So what does it mean if pollsters on opposite ends of the spectrum agree?

HUCKABEE

Please show me how Public Policy Polling and Rasmussen can both come to the same conclusion unless there is a legit validity to what they are asking about.

I've long lauded the Rasmussen polls as the most accurate. They have more sophistication, better methods, and deeper/more well balanced penetration into the masses.

Last week they had Huck up 29% to Romney at 24% and Palin at 18%.

Tonight PPP puts Huck within the margin of error against OBAMA.

This is the seventh time PPP has taken this poll. It is the seventh straight time Huckabee has polled closest to Obama.

In a brief stop-over into the Ed Morrissey chat room at HotAir today, Duane Patterson and other chatters denounced Huck as irrelevant.

I was the first person to tell you that Huckabee will be the nominee for the GOP and I told it to you months ago. I might add that I was the first person to tell you Obama would be President, predicting that would happen in December of 2006.

Huckabee has done several things right since 2008, and made very few mistakes. His commentary on Fox is the textbook definition of "statesman." His ratings hit on Fox News Channel has made him the most watched cable news show every weekend.

His willingness to bring liberals on his show and debate them sometimes two to four liberals against himself shows tremendous stamina and strength. His sense of humor and his ability to finally brand his positions for himself, (and not through the lens of slime in Camp Romney that distorted his positions, fed them to NRO--who then repeated them without question,) are all playing to his strength. He also didn't implement a mandatory Health Care System in his state that allows for $50 abortions.

I know Hugh Hewitt opposes the Fair Tax message, but it is a less discriminatory tax than the present system. And in opposition to Obama arrogance, Huck's greatest strength--humility will be a winsome combination.

Duane and others all laughed at me when I told them Barack Obama would be President. They are laughing at me again now.

But maybe I know "we the people" a little bit better than they do. And all the signals I see developing point to an anti-tax candidate doing best. Huck is that candidate at present, and he's even better on other dozens of positions he's staked out on his television show.

Keep underestimating him people. Keep believing all the "smart people."

I put my faith in the ability of the American people...

The Perils of Socialized Medicine
Posted by: John Campbell at 12:11 PM
Regular readers know that I am a numbers, financial, and economic guy, as betrayed by my CPA certification. As important as these issues are, we are now presented with an issue even more vital. The socialized healthcare bill being considered by the House will likely result in tens of millions of Americans dying sooner than they otherwise would have to.

When the free-market, doctors, and patients are taken out of health care decisions, and the care is paid for by somebody else, the establishment of an organization to ration care is inevitable.  In fact, the legislation creates the National Institute of Comparative Effectiveness. As benign as it may sound, this is the bureaucracy that will be used to ration care. A similar institution exists in Britain, and has the rather ominous acronym of NICE (National Institute for Health and Clinical Experience).  Rulings on whether people live or die are made frequently in Britain and Canada, and if you have a pre-existing condition, are elderly, or for some reason deemed ‘unfit’ for a life saving procedure, then your chances of being granted that life saving procedure become even murkier. Your life will hang in the balance, subject to the whims of government and its bureaucrats. This is why the survival rates from cancer, heart disease, and many other life-threatening diseases are 30-50% lower in countries with socialized medicine than they are in countries with private medicine.

And why are we doing this? It is generally accepted that about 85% of Americans have some form of health insurance. But, 15% do not. Of the 15% that do not, about one third have plenty of income and wealth, but choose not to buy insurance because they think they are healthy and want to save the money, and if they have a problem they will just go to the emergency room. Another third are eligible for Medicaid or Medicare or other subsidized care, but have not signed up. Only that last third, or 5% of the population, are truly uninsured, want insurance, and have no realistic option to get it.

Without question, there is a problem with which we must deal. But we should not sacrifice the quality of care and the life expectancy of 95% of the population for 5% as the Obama/Pelosi plan does. Furthermore, their plan fails to cover that 5%.

The Democrats in the House are practically at war amongst themselves over this because their more moderate members see the folly in socialized medicine. As I left the Capitol earlier today, the final committee with jurisdiction on this bill, Energy and Commerce, still had not met to vote on the bill. Committee Chairman Henry Waxman (D-CA) suggested that maybe his committee should just be bypassed if the votes to pass the bill weren’t there. That, is truly desperation.

They know how powerful a message it is. Democrats, led by Nancy Pelosi are so nervous that the public might find out what is really in this health care proposal that they have taken the unprecedented step of trying to use the rules of the House to censor the minority, and restrict what we are allowed to say or send out to you. In other words, they want to limit the only real power the loyal minority has, which is the power to communicate criticisms of the majority's proposals and present alternatives. Among the items to which they have objected to is the chart shown below. They have not been able to say that this chart, which reflects the organization of the Obama/Pelosi Health Care bill, is inaccurate. They say that some of the descriptions of the agencies are "misleading." Right. If you want to see misleading, read my blog on the 10 "inaccuracies" in President Obama’s news conference last week.

The Greeneyeshade Blog - Obama Misleads us on Healthcare

Your government run health care system will look like this if this bill passes. The Speaker and her minions just don't want you to know it.

John Locke must be rolling in his grave. This socialized medicine package is a leap in a direction to which the government will now view its citizens as liabilities. This is in a republic that was founded on the premise that the government derives its power from the ‘consent of the governed.’ If this bill passes, perhaps we should change that to ‘consent of the governed, unless they represent too high of a liability.’

I admit, I am little worked up about this. But darn it, it's really important.

Joe the Republican
Posted by: Ericka Andersen at 1:19 PM
There was a bit of an uproar when "Joe the Plumber" (aka Samuel Wurzelbacher) became a short-term war correspondent for Pajamas Media last month. Journalists were offended and liberals were amused.  While the stint didn't generate any monumental news coverage, Pajamas stood by their guy and he apparently impressed Republican members of Congress.

Joe joined members of the Conservative Working Group yesterday morning for a closed door meeting of Republican Congressional aides. From reporter to political strategist without an ounce of experience in either field -- is this really a good idea? It isn't something to make a habit of but Joe's "regular guy" opinion injected into influential Washington circles may be a breath of fresh air for those suffocating in Beltway talking points.

“I don’t believe there’s two sides to every story. It’s black and white...There’s right and wrong,” Joe said recently.

His antecdotes are often simple but emanate the common sense kind of thinking often loss in policy debates and confusing legislation so removed from the American people.

The NY Daily News wonders if a run for political office is in Joe's future while the Huffington Post blares the following quote: "I don't know if the American public deserves me." That could be easily misconstrued. Either way, Joe represents the people for now -- without the stigma of political promises to keep --  and it doesn't hurt anyone to listen. Here he is on Pajamas TV.

GOP Tuesday Target Ads
Posted by: Ericka Andersen at 7:40 PM
Liberal interest groups spent nearly $600,000 to convince Republican senators that they should back the Democrats' $900 billion economic stimulus package. The way numbers are flying around these days, this half a mil (and then some) probably sounds like chump change. Sens. Kit Bond (Mo.) and Richard Lugar (Ind.) , Sens. Jim Bunning (Ky.), Richard Burr (N.C.), and Mel Martinez (Fla.) are targets for the ads.

Groups involved include Americans United for Change, Moveon.org, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees and the Service Employees International Union. Yahoo reports this is actually part of a $5 million effort by the Campaign for Jobs and Economic Recovery, which seems a bit rash.

The TV ad reportedly features President Obama discussing the creation of jobs and economic recovery in the making if the stimulus passes. Fox News reports specific targets Sens. Susan Collins, R-Maine; Olympia Snowe, R-Maine; Judd Gregg, R-N.H.; Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska and Charles Grassley, R-Iowa.

After the stimulus bill passed the House, with zero Republican support, speculation is heavy on whether or not Senate Republicans will follow suite. Reports indicate it will not pass without significant changes.

Only two Republican votes are needed to "clear possible procedural roadblocks" at this point in the Senate and its unclear whether or not this massive ad campaign will sway GOP leaders who don’t wish to be alienated from the Party.  With items like $75 million toward smoking prevention programs and $50 million to promote the arts, how are almost all the Democrats in favor of this irresponsible piece of legislation?

On another note, Chris Cillizza wonders if Obama will allow liberal interest groups to become a major part of his messaging in the future? This may be the first clue.

UPDATE:

Senior White House advisers are quietly beginning to put a system in place to ensure coordination between the White House and outside liberal groups and unions that are ramping up to push the Obama administration’s agenda and target its foes, a senior Dem operative who regularly advises the White House and is involved in these discussions tells me.

The operation, which is in its early stages, is expected to be overseen by senior Obama hand Valerie Jarrett, the senior Dem says, and Jarrett is playing a key role in assembling it, though other senior Obama advisers will also play a role.

"My Country SAVED me, and I will never forget it, and I will fight for her, as long as I draw breath so help me God!"
Posted by: Kevin McCullough at 12:35 AM

"LIVE" from "the Night!"

Big night here for the MuscleHeads... Faith will be speaking with MTV through the night, Baldwin is wandering around St. Paul somewhere, and the live blogging that we've been pleased to offer you for every night - of both conventions continues here...

AND here's your chance to be part of it - as we introduce the largest live group blog ever. Here's how it works:

During the night tonight if you wish to contact me through facebook chat or through my IM screen name (RadioKMC on AIM) just shoot me a thought. If your observations are not laced with profanity - they will end up here on the LIVE Blog tonight.

So grab your laptop and let's get started...

11:25pm - Colleen: "Right on! McCain is self-less unlike Obama who is full of himself! McCain seeks the best for the country, while Obama seeks the best for his campaign! What a speech McCain gave - he took the high road, encouraging Americans to make this a better place and saying that he would rather lose an election than lose a war. McCain's the ultimate American war hero and patriot, indebted to his country and countrymen who saved his life, saying he finally found a cause greater than himself - his country - meanwhile Obama's wife disparages America by saying the first time she was ever proud of America was when her husband ran for President! There is simply no contest."

11:05pm - Michelle: "Character, honor and integrity oozes from this simple man?s speech..."

11:04pm - John McCain: "We don't hide from history, we make history!"

11:03pm - Michelle: "This Man...He just talks to your heart...THIS IS EXPERIENCE...THIS IS WISDOM...TRUE HUMILITY...He is making me cry. His speech is much more substantial that that polished one we heard from Obama. McCain/Palin the David in the David versus Goliath story."

11:02pm - John McCain: "NOTHING brings greater happiness in life than to serve a cause greater than yourself!"

11:01pm - John McCain: "My country saved me, and I can not forget it, and I will fight for her, as long as I draw breath so help me God!"

11:00pm - John McCain: "I wasn't my own man anymore - I was my country's!"

10:59pm - Elaine: "What an honorable man and a Hero!"

10:58pm - John McCain: "But I TURNED it DOWN!"

10:56pm - John McCain: "I didn't FEEL so tough anymore... I was beginning to learn the limits of my independence... those men saved my life!"

10:55pm - John McCain: "I've been an imperfect servant of my country but a servant I have been past, present, and always... and I thank God for privilege."

10:54pm - John McCain: "Instead of fighting over who gets the credit, let's share it."

10:53pm - John McCain: "I have that record and the scars to prove it (of reaching across the isle)... Senator Obama does not!"

10:52pm - John McCain: "We have to catch up to history, and we have to change the way we do business in Washington."

10:51pm - John McCain: "I will draw on all my resources, and do all I can for a stable and enduring peace!"

10:51pm - Michelle: "McCain just hit it in the head. The key difference between him and Obama: HE IS PREPARED."

10:50pm - Elaine: "He is really talking like a President. He is prepared to be the leader of the Free World."

10:49pm - John McCain: "We have many grave threats in this world, but I'm not afraid of them... I'm prepared for them!"

10:48pm - John McCain: "The brave people of Georgia need our solidarity and our prayers. We can't turn a blind eye to aggression..."

10:44pm - John McCain: "We're gonna stop sending 700 billion dollars a year to countries that don't like us very much, we'll attack the problem on every front, we'll drill here and we'll drill NOW! We'll build more nuclear power plants, we'll encourage the use of flex-fuel and hybrid..."

10:44pm - John McCain: "I WANT schools to answer to parents and students... and when I'm president they will!"

10:43pm - Elaine: "He is hitting every major talking point of every major issue that America is concerned about today. Amen to helping bad teachers find another line of work."

10:41pm - John McCain: "Education is the civil rights issue of this century! Equal access to a public education has been gained. But what does it profit you to an equal access to a failing school!"

10:38pm - Elaine: "compare and contrasts good for America to hear..."

10:37pm - John McCain: "We believe in letting people keep the fruits of their labors... We believe in a culture of life... Personal Responsibility, Rule of Law, and Judges who judge impartially and do not legislate from the bench!"

10:36pm - KMC: Back to basics... best call all night!

10:35pm - John McCain: "We lost their trust! And rather than reform Government - both parties made it bigger. We lost their trust, when we valued our power over our principles!"

10:34pm - Michelle: "'what you fight for is the real test.' Now that is REAL talk ? la McCain the Maverick!"

10:33pm - John McCain: "What you fight for is the true test!"

10:32pm - Elaine: "His kind of strength, His Kind of wisdom His kind of backbone is what we need in the White House."

10:31pm - John McCain: "I fought for a different strategy and more troops in Iraq when it wasn't the thing to do! And when the pundits said my campaign was finished, I said, 'I'd rather lose an election than to see my country lose a war'!"

10:30pm - John McCain: "I will make them famous - and YOU will know their names!"

10:22pm - KMC: "Being an American, is the most precious affiliation..."

10:19pm - Marcus: "if i'm mccain, i'd stay away from a backdrop that features green ... it didn't work well for him last time around."

10:18pm - Democrat protestors break into the convention - CLASSY!

10:14pm - KMC: I count my blessings every time I see McCain reach his hand upwards!

10:13pm - Elaine: "God Bless John McCain!"

10:08pm - Elisa: "More to Life than Self words to live by..."

10:07pm - Alyssa: "I WANT to be Sarah Palin..."

10:04pm - JoAnn: "Is finally excited about this election. I LOVE Sarah Palin!"

10:00pm - Michelle: "YES, "WE EARNED OUR WEALTH" just like the Obama?s. Not all Republicans are born with silver spoon. I hope that the Maverick/Barracuda ticket convey a lot of that message because the Dems use that as a classic argument. Bogus!"

9:58pm - James: "I hope McCain is kidding when he says he'll ask to tone down the partisan rancor...the rancor is so much fun... Today...CBS says race is tied. Prediction for tomorrow...Rasmussen has McCain/Palin up 5...

9:55pm - Michelle: "Amazing! Cindy McCain just mentioned Rwanda. The one thing that Clinton regret helping...and look...Cindy helped. I hope the people remember how Clinton failed this part of his foreign policy. Take a good look. This woman and Sarah Palin did more than Michelle Obama. What did Biden?s wife do? I don?t even remember"

9:54pm - Ken: "Palin's going to make a GREAT VP!"

9:53pm - Joy: "I think a candidate should be voted for based on qualifications... not smooth tongue, and slick words... been there, done that... enough of that."

9:51pm - Eric: "Palin's TV ratings match Obama's with four less networks covering it!"

9:42pm - Elisa: "I loved the movie Mrs McCain is something else!"

9:39pm - Cindy McCain: "If only the federal government would get themselves under control, and OUT of our way!"

9:38pm - Michelle: "Cindy is tough woman who is not afraid to roll up her sleeves. I cannot believe how these Liberals pick on her suit last night, whom I think she paid with their hard earned money (she has Masters!). That is why we are Republicans! We dream big and do big things! It doesn?t mean we do not know how to connect to those who earn less. Man, what is wrong with us? Ageism, Sexism and then Envy! Why can?t we just be happy for people who want to make a difference regardless of the package?!"

9:47pm - Cindy McCain: "I think John was a HERO!" (crowd goes nuts!)

9:37pm - Cindy McCain: "Nothing has brought me more joy than that of being a mother!"

9:34pm - KMC: I'm loving these tribute videos to the women of the campaign - the ones to Sarah Palin was so good, and the one to future first lady Cindy was equally touching. Talented, accomplished - and sooo compassionate... things you would not learn otherwise!

9:31pm - Michelle: "you know, these commentators keep harping on how much we know about this and that about McCain...some of us who are in international waters, or younger generation...do not know all the details about McCain (or even Cindy)."

9:07pm - Lindsay Graham: "If Barak Obama can not appreciate the fact that our troops are winning in Iraq, he shouldn't be their commander in chief.

A Baby Story
Posted by: Faith Ammen at 12:47 AM
http://www.sawf.org/Newsphotos/Entertainment/SarahPalinFamily28Aug08.jpg

Since I already gave my response to the story of Bristol Palin's unborn child to MTV and CNN today, I thought I should share it with you too.

This story proves once again that Sarah Palin is not pontificating from a moral high ground when it comes to issues of family. From not aborting her own Down Syndrome child to supporting her daughter, Palin has proved that her position is more than a talking point. Palin, unlike many politicians, can navigate the tension between her policy decisions and the reality of life. Obama would see this incident in his daughters as a mistake only reversed by an immediate abortion. There would not be the willingness to engage in sacrifice and unconditional love.

An abortion divorces the emotional side from the physical act. It claims that all consequences can be glossed over with a medical procedure that rips a living child from it's mother's womb. It claims that we can fragment our lives into managable compartments without facing the real emotional and psychological repercussions that accompany pregnancy.

As I mentioned in my previous post, I spent this morning hanging out with the Minnesota delegation in the lobby of the Hilton. One of the people I met was a 16 year old girl who became a new mom four weeks ago. I got to hold her tiny baby and feel, as Sarah Palin feels towards her daughter, that no child is unwanted and that views on life don't change when reality gets hard.

(FINALLY) Rasmussen's LATEST: A GOP frontrunner emerges...
Posted by: Kevin McCullough at 1:45 PM

"Decisive Lead Amongst Conservatives!"

According to the newest Rasmussen numbers Mitt Romney now leads the GOP race for the nomination - NATIONALLY, and is up 15 points amongst "conservatives." McCain leads amongst moderates - but most of the primary races here on out are closed races which will diminish moderate/independent turnout for the GOP race.

Mitt's strategy, though it hit a sizable speed bumps in Iowa AND New Hampshire, is on the verge of complete fruition. The singularly important task ahead of him being - to win Florida.

If McCain loses Florida, though he will be around to make more noise, he will be all but finished. It Mitt wins, he must still compete heavily on Tsunami Tuesday, but he will be in position to raise additional money to complete his war chest.

Huckabee's loss in South Carolina appears to have been his ultimate undoing, which in all reality could be blamed easily enough on Thompson given the similarity in the exit poll responses from Thompson and Huckabee's supporters. Had Thompson not been in the race, Huckabee would have easily defeated McCain by a wide margin (perhaps 10%).

Now that McCain, who traditionally only wins "open" primaries, is faced with convincing the conservative base of the GOP primary voters that he isn't the wild, undisciplined, arrogant, half-crazed, tempest in a teapot he has been for the last eight years. But the track record is long.

And when you associate your name with more legislation (McCain/Feingold, McCain/Kennedy, McCain/Lieberman) with your opponent's co-signature's than from your own party's there's bound to be backlash. Even in this election cycle it appears that while McCain says ONE THING about border security, the staffing of his campaign advisers tells a VERY different story.

A good boxing of the ears in Florida and Senator Cranky can finally put the "running for president" demons to rest, and just focus on enjoying the remainder of his time in the Senate and with his wife and family...

"You're Fired!"

Hadn't thought about this... but those two little words definitely mean something new to me now... HA!

So what do you do when the Lovely Bride wants the DVR to catch the new CSI, the South Carolina GOP Debate is on, or your pal is trying to survive Celebrity Apprentice with GENE SIMMONS as the project manager.

And it's a very good week for Stephen - he gets to direct the "commercial."

But the Bible has some messages that are not left up to interpretation, and until we get the real simple things right, we don't need to argue about the things that are more complex". BECAUSE THE BIBLE IS THE REVELATION OF AN INFINITE GOD AND NO HUMAN CAN FULLY UNDERSTAND HIM, AND IF THEY CAN - THEIR GOD IS TOO SMALL!

9:15pm - Tancredo, "I pander to Jesus in the shadow of Huck!"

9:13pm - Huckabee, "Death Penalty, what would Jesus do... toughest thing I've ever had to do. I read every page of every case of every decision I was asked to decide. I believe there is a place for the death penalty - some crimes are SO heinous. Some crimes are beyond any other capacity for us to fix. 'Jesus was too smart to ever run for public office.'"

9:11pm - Rudy, "Ban on all abortions, Would not sign". Romney, "Would welcome a circumstance to ban all abortion, and I would be delighted to sign that bill".

9:10pm - Fred, "Abortion becoming illegal should be our number one focus, and that means new justices on the bench of the Supreme Court. Most states have laws that prevent abortion after viability - that same pattern should be followed to punish doctors..."

9:08pm - Paul, "Get the federal government OUT of abortion... I don't think that the woman should be charged with a crime. I'm an OBGYN and I never saw a time when an abortion needed to be performed medically speaking..."

9:07pm - Rudy, "Romney has a mixed record... I have reduced crime in Harlem by 80%. The city of New York was one of the most dangerous places in the country."

9:05pm - Romney, "Best thing you can do for a kid is give them a mom and a dad. And it's time to go back into this country to the time of values. Family values... Better education - civil rights issue of our time - education... tough laws related to being touch on crime... violent crime in my state dropped 7%."

9:04pm - Gun collections - Fred "not telling where they are", McCain "I don't own one now", Hunter "Gun just like my Dad's", Romney "I have two guns in my home - owned by my son Josh, chessy laugh included..."

9:02pm - Fred, "The Mayor never found a gun control law that he didn't sign... Hopefully the Supreme Court will uphold the ruling in the DC case..."

8:58pm - Rudy, "We have to be very aggressive about enforcing the gun laws that already exist. We reduced shooting 74%. We went from being one of the most dangerous cities to one of the safest. Government CAN impose reasonable regulations.(BOOOOOOOOOS) New York can have stricter rules than Texas, and the Supreme Court will decide this in the next six months. I will live by that. I'm not going to interfere with that."

8:57pm - Hunter, "You should never throw a gun, you gotta be safe with guns Jay. But the right to bear arms is important to national, home, and personal security!"

8:54pm - Huckabee, "I cut 90 taxes... 'When they're kicking you in the rear, they're just proving that you're still out front!"

8:53pm - Romney, "On Abortion I was wrong... this happened when I was Governor, I could not sign a bill that destroyed life. I'm not going to apologize to people for becoming pro-life."

8:52pm - Fred, "Giving my buddies a lil extra air time..."

8:51pm - Hunter, "it's in our best interest to see to it that China stops its cheating, they are arming themselves... BUY AMERICAN this Christmas season..."

8:50pm - Tancredo, "It's already illegal to import lead based items..."

8:48pm - Rudy, "Are the politico accusations true? No! I had nothing to do with the handling of the records..."

8:46pm - Romney, "Corn subsidies... some renewable fuel, we're competing with HEAVILY subsidized nations...Open markets..."

8:43pm - Tancredo - "Yes to Grover", Huckabee "Yes", Romney - "Yes", Rudy "Yes", Fred "Yes", McCain "My Pledge is up to the American people...", Paul "have to cut spending...", Hunter "It would be wrong to pledge in light of nationa emergencies..."

8:43pm - Paul, "McCain doesn't understand Isolationism or crackpotism..."

8:41pm - McCain, "Crackpot's Isolation brought about WWII! I just finished having thanksgiving with the troops - and their message is 'Let Us Win!"

8:39pm - Huckabee, "Get RID of the IRS... and install the Fair Tax. Revamp Homeland Security...Most people are more afraid of an audit than a mugging and there's a reason why..."

8:39pm - Paul, "Washington did not change me... and I'm still a crack pot!"

8:38pm - Fred, "I would eliminate the OMB's top 100 programs, not 3..."

8:36pm - Rudy, "Don't rehire half the federal workforce that retires over the next ten years..."

8:35pm - Romney, "We've got to veto pork bills, but we have to fundamentally change the way Washington works. We're going to have to go after entitlements, and veto all spending increases..."

8:34pm - McCain, "Republicans have completely lost  control of spending, we study the DNA of bears, we're going to help kids with health care by encouraging them to continue to smoke..."

8:32pm - Paul, "I'm a complete crackpot, and UN Resolutions, and I'm a crackpot..."

8:30pm - Romney, "The question is are we going to put illegal kids ahead of kids who are here legally...

8:29pm - Huckabee, "We're a better country than to punish children for what their parents did..."

8:28pm - Romney, "Mike just said that he gave scholarships for illegal aliens. But its not your money, its the tax-payers money! Illegals should not get tax-payer breaks."

8:27pm - Huckabee, "We never passed a bill that gave special priviledges of illegal aliens the chance to get a discount in tuition. And it didn't pass... This bill would've said that we would not punish a child for a crime committed by your parent! Bring people from illegal status to legal. And take people from tax-takers to tax-payers! Veterans Bill of Rights!"

8:25pm - Hunter, "I built the border fence in San Diego and it DOES work. Double border fence with the road in between, and as a result the crime rate in San Diego went down 53%. I wrote the law that mandates 854 miles of fence, and the government has not built an inch of that fence!"

8:24pm - Tancredo, "I'm not going to do anything to push MASSIVE immigration legal or illegal... THERE ARE NO JOBS that an American won't do."

8:22pm - Tancredo, "It's wonderful to hear them out Tancredo, Tancredo..."

8:21pm - McCain, "We tried to endorse the borders, the people don't believe us..." "These are God's children as well, and they need rights and protections as well..."

8:19pm - Rudy, "New York City was NOT a Sanctuary city..."

8:16pm - Fred, "I pledge to refuse amnesty to ANYONE who comes here illegally... We have thousands of people who are waiting to come here... we now get to decide who comes in our home. We've got to strengthen the border and we've got to eliminate Sanctuary cities... Fred goes after Romney AND Rudy early... not a bad thing... "Rudy DID have a sanctuary city, the Mayor went to court to overturn it."

8:15pm - Mitt to Rudy, "Are you going to check papers of those who look a little different!"

8:10pm - Rudy Giuliani, "New York was NOT a sanctuary city..."

This is Your Elephant on Drugs

It was a rough week out in Minneapolis. Everyone knew that after a run of extraordinary electoral success from 2000-2006, their favorite Republican icon had crashed under the psychic weight of the '06 defeat, but no one knew how far the pachyderm had truly fallen...

...Until he showed up to the 2008 Republican Convention photo shoot.  According to sources, the face of the GOP was "completely out of it" and made frequent trips to the bathroom during the shoot. His mood, we're told, was extremely erratic. Our on-set spy tells us he ordered fried chicken at one point, later wiping his dirty tusks clean with his custom-made wardrobe, costing the party thousands of dollars, and trampling at least one volunteer underfoot in a postprandial attack.

The troubled mascot's agent  would not comment except to promise a really awesome comeback in 2008, perhaps at the MTV Music Awards.

But seriously, who decided to make the GOP Convention elephant look high and extremely threatening?

In other news, the Democratic Party's mascot was too enthusiastic about that famed Colorado kind bud to even show up for a shoot:

DOBSON: No Rudy, Christian Leaders UNITED not fractured!
Posted by: Kevin McCullough at 10:08 AM

Thanks to Matt's exclusives here at TownHall we heard from Mr. Viguerie earlier this week. I will have an exclusive with the Family Research Council's Dr. Tony Perkins today on the broadcast. But this morning Dr. James Dobson broke his silence on the message coming to the candidates from this past weekend's "Council for National Policy's" national meetings:

Two themes emerged. BEAT RUDY in the primary:

After two hours of deliberation, we voted on a resolution that can be summarized as follows: If neither of the two major political parties nominates an individual who pledges himself or herself to the sanctity of human life, we will join others in voting for a minor-party candidate. Those agreeing with the proposition were invited to stand. The result was almost unanimous.

The other issue discussed at length concerned the advisability of creating a third party if Democrats and Republicans do indeed abandon the sanctity of human life and other traditional family values. Though there was some support for the proposal, no consensus emerged.

Speaking personally, and not for the organization I represent or the other leaders gathered in Salt Lake City, I firmly believe that the selection of a president should begin with a recommitment to traditional moral values and beliefs. Those include the sanctity of human life, the institution of marriage, and other inviolable pro-family principles. Only after that determination is made can the acceptability of a nominee be assessed.

And the other... CHRISTIAN LEADERS ARE AS UNITED AS EVER.

One other clarification is germane, even though unrelated to the meeting in Salt Lake City. The secular news media has been reporting in recent months that the conservative Christian movement is hopelessly fractured and internally antagonistic. The Los Angeles Times reported on Monday, for example, that supporters of traditional family values are rapidly “splintering.” That is not true. The near unanimity in Salt Lake City is evidence of much greater harmony than supposed. Admittedly, differences of opinion exist among us about our choices for president.

That divergence is entirely reasonable, now just over a year before the national election. It is hardly indicative of a “splintering” of old alliances. If the major political parties decide to abandon conservative principles, the cohesion of pro-family advocates will be all too apparent in 2008.
