Jillian Bandes is Obsessed With Matt Lewis
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 5:55 PM
Jillian -- Please forgive me for not responding within minutes of your latest blog post, as I have a life.

Also, please forgive me for gearing my initial response toward something you were "clearly joking about."  Because your entire blog post seemed like a joke to me, I was not sure which of your weak arguments to crush first.

Based on your request, I will attempt to respond to your personal diatribe against me.  Please note that, out of respect, I did not even mention your name in my original post.  Clearly, that same courtesy was not extended to me, so here goes....

As the Las Vegas Review Journal recently reported,

The poll by Washington, D.C.-based Mason-Dixon Polling & Research Inc. shows 23 percent of Republicans favored Lowden to 21 percent for Tarkanian with 44 percent undecided.
... Call it what you will, Lowden is ahead in the polls, albeit narrowly.  Frankly, either candidate can beat Reid, and (apparently, unlike you) I'm okay with either Republican.  You may argue over the word "clearly" -- but you cannot argue that Lowden is, technically speaking, the "frontrunner."

(By the way, the poll you linked to in your post is from August.  Could you at least pick a poll that isn't two months old???)

As you noted, in my original post, I wrote that Lowden is the clear front runner, but I also said "she has a long way to go."

In my estimation, this is true.  I am not supporting her (or anybody else, for that matter), but my political analysis is that she will win.  To be sure, I may be wrong, but that's my opinion.  I'm not sure why you've taken such umbrage to this one political opinion.  Last time I checked, that's what this was all about.

While I understand your objection to the word "clearly," your youth and
political naivete were on full display when you wrote, "I confirmed the story with two different McCain staffers with knowledge of the situation."

... My only question is...were these the same trusted McCain staffers who also met Sarah Palin at the door wearing nothing but a towel???

Clearly, you cannot seriously base your piece on "trusted" McCain staffers telling you something.  Do they work for the opponent?  Do they have an agenda?  Who knows -- but I wouldn't assume they are telling you -- a young reporter for Townhall.com -- the truth.  Shall I pick up the phone and call Terry Nelson, or Mark McKinnon, or Rick Davis so we can get to the bottom of this?

Aside from being quixotic, you also misrepresented my piece when you wrote:  "I do find it interesting though that in Lowden’s rebuttal to the showgirl story she claims she was merely joking, but then claims that it’s perfectly normal for candidates to be met by showgirls in Vegas."

Read my piece -- Lowden did not claim it is normal for candidates to be met by showgirls -- at least, not to me.  Instead, I demonstrated that it was normal for dignitaries to be met by showgirls in Vegas.  You are either very sloppy, or intentionally misrepresenting my posting.  Either way, it is shoddy journalism.

The fact that you would misrepresent my post in such an egregious manner probably means that it's not worth my time to debate with you further, since, after all, you will misrepresent what I write...

Shouldn't It Be 14 Counts?
Posted by: Carol Platt Liebau at 5:48 PM
Nidal Hasan has been charged with 13 counts of premeditated murder.

But according to this list of the victims, Private Velez was pregnant.  So shouldn't Hasan be charged with 14 murders?

Last I checked, Laci and Conor's law is still on the books.

Oh my gosh.  I didn't know HUGH HEWITT was for Tark.  Wow, that changes everything!  I mean, he might even get President Romney to come out for Tark...

Re: Republican Lowden the Clear Front-Runner in Nevada
Posted by: Jillian Bandes at 4:28 PM
Matt, in responding to my story on Sue Lowden you made the sweeping declaration that she is the “clear frontrunner” for the Republican nomination in the Nevada Senate Race. Uh, based on what exactly?

Polling? Lowden and Tarkanian run roughly even when matched with Reid. And according to this poll,  Tark was in first place with 29 percent, and Lowden was a distant third. Granted, Dean Heller was included in that poll. But even in this poll, which everyone and their mother is citing, they're in a statistical dead heat. This other poll shows the same thing.

Organization? Due to being chairman of the NV GOP, it follows that Lowden has some kind of statewide organization, but we don’t really know since she’s never been a candidate. Moreover, whatever else you want to say about the Paul people, they work their tails off, and fairly or unfairly they now hate Lowden’s guts.

Those folks you saw last year hanging off highway overpasses to elect their guy? Yeah, well, now that energy is going to be directed towards destroying Lowden. Like it or not, it’s an issue she’ll have to contend with. Being State GOP Chairman is a great advantage, but it comes with baggage too. You have to make people mad in that job and Lowden clearly did.

Lowden also told me, personally, that she's scrambling around the state, trying to up her name recognition in areas other than her home base of Vegas. That doesn't sound especially promising when stacked up against Tark, who has been campaigning for over a year already. Tarkanian has run twice statewide, so we know he’s got a structure in place too, although granted, he didn’t win either time. So they’ve both got pluses and minuses. So I assume you’re not basing your statement on organization.

How about money?

Lowden doesn’t have to file until January, so we don’t even know how much cash she has. While her personal net worth is substantial, this is a primary that about 125,00 people are going to vote in. You can only buy so much TV, and you can only be in the mail every day. Diminishing returns occur rather quickly. Granted, Lowden’s personal money would be a huge asset if she makes a general election, but again, doesn’t do much for her ability to get out of a primary.

Tarkanian has raised about $250k in the 6 weeks since his campaign started from over 6000 people. Again, we won’t know how that matches up to Lowden ‘til January, but not bad for starters.

As an aside, regarding the “showgirl” story, (which you quickly dismissed as “wacky”), I confirmed the story with two different McCain staffers with knowledge of the situation. There was even more that I could have included but left it out in the interest not being overly snarky. This isn’t Wonkette, after all.

I do find it interesting though that in Lowden’s rebuttal to the showgirl story she claims she was merely joking, but then claims that it’s perfectly normal for candidates to be met by showgirls in Vegas. Well, which is it? Was it a perfectly normal strategy to suggest to McCain? Was the McCain campaign a few sequined bodices and flamingo head dresses short of putting Nevada’s 5 electoral votes in the GOP column? Was Lowden just kidding, contrary to what my sources tell me directly? Or did did Lowden just have a really wacky idea that in retrospect, she feels embarrased about?

Lastly, if Lowden’s not the frontrunner based on available polling data, in-state organization or dollars raised, from whence does her alleged status as “clear front runner” come? The only other thing I can think of  is conservative celebrity endorsements. And by my count, right now, Tark’s got Hugh Hewitt on his side, and Lowden’s got, uh, Matt Lewis. And while you’re a swell guy, Matt, to paraphrase Lloyd Bentsen, I know Hugh Hewitt, and you’re no Hugh Hewitt.

UPDATE: Two of the three polls I cited were taken before Lowden officially entered the race, so that should certainly be taken into account when considering the frontrunner. I'm eager to see further polling in this race. Also, though he has certainly spoken kindly about Tark on his show, Hugh Hewitt has not officially endorsed anyone. I'm also looking forward to seeing his pick, if he does decide to endorse someone.

Fort Hood Shooter's Business Cards Advertised Extremism
Posted by: Meredith Jessup at 4:23 PM
ABC News is reporting that Maj. Nidal Hasan proclaimed himself as a "Soldier of Allah" on private business cards he purchased over the internet.  Apparently a box of these business cards was found in his Ft. Hood apartment.

The cards don't mention anything about Hasan's military background, but note that he is a psychiatrist.  The letters "SoA (SWT)" appear on the cards beneath Hasan's name.  Investigators and experts are now saying it's clear Hasan was making no secret of his allegiances: "SoA" is an acronym used on jihadist Web sites meaning "Soldier of Allah," and "(SWT)" is reportedly a common acronym used by Muslims to reference "Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala" which means "Glory to God."

Can we finally call this act terrorism?

Re: Beck Has No Sympathy for Carrie Prejean
Posted by: Jillian Bandes at 3:58 PM
In response to the ongoing Prejean meme today: She may be poorly-spoken, but she's not hypocritical. Most people attacking her for her "sex tape" made at age 17 would (ostensibly) support a 17-year-old's right to get an abortion. They aren't really concerned with what Prejean does or does not believe; they just want a scapegoat for their hatred of conservative values.

Her performance on King, and elsewhere, has been abysmal. We don't have to love her. But we certainly shouldn't hate her. There are enough people doing that already.

ACORN Suing Federal Government Over Denied Funds
Posted by: Meredith Jessup at 3:39 PM
The suit, which was filed in New York's federal court, claims that the bills passed in both the Senate and the House to cut off funding to the group are unconstitutional:
ACORN claims that the legislation was of “malicious and punitive intent.” The suit also claims Congress violated the Fifth Amendment by skirting due process before doling out the punishment of the funding cut. OMB Director Peter Orszag and Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner are listed as co-defendants in the suit. ...

The lawsuit, which was brought by the Center for Constitutional Rights, says that ACORN has been subject to “heavily funded and orchestrated political campaigns.”

But this effort represents a complete reversal from ACORN, which emphasized to reporters and the public that the money it received from the federal government was not essential to its existence.

Now the group is taking a bold step to restore its federal funding by accusing Congress of violating the Constitution.

Yet Another Summit
Posted by: Carol Platt Liebau at 3:30 PM
Whenever the Obama administration seems confronted with a domestic political problem, one solution comes to the fore: Hold a summit.

A symphony of chin music may be silly but meaningless when it comes to effecting "reconciliation" between a Harvard professor and a Cambridge cop, but it's somewhat more frustrating when the President offers it as proof positive of his commitment to employment.  But that's what he's doing: He's proposed a "jobs summit" for December.

The problem for the Democrats -- most notably, the President -- is that they don't want to do the things that will stimulate the economy and put people back to work.  They're not interested in things like payroll tax cuts, or corporate tax cuts, or income tax cuts.  After all, they need the taxpayer money to fund, as best they can, the huge (and hugely unpopular) expansion of government, from health care to cap'n trade, that they've been working toward.

In order for businesses to want to expand, those who do the hiring have to feel confident that a big-taxing, high-regulating, ever-more-intrusive federal government isn't going to make their lives miserable.  And right now, that's a confidence no rational person could feel.

And no amount of learned chit-chat from the chin-strockers and deep-thinkers at a summit is going to change that.

"Rules for Radicals" Coming to a Classroom Near You!
Posted by: Meredith Jessup at 3:02 PM
Gateway Pundit reports that the National Education Association (NEA) website recommends Saul Alinsky's "Rules for Radicals" as a teaching aid.  No joke.

Here's a taste of the NEA's review of Alinsky's work:

“Radicals precipitate the social crisis by action – by using power. Liberals may then timidly follow along or else, as in most cases, be swept forward along the course set by Radicals, but all because of forces unloosed by Radical action. They are forced to positive action only in spite of their desires …

* “The American Radical will fight privilege and power whether it be inherited or acquired by any small group, whether it be political or financial or organized creed.

* “He curses a caste system which he recognizes despite all patriotic denials.

* “He will fight conservatives whether they are business or labor leaders.

* “He will fight any concentration of power hostile to a broad, popular democracy, whether he finds it in financial circles or in politics.

* “The Radical recognizes that constant dissension and conflict is and has been the fire under the boiler of democracy. He firmly believes in that brave saying of a brave people, “Better to die on your feet than to live on your knees!”

* “The Radical may resort to the sword but when he does he is not filled with hatred against those individuals whom he attacks. He hates these individuals not as persons but as symbols representing ideas or interests which he believes to be inimical to the welfare of the people.

* “That is the reason why Radicals, although frequently embarking upon revolutions, have rarely resorted to personal terrorism.”

Alinsky practiced what he preached. He said, “Tactics means doing what you can with what you have … tactics is the art of how to take and how to give.”

And they are recommending this stuff to teachers who will be in the classroom instructing our children... oy.

Rumblings In The Conservative Underdog World
Posted by: Jillian Bandes at 2:16 PM
Conservatives are poking around to see if their failed underdog in NY-23 was conned out of some votes:
Unless Conservative candidate Doug Hoffman got exactly zero votes in the town of Fenner (Owens got 157, Scozzafava got 248), and at one polling place in the town of Hamilton (Owens got 75, Scozzafava got 79), and at one polling place in the town of Sullivan (Owens got 173, Scozzafava got 251), the initial vote totals look rather hinky.

By comparison, the lowest number of votes that Owens got at any polling place was 57; the lowest number the withdrawn candidate Scozzafava got was 2. It's not impossible that no one in any of those places chose to vote for Hoffman, but it certainly seems unusual for a guy who got 45 percent district-wide.
The margin was such that it would have to be a pretty big voter fraud for the results to come out any differently. But it's still very much worth gossiping about.

Then there's this special emergency meeting being requested by Marco Rubio supporters in Florida:
We have observed in recent weeks an unprecedented series of reports and events in the media which cast negative perceptions of the Republican Party, both to the public and to our members.  While many factors may be involved in the various circumstances, our members and the public are receiving continuing negative reports about issues involving financing, candidates, political activities and more, concerning the Republican Party.  This has been, and continues to be, extremely damaging to our Party, our candidates, and our members.
I can imagine how that meeting would go: "How about you take notice of a candidate who is actually supported by Florida voters, instead of lining up behind Crist like bunch of little tweenage girls at a Hanna Montana concert?"

Happy Birthday Morton Blackwell!
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 1:56 PM
On November 16, Morton Blackwell will celebrate his 70th birthday.  Tonight, there will be a dual celebration: Morton's 70th birthday -- and his Leadership Institute's 30th birthday.

If you're not familiar with Morton, you should be; few modern conservative leaders have done more to advance the cause of liberty.

Morton has had a long and distinguished career.  Before founding The Leadership Institute (Li) in 1979, he was Barry Goldwater’s youngest elected delegate to the 1964 Republican National Convention in San Francisco.  In 1980, he organized and oversaw the national youth effort for Ronald Reagan.  He then served as Special Assistant to the President from 1981-1984.  In 1984, he became the full-time President of Li.

Having worked at Li for four years, I can personally tell you that the organization is one of the most important in the nation -- and that Morton is one of the most dedicated and honorable men I have ever known.  I feel truly blessed to have known him and to have worked for him.  Clearly, I would not be doing what I am doing were it not for the lessons I learned from Morton.

Aside from being dedicated to training the next generation of conservative leaders, Morton and his wife Helen are proud grandparents.  And Morton also has an interesting hobby: He is an avid beekeeper.

Morton has said of his late friend Paul Weyrich that, "If there were a Mount Rushmore for conservative leaders, Paul's face would have to be on it."

I think it's fair to also say that Morton's face would be right there, too...
