What was the biggest suprise of Election Day?

Conservatives often ask why so many Republicans go native when they get to Washington, D.C. The answer is: Because you don't defend them when they come under relentless attacks from liberal hatchet men.

Lewis Libby did what you wanted. He didn't place secret phone calls to reporters revealing classified intelligence programs. He supported the war on Islamic fascists. He didn't try to raise your taxes like James Baker III. And he has loyally served Dick Cheney, the man conservatives secretly wish were president.

And now he's on trial for -- at worst -- misremembering who first told him that future reality show contestant Joseph Wilson was sent on a boondoggle to Niger by his wife, Valerie Plame.

The way Libby remembered it, NBC's Tim Russert was the first one to tell him. But the way Russert remembers it, he didn't tell Libby about Wilson's wife. (And the way Wilson remembers it, he was sent to Niger by Captain Kirk of the Starship Enterprise.)

Try this: Who told you Wilson was sent to Niger by his wife? Who told you a bipartisan Senate panel concluded that Joe Wilson was lying when he denied that his wife had sent him to Niger? While we're at it, who was the first person to correct you on your pronunciation of "Niger"?

I don't remember, either -- and I'm not running a war.

The exact same people who are now demanding prison for Libby for not remembering who told him about Plame are the ones who told us it was perfectly plausible for Bill Clinton to forget that Monica Lewinsky repeatedly performed oral sex on him in the Oval Office. Even if chubby Jewish brunettes aren't your type, be honest: Which of the two events would stand out more in your memory?

Perjury is intentionally swearing to something you know to be untrue -- not misremembering what later appears, on balance, not to be the truth.

Here are some simple illustrations. If Clinton had been asked how many sexual encounters it took for him to remember Monica's name (six) and he got the answer wrong, it would not be perjury since, like Monica's name, it's an easy thing to forget.

If Clinton had been asked whether he talked to Rep. Jim Chapman and then to Rep. John Tanner, or to Rep. Tanner and then to Rep. Chapman while Monica was performing oral sex on him in the Oval Office and he got the answer wrong, that would not be perjury because it's not relevant to the investigation. (Correct answer: Chapman, then Tanner.)

But when Clinton was asked under oath -- in a case brought by Paula Jones under the law liberals consider more sacrosanct than any passed in the 20th century, Section 1983 of the Civil Rights Act: "Mr. President ... at any time were you and Monica Lewinsky alone together in the Oval Office?" and he answered, "I don't recall," that was perjury.

Now take the question: "Who first told you fantasist Wilson was sent to Niger by his wife?" Unless it actually was Captain Kirk of the Starship Enterprise -- the answer to that question is not going to be perjurious. No matter how many witnesses swear they told Libby first, if Libby honestly believed it was Russert, he didn't commit perjury. Continued...

slacker. RE: Foolish Ann
wow - your post is so backwards its not worth even trying to explain. You try and make two points:

1. "But in Clinton's case the alleged issue was an extramarital affair that had nothing to do with his job as President of the US "

wrong.

2. "In Scooter's case there is an actual national security issue involved in his attempting to obstruct an investigation into the outing of an under cover CIA agent."

LoL. We are all in the GRAVEST danger now.

As for Clinton being a great president - that will only beknown once the effects of his presidency can be weighed. Sandy Berger is doing his best to make sure there is no evidence.

Conservatives stand up!
It is ridiculous to liken Clinton's lie about his booty call with Bush and Cheney's lie that Iraq has an active WMD program and ties to 9-11 and has immediate plans to threaten Americans.

No comparison, really. It's now understood that numerous presidents, Republican and Democrat, liberal and conservative have had extramarital sex, going all the way back to founding baby-daddy Thomas Jefferson. He may have been slumming but at least Clinton didn't wear dresses and guess what, the American people knew he cheated on his wife long before he was democratically elected.

The first time the press went public with a scandal so damaging to an active president was when right wing dirty trickster Linda Tripp forced their hand. As far as we should all be concerned, what Clinton did with Monica is no more our business then whether Ann Coulter has broken God's Commandment against adultery or is still waiting for a sweaty right wing lummox to penetrate her maidenhood.

All those screaming that the office of the president is to be revered need to know that besides Tripp illegally taping conversations, loads of right wing money came flooding in to make Paula Jones' lawsuit and a special prosecutor viable.

When Ann decries Libby's witch hunt, she needs to keep it real and mention the hundreds of millions of private and public (yes yours) money spent in disproving Clintons lie about "sex with that woman" so they could nail him on something, anything. $90 million taxpayer dollars later, they proved the lie and then...well not much, Clinton set a new record high for approval ratings when he left office, leaving envious Bush supporters to continue their witch hunt long past any importance.

Then too, Ann and her hypocritical ilk carry on an intense smear campaign against the Wilsons, calling them everything from gloryhounds to liars. In discussing the merits of their arguments however, this falls apart. As Philo has shared, the "liar" label seems to have been trumpeted by the Limbaughs and bloggers rather then actual published citations.

Does not the discussion of the Wilson's credibility need to stop at the point that the White House issued that statement that the 16 words never should have been included in the state of the union address?

Wilson's goal was to dispute Bush's misremembering that the Niger uranium evidence was horribly weak. Bush immediately admitted such, and there the story should have ended as should have the drumbeats to war, except Cheney had other plans - to plot revenge on Wilson (Muhuhahaha!!) and continue the charade that would finalize in the illegal invasion of Iraq.

Cheney had his vengeance, but the Wilson's didn't take it sitting down, remembering George H.W. Bush's firm credo that exposing an undercover CIA operative was no less then an act of treason.

Not that anyone cared, but agent Plame's longstanding top secret mission at the agency was to run front operations seeking to determine whether Iran was willing to deal in nuclear materials, a painstakingly slow, patient process of covert trustbuilding that would have been this administrations best hope of actually pinning Iran with solid evidence of "nuclear ambitions".

They shot themselves in the foot, now they're busy trying to claim Iran is in search of nukes? Duh. The operation was cancelled to the tune of millions because Cheney's rear was chapped about Wilson exposing a big lie.

But the truth did come out, and now the house of cards is crumbling. With this, Ann needs to stifle about squirmy Scooter getting his. No one cares if he's the one that outed Valerie Plame, the charge is lying to investigators. Did he lie or not? And Ann, is "misremember" a new euphemism that only applies to Republicans?

The reason we need to strictly enforce these laws people, is extremely important. If the Vice President's chief of staff was able to say anything he wanted without accountability, he might tell us that an Iraq had mobile weapons-making lab. It is precisely mis-truthy pearls like this that could get us into serious trouble!

Now don't be surprised that they are trying to get Libby and the others. It is not, as Ann insists, a liberal conspiracy to get Cheney for no good reason - he's been around for decades and no one bothered going after him until he started lying and covering up. So it's not personal, it's criminal.

The reason law enforcement is going after him now is because he misremembered that Iraq did NOT pose any threat to the U.S.A., misremembered that they did NOT have an active WMD program, and misremembered that Iraq had ties to al Qaeda. Those "mistakes made" are costing your unborn children trillions and have put thousands of brave U.S. troops in the ground. The problem is, it's now public that the intelligence agencies told the White House the evidence was NG before the fact. That means it's more then a "mistake", it's treason. But with Cheney making such liberal use of executive privilege, this is all they can prove so far. Baby steps....

You would think Cheney, if innocent, would want to clear his name, but no, he wants to keep everything in the dark. Let's look ahead then, to Jay Rockefeller's hearings and see how much is laid bare about who knew what and when. For my money, it's already bad enough when we have a Congressional Authorization to use Military Force that lists conditions that haven't been met.

All of the intel gatherers have cleared their names of malfeasance by providing documentation that they told the White House the evidence stunk. Bush said publicly that Iraq had no ties to 9-11 and as hard as Rick Santorum tries, no one has still come up with any WMD. So it's really not so much a matter of whether they lied or not, now it's more a matter of who was the ringleader, who just went along and how many years they should each be locked up.

But their greatest tool so far in maintaining the 1 in 5 Americans that approve of their handiwork has been the right wing spin machine, led by Limbaugh and Coulter who may not have anything material to defend Libby, but sure can devise ways to try to smear the Wilsons. It doesn't solve the proble, but it sure does ease the pain.

Then when she hits a pause at her keyboard, just rehash criticisms of Clinton. How about some fresh research Ann? Too cold to go out this winter? And speak up Conservatives - do you like her talking for you? I thought the movement was about fiscal responsibility and morality - why then are the prime movers in the GOP meth-smoking, cheating closeted gays and the worst spenders in history who have indebted us to the Chinese, Japanese and Saudis for generations?

Conservatives, get us off the yoke of the corrupt and the moneylenders!
