Pitty for Scott, Advice for McCain ...
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 5:05 PM
Two must-read's up on the WSJ ...

... First, Peggy Noonan (sort of) takes it easy on Scott McClellan.  She is, at least, somewhat sympathetic to him -- which makes her a member of a very elite group.  Here's the money quote:

"When I finished the book I came out not admiring Mr. McClellan or liking him but, in terms of the larger arguments, believing him."
... Second, Kimberley Strassel has terrific advice for John McCainHere's an excerpt:
"With Congress's approval rating at record lows, the time is ripe for a slam campaign. Barack Obama won't do it, since his Democratic colleagues are running the joint. But it's a huge opportunity for Mr. McCain, who could play Congress's failings off his promises for reform. Even as Republicans sagely warn their nominee to distance himself from the president, they're beginning to see that his more productive option might just be to throw them – and Congressional Democrats – under the Straight Talk bus.

Mr. McCain could take encouragement from history. Harry Truman managed a 1948 victory by trashing the "Do Nothing Congress." Upstart Barry Goldwater in 1952 told Arizonans that Majority Leader Ernest McFarland represented the mess in Washington, and snatched the Democrat's seat. Tom Daschle followed McFarland, after being pilloried for turning the Senate into a dead zone."

Now You've Ticked Off Bob Dole!
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 2:34 PM
If you haven't read Bob Dole's email to Scott McClellan yet, it's both biting and humorous.

This line stands out to me:

"In my nearly 36 years of public service I've known of a few like you. No doubt you will "clean up" as the liberal anti-Bush press will promote your belated concerns with wild enthusiasm. When the money starts rolling in you should donate it to a worthy cause, something like, "Biting The Hand That Fed Me." Another thought is to weasel your way back into the White House if a Democrat is elected. That would provide a good set up for a second book deal in a few years."
(Emphasis mine).

Hmm.  Who has switched sides in recent history???  Think he was referencing of David Gergen there?

Turk has commented on the story on his own blog.

Sound Familiar? Here's McClellan on Richard Clark's "Tell All" Book
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 6:30 PM
Via the White House's website, here's what Scott McClellan had to say about Richard Clark's book back in '04:

Q Why do you think he's doing this?

MR. McCLELLAN: Well, why, all of a sudden, if he had all these grave concerns, did he not raise these sooner? This is one-and-a-half years after he left the administration. And now, all of a sudden, he's raising these grave concerns that he claims he had. And I think you have to look at some of the facts. One, he is bringing this up in the heat of a presidential campaign. He has written a book and he certainly wants to go out there and promote that book. Certainly let's look at the politics of it. His best buddy is Rand Beers, who is the principal foreign policy advisor to Senator Kerry's campaign. The Kerry campaign went out and immediately put these comments up on their website that Mr. Clarke made.

(Emphasis mine).

David Gregory: This Doesn't Sound Like Scott ...
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 6:04 PM
It's not just Karl Rove and Bush loyalists who are saying that Scott McClellan's new book doesn't sound like him.  MSNBC's David Gregory -- who was a White House corespondent during McClellan's tenure as press secretary -- agrees.   He just reiterated that very point on his MSNBC show.

As Variety reports, he said something similar last night:

On Wednesday's edition of "Today," "NBC Nightly News" reporter David Gregory, who covered the White House while McClellan was spokesman, said, "There was never any indication that Scott McClellan, either publicly or privately, held these kinds of views about what was happening at the time on the war, on Katrina, on the leak case -- which was his most difficult hour in the White House. He never expressed anything like this."

Act Surprised ...
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 12:20 PM
Remember when Rove said it sounded like the McClellan book was writtern by a liberal blogger?  Well, it looks like he got it half right.

NewsBusters' Brent Baker reports:

"Peter Osnos, who wrote Wednesday that he 'worked very closely' with Scott McClellan on McClellan's new book published by PublicAffairs which Osnos founded, is a liberal whose publishing house is affiliated with the far-left The Nation magazine and the publisher of The Prosecution of George W. Bush for Murder. PublicAffairs has a roster of authors who are nearly all liberals and/or liberal-leaning mainstream media figures, including six books by far-left bank-roller George Soros."

Sell Out ... With Me Tonight ...
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 3:04 PM

Tucker Carlson just made a good point on MSNBC.  When asked whom the McClellan book would hurt most -- Bush or McCain -- he ended by saying (paraphrasing here): McClellan will have a very hard time finding a job now.

He's right.  And it's not because there will be retribution -- it's because nobody wants to hire someone who has a history of double-crossing his boss.

Though McClellan appears to be attempting to "cash-in" with his new book -- if that's his only goal, it's actually a poor long-term decision.  What is more, if he is seeking to restore his reputation, he is also on the wrong track.

While I would not seek to compare Bush to Nixon, I do beleive that it's interesting to note that the staffers who remained loyal Nixonite's (Colson, Liddy, Buchanon, Safire, Ben Stein, et al.) seem to have fared better over the years than the folks who abandoned him (for example, John Dean).

Now, if anyone could justify selling-out there boss, it would be a Nixon staffer.  Still, the public seems to respect staffers who remain loyal to their boss ...

Scott McClellan's Opportunistic Book
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 7:27 AM
Former Bush press secretary Scott McClellan -- easily the least effective of Bush's spokesmen -- has written a book that bashes Bush.

Whatever his other faults, clearly, Bush is guilty of is surrounding himself with too many staffers and advisers like McClellan.

Bush's legacy has been badly damaged by his staffing decisions, which included too many "loyal" Texans, too many liberals, and too many light-weights.

In this case, McClellan fits all three categories.

As a man thinketh in his heart... he abuses little girls!
Posted by: Kevin McCullough at 7:22 AM

Jack McClellan is no one I admire. For most of his sad existence he has lived with his parents, mooched off the government, and dreamed of having sex with little girls. He raised a ruckus not long ago in California for posting on his web-site his desires to copulate with underagers.

He also has made public promises not to do any of the things he's described in writing.

Somewhere along the line the authorities felt it wise to require him to be 30 feet from a child, (and/or a place where children congregate).

Yesterday he got busted for basically stalking a day care center where three year old girls were innocently playing nearby.

Does anyone believe that such action is not the beginning of his playing out of his fantasies? We were fortunate this time. But after he was charged for violating his restraining order - the police let him walk right out the door...

But nothing will happen right?

I mean in July a judge in Newark allowed Jose Carranza out on bail after a 31 count indictment of sexually assaulting a 5yr. old over the course of the last 4 years. And we can all see how well that turned out.
