Poll
Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

The last Republican presidential debate before the January 3 Iowa caucus, hosted by the Des Moines Register, failed to generate any sparks between the candidates, frustrating event watchers.

Complaints about the debate that ranged from the selection of questions to the decision to allow long-shot presidential candidate Alan Keyes participate to its low-budget appearance.

Townhall editor Jonathan Garthwaite wrote, “Best moment of the debate: 3:17 when the debate ended.

Moderator Carolyn Washburn, editor of the Des Moines Register, opened the debate by telling the candidates she would not ask questions about Iraq or immigration because it they were not issues Iowans needed to know more about.

“We won’t talk a lot about issues like Iraq or immigration,” she said. “They’re important issues, no doubt, but Iowans say they know where the candidates are coming from on those.”

Instead of generating fiery exchanges between the candidates, Washburn got herself into a tangle with Fred Thompson. At one point, Washburn asked for a “show of hands” on whether or not the candidates believed “global climate change is a serious threat and caused by human activity.”

“I’m not doing handshows,” Thompson said.

She replied back “does that mean yes or no?”

“Are you going to give me a minute to answer that?” Thompson asked.

“No, I’m not,” Washburn said.

“Well, I’m not going to answer” Thompson said to scattered applause.

The debate lacked frills, as seen in the CNN/YouTube debate that featured user-generated questions submitted in videos or any high-profile media personalities like Anderson Cooper, and cast the candidates against a sparse black background. Some gritty interview footage was used to break up questions that the New York Times blogged “makes the candidates look like they are prisoners under interrogation.”

The debate will air again on CSPAN-3 Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. and the Des Moines Register will host a similar debate for Democratic presidential candidates tomorrow.

debate
Two of the most important questions were purposely left out, illegal immigration and the war. This leaves an excuse for not asking the democrat candidates their views on these subjects. The questions, by a liberal moderator of course, were anemic, fewer, more relevant questions with adequate response time would be more appropriate.

Bob
These debates are better then going to see the exhibits at the state fair. What they need to do is pick a range of subjects. 5 to 10 depending & debate one or two of these subjects at these debates. Same questions for Repubs & Dems.

The way they are now are a laugher & degrade the whole process.

Bob, a good suggestion.
__Same questions for both dems + repubs, same sequence, same allotted times to answer, or post a rebuttal. Same day, one right after the other. I liked the meter showing reaction, and that should be in all debates.

Bob
I don't know, Bob. I think watching the buttered cow may be more exciting than watching Carolyn Washburn ask questions.

TANCREDO VIDEO ON YOUTUBE
Has anyone seen Tom Tancredo's youtube spoof of the Univision debate Sunday? Check it out. It's pretty darn funny and really blasts the candidates for pandering to illegals.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n5GUCQAdlxg

Thompson stole the show
by refusing to give a Yes or No answer to a complex question. 30 or 60 seconds is not a long time to answer either, but at least it's an answer. Go FRED!

What was wrong?
Town Hallers hooted and hollered when they thought
that CNN's questions were too controversial.

I have been told that the Des Moines Register has
developed into a left-leaning newspaper unlike what
it used to be.

So if Washburn had decided to ask more colorful
questions, you wouldn't have like them anyway.

I long for a return to the days when the League of
Women Voters led the two or three debates of the
entire campaign. They were knowlegable, respectful, and non-biased.

outofthewoods
You may be right about questions involving the war and illegals. We will see if they ask the Dums about these topics. Kudos to Thompson for acting like a grown-up with the hand-raising. Ridiculous.

B-O-R-I-N-G!
Once when Stalin left the room after some meeting the attendees stood and applauded. Then a sudden realization gripped them, the first one to stop applauding would probably be arrested as a counterrevolutionary. They stayed on their feet for forty-five minutes clapping, until one man finally sat down in exhaustion (he was soon arrested).
The Republican candidates are in the same pickle. They know how stupid these debates are and you can feel how little enthusiasm they feel but they're afraid to stop. I think if one of the serious candidates (Mike,Mitt,Fred,Rudy) said,"enough!" nobody would care.

Lemonade
In the good old days the League of Women's Voters were, indeed, non-partisan. During WIllY's term they came out of the closet and have been full-bore Demo/Socialists. We just didn't know it before, now we do.

As far as the 'debate,' pretty useless. I say let Alan Keyes talk and debate, he is one of the few that has reasonably creative ideas, and can actually express them eloquently. Unlike some of the stumble-bumbs.

Alan Keyes
made a complete arse of himself. These debates have proven as pointless as this entire primary system. A 3rd party has never seemed so feasible.

We want to be entertained
That is basically what this article is saying. We want our entertainment. If you want sparks, why don't we hand each of them sword and let them go at each other in hand-to-hand combat.

We are choosing the next President of the United States not the next American Idol! Seriously, this kind of talk is infuriating to me.

Of course, perhaps I should be glad that people tuned out this debate. The frustrating thing to me is to see them all pandering to the Constitutional, limited government in an effort to steal these issues from the people who really mean it. I know some will say this is standard politics, but I am sick of standard politics. Alan Keyes was right in some of his attacks. The "front runners" are lying and pandering, saying exactly what we want to hear even if it contradicts their record in political service. The only two candidates who can even talk about adhering to the Constitution and limited government with a straight face are Tom Tancredo and Ron Paul. The others are all sold out to the Washington D.C. machine.

Don't allow the rhetoric to fool you. Examine the voting record and the political history of each of these candidates closely. Especially note where their current talk does not match up with their past walk. This will show you the character of the men before you. Then choose your candidate wisely.

Remember, the future of America rests on your vote.

Has anyone figured out
Why was Alan Keyes on the stage in the first place?
He didn't even meet the criteria set forth by the Des Moines Register for a candidate to be invited, ie. he has no campaign headquarters in Iowa, he didn't poll at 1%), heck he hadn't even appeared in a prior debate!
And why invite him then do your best to NOT ask him anything? Or treat him rudely and give him less time to answer than others etc.?

My theory is this (OK, I have the advantage of having a Liberal for a sister so I know how they think - sort of)...

The Lib moderator wanted to show the Libs who might have been tuned into PBS just how much the Republicans don't like black people.
Think about it...treat him like a 2nd class citizen during a Republican debate...the hardcore Lefties will blame the Republicans for the treatment Mr Keyes received NOT the Liberal editor of the Liberal newspaper on the Public/Liberal TV station.

Nice plan designed to convince their Dim-witted constituency that Republicans (Conservatives in particular) are intolerant SOBs.

Anybody else got an idea?

W/O=

Of course
Who's going to watch something at 1pm in on a Wednesday? Also the report I just heard on the news is that 70,000 residents in Des Moines are without power due to the Ice storm. Does anyone think they care about watching a debate?

Perhaps what we need is for
Townhall to set up a conservative debate. We know that anyone in the media is going to set up a "debate" that tries to amke all the Republicans look bad, particularly the ones who are conservative. That was no accident that they called out Fred on the AGW thread because he is the ONLY one of the top tier candidates who doesn't support the AGW scam. Iowans love this scam and the politicians ethonal based non-solution.

Yes we bother with this nonsense
during a weekday in the afternoon...most of us are at work, and in fact yesterday afternoon our downtown financial centre was suffering a Mass Panhandle by an organization known to be confrontational and violent; the price of gas went up 5 cents overnight; 25% of the population is doing its Christmas shopping in the USA and in our neighbourhood you will pay $250,000 for a 339 square foot condo; and we are supposed to be at home listening to this stuff?

Just how dumb do these people think we really are? (Incidentally, the Mass Panhandle found out yesterday that the answer to that question is *Not nearly as dumb as we figured.*)

Hurrah
On a day that was dark and gloomy, depression lurked in the corners of my mind. All was sad and soggy, muddy and ugly when out of the tube came a response from Fred Thompson that literally lifted me from the depths. It made my day. Somebody up there had the intestinal fortitude to say "enough". Too bad they can't all afford to say it like it is.

Narrator
Did you see that debacle.

The lady was asking them Questions and then not letting them answer. I think this was a DEM set-up for another of their Dog and Pony shows.

If we the REPS dont start having our own debates we will never have our points heard. Why do these Candidates always believe they have to COLLOR up with the LIBERALS. The LIBS sure as hell want go to any Conservative Debates so why do we go to theirs. Oh Im sorry there is no conservative Networks to a LIB it is all ran by their DRIVE BY MEDIA.

sans pareil
While I admit it was somewhat strange to have Alan Keyes suddenly reappear, they stated at the beginning of the show that he DID qualify. He DID have 1% of the polls in Iowa and a full-time office in the state. He also WAS present in a previous debate: the All American Presidential Forum (aka the black/hispanic debate).

http://www.pbs.org/kcet/tavissmiley/special/forums/

It was the most fair forum to date, and they actually asked interesting questions. Every candidate was given equal time to respond to each question. If only all of the other forums and debates were held this way, the affair might actually be informative and beneficial to the viewers. Sadly, none of the "front-runners" bothered to show up to the debate (Ron Paul and Mike Huckabee did). Once again, the Republican party snubbed the black vote, and we wonder why they don't typically vote Republican.

DEBATE AWARDS

...Most polished and Presidental: Mitt Romney ..

...Most improved performance: Fred Thompson ..

...Most disappointing: TIE Rudy & Huck ...

...Wingnut award: TIE Paul & Keyes ...

...Most insipid: John McCain ...

...Most forgetable: TIE Tancredo & Hunter ...

.....Sixty second sound bytes is not a debate ...it is a game of quips and gotcha ...

.....Luntz's focus group selected Romney as the winner ...but I thought some of his answers were pre-packaged PC ...his answer for how to improve education was to increase the pay of good teachers and get rid of poor teachers ...this is pure pap ...he did not explain how he was going to get that plan past the NEA ...Thompson's answer was that the NEA was the main problem that education was so poor ...

.....I thought that the debate helped Romney but that Thompson gave the best and most logical answers ...

.....I predict that Hucabee has peaked and that Romney and Thompson's numbers will go up in Iowa ...if Thompson can finish a strong third in Iowa and then do well in SC he will still have a longshot chance to either pick up the nomination or to be offered the VP slot .....COLOSSUS

"I long for a return to the days when the League of Women Voters led the two or three debates of the entire campaign. They were knowlegable, respectful, and non-biased."

Congratulations, Lemonade...you've just confirmed the existence of life on other planets.

Just out of curiousity, though...which planet are you from, exactly?

All the League of Women Voters debates I've seen were quite thoroughly biased, and didn't come across as particularly knowledgeable either.

I believe
there is a conserted effort on the part of democrat friendly media to keep real republican issues away from the people. These issues are immigration, taxes and the Iraq war and the democrat role in its defeat.

WHY
Hers a Question I would like for them to ASK. Why do you think that everytime the NYTIMES leaks out our INTEL of how we are monitoring, keeping tabs on their MONEY, securing the U.S. from TERROIST that the DEM Candidates always agrees with the NYTIMES?

Why even after we have used waterboarding to save AMERICAN LIVES the DEM candidates always seem to be on the TERRORIST side and want us to staop. Could it be they dont care about AMERICA or they are just saying things to be POLITICAL.

How do you expect to win the WAR ON TERROR when people of your own DEM LED CONGRESS is always taking the side of the ENEMY(DEMS).

Now thats some of the question I want to know.

A Good Debate
Although the moderator was a dud, this debate was very revealing for Romney and Huck. Romney's articulate and reassuring responses revealed his presidential qualities. He was very impressive.

More interesting to me was Huck's "equality" statement during the debate. "No one should have access to better medical care or better education because of wealth." That comes right out of the communist manifesto. This statement combined with his liberal record on immigration and release of prisoners (including murderers and rapists) reveal what a big government liberal he really is.

Conservative commentators should be all over his socialist statement in this debate for the rest of the election cycle.

Idea!
Let Mary Matalin and James Carville moderate a debate for both parties!

Debate...yea right.
This woman was so laughably unprofessional, I am surprised nobody walked off stage. Fifteen seconds to answer silly ambiguous questions? The whole thing was a joke.

Ban Debates Already
Can any of you sheeple please explain the necessity of debates? They've become a pointless waste of time on both sides and even the novelty of My Space and You Tube debates has worn thin. We sheeple stupidly tune in and hope the guy/gal we're rooting for delivers the killer knock out blow that sends his/her opponents ducking for cover. But it just isn't gonna happen, so why bother. Now all you get is the same canned talking points over and over again ad nauseum.

Look if debates really meant something than Al Gore would be finishing his second term or John Kerry would be running for re-election. Only the Kennedy/Nixon Debates had any real meaning--Kennedy wins the White House because of Nixon's hyperactive sweat glands. Enough already.

Question
The "Have you stopped beating your wife, yes or no" question was beyond belief. Did she actually not recognize the nature of the question? There were 3 possible answers to that compound question - and 1 possible nonsense answer. Don't people use logic anymore?

Brovo to Thompson for his non-answer.

Other Dubious Debate Remembered
Here's another why debates should be forever banned--they're all biased, stupid and completely counterproductive to the political process. Here are a few memorable lowpoints in presidential debate history:

Nixon sweating uncontrollably during his debate with Kennedy. Enough said.

Michael Dukakis's absurd response to that totally unfair question about what he would do if his wife was hypothetically raped and murdered.

Vice President Bush's patronizing attitude toward Geraldine Ferraro. I suspect he was insulted at having to debate a woman.

Bush 41 glancing down at his wristwatch during one of his debates with Clinton.

Gore's sighing and eye-rolling during a debate with Dubya.

Gerald Ford declaring that Eastern Europe was not under Soviet domination in a debate with Jimmy Carter.

So tell me again, sheeple, what do debates really accomplish??????

A man

WITHOUT CONVICTION OR CLARITY ON PUBLIC POLICY OR HOW HIS FAITH INFLUENCES HIS POLICY IS UNELECTABLE IN A GENERAL ELECTION......and this was kerry when the media was in love with him, Imagine Romney as a republican trying to make the case for his unclear record and lack of honesty that his religion will influence his policy making (don't bother telling people it won't, because americans are more intelligent than that!). 1992 a Clinton presidency determined by 43% of the voters - De ja Vu!! Republicans please think, think, and think past the designer suits, business accomplishments and family pictures of Romney .... he is unpredictable as a president - THINK ALREADY!!!

A SIMPLE "no or no" question
I love how Thompson the lawyer gets plaudits for refusing to answer a very simple question, easily answerable with a monosyllabic "NO".

Remember when it was weasely politicians who refused to answer simple questions? Remember when it was a sign of their weaseliness that they refused to answer simple yes-or-no questions "yes" or "no".

" on whether or not the candidates believed “global climate change is a serious threat and caused by human activity.”

Parse the above question: the answer is easily and obviously "NO".

looking at it as a program, AND connects the two phrases. Only if the first AND the second phrases are true is the answer "YES", otherwise the answer is "NO".

Hey jdw...
These are presidential debates. This is not a game show where the candidates should be expected to slap a buzzer and spit out quick news-byte ready answers. If you dont have the time to listen to a candidate carefully explain his position on a widely debated topic, I suggest you go play a video game. But don't expect the rest of us to adapt to your short attention span.

Face it. Huckabee wins the Nomination!
ROMENY has run out of gas. He has been the worst investment money could buy. His persecution complex make him so defensive that he cracks under pressure. BOTH Romney's and Giuliani's flop flip past makes them a liability and not an asset for republicans 2008.

Mike Huckabee is presidential material and is alone able to defeat Hillary & Obama. I am now convinced that those wealthier donors to Romney's, Giuliani’s, and Thompson's campaign have wasted their money and if they continue, are wasting their hard earned money on candidates who do not have voter appeal or substance. As a member of the younger generation, I will tell you point blank, Romney, Giuliani, and Thompson DO NOT connect with us.
