Values Voters LIVE

So the whole gang is here in DC. I got in midway through the day yesterday. My co-blogger, Lady Professor Faith Ammen, has arrived. And Baldwin rolled in around 8pm last night.

Yesterday I had the chance to give a shout out to the AFR radio family, a good portion of which tunes us in on Saturdays, with Crane Durham, Devin Patrick, and Donn Cobb.

This morning I will be with Governor Huckabee, Focus on the Family, American Family Association, and Tony Perkins around 8:30. Then Governor goes to give his speech.

At 10am the OReilly Factor has asked if they can interview us. As soon as that's done we sit with the Star Tribune. At 12Noon today we are on the brand new ABC NEWS feature that runs on ABCNews.com from 12-12:15pm.

Then at 2pm Baldwin and I take the stage. We are doing something very different, in that our presentation will be tandem, simultaneous speeches, disguised cleverly as a piece of our radio show. That's 2pm EST and will be online in many places, we hope to be able to bring it to you on XtremeTelevision.

At 5pm we sign books...

Then at 9:30pm tonight - if you are in DC and under 25 years of age, come on over to the Omni Shoreham because we've got a JAMMIN' party going on tonight complete with games, food, music, and more... Baldwin and I will be hosting it and it will be... well let's just say more fun than you what you HAD planned on doing... (and its free...)

So that's the run down - we're all over the place today, along with Sarah Palin, Mike Huckabee, Carrie Prejean, Star Parker, Mitt Romney, Mike Pence, Rick Perry, Tim Pawlenty, Bill OReilly, Bill Bennett, John Boehner, and many, many, more...

Professor Ammen will be posting throughout the day, and as I mentioned we are going to try to bring you LIVE video coverage of the goings on right here:

"LIVE" Blogging from St. Paul
Posted by: Kevin McCullough at 11:17 PM

"HOME RUN er... GRAND SLAM!"

Major screw up by FoxNews - when they decided to go with Hannity&Colmes instead of cutting to the floor when Romney came on stage...

11:02pm - Harry Reid, "I don't like John McCain!" (No better accolade)

10:58pm - "Terrorists want to attack and inflict catastrophic harm, and he wants to read them their rights..."

10:56pm - "Styrofoam columns hauled back to the studio lot."

10:55pm - "Our opponent has penned two memoirs, but not even a single piece of legislation."

10:54pm - "Because drilling won't solve EVERY energy problem we have - is no reason to do nothing."

10:49pm - "As a Chief Executive..." (a phrase you didn't hear last week...)

10:46pm - "Serve the common good, and leave this nation better than we found it!"

10:46pm - "I'm not going to Washington to seek the media's good opinion, I'm going to Washington to serve this great country!"

10:44pm - "We prefer candidates who don't talk about us one way in Scranton and another way in San Francisco!"

10:43pm - "I guess that a small town mayor is sort of like a community organizer - except that you have actual responsibilities."

10:42pm - "Know the difference between a hockey mom and a bulldog... LIPSTICK!"

10:41pm - "I know those people, they grow our food, they fight our wars, and they're ALWAYS proud of America!"

10:39pm - "Every woman can walk through every door of opportunity!"

10:38pm - "He's still my guy!"

10:38pm - "To the families of special needs children, I pledge to you - you will have a friend and advocate in the White House."

10:36pm - Standing ovation for the troops... (never saw that at the Dems)

10:32pm - VERY VERY STRONG feisty fighter in the opening statements!

10:29pm - LONG standing ovation... she accepts... another long ovation.

10:28pm - All eyes on Palin - the women in the building are euphoric!

10:18pm - Rudy - " When the Democrats gave up on a Iraq, they gave up on America... The Senate Leader for the Democrats said, 'This war is lost.' Well the John McCain got it right and the Senate Democrats got it wrong..."

10:16pm - Rudy - It is pretty telling but the energy issue is a lightening rod ADVANTAGE for the GOP. The "drill baby drill" crowd chants - were loud and intense!

10:13pm - Rudy - "Change is not a destination, just like hope is not a strategy!"

10:10pm - Rudy - "It's not a personal attack, Barack Obama has no experience, none, NADA!"

10:08pm - Rudy - "He couldn't figure out whether to vote yes or no... it was too tough... he voted 'present'!"

10:05pm - Rudy - "He loves America just as YOU do! But he has sacrificed for it as FEW do!"

10:03pm - Rudy - "That's right U S A!" (Hey - does ANYONE remember the Democrats EVER chanting - U S A?)

9:34pm - Huckabee - "Palin got more votes running for mayor of Wasilla Alaska than Joe Biden did running for President of the United States!"

9:34pm - Huckabee - "McCain doesn't want someone to redefine marriage!"

9:32pm - Huckabee - "I'm not a Republican because I grew up rich, I am a Republican because I did not want to spend the rest of my life waiting for the government to rescue me."

9:31pm - Huckabee - "Fact is friends most people don't want MORE government, they want less government!"

9:30pm - Huckabee: "There are some things we do NOT want to change!"

9:29pm - Huckabee: "The presidency is not an honorary job!"

9:27pm - Huckabee: "The reporting of the last few days have proven tackier than the costume change at a Madonna concert."

9:18pm - Fox is still being idiots running interviews with also rans and has beens - LAME!!!!

9:17pm "President McCain and Vice President Palin - will keep America as it has always been - the hope of the world!"

9:16pm Mitt is wooing the faithful, a well crafted speech that is evoking multiple breakouts of "USA USA USA."

The Recycled Anti-Romney Story ...
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 5:24 PM

As Allah Pundit points out, this story is nothing new.   I was on Fox talking about this exact same story back in early April.  So why has the Washington Times recycled the story?  One possibility is that the reporter (and editor) missed it the first time, but a more likely scenario is the fact that "veep" speculation is nearing apogee has made this story "newsworthy" again.

... Except it's not.  A bogus story isn't better the second time around.

Mitt Romney is not a perfect running mate pick, but reports of massive evangelical angst over his potential selection are highly suspect.  My guess is that this is not a grassroots effort, but rather merely "astroturf."  Most likely, this story is not the product of rank-and-file organic evangelical angst, but rather an invention of the Mike Huckabee forces (who, by the way, are more likely to "pitch" the story to a Washington Times reporter ...)

Sure, there might be some anti-Mormon votes out there -- but the threat that he would cost McCain 5-7 percent of the vote seems purely hysterical to me.  A more legitimate concern about Mitt Romney is his fairly recent conversion to the pro-Life cause.  But I'm suspicious that this is the rationale behind the anti-Romney forces.  After all, if they are concerned about the life issue -- as I am -- why not use their clout to focus on stopping Tom Ridge?

Romney should be considered if McCain believes he can help win states like Michigan, as well as help with the economy and fundraising.  He may -- or may not -- be a good pick.  But make no mistake; the attacks on him are not "spontaneous" ...

Romney Becoming More Likely "Veep" Pick?
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 10:33 AM
First Read reports:

"At a fundraiser in New Mexico last night, McCain cracked this joke at Romney’s expense: “I’m appreciative every time I see Mitt on television on my behalf. He does a better job for me than he did for himself as a matter of fact.” Bada bing. If McCain can start joking about someone, you know they've made it into his mental inner circle. Romney may very well be higher on the short list than anyone realizes. The biggest roadblock for many in picturing a McCain-Romney ticket is McCain getting over his personal reservations about him. But joking about him is a start."

It seems to me that Romney's chances are getting better and better every day.  Really, the only major reservation about whether or not McCain would consider Romney was whether or not McCain could warm up to him personally ...

Romney Launches New Pac
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 10:03 AM
PAC.png picture by MattLewis01

As promised, Mitt Romney is launching a new PAC.  Despite my recommendations, they have decided against either MittPac or RomPac, and settled for the rather boring (yet patriotic) title, "Free and Strong America."  Bleh.

Many former Romney loyalists will be involved in the effort.  For example, top Romney insider Peter Flaherty will reportedly serve as executive director (read my interview with Peter).

Romney to the Rescue?
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 8:07 AM
John McCain's campaign can't compete with Barack Obama's money, so he's turning to the RNC.  They, in turn, are looking to George W. Bush and Mitt Romney

From today's NYT:

... Republican officials said they were enlisting President Bush, a formidable fund-raiser who has raised more than $36 million this year for Republican candidates and committees, for three events on Mr. McCain’s behalf. They will appear together at a fund-raiser in Phoenix on May 27, and the next day the president will take part in a luncheon with Mitt Romney in Salt Lake City and then an exclusive dinner at Mr. Romney’s vacation home in Park City, Utah.
It is of interest that while Mike Huckabee continues to garner media exposure, Mitt Romney is becoming the "go-to-guy" when it comes to raising Republican money ...

Susan B. Anthony List Names Romneyites as Co-Chairs
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 8:39 AM
Politico's Shenanigans -- with the help of an unnamed conservative source -- takes a shot at Team Romney today:

Conservatives seem to be snickering over the latest Susan B. Anthony List update.  ... SBA’s No. 1 goal is to end abortion in this country.

This is why some find it highly interesting that the two new co-chairs of the SBA List are former Mitt Romney folk: Barbara Comstock and Cesar Conda. (Conda works at Navigators, the baby of GOP Svengali Mike Murphy, while Comstock has her own shop.)

Still, heads are shaking at the news — especially considering Romney’s abortion-rights past. And, even better: SBA is also holding a fundraiser ($500 a head) with who as its highlighted star of the night? Mitt Romney. “Having Romney headline a SBA event doesn’t pass the laugh test in town among real conservatives,” snickered one self-described “real conservative” who went on to ask: “Two senior Romney people in charge of the SBA? Are they trying to kill the institution?”

The Romney Reunion Last Night
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 3:10 PM
Last night, Mitt Romney hosted a campaign "reunion" in Houston.

More than 1,200 people attended -- many of whom flew into town to attend  -- leading me to believe that they believe Romney has a future.

The event was for fun and did not include official strategic meetings, though staff mingled and, no doubt, networked.

The festivities included a VIP reception (Robert Masbacher spoke at the reception) and then a Beach Boys concert.  Ann and Mitt actually danced, and at one point came up on stage and sang Barbara Ann (not the "bomb Iran" version).

Attendees included Romney top-donors and staff.  A top campaign finance chair from Houston hosted the event.

There was also a separate breakfast fundraiser this morning for McCain.  The message was simple:  Support McCain because you don't want Obama for president.

Regarding "veep' possibilities, one source told me:  "I came away with a clear impression that nobody on team Romney are under the illusion they are the favorite son of John McCain."

Mitt Hits Barack and McCain Needs Huck
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 8:35 AM
Yesterday on CNN's "The Situation Room," Mitt Romney took a shot at Barack Obama:

... "The truth of the matter is just as I said, that he doesn't have a record of accomplishments in the private sector or in the governmental sector ... hasn't pushed a major piece of legislation.

"He seems like a charming guy who's very well-spoken. But in terms of actually having led, actually having accomplished something, actually having a kind of leadership that America needs at a critical time with our economy ... he's untested. ... Frankly, Sen. McCain is someone who is tested and very proven ..."

Obama later fired back, saying this was the same kind of argument Romney had used against McCain.

Meanwhile, writing in the Buffalo News, Curt Smith makes the Huck for Veep case, arguing McCain needs Huckabee's voters:

Specifically, Huckabee would clinch what McCain aides wrongly “believe that he has already won,” the Wall Street Journal says of bornagains. Despite his recent “guns and religion” gaffe, Barack Obama could loosen such evangelical states as Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina and even Mississippi. Recently, Houston TV megachurch pastor Joel Osteen lauded Hillary Clinton for “all you’ve done for America.” Kennedy’s fire wall was LBJ. Huckabee would be McCain’s. Overnight he would make the Republicans’ largest block a GOP pro, not con.

The Jindal Factor ...
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 9:35 AM

As I noted last night, my new Politico piece focuses on Romney v. Huckabee.  My theory is that these two will meet again.  And while the piece notes that neither of the two might get the Veep nod, it does not deal with the obvious fact that if McCain wins, his V.P. would obviously have an "inside track" to the next nomination battle.

And because I wrote the piece a few days ago, it does not address Bill Kristol's column yesterday about the prospects of La governor Bobby Jindal as veep.

Obviously, if Jindal were to become Vice President, that would be a devastating blow to the hopes of both Romney and Huckabee.  Note:  I go into this making the assumption that every politician -- especially those who have run before --wants to be president.

I don't think Jindal will be picked, but you've got to bet that he will also be fighting it out with Mitt and Huck in the future ...

Veep Race: McCain/Romney Would Lose?
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 8:38 AM

John McCain and La governor Bobby Jindal.

Bill Kristol's op-ed this morning focuses on the possibility that John McCain might pick La governor Bobby Jindal as his running mate.   While that is an interesting possibility to discuss (personally, I think he needs to serve as governor for a few years), this excerpt about Mitt Romney caught my attention:

"Another McCain staffer called my attention to this finding in the latest Fox News poll: McCain led Obama in the straight match-up, 46 to 43. Voters were then asked to choose between two tickets, McCain-Romney vs. Obama-Clinton. Obama-Clinton won 47 to 41.

That reversal of a three-point McCain lead to a six-point deficit for the McCain ticket suggests what might happen (a) when the Democrats unite, and (b) if McCain were to choose a conventional running mate, who, as it were, reinforced the Republican brand for the ticket. As the McCain aide put it, this is what will happen if we run a traditional campaign; our numbers will gradually regress toward the (losing) generic Republican number."

Kristol admits this scenario depends on Obama being the nominee.  I might also add that this scenario assumes Obama would pick Hillary; he wouldn't.  Still, this serves as a bit of a blow to those who are hoping for a McCain/Romney ticket.

It is also interesting to note that it was McCain staffers who reportedly brought this to Kristols' attention ...

Update:  Check out my new Politico column on Romney v. Huckabee.

Fred Returns for McCain
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 10:20 AM
Fred's back on the trail:
In recent weeks, McCain has campaigned with both Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee. While there was a lot of VP buzz when the AZ Senator was joined by Romney and Huckabee, expect a lot less around Fred—the former TN Senator even told Fox News last week that a number 2 slot is “not in the cards.”
