environmental questions are so quiet. There should be hundreds of comments. And where are the usual dissenters? Where are some we thought to be real thinkers and who should be tackling this problem?

Not many people want to think about/deal with the really heavy, important issues. If it is something that partisan people can use as entertainment fussing and cussing each other, the threads are busy.

People, when this thing goes down, WE DO NOT GET A SECOND CHANCE.
