Do you feel the leaked information from a global warming alarmist organization is meaningful?

Conservatives are demanding that House Minority Leader John Boehner fill an empty slot on the House Appropriations Committee with a fiscal hawk rather than the National Republican Congressional Committee chairman who could use the position to hand out earmarks for political gain.

“House Leadership has said they are serious about earmark reform, said they are serious about cutting the pork and abuse; it’s time to put up or shut up and put Rep. Jeff Flake (R.-Ariz) on the committee,” said Erick Erickson, editor of RedState.com

When the House returns next week, Republican leadership must fill the vacant seat left on the appropriations committee left by Rep. Roger Wicker (R.-Miss) who was appointed to fill Trent Lott’s (R.-Miss.) Senate seat. According to January 7 Politico story, Boehner is likely to choose RSCC Chairman Rep. Tom Cole (R.-Okla.) to fill the position. “Cole argues the appropriations seat would help him raise money for the cash-strapped NRCC,” reported Patrick O’Conner.

The Club for Growth’s Director of Government Affairs Andy Roth said this strategy would backfire. “If they take a pass at Flake, then the base’s frustration will only continue. That means closed wallets and fewer voters come Election Day,” Roth said.

Flake has been the House’s most vocal critic against earmarks, often challenging pet projects on the floor late into the night to shame the members. Each week his office issues an “Egregrious Earmark of the Week” press release. The most recent, sent out on January 4, highlights a line-item for “dairy farm profitability in Pennsylvania” tucked into the Omnibus appropriations bill that will cost taxpayers $375,000.

FreedomWorks President Matt Kibbe pointed out that “Last year Flake’s staff even caught an earmark going directly to a lobbying firm.”

On January 8, Flake wrote a letter to Boehner asking to be put on the committee. “Wouldn’t it make sense to have at least one Republican member of the Appropriations Committee who doesn’t earmark?” Flake asked.

The fiery anti-tax advocate Grover Norquist said Flake shouldn’t just be a member of the committee, but that Flake should be at the helm of it. “If we absolutely must have an Appropriations Committee, Flake should be the ranking member,” Norquist said.

Erickson said his blog has taken an editorial position to support Flake and that he would be urging his list of over 100,000 friends and members to take action on the matter. “They should call their Republican congressman, or more appropriately call members of the Republican Steering committee,” he said.

The editors of the Wall Street Journal wrote on January 8 that it was unlikely Flake would be appointed, but that his candidacy represented an important test for House Leadership. “Mr. Flake could be counted on to police the worst excesses and be the taxpayer's advocate on one of Congress's most powerful committees,” the editors wrote. “This is why he's a long shot to get the job. But if he doesn't get it, we'll know House Republicans still haven't changed their ways from the Tom DeLay-Bridge to Nowhere era.

Dani Doane, director of U.S. House relations for the Heritage Foundation, was equally pessimistic. “Every turn they say they need to re-brand to take over and every decision they make seems to lead them right back to where they were,” she said.

Not Yours To Give
This needs to be the rallying cry for those who want to stop these earmarks, which are probably unconstitutional.
Google "Not Yours To Give" and/or cross reference it with David Crockett (Yes, thats the Davey Crockett of the Alamo) and read the story.

The money that our represenatives waste is not there's to give and we must get rid of those who do not realize this.

Remember the Alamo
Remember Goliad

"If Boehner DOES NOT appoint Flake, The NRCC will be able to tally their donations on their FINGERS!"

More like the fingers on one hand!

My Congress Critter
Jeff Flake is my Congressman, I'm Mormon and I was very unhappy with his stance on the Immigration bill. We do need Comprehensive reform and I am in favor of a "Guest Worker" program but only AFTER the fence is built and the border secured.

That said. Jeff Flake does need to be on the Approrations Committee to keep an eye on the stupid earmarks and and even dumber spending.

JEFF FLAKE NOT TO BE TRUSTED
Lets NOT forget the role Flake played in trying to push Amnesty through the House. He was highly supportive of the McCain/Kennedy/Bush Immigration bill and he enthusiastically opposed the electorate. If he'll oppose the electorate once, he'll do it again. The man is not to be trusted. He's a wolf in sheeps clothing. Darvin Dowdy

warning!
jeff flake is a mormon and we all know how they can't be trusted. this is obviously sarcasm for all you evangelicals that take this as an actually cue to start your typical ranting.

It's defense of the status quo
I get begging letters from Cole all the time, I return them with pithy comments and no $$$$. And I don't believe I am the only one so you'd think they'd get the message. Interesting that Cole believes by being on the committee it would generate income..how by bringing more and more pork home that the taxpayers cannot afford? In another world that would be called bribery. Boehner is a blue eyed phoney.. I'm so sick of these clowns, my wish and my prayer is a complete housecleaning and let the honorable ones
return via the vote. They have cheapened the
Republic, in fact they have put the Republic up for sale and our enemies are busily bidding on it. But not to worry, they scratch the backs of the special interests and vicey versey. Ya notice how they all refer to each other as "my friend"..yep, a den of thieves do make strange bedfellows.

National Security
As long as the Republicans ignore this issue - even their claims of national defense are suspect. After all, what kind of security are we talking about when we run up $4 trillion more in debt over the last seven years, and then sell that debt to countries like China, Japan, and Saudi Arabia, who then use that as leverage to pursue their own industrial, political and military interests at our expense? With $800 billion in our chits - and rising, just how long do we think we can keep waving the flag at China in Asia, before China uses that debt to replace us?

That debt is every bit as powerful as our aircraft carriers - yet we blindly keep running deficits and selling it to our greatest competitors - giving them significant power over our currency and our economy.

What kind of national defense is that?

One more reason
This is just one more reason why the Republican Party is in the state it now finds itself. Unfortunately, Flake will most likely not be appointed and it will be business as usual thus cementing the image that it has become a mirror image of the Dems except for National Defense.

Jeff Flake
Needs to be on this committee. Boehner has a chance here to gets some conservatives back in the loop. Unfortunately, I think they want Flake out. They'll keep pulling this type of thing with him until he goes away.

Flake co-sponsored leg. for amnesty
in the house, which is a HUGE spending issue.

The Crawfish
If Boehner DOES NOT appoint Flake, The NRCC will be able to tally their donations on their FINGERS!

We need
to get someone in there who will make it so that all bills come through the committee CLEAN! If it isn't a direct appropriation for the DoD, then it doesn't belong in the Defense Appropriations Bill! If it's unConstitutional spending, it doesn't belong in any bill coming through Congress in the first friggin' place!
