Read Her Lips: You'll Pay For Abortions
Posted by: Jillian Bandes at 10:47 AM
A quote from Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius, in an interview with BlogHer:
The Senate language, which was negotiated by Senators Barbara Boxer and Patty Murray, who are very strong defenders of women's health services and choices for women, take a big step forward from where the House left it with the Stupak amendment. Everybody in the exchange would do the same thing, whether you're male or female, whether you're 75 or 25, you would all set aside a portion of your premium that would go into a fund, and it will not be earmarked for anything, it would be a separate account that everyone in the exchange would pay. It's really an accounting measure that would apply across the board and not just to women and certainly not just to women who want to choose abortion coverage.

Lots More To Come . . .
Posted by: Carol Platt Liebau at 10:06 AM
2009 has been a tough year for those of us who love economic and individual liberty.  But the Democrats have succeeded in awakening a sleeping giant --  regular Americans, who may occasionally take their freedom for granted, but don't intend to let it be taken away.  Ever.

Christmas Day Terrorist Had Enough Explosives To Take Down The Plane
Posted by: Jillian Bandes at 9:39 AM
Initial reports didn't provide details about failed terrorist Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab's explosives. News today revealed that he was carrying pentaerythritol tetranitrate, or PETN, a powerful substance that would've been enough to blow up Northwest Airlines Flight 253. That's the same stuff failed shoe bomber Richard Reid  tried to detonate on an American Airlines flight in 2001. If Reid, or Abdulmutallab, had been successful, the planes could have been taken down.

Here's the scary report from the New York Times:
Some passengers aboard Flight 253 said they heard popping noises similar to firecrackers, smelled a burning odor and observed Mr. Abdulmutallab’s pants leg and a wall of the airplane on fire. Passengers and crew members subdued Mr. Abdulmutallab and used blankets and fire extinguishers to put out the flames, according to the criminal complaint.

Nigerian Aboard Same Delta Flight On Sunday Stays In Bathroom Too Long, Raises Suspicions
Posted by: Jillian Bandes at 9:25 AM
Jittery nerves led to a false alarm on Sunday, when another Nigerian aboard the same Delta-Northwest flight from Amsterdam to Detroit stayed in the bathroom for twenty minutes during the last hour of the flight, after crew members had instructed passengers to remain seated. He was apparently suffering from a bad case of nausea, and refused to open the bathroom door when crew members repeatedly knocked.

Here's the group think that allowed the passengers to stay calm:
Passengers apparently saw no cause for concern until the man got up to go to the bathroom after crew members told passengers to stay in their seats for the last hour of the flight. Witnesses said people seemed more concerned that somebody was defying crew orders, not that the man seemed suspicious.
Passengers were evacuated after the plan touched down, but FBI officials quickly ruled out any possibility of foul play.

Shocking Claim: Would-Be Detroit Bomber Received Help Boarding Flight Without Passport
Posted by: Meredith Jessup at 8:46 AM
The latest news out of Michigan today may indeed confirm the would-be Detroit flight bomber, Umar Farouk Abdul Mutallab, had some help in boarding a flight to America--and that he may not have even needed a valid passport to do so:
Kurt Haskell of Newport, Mich., [talked] exclusively with MLive.com and confirmed he was on the flight by sending a picture of his boarding pass. He and his wife, Lori, were returning from a safari in Uganda when they boarded the NWA flight on Friday.

Haskell said he and his wife were sitting on the ground near their boarding gate in Amsterdam, which is when they saw Mutallab approach the gate with an unidentified man.

Kurt and Lori Haskell are attorneys with Haskell Law Firm in Taylor. Their expertise includes bankruptcy, family law and estate planning.

While Mutallab was poorly dressed, his friend was dressed in an expensive suit, Haskell said. He says the suited man asked ticket agents whether Mutallab could board without a passport. “The guy said, 'He's from Sudan and we do this all the time.'”

Mutallab is Nigerian. Haskell believes the man may have been trying to garner sympathy for Mutallab's lack of documents by portraying him as a Sudanese refugee.

What Counts as a Warning?
Posted by: Carol Platt Liebau at 4:31 PM
Remember when the left was up in arms about how President Bush was supposedly "warned" about 9/11?

It's always struck me as silly -- and more than a little unfair -- to expect any administration to be "warned" about a potential attack if it's just part of a list of thousands of potential problems.

That being said, given the 9/11 experience, wouldn't it be reasonable to expect that, if a man's own father warned the US about him and his intentions, that the potential troublemaker would at least make it onto a "no fly" list?

Or was the Obama administration too concerned about "labeling" someone a terrorist?

Most unbelievable of all, the Homeland Security secretary is claiming that "the system worked" -- although the plane was saved by the terrorist's bomb failing to detonate, not because of anything the US government did.  Reading the terrorist his Miranda rights doesn't count as the system "working," Madame Secretary.  Hoping that future terrorists will simply be incompetent bomb-makers is not a policy.

Merry Christmas
Posted by: Carol Platt Liebau at 11:37 PM
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow said it beautifully:

Then pealed the bells more loud and deep:
"God is not dead; nor doth he sleep!
The Wrong shall fail,
The Right prevail,
With peace on earth, good-will to men!"

Merry Christmas to all.  God bless us every one.

Authorities Say Terrorism To Blame For Christmas Plane Bombing In Detroit
Posted by: Jillian Bandes at 8:17 PM
An Al-Qaeda sympathizer claimed responsibility for an explosion aboard a Delta-Northwest flight that arrived safely in Detroit this afternoon, after departing from Amsterdam. The suspect was taken into custody, and all passengers are safe.

Delta Flight 253 was carrying 278 people, and President Obama immediately ordered additional security measures in all of the nation's airports. The attacker was reportedly a Nigerian citizen, and claimed allegiance to Al-Quaeda.

He ignited a "powdery substance" after it arrived in the terminal. He and several passengers were reportedly injured, but the extent of injuries is unknown. Passengers believed the explosives were firecrackers, at first.

Here is Delta's statement, via NPR:
Upon approach to Detroit, a passenger caused a disturbance onboard Northwest Airlines Flight 253. The passenger was subdued immediately and the crew requested that law enforcement meet the flight upon arrival. The flight, operated by Northwest using an Airbus 330-300 aircraft with 278 passengers onboard, landed safely. The passenger was taken into custody and questioned by law enforcement authorities. Delta is cooperating fully with authorities and additional questions should be directed to law enforcement officials who are leading the investigation.
The suspect is also rumored to be on a no-fly list.

Second Time Is A Charm For Pope Attacker
Posted by: Jillian Bandes at 8:04 PM
The woman who pounced on Pope Benedict XVI during Christmas Eve mass tried the same thing last year. No reasons were given for the repeat attacks, but Susanna Maiolo, 25, who had both Swiss and Italian, has a history of mental problems. This year, she managed to topple the Pope, 82, as well as a French cardinal, Roger Etchegaray, 87.

This Christmas, 78% of Americans Identify as Christian
Posted by: Jillian Bandes at 2:33 PM
78% of Americans identify as Christian in some way. That percentage has been on the decline for the past few decades, mostly due to the fact that more and more Americans are claiming no religious identity.

Pope Benedict XVI Attacked During Christmas Eve Mass
Posted by: Jillian Bandes at 7:23 PM
From the AP:
A woman jumped the barriers in St. Peter's Basilica and knocked down Pope Benedict XVI as he walked down the main aisle to begin Christmas Eve Mass on Thursday.

The 82-year-old pope quickly got up and was unhurt, said a Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Ciro Benedettini. Footage aired on Italy's RAI state TV showed a woman dressed in a red jumper vaulting over the wooden barriers and rushing the pope before being swarmed by bodyguards.

The commotion occurred as the pope's procession was making its way toward the main altar and shocked gasps rang out through the public that packed the basilica. The procession came to a halt and security rushed to the trouble spot.

Benedettini said the woman who pushed the pope appeared to be mentally unstable and had been arrested by Vatican police. He said she also knocked down Cardinal Roger Etchegaray, who was taken to hospital for a check up.
