Conservatives Debate Airbus Tanker Bid
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 12:56 PM
Kerri (Houston) Toloczko, a Senior Vice President for Policy for the Institute for Liberty, asked me to post her response to a recent blog post authored by my good friend, Quin Hillyer.

What follows is her response:
In Quin Hillyer’s recent American Spectator article, Pentagon in the Tanker, Mr. Hillyer notes that two years ago Northrop Grumman won the $40B contract for new Air Force refueling tankers “fair and square” and then had it “stolen away from them.”

Where to start?  Northrop Grumman was the minority American partner of Airbus/EADS, the French company that was initially given the contract.

Last month, the World Trade Organization ruled against Airbus in an illegal subsidies case brought by the United States Trade Representative, determining that Airbus had won the original bid because of massive subsidies provided by France and other EU nations – designed intentionally to underbid America’s Boeing.  “Fair and square” is an interesting reworking of “guilty as charged” by the WTO in a U.S. Government case.

Steve Forbes Endorses Doug Hoffman (NY-23)
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 11:52 AM
The Hoffman campaign just sent out this press release:
STEVE FORBES ENDORSES HOFFMAN

Forbes: Doug Hoffman stands for real Republican values

Former Republican Presidential candidate, lifelong Republican, and conservative activist Steve Forbes today endorsed Doug Hoffman in his bid to become the next Congressman from New York’s 23rd Congressional District.

Steve Forbes said: “Only one candidate in this race adheres to and promotes the true Republican values of smaller government, pro-growth tax policies and respect for traditional values. That candidate is Doug Hoffman.

Palin Goes Rogue: Supports Hoffman Over GOP Candidate
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 9:37 PM
As I noted earlier, Sarah Palin just announced her endorsement of Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman for the NY-23 Special Election to be held November 3.

Hoffman, of course, is running against a Democrat and Republican Dede Scozzafava.

This race has become significant and symbolic as it pits grassroots conservatives against the establishment Republican Party.

When looking at the potential 2012 primary field, so far, only Palin has endorsed the Conservative Party candidate.  (Newt Gingrich has endorsed the liberal Republican candidate, while Romney, Huckabee, and Pawlenty have all stayed out of it.)

Meanwhile, grassroots conservatives, talk radio hosts, and bloggers -- three groups of people who matter most during a primary campaign -- have coalesced behind Hoffman.

If she has presidential aspirations, Palin's endorsement seems to be sagacious.

Breaking: Palin Supports Hoffman
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 8:28 PM
The Weekly Standard's John McCormack has posted the following statement from Sarah Palin:

The people of the 23rd Congressional District of New York are ready to shake things up, and Doug Hoffman is coming on strong as Election Day approaches! He needs our help now.

The votes of every member of Congress affect every American, so it's important for all of us to pay attention to this important Congressional campaign in upstate New York. I am very pleased to announce my support for Doug Hoffman in his fight to be the next Representative from New York's 23rd Congressional district. It's my honor to endorse Doug and to do what I can to help him win, including having my political action committee, SarahPAC, donate to his campaign the maximum contribution allowed by law.

Our nation is at a crossroads, and this is once again a "time for choosing."

Time for Dede to go Bye Bye
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 11:59 AM

scovva

If liberal Republican Dede Scozzafava's positions on abortion and taxes -- plus her close ties to ACORN -- failed to make her an unacceptable choice for Republicans in NY-23 -- calling the police on a reporter has disqualified her to everyone else.

At this point in the race, one can clearly observe that it is not Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman who might play spoiler to Scozzafava -- but Scozzafava who might play spoiler to Hoffman.  And that is a very real possibility.  A Democrat may well win this race.

For the good of the Republican Party, Scozzafava should end her candidacy today.  Her past positions -- as well as current ambiguity over her position on current issues like card check -- have rendered her simply unelectable.

Had she run a competent campaign, this would be a harder call to make -- even for conservatives.  But Scozzafava's liberal ideology, coupled with her horrific campaign, have conspired to make her the potential spoiler.

Stepping aside would be a commendable move and would allow Republicans to coalesce around Doug Hoffman, who, by the way, can win.

Dede should bow out today.

Ken Blackwell In Support of Doug Hoffman
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 8:04 AM
Over at Politico, Ken Blackwell comes out in support of Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman for Congress (NY-23).

Here's an excerpt:

Doug Hoffman didn’t have a chance to make his case to Republican voters in a primary in New York’s 23rd Congressional District. That’s because the local GOP establishment chose its candidate behind closed doors, in a formerly smoke-filled room. The Republican grass roots never had a chance to choose among qualified candidates.

And the National Republican Congressional Committee compounded this error by jumping into the contest with both left feet.

VA Dems Release 'Pander Bob' Video (My Take: It Helps Him...)
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 4:14 PM
The liberals are pushing this video of Bob McDonnell talking about social values.  ... Actually, he's talking about (gasp!) George Washington and ... character.

Here's the "scandalous" video, which I think will do nothing but help McDonnell in the Commonwealth of Virginia:

I suppose this is meant to make him look like an extremist???:

This is either 1). meant to lull Republicans into a false sense of security, or 2). a clear sign of desperation.  If this is all they've got left to attack McDonnell on, November 3rd is going to be a long night for Deeds and Obama.

New Alan Grayson Website Violates House Ethics Rules
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 3:21 PM
Rep. Alan Grayson (D-FL) just took to the House floor to announce his new website, "Names of the Dead".  According to the website:

Every year, more than 44,000 Americans die simply because have no health insurance.

I have created this project in their memory. I hope that honoring them will help us end this senseless loss of American lives. If you have lost a loved one, please share the story of that loved one with us. Help us ensure that their legacy is a more just America, where every life that can be saved will be saved.

I'm told this may be an ethics violation because the site was created out of his House office.  Developing ...

Update:

The rules in the congressional handbook House Ethics Manual (p. 131) which it seems to violate are as follows:

Member and Committee Websites: Under rules issued by the Committee on House Administration set forth in the Members‘ Handbook and the Committees‘ Handbook, Member and Committee websites –

-  May not include personal, political, or campaign information; and

-  May not be directly linked or refer to websites created or operated by a campaign or any campaign-related entity, including political parties and campaign committees.

This website is clearly a violation of the above rules.

The disclaimer says "Paid for by Congressman Alan Grayson," but includes links to his campaign website, etc..

Rainn Wilson to Narrate Pro-Capitalism Documentary, 'The New Recruits'
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 4:37 PM
On the heels of Michael Moore's recent anti-capitalism film, an upcoming documentary seeks to position capitalism as the newest weapon in the fight against global poverty.

"The New Recruits" -- which is due out in January -- is the tale of three recent business school grads who travel to third world countries and use the principles of capitalism to bring about positive social change.

For example, they spent a year addressing problems like water shortages in Pakistan and the lack of electricity in rural India.  And one of the cast members travels to Nairobi, Kenya to help get pay-per-use toilets in the slums to counter the health and sanitation problems caused by human waste.

... And here's the best part: Emmy Award-nominated actor Rainn Wilson, who stars as Dwight Schrute on NBC’s comedy series The Office, narrates the film.  “I’m thrilled to be doing narration for the documentary The New Recruits,” said Rainn Wilson. “It’s a fascinating and often hysterical study of the challenges of capitalism in the developing world. Plus, I sound amaaaazing.”

John Gizzi Argues for a "Fresh Face" in 2012
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 4:16 PM
Earlier today, I authored a column stating that if history has anything to say about it, Mitt Romney or Sarah Palin will get the GOP nod.

Now, my good friend and colleague John Gizzi, a highly-respected reporter for HUMAN EVENTS, has weighed in on this issue.  John emailed this insightful response to me earlier today, and said I could share it with you:
I liked your article and I agree with you on history being on the side of Romney.  Except for one thing:  wherever I travel, more and more Republicans are fed up with this idea of someone’s turn.  More often than not, you here “Him again?!!” rather than “It’s his turn?” (or “It’s her turn?).

Thus, I would argue that someone who is a fresh face has an advantage.  Which may explain why Govs. Barbour and Pawlenty, possibly Jim DeMint, Gen. David Petraeus, or someone who emerges in 2020—say a Gov. John Kasich of Ohio—could easily be a heavyweight contender in two years.  Put another way, Republicans finally won the House in 1994 when they ran a national strategy; they might well win in 2012 with a fresh face.
