Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Democratic Majority Whip Sen. Dick Durbin (Ill.) failed in his attempt to push forth legislation to give green cards to illegal aliens who attend college Wednesday.

Durbin, who has tried several times to pass the DREAM Act over the last five years, was handed another defeat when he fell eight votes short of the 60 needed to proceed with the bill.

The Senate has already rejected the bill three times this year as a part of comprehensive immigration reform proposals. The measure would provide green cards to illegal aliens under the age of 30 who have lived in the United States for five years and are enrolled in college or have served in the “uniformed services” for two years. “Uniformed services” applies to organizations like the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration as well as the military.

As written, the DREAM Act does not include any language to enhance national security and would, according to the Migration Policy Institute, make at least 1.3 million illegal aliens eligible for green cards.

Other estimates, using data from the 2007 Census Bureau, predict up to 4.4 million undocumented persons could obtain green cards under this law.

Republican Sen. Jim DeMint’s (S.C.) spokesman Wesley Denton said in a phone interview, “the crazy thing is, the reason the Senate rejected [previous] immigration reform bills is that they contained amnesty. Now, the Democrats are trying to push amnesty alone without any enforcement measures.”

To ramp up support for the bill, Durbin held a press conference on Capitol Hill Tuesday afternoon with two illegal alien college students and one who had obtained permanent legal status.

In retaliation, GOP presidential candidate Rep. Tom Tancredo (Colo.), who campaigns aggressively on border enforcement, asked Capitol Police and immigration officials to arrest the undocumented students. “Just because these illegal aliens are being used for political gain doesn't mean they get immunity from the law," Tancredo said in a statement. "If we can't enforce our laws inside the building where American laws are made, where can we enforce them?"

Officials declined to take action against the students.

Brian Darling, director of Senate relations for Heritage, said Durbin’s press event was a part of the Democrats’ larger strategy to “play the kid card.” He likened it to the decision made last month by Democratic leadership to use 12-year old Graeme Frost in their standoff with President Bush over expansion of the State Children’s Health Insurance Program.

Several Republicans complained that Democrats called the bill for a vote with little notice. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D.-Nev.) filed a motion to proceed with the bill late Monday evening. Less than 48 hours later, it was called for a vote.

Republican presidential candidate Fred Thompson, who unveiled his formal immigration plan Tuesday, seized on this opportunity to criticize Democrats. His campaign issued a statement that said: "Apparently our Democratic friends in Congress have learned a thing or two from the ‘coyotes,’ because just when we’d thought we’d sent the illegal-immigrant amnesty bill packing (at least for this year), Congress has ignored the public’s wishes and is trying to sneak what amounts to another amnesty bill through."

In addition to the legislation’s two Republican co-sponsors--Sens. Chuck Hagel (Neb.) and Richard Lugar (Ind.)-- nine GOP senators voted to support the DREAM Act. They were: Sen. Bob Bennett (Utah.), Sen. Sam Brownback (Kans.), Sen. Susan Collins (Maine), Sen. Larry Craig (Idaho), Sen. Orrin Hatch (Utah), Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (Tex.), Sen. Trent Lott (Miss.), Sen. Mel Martinez (Fla.) and Sen. Olympia Snowe (Maine.).

I just want ILLEGALS to get in line back in Mexico or Arabia... I did not say that I would welcome them back here! ;~)

I went on to note that today's America must only allow EDUCATED, skilled immigrants (NOT the ignorant, indigent, and willfully culturally disparate). Heritage notes with careful study that the educated pay for themselves while the ignorant cost us in myriad ways, including as huge net users of govt. services. (see video upper right at first link)... a household headed by an ignorant, indigent ILLEGAL will cost us $1.4 million per household in a lifetime.

Recall
I'm sure California has recall rights of Officials that don't do what they want, I don't know about other States, but I bet some of them do. As long as elected officials have no fear of being kicked out of office they'll continue to do as they please. Maybe it's time the Constituents paid a visit to some of them at their offices, maybe a face to face confrontation would put some sense in them.
I now understand that kay Bailey Hutchinson is going to run for Governor of Texas, maybe that's why she voted for the Dream Act, thinks she'll get the illegals vote, and don't think for a minute the Scummers don't vote, why else would our ballots be in Mexican? Our Country is going to hell in a hand basket and with the exception of a few no one seems to give a damn.

A 30 yr. old is not a KID,ok. Illegal aliens are not all Mexicans.

Acculturate? Let's see, they can study here to be crop dusters, jet pilots, or hey how about a member of Congress.

America is sliding down
Vicious opponents of immigration, as plenty are here, push the prosperity of our country down to the gutter.

The Freedom of Migration Act is the only solution that makes sense.

Yes, Lilly
You are correct that, "It's not his fault that his parents brought him here illegally." It's not my fault, either.

Your argument is incomplete unless you explain how his parents illegal act lays an obligation upon ME. If you came back from a trip to find a family of squatters living in your home would you evict only the adults?

not ashamed to be right
the bleeding hearts think we lack compassion for immigrants. But as a sovereign nation we have the legal right to determine who we should invite to legally enter this country. The libs still believe we should allow them to increase their voting base and if allowed will welcome puerto rico with open arms as that will give them two extra votes in the senate. The dims have yet to rationally explain why illegals should be pushed to front of the line over legal immigrants and why they are entitled to benefits not available to us citizens.

wildwest, it is worth
mentioning (to suzerose)the +50% Hispanic drop out rate (legal and illegal)along with Hispanic teen and single mom pregnancy statistics (also legal and illegal.) Colorado recently passed a law that does not allow kids to drop out until 17 (previously 16)so now the "do gooders" (liberals who sponsored the legislation)can feel good about nothing other than forcing bodies to be present while minds are absent. I won't get into the aspects of vocational ed. vs. college prep education here, but I do think that increasing voc. ed classes would be better than a new law forcing kids to stay in school one year longer.

A couple posters mentioned the numbersusa.com site, which is excellent! It IS important to contact ALL the treasonous legislators (Republican/Democrat/Independent) who are trying to cram amnesty down our throats. I just tell their staff that I am a legal American citizen, and amnesty has NOTHING to do with congressional districts since +70% of America opposes it! Why these Washington elites don't get it YET is mind boggling, but no surprise given how detached they are from the American populace (helped by constituents who do not voice opinions for whatever reason.)

Trent Lott
Not only is Trent Lott a "putz" as one poster said, he is also a TURNCOAT. He needs to be voted out of office and replaced with someone that is loyal to the desires of his constituents.

Amen Sammy
We need to return to pre-1965 levels of around 250,000 a year. Something survivable.

Lodestar
Lodestar, I have to disagree with you on one important point, "We need to seal the border, enforce existing laws, and let ILLEGALS repatriate and get in line properly." I don't want them in any line. If they were to do as you say and return here legally at some later date they are still desperately poor, English-challenged, and lacking in skills. As a legal immigrant these very same people would probably actually cost us a lot more than they do illegally. Amnesty essentially does the same (turns an illegal into a legal) only much faster. Whether fast or slow, legal or illegal I don't want them here.

We have to get past this notion that anyone desiring to come to America can eventually do so as long as they follow procedure. We don't need and don't want everyone that wants to come here. Legal immigration should be at the behest of American citizens and something that is only done to benefit American citizens. Personally, I think we need a major immigration time-out after decades of completely irrational schizophrenic immigration growth (legal and illegal).

We have over 300 million citizens in this country. How much is enough? This isn't 1880 when we had a huge interior that needed to be populated, developed, and secured.

contacting Congress
Folks--

Contact your Senators easily right here... bookmark it and get involved to save YOUR country! They love hearing from you! Heck, contact all of them-- Jeff Sessions is not our Senator, but he is a great American!

***********************************************
Dear Senator Sessions:

Thank you for your "No" vote on the Dream Act scamnesty ploy. You are a genuine American hero on this CRITICAL issue of ILLEGAL aliens. We do NOT need under ANY circumstances to be rewarding those here ILLEGALLY with a path to citizenship. We need to seal the border, enforce existing laws, and let ILLEGALS repatriate and get in line properly.

Fully 72% of Americans believe in these goals, notwithstanding the disingenuous tripe proffered by the media and the monied, self-aggrandizing special interest groups on the other side. America NEEDS immigrants, BUT they should be LEGAL and primarily EDUCATED AND SKILLED. Today's America CANNOT AFFORD the flood of ILLEGAL, uneducated, indigent border crashers and visa violators. We would soon devolve into a third world welfare state-- like these wretched people are trying to escape from.

fanatic opponents
This FANATIC OPPONENT must correct you. We want those ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS deported. Tell ya what, since you seem to be in love with them why dont you spend your personal money and provide them healthcare, food, housing and education. This FANATIC OPPONENT is sick and tired of them and you bleeding heart A@@holes

Defeat of decency and common sense
Killing the Dream Act proves one more time that common sense is not so common.

We have these young people among us. We educated them. Despite their foreign origin, they are Americans by heart, by spirit, and by culture.

Fanatic opponents of immigration would like to have these young Americans deported, and create in the process a few more million of people around the world hating America. Then they would increase limits for H1B visas for immigrants form other countries.

As someone said once, whatever America does it is big size, including stupidity.

The Freedom of Migration Act proposal offers a simple solution.

sammy
it would appear that we need some natl party money headed idaho way to find a replacement for old tapping toes craig. It seems that he is just another sellout who is on board to betray america's values. But at least he was responsible for fixing the stalls at the airport.

On Deck
Senator "Wide Stance" Craig is next up in the amnesty lineup with an agricultural workers amnesty bill that he is sponsoring. These guys never quit.

Rino's and the Dream Act.
RINO's in the Senate Bob Bennett, Sam Brownback, Susan Collins, Sen. Larry Craig, Sen. Orrin Hatch, Kay Bailey Hutchison, Sen. Trent Lott, Mel Martinez , Olympia Snowe. I'm not a betting man, but if I were, I'd wager that less than half of these Senators will ever see elected office again. Hagel already bailed as he realizes that he had only two chances at being re-elected, slim and none. KBH has already announced her intentions not to run again, and any discussion of her as VP or Governor, well thats just crazy talk. Brownback's prospects are as moribund as his misguided presidential bid. Lugar is too old and too out of touch with reality. Lott doesn't look so hot, Bennett will be gone with Bush, Toe tapper Larry, self explanatory, but this was his parting shot at sticking his thumb in the eye of real conservatives. Orrin Hatch might be able to stick, but I'm thinking the people of Utah have had enough. Mel has no chance at another turn, besides he'll make a killing in real estate and lobbying for LaRaza. Olympia might also stay provided true conservative don't vote in any substantial numbers. Voters are justified in making examples of all these Senate members!

reply to buc and all
Folks, do NOT underestimate how influential your calls and e-mails to Congress can be. While it is true that the monied lobbyists and inside the beltway power brokers wield the most influence, even the pro-ILLEGAL forces admit that it was (righteously indignant) Middle America pounding out those calls and e-mails which has derailed Scamnesty thus far despite the immense special interest $ trying to cram it thru.

Great American Sen. Sessions and others have noted that the Senators had never seen anything like the wrath this Scamnesty stuff caused in Middle America. Here is how you can contact YOUR Senators and Reps at their official contact sites-- it is easy! Bookmark it and call/e-mail them often:

Stop messing around...
with green cards, amnesty, and driver's licenses already, Democrats, and give the illegal immigrant what you REALLY want to: their very own Voter Registration Card. But some may vote Republican so you could require as a "Pathway to Citizenship", a vote of DEMOCRAT... then *bing*... you're a "citizen"! But seriously: I heard illegal immigration is the result of global warming caused by the decomposing bodies of the 100's and 1,000's of innocent citizens killed daily from waterboarding in a secret CIA prison in Habeus Corpus by authority of the BUSH/CHENEY Regime.

This is a good thing
The Dems just keep putting their foot in their mouth. They completely misread the American public. THey are so consumed with socialist, and secular ideaolgy that they have accomplished nothing since taking control of congress. What have they done constructive since they took control of both houses? They spend each day wasting time blaming everying that happens on George Bush or some talk show host, even global warming. Its just nuts, how in the world do these idiots get elected to office. Send them packing. Reid, Pelosi,Boxer, Durbin, Kennedy, Byrd, and all the rest need to be sent home for good. The American public has spoken, we want our borders closed to illegals, we want our taxes lowered, we want support for our military, we want spending for pork stopped, and WE DO NOT WANT AMNESTY FOR ANYONE HERE WHO DID NOT COME IN THE LEGAL MANNER. PERIOD

reply to : Reaganite
You asked where were the articles on TH opposing the "Dream Act" before Dingy Harry Reid forced it up for a vote. The truth is that the agenda of TH is primarily neoCON driven. Rudy is popular here (even though he embraces ILLEGALS) becuase he cannot wait to duke it out with Iran (as well as make a mess in Iraq). He has the same ilk of globalist, neoCON advisers as Presidente Jorge.

The CBO projects the cost of debt for the Iraq war to EACH American to be $8,000 for a total of $2.4 TRILLION... and we have simply destabilized the region. Think about it-- only Pat Buchanan is printed here of the Paleocon/America First school... they brand Ron Paul and other Constitutional originalists as nut cases because they simply suggest that we remember the principles on which the Founders established America. those guys would be astonished at this neoCON PNAC agenda.

They send emails when bills like this or others are comming up and ask you to call, fax or email senators / congressmen that are on the wrong side of the issue.

I know my emails to Turbin Durbin probalby do no good but I still want him to know people disagree with him.

I call and email other senators as well. Even if I am not in their district I want their phones to light up and hear what the people think.

People please pay attention and then act - we can make a difference!

suzerose
the average illegal has a 7th grade education and lacks much in the way of real work skills. Exactly how does stealing across the border from the third world toliet to our south prepare any of these illegals to enter a technologically advanced society. Libs and the pc multi-culturalism does emphasize assimilating into our society. There is a strong reluctance for these illegals to learn to speak engl;ish but doesn't stop them from invading our hospitals and schools to steal free services that libs have told them they have a right to. Libs and illegals have no respect for the rule of law and think we should welcome these illegals with open arms and let them steal our wealth and services which they haven't contributed to.

Better late than never
Where were the articles on this issue on Townhall BEFORE the vote?

Dream Act
It makes no sense-- Republicans are so afraid of everything they seem incapable to move forward on ANYTHING despite the issue making every sense in the world. Afraid of being overrun or 'invaded' by Mexican high schoolers, afraid of being invaded by muslims who have niether an organized army or navy.
Your fear is paralysing your very common sense. Passing the dream act would have made it poossible for hundreds of thousands of KIDS to acculturate into society, the oppisite effect will be to keep these 'mexican invaders' in low paying jobs and more likely into crime and social services.
Republicans by their fear are making things worse for the future of our country by their consistant blocking of ANY progress on ANY issue.

Sorry, Bill, we're keeping Jeff Sessions
Bill writes: Thursday, October, 25, 2007 9:37 AM
Let's Make a Deal!
To the good people of Alabama: How about trading Jeff Sessions for Nelson and Martinez? I think many of us Floridians would even kick in a few bucks to sweeten the deal!

We are so proud of him....and have written him to tell him so.

They never give up
One more time the Liberals have attempted to push some form of amnesty down the Country's throat. Classic difference between a Conservative & a liberal; A conservative has a position, a liberal dose not & will continue repackaging an idea to sell it, sort of like the used car salesman can't take no for an answer.

Bill
I understand your sentiments, but unfortunately we are ALL stuck with Martinez as a country. His horrible votes hurt all of us just about as much as they hurt Floridians.

By the way, How much do you want to be that Huckabee would have voted for this if he were in the Senate?

words..
Just thought I would point out a factoid. The derogatory word 'ni&&er' is a slang derivative of the Spanish word for Black; i. e. Negro, which was the original European word to describe the darkish brown, black skinned Africans who were caught, imprisoned, transported, and sold into slavery in the Western Hemisphere. First by the Spanish to harvest crops on the West Indies and Caribbean coastal South America. Then the practice was taken up and expanded by the English and their North American colonists, the Spanish word Negro surviving the transfer. After the Hispanics take majority in the U.S. and most especially if this is aided by an un- assimiltated underclass of poor illegal aliens of Hispanic descent, this word will have a revival, in all its derogatory connotations. I know this may sound as though I am playing the 'race' card, but it will happen. When the new Hispanic majority takes over they will identify with the previous ruling class (whites in general), and Blacks will be relegated to permanent minority 11% status. American Blacks with the help of Christian whites have fought hard for equality and in many ways attained that goal, rampant illegal immigration jeopardizes all those gains as well as the entire culture of equality based upon British and American heritage.

Good riddance!
Good riddance to the "DREAM ACT" that's actually a "NIGHTMARE" for Americans!

http://osi-speaks.blogspot.com/2007/10/dream-act-becomes-ni ghtmare-for.html#links

WE Won!
We the people won another battle against amnesty. I cannot count the number of hours I have spent calling senators or faxing or emailing over this immigration issue. And to see both of my Florida senators vote yes is very dispiriting. I won't be voting for them. It really irks me that the Congress will not listen to the American people so that all these immigration bills are squeakers. Keep calling the senators. Don't just call your own. I call the presidential candidates from both parties and all the Republican senators, and chastize them to get on the right side of this issue. I was shocked with Orrin Hatch's intern started arguing with me that DREAM is not amnesty. She then asked if I lived in Utah. I said no, but as a registered Republican I have already told the RNC that I will not donate money until Repubs stop voting for amnesty and BUILD THE DAMN FENCE!

Its Time to Dump These RHINO's
Its time for some tough primary challenges to these amnesty RHINO's. Get out there and publically call them traitors, criminals and useful idiots.

They really don't understand that amnesty would make the Republican party the minority party for 20-30 years.

why Congress ignores the vox populi
I saw the great American Sen. Jeff Sessions interviewed about the demise of the Dream Act. He was asked how Congress could be so tone deaf to the CLEAR will of a substantial majority (72%) of Americans about stopping ILLEGALS.

Sen. Sessions said that Senators think they care more than Middle America; that they know what is best for us. This is supercilious hubris at its remote elitist worst! We need to throw the bums like Trent Nottalot, Juan McQuisling and Linseed Gramnesty out of office! And Sanctuary City Rudy is verboten too!

The Senators who continue
voting to give OUR COUNTRY to ILLEGAL ALIEN INVADERS are violating their OATHS OF OFFICE. They DO NOT care one whit about American citizens. POWER and GREED IS THEIR MOTTO. The Senator who who knew of these types of people writes,
"A nation can survive its fools and even the ambitious, but it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is formidable, for he is known and carries his banners openly against the city, but the traitor moves among those within the gates freely, his sly whispers rustling through the alley and heard in the very halls of government itself. He rots the soul of a nation; he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city; he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist."
Cicero

Re "Breaking the law doesn't expire after a term of years": neither does the requirement to pay taxes. How in the world did you come up with this statement , "You no longer pay taxes"? Of course the elderly pay taxes. I pay a hefty federal and state income tax bill every year as well as staggering property tax, not to mention a long list of sales and service taxes. What are you talking about?

I am unfortunate enough to have Turbin Durbin as my senator who cannot listen to reason. I hope that others are smart enough to not reelect him in 2008

McCain voted an on another bill an hour before the dream act vote and somehow was not available to vote on the dream act - why not??

Rudy is talking the talk on ILLEGAL immigration but his past actions do not back him up.

I hope we get someone more anti ILLEGAL immigration to win the Repub nomination but whoever the rebubs put up has to be supported.

Clinton as pres with Pelosi and Reid in the House and Senate - look out!

Politicians are like diapers - they need to be changed often and for the same reason!

Let's Make a Deal!
To the good people of Alabama: How about trading Jeff Sessions for Nelson and Martinez? I think many of us Floridians would even kick in a few bucks to sweeten the deal!

No Means "NO"
Have you ever met a child that was doing something wrong and was told "no" but went ahead and done it anyway behind your back?

What type of child would purposely ignore those who take care of him ? A Spoilt brat!!

The news media has swept too much of the Democrats misdeeds under the rug to the point of actually making them arrogant and self important.

They know that they won't be questioned by the "old media" and have very little respect for the "new media" who is their only threat from absolute control.

Very, very stupid little brats!

I just wrote my Reps
I just wrote my congressman and senators and said NO.

WHY ARE DOES ALL immigration legislation seemingly appear to POP-UP out of no where with little or no debate? Piecemeal approach is BS.

I feel bad for these young illegal kids that came here with their illegal parents and missed the Reagan's 1982 amnesty.

BUT THEY ARE illegal. Some do have the YOU OWE ME, where are my PAPERS attitude, but than most 20 somethings feel a sense of entitlement regardless of citizen status.

We need to enforce existing laws first. Stop begging illegals to come out and giving them perks. Tell illegals to register, let them apply, no promise or implied path citizenship. Don't register get deported 100% for sure.

I found this site: "Collation of Students Activist", SoSA. It should be called coalition of foreign student activist. The CoSA feel they deserve to attend USA colleges and and are entitled to citizenship. Basically WHERE ARE MY PAPAERS.

I feel bad for them. Yes of the illegals, young and educated, USA raised sounds good BUT THEY ARE Illegal!! It does not matter if its their fault. LIFE SUCKS, YOU PAY TAXES, YOU GET OLD and DIE.

Australia actively seeks immigrants from all over the world and accepts them based on WHO IS THE BEST FIT to the countries needs, not who could sneak into the country illegally.

Illegals need to compete with other immigrants. Why not offer this DREAM BILL to ALL 18 to 24 year old's, world wide. We take the BEST, not the ones whose parents broke laws.

THE IDEA WE OWE THEM, NEEDS TO STOP. They can always go back to their country of origin and make it a better place for their fellow country men. The idea we might be kicking out brilliant people is really a stretch.

Nine Republicans for the Ash Heap of His
Voters, develop a long memory and vote these people out of the Senate. Vote them down in a Primary is preferred, but at least a Democrat is preferable to these decitful Republicans. This is nothing more than an amnesty bill.

Congratulations to the 11 Democrats who voted in a bipartisan manner to vote this abomination down.

is Fred serious about ILLEGALS?
Sanctuary City Rudy is saying that Fred T. voted against anti-ILLEGAL measures while in the Senate-- is this true? It is amusing to watch these open borders/globalist RINOS (amigo Rudy, Sen. Juan McQuisling) try to pretend to be pro-enforcement now that > 70% of America wants to stop and reverse the ILLEGAL invasion and pernicious permeation of America.

http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/cur rent_events/immigration/immigration_bill_failure_proves_ras mussen_s_first_law_of_politics

But these pigs are just donning lipstick-- their strings are pulled by the ILLEGAL employer lobby, just as the left's are pulled by the allure of welfare state govt. voters. This B/S about "conservative social values" is ridiculous-- uneducated, indigent ILLEGALS will vote like lemmings for the left... and Shrillary, et al KNOW this.

the insidious threat of ILLEGALS
It will be irrelevant if we prevail over the hostile Islamics but lose our heritage, culture, and socio-economic well-being to the ILLEGAL alien invasion/Reconquista. The threat is pernicious and the stakes are critical. ILLEGALS are NOT cheap labor-- their all-in costs are staggering. (see research below) The left KNOWS they will vote for big entitlement govt., which will become permanent. The RINOS (e.g., Presidente Jorge Bush and Sanctuary City Rudy) are so myopic that they foolishly imagine they can win some of the ILLEGALS' vote due to their alleged conservative social values. What is
"conservative" about rampant illegitimacy, identity fraud, welfare cheating, tax dodging, and gang, drug, ghetto and crime permeation?!

Fred's timing on Illegal Immigration
Fred's timing on Illegal Immigration is perfect, I think he will start to pull away from the pack....go Fred go....hammer time!

the REAL "Nightmare Act" agenda
The left tried to sneak the "Dream Act" by precisely because it was the most innocuous-sounding ploy toward Scamnesty for all-- a first step down slouching toward Gomorrah; a couple of leading 'Crats unwittingly admitted as much. Why do they want amnesty? They care little about cheap labor, BUT they KNOW that ILLEGALS will become voters for big entitlement govt., which in turn assures the hegemony of the liberal "elites" like Shrillary. [We should not confuse the "conservative values" of many Hispanic Americans with wants/goals of ILLEGALS.]

As Barney Fife said, we needed to nip this in the bud! Furthermore, we must demonstrate in the next election that we will throw out the bums who have embraced ILLEGALS. Today's America can ONLY BENEFIT on balance from educated, skilled immigrants who come here LEGALLY. ILLEGALS do NOT CONSTITUTE CHEAP LABOR; their all-in costs to us socio-economically are EGREGIOUS. We need to build the damm wall and enforce EXISTING laws, and they will repatriate attritively. [See how to join the fight just below.]

Katy,
you are so right, Martinez must go next time around.

let's see they have to prove....
they have been in the USA for 5 years and that they came before they were 16 years old. How does one prove that if they came here illegally, there is no trail to prove where they have been or what they have done, which goes to having good moral character, another so-called requirement.

As a parent I would not have put my children in such a predicament. There are, or should be consequences for illegal behavior. If they want to actually come to America to be Americans they would do it legally.

America's back door needs to the shut and securely locked so that immigrants who want to come here legally understand that we respect our laws and so should they.

Lilly misses the point
Was the Google creator here illegally? No. He followed the process and did it legally.

I work with a lady from Argentia who gets very angry whenever our local Hispanic folk gather and "say I have a right to be here!" because many of them are here illegally. She followed the INS process and has her green card.

If there is a problem with the green card process and the path to citizenship, then fix or replace that system, beef it up.

Please don't give those who knowingly break the law by coming here without following the proper process a free pass. Doesn't a free pass convey the message that "It isn't illegal if you don't get caught"? What kind of a foundation for citizenship does that convey?

Let them be legal...
...Or let them go home. If entered one of their countries illegally, I would be jailed.

Illegal is Illegal
This is the same argument that is made here in Kanukistan to justify forcible removal of earnings from childless people to be handed over to those who produce nothing but children -- that it is not the childs fault his parents are shiftless, worthless, unproductive parasites, jail birds or criminals.

My answer to both the DREAMers and the Kanukistanis is the same: those children are certainly not to blame, so they should be removed from their criminally irresponsible parents and handed over to responsible people who can and will look after them properly. In the case of illegal alien children, they and their illegal parents should be promptly deported whence they came, and the children should be told that lawbreaking is wrong regardless of your age when you do it.

The really big problem with the whole DREAM scheme is that it rests only on the affirmation by the illegal *CHILD* that he has been here at least five years and his parents brought him against his will. A *CHILD* old enough for university was, then, brought here illegally at a minimum at age 13 -- clearly old enough to understand the term ILLEGAL -- and if he was brought here earlier than that, he has lived here long enough to have absorbed the meaning of that word. If he has not, he is too ignorant to attend university anyway.

In any case, the answer to those who say it is not the childs fault that his parents are worthless criminals is to take the child away from those people and allow him to be reared by people who know which end the diaper goes on.

lilly
we don't need 80 year old plus sniors like you telling us how tax dollars should be spent. You no longer pay taxes but still insist that youknow how the treasuiry should be spent. These parasites from other lands invade our shore and steal our financial resources with little in actual contributions tgo our overall prosperity. Economists estimate that illegals take 2 plus dollars for every dollar they contribute to society. The overall estimate is that illega;s contributre effectively $20,000 but take $40,000 in various goods and services. Exactly how does that transfer in any way to the good of our nation. But those of you on the left continue to insist we should welcome them with open arms irrespective of the costs to society and in many cases give them priority over those who have followed the rules to enter legally. Breaking the law doesn't expire after a term of years.

DREAM Act
The description of the DREAM act given in this article is not entirely accurate. An editorial in Washington Post 10-25 gives more details. The young person must, as stated by Carpenter, have resided in the United States for five years and must then spend at least two years either in college or the uniformed services. But there's more: the kid must have entered the United States before age 16, have lived here for at least five years, and graduated from high school "with an unblemished record" before obtaining conditional legal status, which then continues for another five years during which at least two must be spent in college or the uniformed services. What Carpenter fails to show clearly is that the kid is here through no fault of his own because, if he meets the criteria of the act, he must have entered this country as a minor child. It's not his fault that his parents brought him here illegally.

That distinction seems to me worthy of attention, unless you want to dispose of this as nastily as The Heritage Foundation did by saying that "the Democrats want to play the kid card". I am sickened by conservatives' recent statements about children. We had Michelle Malkin's unconscionable attack on a 12 year-old because he appeared in a Democratic ad. Then on 10-22-07 3:55 "Big Dawg" posted on townhall "Every time the left wants to soak my pocketbook again for some moonbat social program, they drag out "It's for the children". This country ran a lot better when we had poorhouses and orphanages."

We are turning our backs on a wellspring of potential. Google was invented by an immigrant kid. What has Malkin or Big Dawg invented?

Correction: Schips
as much as I misspell, I should just forget it.

"dream act" should be put to sleep..
and All the RINO political Hacks who voted for this sneaky back door Amnesty should be voted out!
That includes the one TX Senator, Rep. Kay Baily Hutchison, who voted for the blantant incremental amnesty, as well as the Dim's expanded Scips Hillary-care bill. If this is her misguided way of pandering to become the next Gov of Tx... She might consider running as a Demorat.

Silas, your 6:36pm post said,
"When people from Guatemala enter Mexico illegally, they punish them and throw them out of the country.
When Mexicans enter the U.S. illegally they are given free health care, food stamps, free education, in Spanish, and the loving adoration of our out of touch politicians on the tax payers dime."

You are so right, but I would add that Mexico SHOOTS Guatemalan invaders as well. Mexico does not tolerate Guatemalan illegals bringing drugs into Mexico and imprisoning Mexican border guards for catching the drug runners either.

Also, Mexicans who enter the U.S. illegally and commit crimes are housed in United States prisons at taxpayer expense as well (on top of all the other subsidized taxpayer dollars/free care they receive.)

Virginia Patriot, you are right about this being a big election issue. I want to hear more from Duncan Hunter (and LESS from/about Rudy!)

WHEN will Congress figure it out? Americans do not want amnesty of ANY kind, no matter how these Senators and Reps. cloak the language of these bills (the Ag Bill in the House being the next one up.) Americans are not stupid, we see what they are trying to do, and we are winning. Thanks to all who called, faxed, and emailed the various Senators to put a stop to amnesty!

ARE YOU GETTING IT YET!
It just amazes me that these pieces of garbage keep trying to ram amnesty down our throats.

A special note to Mel Martinez. The good people of Florida have had it with your crap.
Start re-doing your resume.

Dems. want to cheapen citizenship
down to nothing.

In CA, illegals vote with impunity. Court cases to address the fraudulent votes are regarded as "racial" cases.

In DC this weekend, I was treated to the crew who are awaiting queen Hillary to hire them (former Clintonites and even some Carter leftovers) so they can turn the US into their idea of a great country: Sweden.

I'm not kidding. Sweden is the left's ideal.

If the Reps. don't ger their act together, nominate and elect Giuliani, 8 years of Hillary and the Dems. will give you a 3rd-rate socialist country dependent on water power and Clairol in place of s US that freed 1.5 billion people since Lincoln freed the slaves as compared to Sweden which sat out WW I and II, since war is so environmentally incorrect.

A dreqm act veto sustained
by only 8 votes. Many pundits believe the DEMs could well pick up 8 seats in the senate in 08. Then what? TruLib said yesterday that SS and other entitlements would cause meltdown soon. Soon or late, and late means inside 15 years. Its not the oldtimers who voted in these rascals, its the young kids who have never been afraid of invasion, or of feeding their family, or watched the films of death camp survivors. Maybe they will learn in time, maybe not.

Robert
You're equally as deranged as the movie character you quote. Thank you for removing any possible doubt.

Sam- US SENATE - ENEMIES
Sam is right, both sides most go. Also, I moniter some of the so called left sights such as Huff-po. Even there commenters are 85 % against the open borders ideology. This victory goes to show that calling Senators and reps., works. I called mine, as did everyone I know. In order to turn the country around, we all have to become activists. Please, do not give up. Also, we must defeat the right ,vs left, mentality. Or at least try. It is that thinking that makes the public, so easily manipulated. There has to be certain issues, such as illegals that we must all agree on. Also free speech, 2nd amendment rights, and freedom of the press. I simply do not like the current administrations version of open borders, international conservatism.

Trent Lott not a Texan
Please correct your records. Trent Lott, that sorry excuse for a Republican, is not from Texas. The putz is from Mississippi.

Another win for the good guys
Exxxcellent.

Durbin said we shouldn't punish the children of parents who break our laws. Which we shouldn't. Then again, we shouldn't reward them either, which is what this DREAM (Nightmare) Act would have done.

If these illegal immigrants want their children to get a higher education, it should be their responsibility, not the taxpayers.

The only way they should be able to circumvent the long and tedious task of becoming a true American citizen is at least a 4-year commitment to the US military.

Why
Why should we give green cards to illegal aliens sho are students when we do not give them to legal aliens who are students?

This is nuts. Fortunately Hutchison and Craig will be replaced soon. Hatch, Lott and Bennett aught to know better and Brownback in hopeless.

Why are Huckabee and Brownback open borders? Immigration has now become the most important wedge issue that the Republican Party has. It is crucial that we do not repeat the mistake of putting a "Christian" conservative at the head of the party who will negate the issue and so he can sell the country down the river.

Sick of This
Give it up all ready, Ried/Durbin and company. American citizens, whom you are supposed to represent, have spoken in a loud and clear voice, over and over again...NO AMNESTY!!!

How arrogant these flea brains are!!!

Out of touch
This is another example of where the Republicans are no better then the Democrats on protecting our border from invasion from Mexico.
When people from Guatemala enter Mexico illegally, they punish them and throw them out of the country.
When Mexicans enter the U.S. illegally they are given free health care, food stamps, free education, in Spanish, and the loving adoration of our out of touch politicians on the tax payers dime.

Back Door Amnesty Fails
This was a back door amnesty. Put to a vote within 48 hours.

Give credit to Senate Republicans for holding their ground. Only a few voted for this "dead of night" bill.

Senators realize voters that contacted their office last summer would have been outraged by the switch.

Democrats are setting themselves up for failure.

A strong border control candidate like Duncan Hunter can win over Democrats and independents.

Giuliani? No way....Not even with Hannity slobering all over Rudy's ring.

Hannity: What a fake. Hannity sucks up the FOX party line. Which is Giuliani all the way.

Don't let the door hit you on the way out.

The worst
I'm not yet sure exactly why, but this incident--the entire government looks on as a Senator brings known, PROVEN law-breakers into the Capitol and does nothing--bothers me more than any other thing our government has done. This is the worst insult, the worst slap in the face.

It's all so blatant, so WILLFUL. It is so black-and-white. They pass the laws; we are fined, imprisoned, or executed if we disobey. And yet, in the very room where these laws are forged, in clear view of one and all, they disobey, and NOTHING IS DONE.

THE LAW DOES NOT APPLY TO THEM.

This is not a republic--it is a tyranny, an oligarchy. The only question is one of degree.

Perhaps emotion is distorting my perspective, but I believe that if this is allowed to stand, we will have crossed a dangerous line. Historically, freedom has been given away easily, but bought back dearly.

"Uniformed services"
By the time Dick Turban and his minions would be through, we would have everyone from McDonald's kitchen help, to prisoners, to school crossing guards being included in the "uniformed services"

The Democrats have failed
to do any of the things that they promised, as America voted them into the majority 3 years ago. They have failed to end the war. They have failed to make government more transparent. They have failed to corral pork and earmarks.

But most important, like their Republican counterparts, they have failed to listen to their American constituents. They should ALL be tarred and feathered, as far as I'm concerned. (Well, not Jeff Session or Jim Demint, but dang near most all of them.)

I would
not be opposed to giving green cards to immigrants who serve in the military first, before they go to school. If they spend four years willing to bleed for this country that works for me. Ive served 8 years now and have seen many immigrants in the military that serve with honor.

Other than that, close the border. Don't let anyone else in for 4 or 5 years and have ICE kick people out left and right. When we start to even out, then you can start the legal immigration process again.

If tomorrow...

I ask 10 voting Democrats.. "have you heard of the dream act?". They will all answer, No.

Because, this information will not be in one newspaper in the entire State of Michigan. If it were, Michigan would change it's color.

Democrats hide their true colors.

Do You Want To Keep Your Country?

Securing the border and enforcing the law is the only way we get to keep our rule of law, our representative Republic, and our Constitution. We must elect a President who WILL secure the border and enforce the law. If citizenship becomes meaningless, this will no longer be the United States of America.

The so-called "top tier" will not get out the voters necessary for a GOP win. Increasing turnout is the key. Give people something to vote for. Not just the lesser of two evils. Won't work this time. People are fed up with the inundation of illegal aliens. They would come out in droves for the clear choice of D=amnesty or R=enforcement. They will stay home if they both equal amnesty.

There is a huge majority of American citizens waiting for someone to pledge to uphold the laws and secure the borders, let's not ignore them any more.
