Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

WASHINGTON, March 31 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Pope Benedict XVI will lead an ecumenical prayer service April 18, at St. Joseph's Church in the Yorkville area of Manhattan.

Participants at the service will include 250 national and local Protestant and Orthodox Church leaders.

St. Joseph's Church was built in the 19th century by the immigrant German community that settled in the area and today serves a diverse population. A Sunday Mass is still celebrated in German.

The pope will address the group after a reading from Paul's letter to the Ephesians (4:1-6) and before the congregation prays the Lord's Prayer.

At the end of the ceremony, the pope will greet ten national and five local ecumenical leaders.

The national leaders include:

Archbishop Demetrios of America, Primate of the Greek Orthodox Church in America and Exarch of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. In June 2003, the Archbishop led the delegation from the Ecumenical Patriarchate to the Vatican for the feast of Sts. Peter and Paul. He serves as Chairman of the Standing Conference of Canonical Orthodox Bishops in the Americas.

Archbishop Khajag Barsamian, Primate of the Diocese of the Armenian Church of America. Archbishop Barsamian is a member of the international dialogue between the Catholic Church and the Oriental Orthodox Churches, and is Chairman of the Standing Conference of Oriental Orthodox Churches in the United States.

Archbishop Vicken Aykazian, legate of the Diocese of the Armenian Church of America (Eastern) in Washington and ecumenical officer. He became President of the National Council of Churches USA January 1, 2008.

Rev. Dr. Donald McCoid, representing Presiding Bishop Mark Hanson of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, is Director of the Ecumenical and Inter-Religious Relations Office of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

Bishop Jeremiah J. Park, Bishop of the New York Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church.

Rev. Dr. Wesley Granberg-Michaelson, General Secretary of the Reformed Church in America since 1994, and one of the five Presidents of Christian Churches Together in the USA, representing the historic Protestant family.

Rev. Dr. Clifton Kirkpatrick, Stated Clerk of the Presbyterian Church (USA) since 1996.

Rev. Dr. William J. Shaw, President of the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc., since 1999. Dr. Shaw serves as one of the five Presidents of Christian Churches Together in the USA, representing the Racial/Ethnic family of churches.

Bishop James Leggett, General Superintendent of the International Pentecostal Holiness Church, a position he had held since 1997. Bishop Leggett is the Evangelical/Pentecostal President of Christian Churches Together in the USA.

Dr. Leith Anderson, President of the National Association of Evangelicals (NAE) and senior pastor of Wooddale Church in Eden Prairie, Minnesota since 1977.

Leaders from the New York area who will personally greet the pope include:

Bishop David H. Benke, president of the Atlantic District of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. Rev. Benke was elected president of the Atlantic District in 1991, and has been re-elected five times, most recently in 2006. He is also the primary ecumenical leader for the Nehemiah Project which provides housing for the poor in New York City.

Rev. Dr. A. R. Bernard Sr., President of the Council of Churches of the City of New York and founder and Senior Pastor of The Christian Cultural Center in Brooklyn, New York. He is also host of two weekly television programs, Faith in Practice with A. R. Bernard and The A. R. Bernard Show.

Elder Bernice A. King, the second daughter and youngest child of civil rights leaders Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King. With her brother Martin Luther King III, she has been active in the Southern Christian Leadership Conference once led by their father. She is currently an elder at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in Lithonia, Georgia.

Rev. Jimmy Seong G. Lim, Executive Director of the Council of Churches of the City of New York. Rev. Lim has served the Council of Churches of the City of New York since 1999. Rev. Lim is an ordained minister in The Reformed Church in America.

The Right Rev. Mark S. Sisk, the 15th Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of New York. Bishop Sisk was consecrated Bishop Coadjutor of the Diocese of New York in 1998. Prior to his election as coadjutor, Bishop Sisk served as President and Dean of Seabury-Western Theological Seminary in Evanston, Illinois.

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has been in ecumenical dialogue with a broad spectrum of Christian churches and communities for decades and has embarked with them on many ventures. One of the most recent is establishment of the Christian Churches Together in the USA. Members include Catholics, Orthodox, mainline Protestants, Evangelicals and Pentecostals. For the first time in U.S. history there is a structure to enable the great majority of Christians in the United States to speak together with a common voice on the issues that face both church and society.

I have to agree with Buck
On this one. If you're afraid to go to Manhattan Island, then don't go.
but don't insult the Pope, for at least trying to reach out to those who might actually want to hear what he has to say.

This reminds me

This reminds me I'm not done yet. The possibility of disappointment is far too great...greater than the possible embarrassment in trying again.

It is for those we love and our country that encompasses our treasure that we continue to try.

Yesterday afternoon

My neighbor who saw me lose an election when my Citizen Assocation voted to hold their election during Easter, stepped up to chat as I returned home from some Red Cross Shelter and Mass Care training.

She had early commented on my need for control after I blurted to my oppenent that he had perpetrated a fraud on his website. And in the end, when I asked the 70 or so people in the room if ten people would sign the amendment to move the vote out of conflict with parents of public and private school parents NOT ONE would step forward to defend the minority and I beleive I again blurted something to the effect that this was NOT the purpose of the Citizen's Assn and it was not how neighbors should treat neighbors.

I talked with her about the amendment to the Constitution to move elections to May to avoid cyclical conflict with public and private school parents.

Then she said she would sign it. All I could think of yesterday is that is one down with eight to go. How many courageous people live in my neighborhood? I'd also need a large population of neighbors to show up for the vote that the petition would force as it is by MEMBERS not the Board alone.

Last night, today and all my tomorrows are about prayer in motion.

Pope who speaks the truth
I hope the Pope reiterates his condemnation of pre-emptive wars. The neocons a ginning up for another one. This is the best Pope ever.

you have a point but if you keep your hat on noone will notice

With thanks to Ann Landers

Pope to Lead Ecumenical Prayer Service a
Now, I wonder just what the Pope may say. Wouldn't it be fascinating if he would simply say, "The problems of this world would improve greatly if we all dropped this "church stuff" and accepted a relationship with Jesus Christ?

I can just see "the left" seathing in anger at the sound of that name, Jesus Christ. But it would clarify the real battle that we face in our time.

It is evident

It is evident that many of the posters on this blog have never been through interfaith dialogue and may not have a very clear notion of what Pope Benedict really represents.

I look forward to listening carefully to what he has to say.

Lisa
Nice post. Thaqnks. I am a Catholic and I am proud of my (German) sheperd and I remember when he was chosed three years ago I was visiting my cousin who hasn't been near a church in 40 years and he said "we have a new Pope." One of my favorite stories.

Most of the posters here are just taking cheap shots from the anonymity of cyberspace and really have no idea of what they are talking about.

Viva Il Papa!

Apologize!
As a life-long Catholic I am still ashamed that my church has not offically apologized for the protection and defense of the pedophiles among our Priests.

Apologize to all of those children whose lives have been destroyed by offical church policy!

Eileen Ireland
So take it up within your church and keep going up the line of responsibility, if you are a Catholic. Get other Catholics involved with whatever you think would satisfy you. I am not a Catholic. Don't tell me about it. I think it was horrible. I think the criminal prosecutions were justified.

What do you think about the polygamist groups, such as the one where the women and children were removed from yesterday? You think that doesn't hurt children? Polygamy is illegal yet there are many polygamist "families". Does that disturb you at all?

As an Ex-Catholic
I wonder who the Pope will be praying to...

Uncle Max

I handed in a petition today that will force my association to notify membership and hold in ten days a vote for a constituional amendment to move elections to May 08 to move it out of periodic conflict with both public and private schools.

80% of the people I asked signed the petition. I learned a lot about the 20% that refused.

It was a good day. I did it after the rain stopped - in my mind, God's way of ensuring I made it to Mass and had time with the family.

Have a nice night.

One thing is for sure...

The MSM will roll out the Red Carpet for the Pope. We will hear nothing but praise of the Catholic Church. We will hear all the nice comments Obama and Hillary have for the Holy Father.

The MSM certainly aren't going to focus on the Liberal hate-machine protesting outside.

It's Election time after all. Democrats will be sure not to upset the Catholic voters. These Atheists will be on their best "I don't mind Christians" behavior.

Lisa
I appreciate your post but I don't really know what you are talking about. What do you mean by moving elections to May 08, and what is the periodic conflict with public and private schools?

UM

Ex...
I had to leave the Catholic Church about 10 years ago. It broke my heart, but the idea that a significant part of the money I put into the collection plate was going to buy lawyers to defend pedophiles was just too much.

I'm a fairly happy Luthern now.

Taft
I've never read a thing from you on any of these threads that was worth the time it took to read it. And this post from you was no exception.........completely off subject and irrelevant.

The problem with you rabid anti-Bush haters is that you just can't stop taking every opportunity to bash the President, even when there are totally different subjects being raised and discussed.

Tell me, Taft......since this is, in your words, "the best Pope ever"........I'm sure you agree with him that abortion and homosexuality are terrible evils that are completely outside the will of God?

Cue the crickets......

S.A.M.
He'll be praying to the God of Scripture, the
Creator of all things.

Meanwhile, you'll be praying to the one you see in the mirror every morning........

Uncle Max
See my earier comments. My Citizen's Association have March elections. Periodically that conflicts with Spring break and or is voted to Easter. We ave elections this year during Easter week hence many parents were out of town on vacation.

This is their way of removing "these" people from the Board periodically.

There is anti-Christian sentiment as shown clearly on this blog. Just as I experience the hatefulness from the Board. I have never seen people so determined to not allow clean elections.

The way I figure it - they don't like light like cockroaches.

Heretics and other bad players

One of the main topics I think should be discussed at this interfaith dialogue is the dialogue of hate and what that does to the "faithful" no matter Catholic, Baptist, Born again, Lutheran, Jew, Muslim, Buddist etc. When a "Pastor" or "Iman" is spewing hate from a pulpit or a mosque, what impact does that have on the perception of faith in the public square?

PAPAL BASEBALL
I think His Holiness should attend a Baseball Game between Notre Dame and Boston College then visit both dugouts cheering on the players.

Pope to Lead Ecumenical Prayer Service a
Let's get serious now. How can the Pope who has publicly said that salvation is available only in the Catholic church do anything that is ecumenical? How can a person that leads one of the most religion filled hierarchies in the world do anything ecuminical?

I personally would like to see this oppressive empire fall. Then people would be forced, out of their own desperation, to seek God for themselves. It's the easiest way to find him I've every seen.

MrRoy
It doesn't appear you believe actions or words so just to remind you what ecumenical means. These men and women of faith are doing this - not just one man though he be my Pope.

1: worldwide or general in extent, influence, or application2 a: of, relating to, or representing the whole of a body of churches b: promoting or tending toward worldwide Christian unity or cooperation

I agree with roy
"How can the Pope who has publicly said that salvation is available only in the Catholic church do anything that is ecumenical?"

It's all just for political show. He has stated that I, a Protestant, am anathema.

So wouldn't praying with a protestant be like praying with a muslim? We're all saying the words, but praying to different gods. That is not unity. Nor ecumenical.

Go to an ecumentical prayer service

McRoy and Verbivore - you should both go to one. Perhaps you'll gain greater insigt by participating. Unless, of course, you don't believe in God, prayer or community.

annfan
As an ex-Catholic who has friends who fall asleep at night still holding rosaries, and all too familiar with the beliefs and statements of this Pope, I've no doubt he will be praying to a goddess, not God.

I pray the God of Scripture - not to any human being, cannonized or not.

S,A.M.

Your lack of knowledge about the Roman Catholic church is evident.

Lisa
Are you going to deny Catholics praying to Mary? Scripture teaches we are to pray to God through Christ.
It's odd that Mary said "do what He tells you" and Jesus said "come to Me", but Catholicism teaches you must go to Mary in direct disobedience to both of them.
