Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

Democrats claim Gen. David Petraeus' report to Congress on the surge was a put-up job with a pre-ordained conclusion. As if their response wasn't.

Democrats yearn for America to be defeated on the battlefield and oppose any use of the military -- except when they can find individual malcontents in the military willing to denounce the war and call for a humiliating retreat.

It's been the same naysaying from these people since before we even invaded Iraq -- despite the fact that their representatives in Congress voted in favor of that war.

Mark Bowden, author of "Black Hawk Down," warned Americans in the Aug. 30, 2002, Los Angeles Times of 60,000 to 100,000 dead American troops if we invaded Iraq -- comparing an Iraq war to Vietnam and a Russian battle in Chechnya. He said Iraqis would fight the Americans "tenaciously" and raised the prospect of Saddam using weapons of mass destruction against our troops, an attack on Israel "and possibly in the United States."

On Sept. 14, 2002, The New York Times' Frank Rich warned of another al-Qaida attack in the U.S. if we invaded Iraq, noting that since "major al-Qaida attacks are planned well in advance and have historically been separated by intervals of 12 to 24 months, we will find out how much we've been distracted soon enough."

This week makes it six years since a major al-Qaida attack. I guess we weren't distracted. But it looks like al-Qaida has been.

Weeks before the invasion, in March 2003, the Times' Nicholas Kristof warned in a couple of columns that if we invaded Iraq, "the Turks, Kurds, Iraqis and Americans will all end up fighting over the oil fields of Kirkuk or Mosul." He said: "The world has turned its back on the Kurds more times than I can count, and there are signs that we're planning to betray them again." He announced that "the United States is perceived as the world's newest Libya."

The day after we invaded, Kristof cited a Muslim scholar for the proposition that if Iraqis felt defeated, they would embrace Islamic fundamentalism.

We took Baghdad in about 17 days flat with amazingly few casualties. There were no al-Qaida attacks in America, no attacks on Israel, no invasion by Turkey, no attacks on our troops with chemical weapons, no ayatollahs running Iraq. We didn't turn our back on the Kurds. There were certainly not 100,000 dead American troops.

But liberals soon began raising yet more pointless quibbles. For most of 2003, they said the war was a failure because we hadn't captured Saddam Hussein. Then we captured Saddam, and Democratic presidential candidate Howard Dean complained that "the capture of Saddam has not made America safer." (On the other hand, Howard Dean's failure to be elected president definitely made America safer.)

Next, liberals said the war was a failure because we hadn't captured Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. Then we killed al-Zarqawi and a half-dozen of his aides in an air raid. Then they said the war was a failure because ... you get the picture.

The Democrats' current talking point is that "there can be no military solution in Iraq without a political solution." But back when we were imposing a political solution, Democrats' talking point was that there could be no political solution without a military solution.

They said the first Iraqi election, scheduled for January 2005, wouldn't happen because there was no "security."

Noted Middle East peace and security expert Jimmy Carter told NBC's "Today" show in September 2004 that he was confident the elections would not take place. "I personally do not believe they're going to be ready for the election in January ... because there's no security there," he said.

At the first presidential debate in September 2004, Sen. John Kerry used his closing statement to criticize the scheduled Iraqi elections saying: "They can't have an election right now. The president's not getting the job done."

About the same time, U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan said he doubted there would be elections in January, saying, "You cannot have credible elections if the security conditions continue as they are now" -- although he may have been referring here to a possible vote of the U.N. Security Council.

In October 2004, Nicholas Lemann wrote in The New Yorker that "it may not be safe enough there for the scheduled elections to be held in January."

Days before the first election in Iraq in January 2005, The New York Times began an article on the election this way:

"Hejaz Hazim, a computer engineer who could not find a job in computers and now cleans clothes, slammed his iron into a dress shirt the other day and let off a burst of steam about the coming election.

"'This election is bogus,' Mr. Hazim said. 'There is no drinking water in this city. There is no security. Why should I vote?'"

If there's a more artful articulation of the time-honored linkage between drinking water and voting, I have yet to hear it.

And then, as scheduled, in January 2005, millions of citizens in a country that has never had a free election risked their lives to cast ballots in a free democratic election. They've voted twice more since then.

Now our forces are killing lots of al-Qaida jihadists, preventing another terrorist attack on U.S. soil, and giving democracy in Iraq a chance -- and Democrats say we are "losing" this war. I think that's a direct quote from their leader in the Senate, Harry Reid, but it may have been the Osama bin Laden tape released this week. I always get those two confused.

OK, they knew what Petraeus was going to say. But we knew what the Democrats were going to say. If liberals are not traitors, their only fallback argument at this point is that they're really stupid.

How does she do it?
How does Ann manage to take some really depressing things, talk about them quite seriously, and yet make me laugh out loud, all in one article?!

Brilliant, simply brilliant.

CTR, better question
How do the liberals lie about the war and our military leadership so much with a straight face?

Ann
Our enemies gain great advantage from the United States dedicating its resources to Iraq. As the Joint Chiefs of Staff and a number of generals have reportedly argued, we need a major drawdown in order to repair Army and Marine Corps readiness, and to rebuild a strategic reserve that may deter our enemies and respond to unexpected crises around the globe. No? Want to keep disarming America? Even the General says America? Safer? I have no clue. That was the "nicest" answer he could give. Why do you keep wanting to strip our military in a time of war. Just greed I guess.

The Crawfish
Better question is: How are extreme conservatives supporting disarming our military? Look at the stateside numbers?

The Crawfish's question.
Very simple. Liberals can lie and keep what appears to be a straight face, simply because nobody has ever seen a liberal face that wasn't telling a lie. It's like the drunk who went undiscovered until he accidentally showed up sober one day.

Excellent Ann, Thank You
Thank you Ann Coulter for this column. My older son is a U.S. Army First Lieutenant (with Ranger tab) serving in harm's way as an infantry platoon leader in Iraq, and I know how hard what our magnificent military guys do is and what they are accomplishing. I am angry almost beyond words that the Democrats have attacked so shamelessly an outstanding military leader in General Petraeus. I think that the Democrats are guilty of treason because they are not stupid. They are, however, vile low life scum.

the bear
I was goin g to say something about D's and their weakness concerning alcohal but then I kept laughing too hard over Vitter, Craig, shall I go on and on?

Phil Byler
"I am angry almost beyond words that the Democrats have attacked so shamelessly an outstanding military leader in General Petraeus. I think that the Democrats are guilty of treason because they are not stupid. They are, however, vile low life scum. "

Love you too Phil. Grow up you claim to be a lawyer and you are "shocked" LMAO. Stop trying to change the subject. The surge was to provide time for a political solution. The surge did the Iraqis did not. That means surge failed. Simple straight line.

Hate Speech
Recounting the Democrats previous positions is hate speech. Backing it up with specific examples is a hate-filled diatribe, a genre for which Anne Coulter is well known. Siding with Nazi Bush and the neocons against the legitimate hopes of a few misunderstood militants shows a level of disgusting cultural ethnocentricity that is certain to make Ms. Coulter's more unstable readers dislike our misunderstood friends from the Third World and use the rascist slur 'terrorists' to describe their just response to a world gone mad with Global Capitalism.
Cant we all just get along? Now we're supposed to cheer some 'general' because he's 'winning' a war when the money we've wasted on this colonial enterprise could be much better spent subsidizing the Democrats' campaign contributors. What about the Children. Are useless pronouncements about 'progress', however accurate, going the make their lives any better? So keep fulminating your rage and obloquy Anne, us sane people know that the way to overcome a murderous opponent is to lay down your arms and negotiate.

Elections
The telling point in Iraqi history is the turnouts for the first Election. Imagine Americans being put under threat of death if they went out to vote and then had an ink-stain on a finger for proof they had. Rome wasn't built in a day and neither was the United States, why do people think Iraq should be?

Anne Coulter is right ... again!
"Democrats claim Gen. David Petraeus' report to Congress on the surge was a put-up job with a pre-ordained conclusion. As if their response wasn't."

Anne, you are so CORRECT. ALL one has to do is observe the PRE=EMPTIVE strike/actions of Moveon.org in publishing their New York Times ad PRIOR to General Petraeus' testimony to understand that WHATEVER the General said was NOT going to satisfy his detractors on the FAR LEFT!

Again, keep up the good work.

Independence was the idea of the US and Rome. It was not the idea of the Iraqi people it was the idea of a failed leader called GW

HURRAH, ANN COULTER
As usual, and in your unique way with the English language, you have nailed it again.

Your comment about Harry Reid was priceless.

Your book "Godless," which I bought to read a while back, is in the clutches of my husband. He has immensely enjoyed reading it; I look forward to doing the same.

One thing my husband has said about your writings: nobody has come forward to dispute anything you've written -- they can't.

Thank goodness for your writings. Funny, truthful, wry, to the point, etc., ad infinitum.

Oh
Hal, you are right, we shouldn't help anyone else have freedom. My bad. point taken.

To Hal Donohue
You are flat wrong in asserting that the surge has failed. The surge has succeeded in creating dramatically improved security conditions in Iraq; and with those improved security conditions, political conditions are improving as well, as Iraqis have been rejecting the radical Islamists and have turned to supporting the Americans and the Iraqi government that the Iraqi people democratially elected.

You declare that the surge has failed because you perversely and stupidly want America to lose. You along with the leftists and the Democrats who share the desire to lose in Iraq are, however, the real losers. It may not be in 2008, but the time will come soon enough when America rejects you people.

Bowden is no leftist
Mark Bowden earned the trust of the warriors Ann claims to support, which is why he has written far more informative work than she ever has or ever will. Ann cites Black Hawk Down on the way to dismissing his warning of large casualty estimates, but this is the man who has written _Killing Pablo_, and _Guests of the Ayatollah: The Iran Hostage Crisis: The First Battle in America's War with Militant Islam_. This is in addition to articles in the Atlantic Monthly like "Tales of the Tyrant" (giving us a chilling picture of the real danger Saddam posed), "The Kabul-ki Dance," telling us about the stunning impact of the synergy between aviators and special operators in Afghanistan, and "The Dark Side of Interrogation" -- an objective look at the degrees between interrogation and torture that challenges readers to think through what they really support and why.

But those are just facts, not something to get in the way of a Coulter drive-by.

Skep41
I hope you are taking a stab at satire. It's hard to tell--I heard a similarly nonsensical rant on campus today from someone who was surely serious (in the loosest sense of the word).

Same old, Same old...
This latest column by Ann Coulter was the predictable Bush Cult dribble that we've been hearing since the war in Iraq started. Of course you can always find quotes that went awry, subscribe those quotes to all liberals, and then accuse liberals of being wrong. We could follow the same logic and list the quotes made by those in this Administration: that Iraqi oil revenues would fund the occupation, that it would cost less than 150 billion, and that we would be down to 30,000 troops by now, and that we "turned a corner" in the last election. All predictions were wildly wrong, but that hasn't even caused a speed bump in Ann's overwhelming Bush cultism. It's truly a sight to behold.

Her other points are the regular specious reasoning and fallacious commentary that is to be expected from someone suffering from an extreme case of Bush cultism. That al-Qaeda has not engineered another terrorist attack against the United States is true, but that doesn't mean our invasion of Iraq has prevented another terrorist attack. Perhaps the threat and capacity of Al-Qaeda has been greatly exaggerated and they simply lack the resources to carry out another attack. Or perhaps they're waiting patiently. Or perhaps they are happy to let America waste way in the desert of Iraq. Why give Americans a renewed cause to pursue them when our President is destroying our military in the strategically useless operation in Iraq. There are various reasons why al-Qaeda may not have decided to execute another attack, but there is no reason to assume it's due to the Iraq invasion.

Does Ann have specific information that our invasion of Iraq has disrupted a plan by al-Qaeda to attack in the United States? If she does, she's never said and neither has our intelligence. So we can assume it's more Bush propaganda for now.

Ann also fails to actually define victory and we are to achieve victory. But that kind of thinking is way over her head, so I'll let it pass.

hey skep
who should she side with. you nazi left wing dumb*ss idiots who are traitors and hate God. no thanks.....hal, you still need two working brain cells to figure things out. the math doesn't change

Ann
Great column and I look forward to your new book!

CABrown
She did not assert anything of a sort. she said his prediction did not come true, which it didn't.

Hal
"Independence was the idea of the US and Rome. It was not the idea of the Iraqi people it was the idea of a failed leader called GW"

Yes, I'm sure the Iraqis long for those blissful days under Saddam's benevolent regime, nostalgic for the good ol' days of acid baths, rape rooms and wood-chippers.

Hal Donohue
As usual you pick one little point, take it out of context, then twist. It is not Petreaus' job to secure the United States. His job is to fight the war in Iraq. It is the President's job to take measures utilizing all areas of military, intelligence, and law enforcement to secure the country.

You know this though. You just want to manipulate people in order to advance your agenda.

Have you answered ALL of your questions yet?

Apollyon67
"Oh Hal, you are right, we shouldn't help anyone else have freedom. My bad. point taken."

Was that what we voted to do?

libs make me laugh
red tooth, skep, and hal. show me your military credentials to make judgments on whether the war is being won or not. you make grandiose statements that play well to your side but are not close to the truth.

Hal Donahue: Quisling
You don't even bother trying to refute the facts laid out by Coulter. You digress instead into inane Beltway Democratic talking points jibber-jabber. Your 9:41 PM post is incoherent.

You have thrown in your lot with the scum that has attempted to besmirch the honor of one of this nation's finest military leaders - General David Petraeus.

I have two questions for you Mr. Quisling - Do you stand behind or renounce the statements made by Biden, Pelosi, Lantos, Wexler, et al, with regards to the dispersions made on the character of Gen. Petraeus? Are you calling Gen. Petraeus a liar?

Don't confuse the Left with the facts
The Lefties are used to playing fast and loose with the truth.

It does not matter to them what the facts are, they will continually shape-shift in order to keep up their wearwolf-like howling and railing against their sworn enemy- the United States of America.

"But they live here!" you may say. "why in the heck would they hate the USA and plan its demise?"

"Ya got me," I reply. "I love the country myself, and am amazed at the deep well of hatred the Left bears for her. But there it is."

France
Hal, did the French vote to help us against England?

Phil Byler
"You are flat wrong in asserting that the surge has failed. The surge has succeeded in creating dramatically improved security conditions in Iraq; and with those improved security conditions, political conditions are improving as well, as Iraqis have been rejecting the radical Islamists and have turned to supporting the Americans and the Iraqi government that the Iraqi people democratially elected."

The purpose of the surge was to allow for political unification. Did it succeed no it did not. Ergo the surge failed.

"You declare that the surge has failed because you perversely and stupidly want America to lose. You along with the leftists and the Democrats who share the desire to lose in Iraq are, however, the real losers. It may not be in 2008, but the time will come soon enough when America rejects you people."

I wantb the US to hunt down and destroy the terrorists who caused 9/11. The mere fact that Osama released TWO videos in TWO days shows how powerless Iraq has made us. if you would stop using your emotion you would see it. Baby you are done. It is over

marc
"red tooth, skep, and hal. show me your military credentials to make judgments on whether the war is being won or not. you make grandiose statements that play well to your side but are not close to the truth."

No grandiose words here I leave those to the sissy in the white house. Google me

Marc
I can't speak to the military credentials of red tooth and skep, but I cannot wait for Hal Donahue to present his credentials. While you are waiting for it, I will go ahead and tell you he is a retired Air Force desk jockey, and one who has been plugged in to the Democratic political machine since day one. His hero is Benedict Murtha and I believe he may have current or recent working ties with him. He used to have a blog or something on Huffington, but they may have thrown him off for idiocy or something. I know several people who are familiar with Mr. Quisling's service-related shenanigans and will be happy to fill in any gaps in his memory.

can you see it guys
a toothless osama releases a vidio and that in and of its self means osama is winning the war against us. man, what logic. he is in a cave somewhere mumbling to himself and drooling on himself. but to hal thats a great and mighty victory over the american army. go figure.

Your next assignments Ann
More noise needs to be made about the censorship and then shelving of The Path to 9/11 and its DVD. How can that not be funny when it ends with Sandy Berger wiping his butt with Top Secret documents?

Norman Hsu goes nuts on a train, thinking that the Clintons were going to assassinate him. At least if I act crazy, I won't have to answer any questions.

Finally, something about Hillary's presence in the room when Bill sold several hundred pardons for millions of dollars. I want her to repeat her claim that she wasn't involved. "Hey, Hill, we can get half a million for these guys. They were only Puerto Rican terrorists!"

"I didn't hear that, honey. Half a million, you say. Is that okay with the Chinese. WE don't want to get on their bad side. Ha Ha Ha."

SandMan

"You have thrown in your lot with the scum that has attempted to besmirch the honor of one of this nation's finest military leaders - General David Petraeus."

Oh really? Why do you say that? Every project he has made for the past four years was wrong. He is a big boy and your whining is a diversion from the FACT that the surge failed to accomplish its goal.

"I have two questions for you Mr. Quisling - Do you stand behind or renounce the statements made by Biden, Pelosi, Lantos, Wexler, et al, with regards to the dispersions made on the character of Gen. Petraeus? Are you calling Gen. Petraeus a liar? "

Some one called him a liar? Oh show me? Did he select his stats with great care? Oh yes. but he was honest like he could not say the war in Iraq made the US safer. He knows it does not

HalDoesaspewCABrownoseYlrtooth
Yup, all that Readiness and Strategic Reserve sure did deter Al Qaida before! Bring em home so we'll be ready when Canada Invades!

Our enemies are IN Iraq, Hal. In Syria which borders Iraq, in Iran which borders Iraq, in Afghanistan which is next door. Iraq is at the CENTER of the STRATEGIC Political, Economic and Religious Centers of Gravity, so by all means let's stay AWAY from there! Killing them in THEIR front yard gives them SUCH an advantage!
Cowering here waiting for the next 911 will make us SO much stronger.
And how could I fail to see that 5 more years of Soddem in power, working on Nukes and Biologicals would make my family SO much SAFER!!

And FORGIVE me for thinking that a bunch of Sandbunnies could actually be capable of WANTING to be Free and to have a SAY in who rules them--I should have known better.

Well, it seems that halD can't

RedHugh&Kalifornia Brown (Jerry?)
So let's see, the Iraqis haven't managed to get 14 Centuries of Religious and Family feuds completely cleared up in 5 years--the slow pokes!
I mean WE were SO Much Faster going from Yorktown to the Constitution weren't we? Well true we did leave a few "unresolved issues" that needed a civil war 80 years later--but still WE got it RIGHT! And our head start in the English Parlimentary System is SO overrated. Those Sandbunnies just aren't fit for Democracy.
Hey it's the 21st Century--it has to be done NOW or I'm going to Vote Them Off the Planet!!!

Hey JerryBrown--Bowden was FULL OF YSHITEY--so I don't think he knows what the yhell he is talking about! Neither do you.

Red ya ol sod--What's your evidence for it having no effect? Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence. Seems a pretty straight forward calculation that every Islanazi we kill in Iraq AIN'T available for 911 Training--not to mention what their own documents say. Personally I don't think you're safer to let the Rabid Dog Lie.
Hal (now why do I think of "Daisy Daisy") I don't know you well enough to google you on the first date. But I wouldn't care if you were a 5 Star with the Medal of Honor and 5 tours in Iraq.
I want MY Military killing MY enemies WHEREVER they are--Soddem was my enemy, AlQaida is my enemy--all Sandnazis everywhere are my enemies, Religious, Secular, Arab, Persian, Asian, don't care. And I ain't waitin for them to work out their differences--I want them all dead now! I don't want 911 arrests--I want 30,000 Islanazis slaughtered ever Sept 11 unti they are ALL DEAD.
If you think leaving Soddem alone, or Amentothejihad Alone make us safer then it is YOU who believe the falsehood.

I suspect you will be back when I leave. In the case: BOO!

Oh Hal
I am over here. Sandman didn't make the qoute about France, I did. A Monarchy, eh? Well shucks, we should have refused their help on general priciple. Does it matter where the help comes from when you are drowning? Naa, you have a king, I'll wait until a citizen stops by to help me.

for Phil Byler
Phil Byler writes: 'My older son is a U.S. Army First Lieutenant (with Ranger tab) serving in harm's way as an infantry platoon leader in Iraq.... I am angry almost beyond words that the Democrats have attacked so shamelessly"

How many times are you going to cite your SON as if that gives you some special insight into Iraq or some special insight into domestic politics?

You're the right-wing answer to Cindy Sheehan: She said because she was a mom of a soldier that meant we should listen to what she had to say about the war. You're saying that because you are the dad of a soldier that means we should listen to you. Kerry said he served in Vietnam and so we should listen to him on Iraq. On and on.

I'm sick and tired of ANYONE who uses either their own background as a veteran or a loved one who is serving as some kind of rhetorical deflector shield to hide behind to avoid criticism. Next comes the part where all the conservatives here thank you and your son for your sacrifice, and in so doing change the subject away from the fact that your views on Iraq are dead wrong.

This mutual admiration society of military people ("I served in Nam." "I did too!" "You did good" "So did you") is working as a self-reinforcing groupthink.

And I'm sick and tired of it.
If townhall.com wants to be the American Legion or Veterans of Foreign Wars by another name, they should say so and just ban anyone who didn't serve in the military from participating in the discussions here. That would save us all a lot of time and effort.

Hal--what are you doing Dave?
And you plan to engage the Chinese Where?
I would remind you that it was a CONSERVATIVE, Barry Goldwater, who suggested we Nuke the Red Chinese Problem BEFORE they started Buying Democrat Politicians.

Now if what you really mean, Hal, is that we should stealthbomb and cruise missle back to the stone age ANYBODY who gives aid to the Islanazis then I am all for it. Teheran and Damascus should already be smoking holes in the ground and there shouldn't be a factory in China capable of making anything but Cigarettes.
I would LOVE to see ALL of China one vast glass skating rink.

If you are really afraid of em then get all their shipping containers off the road--they might have 100 Divisions inside. And keep their merchant vessels the hell out of US ports--can't torpedo em INSIDE San Diego or Hampton Roads.

Who do you think China is USING to fight their proxy war? Or are you seriously saying "Invade Iraq BAD, Invade China Good!"
You, the military genius forgetting "Don't do a land war in Asia?"

China with a client state aside the Middle East oil fields, now there's a Strategic Victory for ya, Hal.

I note you did not rebut my assessment of the Strategic Centers of Gravity.

Yeah and Doctor Germ was rehersing for his stint on Last Comic Standing. Guess the Brits should have read Mein Kampf and just let Hitler have Poland and France. And we should never have begun the Manhattan Project--All Dictators who use Poison Gas on their own people just want to be understood thru their Prose.
Thief or Terrorist--remind me, which one Invaded Iran and Kuwait and Saudi Arabia and threatened most of the World's Oil Supply (and blew it up)--yeah I guess he was just a Punk Vandal--no biggie.
Hordes of Yellow Red Infantry swimming the Bearing Straight and Invading Alaska--that's REALLY scary--almost as Scary as Democrat Presidential Candidates bankrolled by the Yellow Reds.

"red tooth, skep, and hal. show me your military credentials to make judgments on whether the war is being won or not."

You're correct. I don't have credentials in getting the United States military into an operationally pointless and strategically unnecessary war. We are not going to kill our way into a solution in Iraq. The problems in Iraq are due to the inextricable nature of Iraq itself -- its borders are artificial, it's still tribal, it's plagued by sectarian conflict, it has no history of democracy or free institutions etc. Military credentials don't matter -- we are nation building.

Tell me who has the credentials to turn Iraq into a modern nation-state that doesn't support terrorism, and will also be sovereign? Military cannot do it. Politicians cannot do it.

Sadly, there were those of us who warned against this disaster, but I guess little Annie Coulter was too busy calling us "traitors," "liberals," or whatever to listen.

Red Tooth
Correct me if I'm wrong, but we had no history of democracy or free elections prior to our revolutionary war to free ourselves from the Brits. I've never understood the "no history of democracy" arguement.

A catchy title ...
And an excellent article.

Big Mick,

Saints preserve us! Are you into the 10-year-old Bushmills? Your writing is atrocious. I'm not sure whether I agree or disagree with you, Mick. Joyce and Yeats must be spinning in their graves to know that a son of the Emerald Isle writes in such a way.

I think your speakn of Russian type democracy. lol
But, I understand your point. What I meant was trully free elections, top to bottom.

Off point a bit...
...but, since Ann mentioned Kerry, I have to relate this impression I have of him. Whenever, WHENEVER, I see John Kerry speaking I am reminded of the scene from JAWS aboard the Orca the 1st evening after the actors: Schneider, Shaw, & Dreyfus have 1st seen the Shark. The Shaw & Dreyfus characters are swapping stories about their previous encounters with Sharks, & then Schneider asked Shaw about a scar. Then Shaw reveals in WWII he had been aboard the torpedoed and sunk USS Indianapolis and the scar was a close encounter Shark as it passed by him in the water. What he said about the Shark reminds me of John Kerry, "a Shark has lifeless eyes, dolls eyes, you don't know its alive until it has a hold of you". But Kerry doesn't look living ever, more Zombie-like, come to think of it Harry Reid..., etc...

Good One Ann
Yes Ann, I had posted a comment several months ago similar to this. The Dems prior to Bush being elected all said essentially the same thing Bush said about justification for war in Iraq. Also, most of them voted FOR the war with Iraq. But lo, that was because the vote was held before the congressional elections of 2002. As soon as those elections were over the Dems began their assault on the war, even before it started. You see, at the time of the vote the majority of the voters supported the war and the Repubs were not going to let them off the hook as had occurred in the original Gulf War. In that war a large portion of the Dems voted against the war, citing the usual quagmire and other lying Dem talking points. Well the war was over in "100 hour" and the Dems looked like the idiots that they were. The only thing that saved their bacon was the fact that it was a long time to an accounting in an election. My own Senator Ernest Frederick "Fritz" Hollings had his popularity rating drop to 10% as a result of voting against Gulf war I, but after a suitable interval the "people" forgot and he was reelected. If he had had to stand for election within a few months of that war he would have lost big time. They forget because a lot of them don’t care about what goes on anyway and the news media surely will not remind them of something that embarrasses a Democrat. But ultimately what this shows id that politicians in general, and Democrats in particular, will take ANY stand that will give them an election and then will revert back to their core beliefs afterwards, regardless of the consequences.

Who gives a crap how much it costs? How many trillions of $$$ have we spent on "the war on poverty"? That war is way more 'unwinnable' than the war in Iraq-- and has NO bearing on our security at all, as opposed to the beat down we're giving Jihadis in Mesopotamia.

Keep on truckin' Anne. You rock.

"The purpose of the surge was to allow for political unification. Did it succeed no it did not. Ergo the surge failed."

What? You have a micro-wave mentality. Pop it in, push button, ergo...it's done.

Liberals are hard-wired for insanity. They are so refelexively Bush haters that if Bush walked on water, they'd sneer "Bush can't swim. If Bush passed gold bricks out his rear, they scream "Bush guilty of smearing."

You people are so predictable. One only needs to conjure up an insane twist on something and you guys always come through.

unstated
"He who controls the past controls the future. He who controls the present controls the past."

No wonder the usual agitators ignore the meat of Anne's argument (yet again). So long as conservatives keep notes on what the Left says and does, and reminds folks of it afterwards, the Left will almost always look bad. I was surprised that there was no mention in the article of how a previous enemy was unsuited for freedom or democratic governments. Or is Japan still a hotbed?

Although we must remind ourselves that the Left do occasionally get something right, for the broken clock reason if nothing else.

Ya ever notice

Regarding the war on poverty: please note that the poverty line is set as a proportion of the population, so it's physically impossible to "defeat poverty". The usual "more of the poor today have air conditioning than the average citizen 30 years ago" arguments were hashed over in the last few days.

I agree with you on this one, but I'm not sure that you've looked on the flip side: the Left wants to be able to shift the goalposts on Iraq and the War on Terror(ists) in the same way that they do in the war on poverty. I think that this is also part of my above statement about using historical recidivism to get to whatever the desired future-state will be.

Impact
You are so right. I quickly realized it was totally pointless to try to discuss anything with the object of light, not heat, with the liberal driveby posters. Over many many posts, i've never seen any acknowlegement that any left winger ever did any wrong or was ever mistaken. They vigorously defend men like Chappaquidick Ted and Freezerbucks Jeff. The closest they ever come to admitting to less than perfection is to say "You guys do it more and worse". Why bother to even read their stuff, let alone expend effort to refute. I do enjoy reading some of the wittier putdowns. This is why Coulter drives them nuts. Issue-wise, Coulter is a bit lightweight compared to Malkin or Sowell and Coulter is sparse on lighting candles as composed to cursing the darkness. Still, she is fun to read, and its even better to imagine the sputtering red leftwing faces as they see themselves hoist by their own petard again and again.

That's Jimmy "the Dhimmi" Carter! Kissing the a**es of dictators and murderers decades. EVERY problem in the M.E. can be traced to Dhimmi Carter's betrayal of the Iranians. He gave the Islamofascists the FIRST step that they outlined in "Milestones" by Qutb.

It baffles me how anyone can pay any attention whatsoever to people like Carter who have been invariably wrong over and over and over. Yet supposedly otherwise intelligent and functioning people consider him exactly that, and use his statements to support their own opinions. Go figure??? Another frustrating twink the lefties seem to have no trouble handling is flip flops, not just on tactics, but on principles. All the top tier GOP candidates are raindancing around previous statements they are now contradicting. Rudy and Romney being elected in Blue states, i suppose its logical to expect they might go left for expediency, but it bothers me and lots of other people. I don't see much of this doubt from the left. Maybe its on Move.org or someplace. Not on TH.

Hal Donhaue Sounds like Phil on Valium
After reading his posts, tagging him with “Quisling” is apropos. I just finished rereading Rise and Fall of the Third Riech and William Manchester’s two volumes on the life of Winston Churchill.

Norwegian fascist politician Vidkun Quisling’s fawning and self serving betrayal of his nations interest for his own personal gain is an excellent historic reference to interpret the behavior of today’s Democrat Party leadership. Since Hal is willing to ignore reality and spout there blather, he should be prepared to accept the label.

Ann’s article is superb. Especially the last line.

the lack of acknowledgment of failure of a leftist icon is a surprise to whom? When a new topic comes up (ie global warming in the early days) I try to find out what Paul Ehrlich's view is so I know which side is wrong from the get-go.

Liberals, Try Answering THE QUESTION
The ONLY way the "progressives" on this site will be able to detract from her conclusions, would be to take Ms. Coulter's assertions, one by one, and refute them.

Absent any such refutation, then Coulter's premise will have to stand: The Democrats WANT the US to be defeated, otherwise why would these slime buckets continuously reverse positions when the previous one has been proven wrong?

Unless and until you demonstrate which of Coulter's assertions are in error, the rest of us will continue laughing at your futility (and stupidity, of course).

Question
Reading Hal's posts relating to a variety of columns makes me wonder about something that has been mentioned a few times on TH.

Does anyone know for a fact if there really are people either paid or enlisted as volunteer "foot soldiers" by lib/Democrat organizations to post on TH and other conservative blogs? If so, what is their purpose? To "sow seeds of disunity"? To win the hearts and minds of undecided voters who are sampling TH for the first time?

Just wondering.

Safer Now Than Then
A cautionary note. As General Petraeus states, he does not know if we are safer post or pre- Saddam/Iraq war.

Some folks have used the rationale that we're fighting them there so we won't have to fight them here, or citing the fact that there has not been a successful attack on US soil since 9-11 as proof that we must be doing something right.

Be careful with these. While there are kernels of truth in both statements, terrorists are in all likelihood coming in in droves through our porous borders, and we know there are various cells in operation here. I believe that it is partly a matter of pure luck that we have not been already struck here, and struck hard, and in ways that might be too horrendous to imagine.

Will this again unite us or pull us further apart? Conservatives will say that this is is more evidence of the reality and nature of the threat and why we must fight them aggressively and stamp them out at all costs. The liberals will say it's all Bush's fault for taking his eye off the ball and being distracted from the real enemy, for invading Iraq and making them madder, whatever.

We need to prepare because it is coming our way.

Let him go.

W.T.F. OVER?

Just read your post at 9:31PM.

Here is what you bleated:

"we need a major drawdown in order to repair Army and Marine Corps readiness, and to rebuild a strategic reserve that may deter our enemies and respond to unexpected crises around the globe."

Do you KNOW HOW STUPID that sounds? We need to DRAWDOWN to rebuild readiness?

Let me get this straight. We do a drawdown like we did in 91 (I went through that) get rid of experienced troops, then get recruits in, and? make them experienced troops?

It takes 6-8 YEARS for a person to get GOOD in their MOS and longer for real technical MOS's.

So, using your circular file type logic, we cutback on experienced troops, get recruits in, and then spend YEARS getting to a good state of readiness?

Seems to me our troops are doing a d*mn good job NOW! A 30 to 1 KILL RATIO? Not bad. Of course you libscum wish it were the other way around so you'd be able to surrender faster!

You. Are. An. Idiot.

If its good enough...
"Phil Byler writes:
You are flat wrong in asserting that the surge has failed.

If its good enough for New York Communist Times, Times Square, Los Anglo-Saxon Hitler and most of the communist news outlets here in America that is to say we have lost, we should tuck our tails and come home, al-q wants to love us not hate us, Islam is just like Uncle Joe Stalin a kind loving individual who is just mis-understood and really truly loves America, then it should be good enough for Hal!

Savage99
Thanks, you are probably right with your last comments, but it seems that most of them are more interesting in picking a fight or being provocative rather than in any type of dialogue or persuasion.

I did see one thread a few months ago between a guy called PopYoColla and various TH posters where he started off hostile, went around and around almost all night, and it ended up with good, productive dialogue and common ground on both sides. That is the very, very rare exception.

I see conservatives say regularly things like, "I don't like all of the results of the prosecution of the war, and I share your frustration on some things, but I feel we must stay because..." Conversely, you never see libs give one inch on any of their positions, ever. They are always totally right and we are totally wrong. Kind of like arguing about religion with someone.

More bad predictions
Lets not forget all the predictions of "environmental catastrophy" that were supposed to have happened because of the war in Iraq. And millions of refugees flooding into Turkey.

Michael Moore predicted that Osama bin Laden would be presented to the US public in October 2004, to ensure Bush's re-election. He also predicted that Bush would re-instate the draft.

So it is good news that lefties are predicting that the US will lose the war in Iraq, since they are consistantly wrong.

Kudos on picking out the best quote from today's article. I had to wipe my computer screen after reading about Jimmah and his noted expertise. All laughs aside, this was one of the least acerbic columns Ann has written. She recorded straight, verifiable facts with some excellent humor. Usually there is at least one mean-spirited shot at someone, but not this time. What the h*ll are the libs/progs upset with now? She didn't make fun of any "protected" classes or unfortunates. And still they have to resort to name calling and innuendo because they cannot refute a single fact. They keep seeking to move the bar and redefine parameters; Hal glibly states that "OBL has not been found" then later states that, when we do get him "well the damage has already been done". This is exactly what we are talking about- it is never enough for them. No success is great enough and no defeat is ever small and we always believe the vermin enemy over our own troops. I just have to ignore these fools. Thank God Gunny has the stomach to address them, I just get too frustrated.

Why can't Bush be MORE like JFK?
Had GWB embraced JFK's version of democracy building, the Iraqis would STILL be waiting to vote in their FIRST election. Kennedy never let the S. Vietnamese hold an election. This is one of the FIRST things GWB asked the Iraqis to do, and they came out in DROVES to do just that and rub it in the face of all the doubting Thomases who sit on the LEFT side of BOTH Houses of Congress.

Quote from Howard Dean
"The president MUST withdraw forces so we can declare our loss to the world! The United States cannot continue to win where ever it goes because in doing so, we make other countries feel bad when our victory results in their defeat. RAAARRRG!"

Why have the Democrats kept changing the standard for "success" in Iraq?

It is, of course, Democrats CAN'T STAND that the US keeps winning. Democrats have spent the past 60 years trying to dismantle the United States so other nations around the world don't look like such monumental losers by comparison. The Democrat mantra is "If everyone can't be a winner, then NO ONE should be a winner." You see this attitude shine through in EVERY policy Democrats make -- from their economic policies that punnish the successful among us to their international diplomatic policies that grant every other nation on the planet a portion of our national treasure for nothing in return.

Democrats are anti-American traitors, and their ever-changing standard for "success" in Iraq is incontrovertible proof of that.

Hal is a Veteran
And should be afforded the opportunity to express himself like anyone else. Even if he was only in the Air Force.

He does have a point though. Our all-volunteer military has been taking a beating with the multiple deployments, especially the NG and Reserves. As a Guard or Reservist, you can set your clock that every 6 years you will be activated for a maximum of 24 months. Active units are completing 3rd and beginning their 4th tours. This is a real concern. That is not to say that the troops aren't willing and able, but it is having a telling toll.

There is no plan outside of grabbing the White House and consolidating power in the house and senate. It is that stunningly simple. They have no convictions and no sense of or belief in right and wrong. Put a question to Mr Hal and he will not answer it, ever. He will change the subject, obfuscate, and seek to reframe the question. He does not outright lie that I have seen but neither will he answer a question. He certainly has the right to be heard, and ignored, regardless of his record of service to the country. Don't fall for that line, it quickly devolves into the chickenhawk argument favored by libs (that have never served either).
