47% Will Pay No Federal Tax In 2009
Posted by: Townhall.com Staff at 4:57 PM
Zero Hedge points out that 47% of Americans won't pay a single cent in taxes in 2009, despite utilizing government services far more than the other 53%. What's more is that 5% of  taxpayers account for 60.6% of all tax revenue.
Brilliant plan to keep the country happy: the poor pay no taxes, the rich get a massive stock market bubble to sell into, and the disappearing middle class...well, they can pay $20 for a hotdog and beer combo in Prague on that once-every-five-years vacation.

The Government Goblins
Posted by: John Campbell at 10:36 AM

Those of you who read this blog, know that I enjoy posting the occasional political cartoon, and I stumbled across this one this week by Walt Handelsman that is particularly appropriate. The scariest goblins this Halloween are government run health care, the national energy tax, and taxes to pay for more bureaucracies that spend more of your money.

Happy Halloween!

Happy Halloween

The Special Delivery Project
Posted by: Townhall.com Staff at 7:00 AM
Guest post from Andrew Moylan, Director of Government Affairs, National Taxpayers Union

Let the National Taxpayers Union deliver YOUR video message on health care to Congress!

NTU is launching a new effort where we're asking YOU to send us a short video with a message to your Members of Congress about why big government is not the solution to our health care woes. We will then burn each and every one of those videos to DVD and personally deliver them to your Members of Congress. For the most compelling messages, we'll even schedule meetings with Congressional staff to show the video and discuss the issue. We hope that this project will allow a citizen's voice to be heard in a way that emails and faxes could never approximate.

So take a few minutes and record your message to Congress! Tell them why you think that higher taxes and bigger government are NOT prescriptions for our health care ailments.

Here are the guidelines…

Respond directly to our video on YouTube. When you do that, please also send a message through YouTube to natltaxpayersunion that includes your contact information (email or phone). If you'd prefer not to use YouTube, you may email your submission (with your contact information) to ntu@ntu.org with a subject line: Health care video.

*Make your video passionate, but respectful. Shoot for about two minutes in length. And we don't need Hollywood production values, just your hometown values from the heart.

*Please be sure to give your name, home town, and information about who your Representative in the House and two Senators are.

*Please submit your video by Friday, October 9th. That will allow us time to deliver your video message during the heart of the health care debate on Capitol Hill.

*Keep in mind that we will not deliver videos from trolls, or those containing messages that are vulgar, offensive, or irrelevant to the cause.

*Disclaimer: by submitting a video on YouTube or through email, you are agreeing to allow the National Taxpayers Union (NTU) to show the video publicly (including on our website/blog and other locations on the internet), to make physical copies of it for distribution, as well as to use it for public education and lobbying purposes. In addition, videos submitted contain the thoughts and opinions of one individual and do not necessarily reflect the views of NTU or its members.

As you may know, NTU recently pitched in with organizing the massive 9/12 March on Washington. Hundreds of thousands of Americans showed up to express their frustration with the direction of our government. At the rally, we interviewed dozens of attendees and asked them what their short message to their representatives in Congress would be. We're now in the process of burning and delivering those messages to Congressional offices, but as many people as attended the rally, we know there were hundreds of thousands of you who couldn't come for one reason or another. We'd now like to give all of you an opportunity to have your voice heard in the same way as some who attended the march. We look forward to seeing your submissions!

Americans Don't Believe Obama's Tax Promises
Posted by: Jillian Bandes at 5:28 PM
Two questions asked by a Fox News poll give new insight into what Americans are thinking with regards to the Obama administration's attitudes towards tax increases. Here were the questions and responses.

"Do you think your taxes will go up or down under the Obama Administration?"

75%    Up
16%    Down
9%      Don't know

"During the presidential election, then-candidate Obama said that if he
were elected ninety-five percent of Americans 'will not see their taxes
increase by a single dime.' Do you think Obama is going to keep that
campaign promise or not?"

26%   Yes
69%   No
5%     Don't know

Brendan Buck, a spokesman for the Republican Study Committee, had this to say about the results.
It doesn't take an advanced degree in economics to see what's coming from this administration. Contrary to their promises, with this much, spending it won't take long to run out of "rich" people to tax. After that, we all know who is next.

OBAMA: Hey watcha' know? I lied again... (subtitled: are you ready for 60% margial tax rates?)

"It's a process that we're watching..."

The D.C. based Tax Foundation, which specializes only in the numbers on taxes, yesterday released findings on the current Dem health care proposals working their way through Congress. What they uncovered was astounding.

If the House version of the Universal Health Care proposal becomes law, embracing the priorities that the President directed it to cover, the top tax rate would jump to 58%.

I've been speaking to Summit crowds this summer explaining what happens when a small business owner (the majority of the people who will be forced to pay this rate) are forced into these absurd, highly discriminatory, prejudiced tax scenarios. They shed work force, they slow their productivity, and a bigger recession than anything we've seen thus far under Obama's thumb... uh administration... WILL be coming about.

And this small note to all those pastors who read this space and are more concerned with the "social justice" issues like feeding the poor, (as opposed to the moral justice issues like allowing unborn children to be snuffed out in the womb or the upside down whacky combination of definitions that make a "family" this week) why won't you be speaking to this issue?

This tax will create worse unemployment in urban and impoverished households, though all will suffer. This tax will have an adverse effect on the quality of life from poor to middle class. America will again begin to see hungry children and suffering families.

And here's why: COMPANIES NEVER PAY TAXES. They never have. Customers to those companies pay the taxes or they go bankrupt.

60% tax also far exceeds Obama's campaign promise to do no worse than return the tax codes to the 1990's.

And the White House response when called on it?

"It's a process and we're watching..."

Hope and Change!

NO WE CAN'T!!! (fund what we promise...)

Nope!

This headline should have a lot of people worried today!

With the downturn in the economy it is now more urgent than ever previously known that the government get a form of genuine tax relief into the pockets of real WORKERS (not slugs who aren't producing.)

In getting taxes lowered REVENUES would go up - as they did under the Kennedy, Reagan, and Bush tax cuts.

But this is not the plan for Obama et al. Nope, he's going to raise taxes, which will further put a choke hold on the slugs and workers alike.

It's basic Economics 101, but as with many of the issues he's facing in the first term, these complexities are turning out to be "above his paygrade."

AND NOW: From that bastion of right-wing extremism... The Washington Post... comes the "National Sales Tax!"

Canada, United States Have Similar Spending Levels; Americans Are Taxed Less
Posted by: Jillian Bandes at 12:42 AM
The Washington Post says that U.S. government spending is nearly the same as the Canadian government's spending, measured as percentage of GDP.

Of course, the Post's writers latch on to the argument that "we should learn from the Canadians," at least in terms of spending trends; Canadians have apparently been on a trend of decreased spending, while Americans have been on a trend of increased spending.

Photobucket

Problem is, Americans don't think they're spending more. Americans incur more debt but are taxed less, while Canadians are taxed more but have less debt.

Photobucket

If we were taxed at the appropriate levels for our current spending like Canadians seem to be — how would Americans react to the massive entitlement plans and spending programs currently being pushed through Congress?

If paying for all the spending was the immediate reality instead of a distant problem — would we really stand for it?

"Hi I don't know squat about business, and my name is Barack Obama"
Posted by: Kevin McCullough at 1:39 PM

Killing consumers one act at a time...

Since President Obama has never run so much as a corner store, it's easy to understand why he might just be so confused about how the real business world works. He's never had to meet a payroll. He's never had to do projections, or cost analysis, and certainly has no idea how to help poor people.

Because he keeps doing things to make it more and more difficult for them.

Today he's announcing that he's going to crack down on business taxes, discounting some of the deductions that they are allowed to take.

He calls it closing loopholes. Economists call it lengthening the chance of economic recovery from his worst in a generation recession that he seems insistent upon making last as long as possible.

He says companies are avoiding paying taxes they should be paying. Yet he's not accusing them of breaking any laws. In other words, in a global economy if they can base portions enough of their operations to be able to establish a more profitable address to operate from he now wishes to take that opportunity away.

Will he do the same to foreign owned businesses?

No.

Why?

Because he wants their trade and operation to take place in the U.S.!

What he is willing to do is make it more expensive for businesses to do business, and ultimately that doesn't hurt anyone more than John Q. Public.

See here's a little concept that Obama does not realize, nor does he understand. Businesses are not the individuals who pay businesses taxes.

Consumers are.

Every time a business is charged a cost to operate from the government (taxed). They line-item that puppy, and fold it into the cost of the product, good, or service.

They do the same thing with their light bill, phone costs, internet support. The customer pays for all of it. THEY HAVE TO. Otherwise the business would not be able to operate.

See President Doesn't-Have-A-Clue is still insisting on raising the income and federal tax rates on the working people. Economically speaking this is going to reduce the amount of capital that can be raised for the federal treasury. To make up for that shortfall he is now being forced to look at "creative measures" to attempt to raise the amount he will need to fund his largest expansion of government in the history of the United States.

He thinks there is some limitless pot of gold for businesses (which he deems evil and greedy to begin with) and that simply barking at them, "pay more," will solve his problem.

He really needs better advisers. Because now in addition to the extra taxes his tax increases will bring about, and in addition to the tax on the little guy that "Cap & Trade" taxes will bring about, NOW President Obama is adding his 3rd layer of taxes onto the consumers, citizens, little people of America by being punitive in operational taxation against businesses.

I'm sure there will be more to come. But just remember this important concept, "Businesses don't pay taxes... people do."

And thank President Present when you get tapped once more to help fund all this "Hope and Change!"

OBAMA: I promise MORE layoffs, higher unemployment, and greater poverty for all!

Shep's Spot

The Wall Street Journal ran this tidbit yesterday:
Last year Congress raised the minimum wage, which is set to rise to $7.25 an hour next year from the current $6.55. But Mr. Obama wants to raise it again, to $9.50 per hour by 2011, and index it for inflation. Mr. Obama says further increases are necessary so that "full-time workers earn a living wage that allows them to raise their families and pay for basic needs." According to Census data, less than 1% of workers over 25 are earning the minimum. And rather than family heads or full-time workers, they tend to be young single adults, teenagers living at home or spouses providing a second income.
Moments ago Shep Smith was discussing it on FoxNews and admitted that when he runs down to get his Wendy's Value meal in New York - that it turns out to be $11. (For the same meal that would cost $3.50 in Mobile, Alabama.)

Shep points out the obvious truth.

When you force up the minimum wage two interesting things happen.

Products and Services get more expensive - thus TAXING everyone in America, and secondly many companies have to lay people off to get their employment budget in line.

Sure it sounds magnanimous for THE ONE to talk about people getting more pay. But it doesn't happen in a vacuum. And just like his ideas about "taxing business" it will not work.

Businesses - don't "PAY" for anything. People who frequent businesses, customers who order from businesses, and clients who order from businesses PAY FOR EVERYTHING. (Including an increase in wages, or 45% taxation that an Obama administration would likely level against them.)

Truly uneducated poor people, are about to rush into office a man who is about to create the single biggest season of unemployment, high tax, stagnated economic depression-like conditions we've seen in three generations. And while they've been mesmerized by his good looks, fancy words, and slogans of profound depth like "Hope and Change." The truth is he is about to unleash the single biggest assault against the poor of my lifetime...

PEOPLE - there is NOT an endless stream of "money" that Washington can GIVE you. That money comes from those who have earned it.

TAX FOUNDATION: MITT raised taxes more than HUCK!
Posted by: Kevin McCullough at 7:55 AM

"Governor you raised taxes more than me..."

Michael Medved broke down the numbers this morning... and basically cites both men as exemplary leaders - but on the cold hard facts - Mitt raised taxes slightly more than Huck...

According to figures from the non-partisan Tax Foundation (based on data from the Bureau of Economic Analysis, Department of Commerce), Huckabee’s term as governor (1996-2007) led to a modest increase in the overall State-Local tax burden for Arkansas: from 10.1% in the year he became governor to 11.1% the last year he served. In terms of overall tax burden (state-local-federal) Arkansas remained virtually unchanged--- from 30.3% (39th among the 50 states) to 30.5% (32nd place).

Mitt Romney, on the other hand, saw sharper increases in taxes during his single gubernatorial term (2003 to 2007) in Massachusetts. The state-local burden rose from 9.8% the year of his election to 10.5% his last year as governor. Meanwhile, the total tax burden went up from 31.2% to 33.9% -- vaulting Massachusetts from 9th place to 7th place in the nation.

These numbers don’t prove that Huckabee was a great governor, or that Romney was a poor governor: actually, both men count as exemplary public servants and authentic conservatives (and both of them have taken Grover Norquist’s “No New Taxes” Pledge—in contrast to their rivals Giuliani, Thompson and McCain, who have refused to do so). Both candidates deserve respect for doing a solid job in handling state legislatures with overwhelming Democratic majorities and scoring some notable achievements as governor (though both states flipped to Democratic control in 2006).

For those who are interested in the truth, however, the growth of the tax burden in Arkansas under 11 years of Huckabee looks no worse (and actually a tad better) than the growth of taxes in Massachusetts under 4 years of Romney.
