"I think just a handful of new Republicans in the Senate could help change the direction.”
Posted by: Jillian Bandes at 2:11 PM
I keep hearing encouraging things out of Sen. Jim DeMint:
I need some new Republicans, people who believe in constitutional government, a balanced budget and liberty and so I’m out across the country recruiting new republicans who I think if they get here will not only challenge the institutions of government but be willing to even challenge the Republican Party and our leadership if they feel like we’re going in the wrong direction.
Of course, it'd help to have a Republican majority in the Senate, too...

Bush Threatened DeMint Over Vote
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 11:13 AM
I'm reading my advanced copy of Senator Jim DeMint's new book, Saving Freedom.  I'm still not finished, but wanted to share one part with you.

When Bush was trying to pass his No Child Left Behind bill, he called then-Congressman DeMint into the Oval Office and pleaded with him to avoid a blood bath" over an amendment he had added to the bill.  DeMint still voted against NCLB, but dropped the amendment because of Bush's "gentle persuasion."

... But things were different when it came to passing Medicare.  As DeMint recounts the story,

After publicly expressing my opposition to this bill, I was once again invited to meet with the president along with several other conscientious objectors.  In that meeting the President made it easy for me; he threatened me by telling the group, "some of you have tough elections and we are watching how you vote."  And he looked straight at me when he said it.

... You may have wondered how so many conservatives were co-opted into voting for bad legislation.  I think this answers the question.

Fortunately for DeMint, he resisted the pressure, and was rewarded by being elected the the U.S. Senate, where he is one of a hand-full of reliably conservative senators...

Guest Blog: Liberals Celebrate Big Government Today, But Americans Can Still Win Battle to Save Freedom
Posted by: John Campbell at 4:57 PM

Guest Blog by Senator Jim DeMint (R-S.C.)

Just a few hours ago, the U.S. House of Representatives voted 246-183 to pass the so-called “economic stimulus” package proposed by President Obama and written by congressional Senator Jim DeMintDemocrats. Every single House Republican opposed the bill. (Roll Call)

This evening members of the Senate will meet to cast their votes as well. Sadly, three Republicans will likely join Democrats to ensure the bill is passed.

The massive spending bill, filled to the brim with a liberal wish list of pork projects, spends a minimum of $789 billion and possibly as much as $3.27 trillion (Heritage Foundation).

As my friend, South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford, and I wrote today in the Washington Examiner (DC Examiner):

"Each and every one of the $800 billion in  taxpayer dollars that Mr. Obama wants to inject into the economy has to come from somewhere, and in this case, we are laying the bill at the feet of those  very children and grandchildren whose future the President says he’s committed  to protecting. And we share the belief that mortgaging the economic future of  successive generations of Americans in order to buy ourselves some short-term  job relief is not only bad policy, it’s an abdication of our  responsibility.  A moral argument is certainly in play here—Obama just  happens to be on the wrong side of it."

The final version of the bill was made available to the public (and to us Republicans in Congress) yesterday at 11 p.m., which gives us less than 24 hours to read 1,071 pages. I can guarantee you that none of my congressional colleagues will have read this bill in its entirety before they vote on it today. It will likely be years before we learn the true consequences of today's irresponsible action.

It is disappointing to see the same old games being played in Washington after being promised that things were finally going to change. However, there is reason to be hopeful. For weeks my office and others on Capitol Hill have been flooded with calls and letters from constituents voicing angry opposition to the stimulus package that will do little, if anything, to stimulate the economy. (McClatchy) It’s heartening to hear from so many of my fellow Americans who are informed and involved and anxious to preserve their freedom.

So while liberals rushed through a temporary victory for Big Government today, I am confident Americans will win the final battle for freedom in the days to come -- as long as they are vigilant in their quest and speak out to protect their liberties.

Elected as South Carolina’s 55th senator in 2004, Senator DeMint quickly established himself as one of the most effective conservative leaders in Washington, seeking to enact innovative solutions to improve America for future generations. He has been a tireless advocate for smaller government, individual liberty, a strong national defense and traditional values.

Americans For Prosperity gets 11,000 plus activists on call with Sen. DeMint
Posted by: Dwayne Horner at 9:07 PM
Over 11,000 conservative grassroots activists joined a call hosted by Americans For Prosperity for a chance to hear from Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC) and ask questions. Thanks to AFP for putting this call together, here are some quotes from Sen. DeMint:

"What President Obama wants right now is for the Republicans to own this bill with the Democrats. They don't want to own this because they know it's not going to work, they don't want it hung around their heads. If [the Democrats] can get 15 votes then they'll call it bi-partisan and we'll be stuck with it too."

"I am concerned [the Democrats] will do a little tweaking and a few Republicans might think it's an excuse enough to vote for it. We cannot do that, it would be too big of a comprimise. the last thing we need to right now is have more spending."

"My biggest fear right now is that they make a few changes in this bill, throw a few bones to Republicans, a bone to get them to vote for all this spending."

This was in response to a caller saying don't compromise by offering a smaller spending bill -- a bad idea as Sen. DeMint outlines. This is a bad bill, the House GOP stood firm and it is time for the Senate GOP to do the same. This is a porkpalooza designed to pay back all those who helped get Democrats elected in '06 and Obama in '08. Want evidence, go back to my earlier post today that details the pork that is in this bill!

Taking Care of Rangel's 'Monument to Me'
Posted by: Mary Katharine Ham at 10:27 AM
DeMint, Lord bless him, has offered an amendment to block this monstrosity:
"In what may be the ultimate in vanity plates, House Ways and Means Chairman Charlie Rangel (D-N.Y.) is hoping to steer some $2 million to a building project at the City College of New York that will house — wait for it — not one, not two, but three construction projects bearing the gravelly voiced lawmaker’s name." The project will reportedly include: the Charles B. Rangel Center for Public Service, the Rangel Conference Center, the Charles Rangel Library, and a “well-furnished office” for the lawmaker.

Naked Truthers Betray Us Banning Birthdays

2pm:
My take on the very latest...
- Truther Conquests on 9/11. How The REAL Truth of 9/11 killed 'em!
- Illegal Immigration no "crime" says Rudy. And the ship began to sink.
- Why are more leaving, rather than coming to NYC?

2:20pm:
Senators Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama dressed down General Petraeus. They question his integrity, and in these soundbytes they call him a liar. Neither chose to renounce the MoveOn.org ad that called the General who had been uanonimously confirmed by Democrats and Republicans General "Betray Us." NOW it turns out the New York Times helped subsidize the ad to begin with. Should this hurt the two Senators running for President? Should the New York Times ever again be considered an American newspaper? And will any of this impact your own view of the upcoming candidates for President? 800.345.WMCA.

P.S. Fortunately we have Jim DeMint on our side!

3pm:
My take on the latest...
- USA Today poll finds 55% of Americans believe USA Constitution establishes a Christian nation. 58% say teachers should be allowed to lead prayers in classrooms.
- Illegals going, "IN YOUR FACE" with activism. Smart move?.
- NJ School BANNING B-days...No cupcakes for YOU!

3:20pm
Naked in America... it ain't what it used to be. Or is it? ABC News is reporting that Americans are adopting a ho-hum attitude toward celebrities that bare it all. Covers of fashion, entertainment, society, and music magazines now seem to rush to have "celebrity 'x' or 'y'" showing it off. Is the assumption true? Does America not care any more? Do you? When you're at the check-out line in the grocery store do you shield your kids eyes, or is it "they're gonna see it anyway" time? Is there such a thing as decency anymore? 800.345.WMCA.

A Headline Every Good Conservative Should Strive For

Roll Call: DeMint's Tactics Irk GOP Leaders

The article is subscription-only, but the gist is that Republican leaders who've been accustomed to eating their pork from the public trough are none too happy about the earmark reform process or the attention DeMint and others are getting while fighting for it.
Publicly, many Senate Republicans applauded DeMint’s courage to take on the normally decorous chamber and for sticking up for conservative principles at a time when the party is struggling to regain its footing. But several Senators and high-level aides also privately noted that DeMint needs to be careful not to go too far, with several saying he runs the risk of being marginalized as he carves out a reputation of a flame-throwing, first-term Senator who casts aside legislating altogether.
“You have to always be careful around here not to overplay your hand,” Lott warned last week.

Although disagreements between the two date back to DeMint’s opposition to a Lott proposal to move train tracks in his state following Hurricane Katrina, the two have had an ugly split in recent weeks over DeMint’s role as Republican Steering Committee chairman. According to GOP aides, Lott yanked his annual $7,500 contribution to the committee’s funding after DeMint aides criticized his efforts to push through the failed immigration reform bill. Lott’s move to pull the funds was first reported in Congressional Quarterly.

“At some point [DeMint is] going to have to learn he can’t always throw missiles,” said one senior Republican aide. “He’s going to have to work on diplomacy. But so far he’s been rewarded for his behavior and has yet to pay a price for it.”
