How to Keep Reagan Out of Office

Poll
Will the Democrats have the time to read their own health care bill before voting on it?

Inasmuch as the current presidential election has come down to a choice among hemlock, self-immolation or the traditional gun in the mouth, now is the time for patriotic Americans to review what went wrong and to start planning for 2012.

How did we end up with the mainstream media picking the Republican candidate for president?

It isn't the early primaries, it isn't that we allow Democrats to vote in many of our primaries, and it isn't that the voters are stupid. All of that was true or partially true in 1980 -- and we still got Ronald Reagan.

We didn't get Ronald Reagan this year not just because there's never going to be another Reagan. We will never again get another Reagan because Reagan wouldn't run for office under the current campaign-finance regime.

Three months ago, I was sitting with a half-dozen smart, successful conservatives whose names you know, all griping about this year's cast of presidential candidates. I asked them, one by one: Why don't you run for office?

Of course, none of them would. They are happy, well-adjusted individuals.

Reagan, too, had a happy life and, having had no trouble getting girls in high school, had no burning desire for power. So when the great California businessman Holmes Tuttle and two other principled conservatives approached Reagan about running for office, Reagan said no.

But Tuttle kept after Reagan, asking him not to reject the idea out of hand. He formed "Friends of Reagan" to raise money in case Reagan changed his mind.

He asked Reagan to give his famous "Rendezvous With History" speech at a $1,000-a-plate Republican fundraiser in Los Angeles and then bought airtime for the speech to be broadcast on TV days before the 1964 presidential election.

The epochal broadcast didn't change the election results, but it changed history. That single broadcast brought in nearly $1 million to the Republican Party -- not to mention millions of votes for Goldwater.

After the astonishing response to Reagan's speech and Tuttle's continued entreaties, Reagan finally relented and ran for governor. In 1966, with the help, financial and otherwise, of a handful of self-made conservative businessmen, Reagan walloped incumbent Edmund G. (Pat) Brown, winning 57 percent of the vote in a state with two Democrats for every Republican.

The rest is history -- among the brightest spots in all of world history.

None of that could happen today. (The following analysis uses federal campaign-finance laws rather than California campaign-finance laws because the laws are basically the same, and I am not going to hire a campaign-finance lawyer in order to write this column.)

If Tuttle found Ronald Reagan today, he couldn't form "Friends of Reagan" to raise money for a possible run -- at least not without hiring a battery of campaign-finance lawyers and guaranteeing himself a lawsuit by government bureaucrats. He'd also have to abandon his friendship with Reagan to avoid the perception of "coordination."

Tuttle couldn't hold a $1,000-a-plate fundraiser for Reagan -- at least in today's dollars. That would be a $6,496.94-a-plate dinner (using the consumer price index) or a $19,883.51-a-plate dinner (using the relative share of GDP). The limit on individual contributions to a candidate is $2,300.

Reagan's "Rendezvous With History" speech would never have been broadcast on TV -- unless Tuttle owned the TV station. Independent groups are prohibited from broadcasting electioneering ads 60 days before an election.

A handful of conservative businessmen would not be allowed to make large contributions to Reagan's campaign -- they would be restricted to donating only $2,300 per person.

Under today's laws, Tuttle would have had to go to Reagan and say: "We would like you to run for governor. You are limited to raising money $300 at a time (roughly the current limits in 1965 dollars), so you will have to do nothing but hold fundraisers every day of your life for the next five years in order to run in the 1970 gubernatorial election, since there clearly there isn't enough time to raise money for the 1966 election."

Also, Tuttle would have to tell Reagan: "We are not allowed to coordinate with you, so you're on your own. But wait -- it gets worse! After five years of attending rubber chicken dinners every single day in order to raise money in tiny increments, you will probably lose the election anyway because campaign-finance laws make it virtually impossible to unseat an incumbent.

"Oh, and one more thing: Did you ever kiss a girl in high school? Not even once? If not, then this plan might appeal to you!"

Obviously, Reagan would have returned to his original answer: No thanks.

Reagan loved giving speeches and taking questions from voters. The one part of campaigning Reagan loathed was raising money. Thanks to our campaign-finance laws, fundraising is the single most important job of a political candidate today.

This is why you will cast your eyes about the nation in vain for another Reagan sitting in any governor's mansion or U.S. Senate seat. Pro-lifers like to ask, "How many Einsteins have we lost to abortion?" I ask: How many Reagans have we lost to campaign-finance reform?

The campaign-finance laws basically restrict choice political jobs, like senator and governor -- and thus president -- to:

(1) Men who were fatties in high school and consequently are willing to submit to the hell of running for office to compensate for their unhappy adolescences -- like Bill Clinton, Rudy Giuliani, Mike Huckabee and Newt Gingrich. (Somewhere in this great land of ours, even as we speak, the next Bill Clinton is waddling back to the cafeteria service line asking for seconds.)

(2) Billionaires and near-billionaires -- like Jon Corzine, Steve Forbes, Michael Bloomberg and Mitt Romney -- who can fund their own campaigns (these aren't necessarily sociopaths, but it certainly limits the pool of candidates).

(3) Celebrities and name-brand candidates -- like Arnold Schwarzenegger, George Bush, Giuliani and Hillary Clinton (which explains the nation's apparent adoration for Bushes and Clintons -- they've got name recognition, a valuable commodity amidst totalitarian restrictions on free speech).

(4) Mainstream media-anointed candidates, like John McCain and B. Hussein Obama.

What a bizarre coincidence that a few years after the most draconian campaign-finance laws were imposed via McCain-Feingold, our two front-runners happen to be the media's picks! It's uncanny -- almost as if by design! (Can I stop now, or do you people get sarcasm?)

By prohibiting speech by anyone else, the campaign-finance laws have vastly magnified the power of the media -- which, by the way, are wholly exempt from speech restrictions under campaign-finance laws. The New York Times doesn't have to buy ad time to promote a politician; it just has to call McCain a "maverick" 1 billion times a year.

It is because of campaign-finance laws like McCain-Feingold that big men don't run for office anymore. Little men do. And John McCain is the head homunculus.

You want Reagan back? Restore the right to free speech, and you will have created the conditions that allowed Reagan to run.

Junkyard Dawg
Junks, you just had to bring up sit-ups at a time like this.

They would make a tape of Obama doing sit-ups, but you know how it is with people fainting. You might not even *live* through it!

:D see ya junks

at it again?
Regardless, no one is following you, oh wait, Bill Cunningham. One vote, one person.
BTW....(sort of off subject)
Soooooo many mixed-race voters in this Country today. Someone's white mother got involved with a black man, Someone's white mother got involved with a hispanic man, Someone's white father got involved with an Asian woman, and so on and so on, despite what their families may have told them. In other words America, the true REASON for the ground swell. Rejection and denouncing the racial sterotypes of old America have fallen by the roadside.
The millions of children of mixed race parenting have grown up.

They have lived with the smear attacks and rude awakening that they were different, merely because of the color of their skin.

Yes, Yes, We Can!!

That is what is happening in America today!!
P.S. The same Reagan that gave us our precious immigration law.

Confidence born of Marriage

Jane Fonda and Anne Coulter should make a workout tape with Richard Simmons and Dick Cheney.
I'd pay to see who could do the most sit-ups.

Take the hit and return in 2012
Hold your nose and vote against Hillary and Hussein Stalin.

Half a tyrant is better than a whole one.

Ronald Reagan, et al
So, Ann, as usual you offer some witty (and mostly true and wise) and entertaining comments about politics du jour. But you can't help inserting a harsh criticism of the GOP's 2008 nominee. This approach calls to question the reason you write today. Is your goal to raise Ann or promote the only way we have to keep control of the White House? I'm finding it more difficult to enjoy your essays as you seem to have lost your way in finding a purpose for sharing your thoughts. gene, Longmont, CO

What I find humorous
Is the liberals who keep writing on this blog that "Ann doesn't count", or "Ann is dead", or that "Ann lost". Meanwhile there are over 600 posts on this article and it is almost always that way every week with Ann's articles.

McCain-Feingold is the worst...
Coulter is right that McCain-Feingold is the worst thing McCain has done, and the least conservative thing. I think that he was embarrassed by the Keating Five incident and thought that if it could happen to him, it was happening to everyone.

However the problem is that Coulter apparently thinks Rush Limbaugh doesn't have the ability to get out the anti-McCain message. He did. And true conservatives disagreed with him.

The pundits here on Townhall.com are not among any who were silenced by McCain Feingold.

Coulter is wrong that McCain was elected by the media. Conservatives have heard nothing but McCain-bashing by the lock-step conservative media. Limbaugh, Hannity, Viguerie, Coulter, Sowell, etc, mostly on the issue of immigration, and on which they are dead wrong. McCain-Feingold has suppressed the conservative opposition to the pseudo-right position that the elite cabal has decided to push.

The mainstream conservative media have all been anti McCain, but the rank and file voted for him--and as the Republican party is in disarray, only the true believers were voting in the Republican primaries this year.

The proper Conservative position on immigration is McCain's, not Coulter's ultra-statist "Halt! Where are your papers!" vision. This is a view that has been rejected by rank and file conservatives ever since the failed Buchanan campaign. Coulter is out of step with what it truly means to be a conservative on this one. True conservatives want a laissez-faire economic policy.

The future of the conservative movement will be with the policies that produce the most economic prosperity and the most human liberty--vouchers, free religious expression, respect for life, gun rights, property rights, free trade, flat taxation, decentralized government, contract rights, etc.

Remarkable column
I am shocked at all the paid hit people for McCain. He is a tired old kook and a danger to our nation. This article could not be more on target. What a tragedy to see our constitution hanging by a thread due to a so-called republican John McCain. At this point we need Divine intervention to salvage this nation from the likes of this nightmare we are faced with.

Fat jokes and money
Ann, I think you are beginning to sound a bit strident. What's the matter, feeling marginalized, unwanted, out of synch with the mainstream republican party? Well, you might begin to reconsider fat jokes. Not nice and not necessarily funny or appropriate. Next, money didn't get Romney elected. And, until he flamed Howard Dean did fairly well using the internet to get those little dibs and drabs. And, unless I'm mistaken, McCain was on the ropes financially. Apparently, the ultra conservative intelligentsia has misinterpreted something here. No surprise, since the written, radio and tv media are now the MSM and as contaminated by their own rap as the liberals.

So I'm not a lawyer and she is...
I am not a McCain-Feingold fan. I am with Thomas Jefferson who said that the newspapers should be divided into 3 sections: Possibly true, Inaccurate, and Lies. He also said that for all the evils of bad journalism, it is not worth restricting it. (Can we get those neat labels on newspaper sections though?)

However, it seems to me that the actual language of the bill was only to restrict "sham issue ads" using "soft money." Doesn't that mean that hard money could still be used for these ads?

I also notice that the candidates who got the most individual donors were actually the most successful in this Republican Primary, and may be the least falsely-indebted to benefactors in a long time. (But they're still indebted!)

I think it is a good thing that individuals can give more than twice as much as they could pre-McCain-Fiengold, so if we get into a hellfire hurry to repeal it, leave that part in.

Persephone in SD -- Precisely!:

All too often their responses in no way address the content of the column. Personally, Im tired of the boorishness. This is a Conservative web page, whose creators allow individuals (of every persuasion) the freedom to post their comments. That is, of course, within certain guidelines of civility. People like Allen remind me of un-housebroken ignoramuses: who dont wipe their feet, put their shoe-clad feet on the coffee table and leave their bubble gum under their dinner plate before blowing their noses in the table linen.

Just try doing what they do, in our "House," on one of their sites and see how long it is before your banned-for-life. Their moderators won't even allow an opposing view, let alone the type of grade-school calumny Allen spews each week.

Better off without Reagan
From a free-market perspective Ronald Reagan was a complete disaster. He raised taxes, raised spending, increased regulation, added a Department, assaulted the Constitution, specifically the 10th Amendment through the War on Drugs, and added trillions to the national debt. Before you conservatives blame the liberal Democrats, you should be aware that Reagan on vetoed on big spending program but his alternative was about the same size. On top of this you had BCCI, Inslaw, Selling arms to Iran, arming Saddam, arming the Mujahadeen. Do the Democrats deserve their share of the blame? Absolutely. But they state that they are for socialism (actually fascism) so there is no deception. Reagan said he believed in freedom. The greatest tragedy of the Reagan years is that free-market laissez faire capitalism has gotten a bad name. How often do we hear liberals say we tried the free-market and it failed? The free-market was never tried.

Cutter Bench, Yes, I've
found that to be true, even when Ann C writes a mildly benign column such as this one, they are still compelled to post the carbon copied personal insults week after week-

Persephone in SD:

People like Allen espouse how much content and character matter but then expose their own lack thereof, by attacking non-likeminded individuals who don’t measure up to their (Allen’s) own superficial standards.

With Allen it's the same old Blah-Blah-Blah week after week.

allen, In regards to
your comment "Ann, we know you are getting old...blah blah"
I have to ask, what are you, around 13??
Only to kids that age and younger is 46 considered old and viewed with such seemingly charged derision, you clown!

Allen - Inasmuch:

Inasmuch (seeing) as your only dictionary has cloth pages with pictures; in lieu (instead) of definitions it’s positively amazing that you would assail (attack) Ann for using an English word, namely, “inasmuch.” You really should stick to what you do best: Catty, one-note samba Coulter-bashing, aging Drag Queen, living in Mommy’s basement, with Daddy issues.

Just a thought...

inasmuch
Sorry Allen, but "inasmuch" is in my dictionary.. Is that all you can find in Ann's piece to complain about?

Mcstain-Feingold
It's interesting(and sad)that Bush when siging the bill said it was probably un-constitutional and signed it anyway.(treason)?

This country as it was founded is gone!

The people do NOT want a republic, they have made this abundantly clear.
We libertarians and "real" conservatives are a minority and will continue to be marginalized.

Deal with it!

We are rapidly sliding towards socialism, thats what the people want and that is what they will get.

modmark
thanks for the tips. Gay men are good at giving advice.

Legally, libs aren't murderers of babies. And it isn't the GOP who push for non-stop porn access. So, the GOP may not be pristine but I believe the Left is certainly no friend of the American family.

And I think it is a shame that people treat themselves like dirty mattresses but I don't dwell on it. One step at a time.

Does sex ed work? The out of wedlock thing and all the VD amongst kids seems to say otherwise. Oh, maybe the Left meant that they want more sex among youngsters who are not emotionally equipped to handle it. Well, I guess libs have different definitions of success.

Robert
you wrote:
"The sad thing for Bush is that I am fairly convinced, and grow more so each day...that properly applied "Surge theory" (Or more properly Krulaks theory) would have by the 06 election fairly stablized Iraq and Bush would have left office with the "legend" being better then the facts."

I want your opinion on something that has bothered me about the war in Iraq. The bombing of the Golden Mosque. It seemed an extreme action even for sectarian hatred....like me, a Christian, bombing Notre Dame.

I think Iraq was pretty stable at the time. Is it possible that an enemy was 'shooting from the shadows' to create chaos? Can't the enemy use Kulak's theory too? Crushing the spirit of a people.

okay
LB, losers who kill themselves are sad for sure. Losers who kill babies are worse. Loser.

Now, go smoke some and come back and write

hahahaha tee hee hee giggle snort

brilliant.

oh, and Ann...
We know that your getting old, dear - but "inasmuch" is not a word.

Wiseone...
Well, it's nice to see that us "libs" have helped make you laugh - seeing as how Townhall has now been reduced to a depressing pit of defeatist despair and anguish.

:)

Ron, re; your 10:51
post, Now THAT was funny!

Laura, I don't think Sarah is taking the bait.....

Ann needs to avert criticism from
herself since she is in some important measure responsible for the success of John McCain.

Ann, Hewitt, Medved and others whomped the HECK out of that war drum and the rank and file took the logical step and gave the party (most likely) the soldier veteran, John McCain.

It must be impossible for Ann and the war drum beaters to believe they had a role in McCain's success, so they may blame the likely suspect, the press.

But we learned last summer that the press was at the mercy of the American people when they had a mind for stopping something--the comprehesive immigration bill. So it isn't likely that the American people are so willing to believe the press all the time. And McCain's candidacy was nearly dead at one time despite the help from the press.

So what revived it? How about YEARS and YEARS of rabid, frothing, war drum beating by conservative media elites? And added to that the weaknesses of the alternative candidates.

Conservative media wrote a prescription for a soldier presidential candidate, and then tried to say what all we really needed was an over the counter rememdy.

But that would not cure the disease they had diagnosed.

Mac Moore
We have several Progressives pretending to be Ron Paul or McCain supporters.

The object of the pretense is to allow them to continue insulting Conservatives, angering them against Ron Paul and/or McCain supporters.
I see Wobbie did not deceive you.
We have many new members.
Many are not as they seem.

Think I'll pack in in for tonight.
A pleasure to be here with you.
Stay out of mischief!
(or Don't get caught!)

For the worshiper of the Messiah Barak

Robert Loves Barak's Koolaid
Robert offers that, "McCain will beat Barak like a drum"

Sweet. A very pleasant thought.

But, you can still get some of that out-of-Iraq koolaid from Barak to bolster your resolve to deliver a vote for him, anyway.

Sometimes it's the most obvious thing...
Perhaps the simple truth is that none of the Republican candidates this year are worth a crap. Isn't this possible?

Sarah and Major T - Welcome Posters!
Sarah offers to Ann Coulter, "How about you keep your promise to support Hillary and lay off McCain for a while. We, the other republicans still want to win in November."

Absolutely! I'm on your team!

Sophie, Immortal, attacking the McCain
family is weak. How about we focus on Mr. and Mrs. Hussein who have nothing to be proud of in their adult lives and think that americans should pay for their Ivy league education because the loans were too much! While you are at it, please ask Michelle to release her research paper that she completed in Princeton explaining what is wrong with white americans and why she felt like other students saw her as a black first and a student second. Silly me, I thought it would be a privilege for any person regardless of color to be enrolled into Princeton and Yale, but then again the Obama types are never satisfied and they always want to play the victim. We will cream these self righteous victim playing couple that thinks they are the saviors of this country they seem to hate so much! Vote american pride and vote McCain!

Robert Babbles On Endlessly
Robert offers, "Dont believe it thats fine. Your side is losing"

I am an American. What side are you on?

By the way, Hillary and Barak are serving more of that out-of-Iraq Koolade for your vote, again. You will love the flavor. Enjoy!

Anne, Camp Hillary Needs Your Help
Hillary needs you at the campaign headquarters. Close sources are anxious about the close race in Texas. How about you keep your promise to support Hillary and lay off McCain for a while. We, the other republicans still want to win in November.

ann's latest
Sorry Ann, I'm not ready to play the american republican version of a vietnamese monk and set myeself on fire because I'm not getting what I want. Is McCain the candiate Iwish he was, No. Is he a republican that reagan would recogise and include in the party, yes. Would reagan accept your rantings as good for the party and good for aerica, No

Capt. Wobbie of K Mart
ALL of the military papers were long ago purchased by some major branch of MSM.
They publish ONLY what you Progressives want to hear!

LISTEN UP!
THIS WILL BE HARD FOR YOUR SIMPLE MIND TO GRASP SO TRY EXTRA HARD!

There is only ONE, (1), America.
There is no separate America for the Left side!
Any tax I pay, YOU will also pay.
Any loss of freedom I suffer, YOU will also suffer!
You will also suffer any hardship or inconvenience imposed by Government!

In other words;
We are aboard the same ship.
Get your stupid hand away from the scuttle valve!

CharlieS Has A Handle On The Truth
CharlieS offers, "But the MSM, the whole of the Dimwit party, and all the rest of the lefty's like him are going to bury McCain. He's too weak and will never survive having all his "good friends" turn against him so viciously."

That seems to be the case, for now. Conservatism has become some religious doctrine that demands absolute obedience or off-with-your-head. Ann Coulter has led the charge that we are electing a Pope for our theocracy of Conservatism.

I am hoping that we manage to at least elect someone that can keep the dial right of center. If so, life will improve incrementally. Otherwise, we drift ever closer to Statism - whereby the Government dictates our goods and services.

Laura Bush...Please go to sleep and ...
stop posting....
so that I can too and stop following your posts and not regret that I have missed something! :)

Are you hoping the enemy will use your words in this war like the enemy used Kerry's words in Vietnam?

Robert Believes MSN Absolutely
Robert offers, "The Marines and Army are buckling badly."

Tell that to the Iraqis, Iranians, North Koreans and I bet you will be ignored.

You read articles, out of context, by the Joint-Cheifs-Staff while they negotiate funds. It makes for great press. Do you remember a budget argument that says, "hey, we're great! Life is good, Congress, no money needed here!"? I doubt it.

Good greif!

Hal Donahue/Robert ..I saw...

Robert - Remembers As He Is Taught
Robert offers, "Bush was for the former (stay the course)...he lost. I konw you are a Bush Koolaide Drinker (BKD) but hang on...the next 200 plus days are going to be painful. (for you anyway)"

Stay-the-course was staying Iraq. Bush has won that argument, hands down. Even the Democratic elite know better. They only feed the out-of-Iraq koolaid to their duller constituents for their mindless votes. It works - you voted. We are still in Iraq. At least the koolaid tasted good, huh, Robert (that red mustache looks good on you).

Bush is certainly not my idol of Conservatism. But, this is about electing politicians for office, not Popes for a theocracy. Bush has done well and will be remembered as such.

Hal the enemy Propagandist!
You are an absolute FAILURE!
You have never managed to convince ANYONE of ANYTHING here at TH.
You have wasted your time posting silly nonsense!

And you are willing to prostitute loyalty to Country for notoriety in order to feed your grossly over inflated ego.
