More on BPA
Posted by: Dwayne Horner at 3:06 PM

In July, I wrote a blog on TownHall.com about Bisphenol A (BPA) in which I brought to your attention the behavior of many major media outlets with regard to their accusations against BPA, which is a chemical used to make lightweight, versatile, durable, high-performance plastics. In that piece I identified that contrary to those that claim that BPA is dangerous and hazardous to all, new research was telling an opposite story:

… After years of hand-wringing, biased media reports and witch hunts about BPA -- a new Statistical Assessment Service (STATS) report out of George Mason University (a non profit, non partisan group) has found that the risks were misleading and caused unnecessary public anxiety.

As the report noted,  "A handful of scientists and environmental activist groups claim that bisphenol A is the biological equivalent of global warming, and its presence in plastic bottles and can linings is endangering “millions of babies.” Their message – and their accusation that the Food and Drug Administration has been swayed by industry-sponsored studies and has ignored vital scientific evidence – has led Congress to ask the agency to re-examine the safety of the chemical. A decision is expected by the end of the summer."

... Of course, if someone claims your product harms babies, they don't really need to prove it.  The accusation is so incendiary that the mere suggestion could bankrupt most companies -- which, of course, is the point if you are trying to sell a "safer" plastic product.  In short, it's a "scare racket"…

And yet, many popular media outlets continue to baselessly attack BPA as a dangerous and unsafe chemical.

A CAN’T MISS FORMULA FOR VICTORY
Posted by: Michael Medved at 2:59 PM
The recent GOP triumphs in gubernatorial elections in Virginia and New Jersey provide a resounding rebuttal to those who claim Republicans can win simply by mobilizing their conservative base.

In New Jersey, self-described conservatives amounted to just 30 percent of the electorate and in Virginia only 39 percent. Obviously, if the two candidates appealed solely to those who considered themselves conservative, they would have lost in twin landslides. Instead, they reached out to self-identified moderates—the biggest group in both states. Chris Christie, newly elected Republican governor of New Jersey got 48 percent of the moderate vote, and Bob McDonnell, the big winner in Virginia, got 46 percent of the mod squad. When Republican candidates rally their fellow conservatives, and supplement those votes by at least splitting those who see themselves as moderate, it’s a can’t-miss formula for victory.

New York Times Dips A Toe Into Pro-Family Waters!
Posted by: Jillian Bandes at 2:41 PM
How bold as to suggest maybe mothers and fathers (!!) raising kids together (!!) are good for the health / upbringing of a child. I wonder what NYT readers are liable to do with themselves after reading that!
In recent years, several fathers’ rights organizations have offered father-only parenting programs and groups, and studies have shown that these help men become more responsive and engaged with their children. But a new randomized, controlled study conducted by the Pruetts and the Cowans found that the families did even better if mothers were brought into the picture.

...notably, the families in the couples group did best. They had less parental stress and more marital happiness than the other parents studied, suggesting that the critical difference was not greater involvement by the fathers in child-rearing but greater emotional support between couples.

Breaking: LA Attorney General's Agents Raid New Orleans ACORN Office
Posted by: Meredith Jessup at 2:41 PM
BigGovernment.com is reporting on some developments out of Louisiana this afternoon regarding state action against the community organizing group ACORN:
News of the raid comes from Marcel Reid and her colleagues at ACORN 8, an association of former ACORN leaders and board members. Many of the individuals involved with ACORN 8 were fired from ACORN for demanding a forensic audit following an embezzlement scandal involving Dale Rathke, brother of ACORN co-founder Wade Rathke.
According to NOLA.com:

Attorney General Buddy Caldwell has served a search warrant at the ACORN office at 2609 Canal Street, according to Tammi Arender Herring, a spokeswoman with the office.

Investigators in khaki pants and polo shirts loaded several dozen computers and other electronic items into an SUV. They are also carrying records out of the building on handcarts.

The large office building sits at the corner of Dorgenois and Canal. ACORN staffers were given no notice that a search would be conducted today, Herring said.
Whole story here.

From WDAM in New Orleans:

Assistant Attorney General David Caldwell said a warrant was obtained to seize computers, hard drives and other documents after ACORN attorneys said two unidentified former employees took computers and other items when they left the organization.

Caldwell said investigators will copy records and hard drives, then return them to ACORN.

He said the original allegations of embezzlement were made last year by ACORN board members who were fired after they asked for a forensic examination of the group’s books.

ACORN fired the longtime director of its Louisiana chapter last month, citing a lack of accountability.

Whole story here.

The ‘longtime director’ of ACORNS’s Louisiana chapter is Beth Butler, the longtime companion of ACORN co-founder Wade Rathke.

Stay tuned--I'll try and keep you updated as more info becomes available...

One or Two People Killed And A Dozen Injured In Florida Shooting
Posted by: Jillian Bandes at 2:32 PM
One person has died after a gunman opened fire earlier today in an Orlando office building that housed an engineering company. In addition to the single death, five others were injured. The shooter was laid off from the engineering firm two years ago, though specifics about his motive are still unknown.

This office shooting comes less than 24 hours after the horrific attack on Ft. Hood.

From ABC:
ORLANDO, FL -- Orlando Police say they have arrested the suspect in the downtown Orlando shooting that left one dead and five injured.

Jason Rodriguez was arrested at his mother's residence without incident.

People streamed out of the 16-story Legion Place office building around lunchtime and some told local television stations they had barricaded themselves inside their offices.

Where are the Jobs?
Posted by: John Campbell at 1:28 PM
As you may have heard, the latest numbers on unemployment were released today and merely provide a metric for what Americans across the country have known for a while now; the economy still has not recovered. These numbers, which have broken the double digit mark for the first time in 26 ? years, clearly indicate that the President’s Stimulus package has done nothing that it was intended to do, which was to make the recession shorter and shallower.

You will remember that President Obama’s economic advisors indicated that with the passage of the so-called ‘stimulus package,’ unemployment levels would not exceed 7.8%. Now, as we stare down the face of unemployment levels of 10.2%, it begs the question, Mr. President, where are the jobs?

Behind Closed Doors: The Obamacare Arm Twisting Begins
Posted by: Townhall.com Staff at 12:32 PM
Guest post from Ernest Istook with the Heritage Foundation

The heat is happening behind closed doors as the U.S. House prepares for a Saturday showdown vote on health care. Access is everything. By keeping Members of Congress in Washington, D.C., this weekend, Democratic leaders keep them away from angry constituents back in their home states, where the Members normally would depart from Friday to Monday. (Note: The tactics aren’t different from what Republicans sometimes used when they held the majority.)

The first step is to keep Congress in town. The second is to keep them monitored and available for whenever leaders want to summons them for backroom meetings—sometimes to discuss and sometimes to pressure and browbeat and offer deals. A “buddy system” is sometimes assigned so a fellow Congressman from the party’s whip team keeps tab on each undecided member’s whereabouts, their cell and other private phone numbers, the places they tend to hangout between votes, and similar information.

THIS Doesn't Fit the Narrative!
Posted by: Carol Platt Liebau at 12:18 PM
In the wake of their electoral debacle last Tuesday, lefties like Eric Alterman insist that their partisans have reason to smile, because of ideological divisions in the Republican party.

But wait a minute.  Byron York reports this morning that MoveOn.org is raising money to attack moderate Democrats who decline to toe the party line when it comes to health care.  How strange that the MSM has been focused so exclusively on Republican internecine warfare, no?!

If anything, I'd rather be dealing with the divisions within the Republican Party.  At this point, they're centered around issues that are largely popular with the public, like how much to reduce the size of government, how best to restore jobs, how best to resist the Obama State's mulitple incursions on personal liberty.  Dede Scozzafava -- the nominally Republican candidate in NY-23 -- was so far outside even the Republican "big tent" that anyone who actually agrees with her on the issues can't be classified as anything but a Democrat.

In contrast, the Democrat internecine fighting is focused on an issue that is deeply unpopular with Americans -- health care "reform."  What's more, the members of the party who are under attack are, by and large, Democrats who just can't buck their moderate districts by supporting a bill the public hates on an issue that isn't voters' top priorities.

So the MSM chin-strokers and navel-gazers can revel in GOP disagreements all they want.  I prefer them to the problems that the Democrats have.0

Pelosi's Bill Might Go For A Vote Tomorrow... Or It Might Not
Posted by: Jillian Bandes at 12:07 PM
It's being widely reported that the critical House vote on Obamacare is slated for tomorrow evening -- but everyone still wants to know: Does Pelosi have the votes? The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Hill aren't sure... and House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) just hinted that it may get pushed back. My guess? This push for tomorrow is a lot of bluster, and probably won't pan out.

Talk About Tone-Deaf . . .
Posted by: Carol Platt Liebau at 12:01 PM
On a day when employment figures reveal the highest unemployment rate in more than a quarter-century -- and more than 10% of Americans are unemployed -- the Democrats nevertheless continue to push their forced march toward health care "reform."

The move is spectacularly tone-deaf -- and utterly contemptuous of the priorities and needs of Americans -- given that PelosiCare will impose job-killing mandates on small businesses.

Are Democrats truly so anxious to institute government control of health care that they're willing to let hard-working Americans, who want to find work, suffer?

Obama's Disgraceful Friday Photo-Op
Posted by: Meredith Jessup at 11:54 AM
As of yesterday, President Obama was scheduled to spend Friday afternoon on Capitol Hill, rallying the troops for tomorrow House health care vote at 6:00pm.  But following yesterday's tragic shooting at Fort Hood, it looks like plans have changed.

The White House schedule now says that the president will be making his trip to Capitol Hill tomorrow and visiting Walter Reed Army Medical Center--his first visit since taking office in January.  According to the AP, White House officials are claiming the plans to visit Walter Reed before yesterday's shooting.  But if this were true, why would the president be delaying his trip to Capitol Hill to go to Walter Reed?  I doubt his schedulers double-booked him.

In addition, the White House is insisting the visit to Walter Reed has nothing to do with yesterday's shooting.  Doubtful.  The president is under fire today after his "frightening insensitivity" toward the Fort Hood shooting yesterday as he spoke before a group at the White House.

This whole situation is similar to his last military photo-op, saluting America's fallen soldiers as they returned home to rest.  If it were to show gratitude and pay tribute to our military personnel, why not turn the cameras off?  What kind of solemn reflection can one have with flashbulbs going off?

Undoubtedly, today's visit to Walter Reed will also include the WH press pool following behind the president.  Obama's "spontaneous" visit to Walter Reed today is nothing more than a hollow, calculated political maneuver and photo-op and is disgraceful in light of the tremendous sacrifice our men and women in uniform make on a daily basis.
