TX Straw Poll Analysis

A few thoughts on today's GOP TX Straw Poll ...
1. Texas Congressman Ron Paul, came in 3rd. Most of his supporters, apparently, were not eligible to vote in the TX Straw Poll (only Delegates to the state convention were eligible). Though Paul turned out lots of supporters, it didn't translate to votes, leading me to ask: If Paul can't come in 1st place here -- where can he win (other than the internet)? Frankly, it is entirely possible that Paul's aggressive (and non-traditional) supporters may have actually turned some party regulars (who could vote) against the candidate.
2. This morning (on the video that will be posted later), I predicted Fred Thompson would have a surprisingly strong finish. He did. I think there are two reasons: For one, Thompson's southern appeal fits in well in Texas. The other reason is that his announcement on Friday (that he will announce for president after Labor Day), gave him a little buzz going into the weekend.
3. Duncan Hunter is obviously a big winner here. He deserved to win because he showed up -- and really worked it. He shook hands with hundreds of folks, and signed lots of autographs (mostly on tee-shirts). I can't help but believe many of the votes Hunter got were due to his merely showing up and campaigning hard. The question is: Would these votes have also propelled Mike Huckabee to a victory here? We won't know if this was a huge missed opportunity for Huckabee to keep his momentum going. Hunter took advantage, and for that, I give him kudos ...

The Texas delegates who at the last minute were the only ones allowed to vote in the Straw Poll were naturally Bush supporting Republicans, Townhaller type people - Evangelicals and other Neocons whose leaders like Richard Pearle think we have a mandate from God to keep the peace in the Middle East, spending a trillion dollars on the Iraqi War and 3500 Christian American lives so far for 'nationbuilding', 'winning hearts and minds', and 'spreading Democracy'. Secondary to the protection of Iraqi bridges and borders for the Townhaller Neocons are the protection of the bridges and borders, power grid and other infrastructure of the United States. Secondary to the Townhaller Neocons is the fact that the economy is collapsing, a house of cards sold to the Chinese. Secondary to the Townhaller Neocons is the fact that Ron Paul has been married for 50 years and lives a Christian life, while their heroes, Fred Thompson and Rudy Giuliani are divorcées. Yet, somehow, miraculously, by the power of God, some are seeing the light and Ron Paul came in the top three, while the other nine weren't even close. |

Duncan Hunter would make an excellent president. He is my Congressman and has done an excellent job. He is a great conservative and always responds to his constituents. I keep saying if he doesn't win the nomination I will write him in. I know he would have a hard time because of his conservative voting record, but at least he's honest! Vote for Duncan Hunter!!

Of 15 states and 21 polls, Dr. Paul has 8 first place finishes, 4 second place finishes, 4 third-place finishes (including Texas Straw Poll today), five finishes from fourth to sixth.
Thats a consistent level of support that even Mitt Romney has not achieved. Tancredo, Huckabee, Hunter have all had just one break-through straw poll but then poof, No momentum. How could Tancredo do so well in Iowa and do terribly in Texas today? No momentum. Brownback does 17% in Iowa, less than 1% in Texas.No momentum. Huckabee shines at Ames but gets 8% in Texas, even though he's from a neighboring state? McCain does terribly in every straw poll. Hunter does terribly everywhere but soars to 41% in Texas today. Only Ron Paul has shown consistency, his supporters have intensity, and the Paul campaign has buzz and $$$ momentum for the Republican nomination.

Matt, your column some time back that "introduced" Hunter to TH readers. I believe that column was a good boost at a critical time.
Hunter's campaign has not "caught fire" as some would demand - but I believe his style of campaigning has long legs, and it is still a long way to go.
Hunter thrives on retail politics - he's learning how to connect in a way that translates to a national campaign, in contrast to a congressional district.
The dark horse continues to thunder to the lead!!!

I'm a 7th generation Texan. I've been a Republican in Texas since 1972. I was a Republican in this state long before it was cool to be a Republican. I wanted to go to Fort Worth so I could cast my vote for Ron Paul. But to my surprise I find out the vote is limited to past convention delegates. Pathetic. Why limit the vote to Party Hacks. The NeoCons that run Town Hall know Ron Paul would have won if they had let everyone vote. Instead, to be honest, the rig the election so Duncan(Lets Bomb Iran)Hunter wins. Good candidate, needs to get more exposure. Hats off to the win today.
Matt Lewis, Paul just got 16% of people who voted for Bush in 2004. Combine that with all people who didn't vote last election cycle, independants, and republicans who aren't delegates and Ron Paul is going to give Fred Thompson a run for his money in March 2008.

so I'll say it again...
217 votes for Paul when only delegates were allowed to vote is incredible! It shows that there is considerable support for him within the core of the Republican Party. Since Paul has a distinct advantage over the other candidates (regardless of tier) courting the independent and disillusioned conservative vote, this seems to me to be a very good sign for his campaign. I am actually suprised he did so well. More so than I am Romney did so poorly. In fact, because of this result, this is the first time I can honestly say that I think Ron Paul has a shot at the nomination.

Most (if not all) of the the pro-Paul post's I've been reading here on TownHall seem quite pleased with the result. I don't think I've seen any comments claiming the poll was rigged. Can you point me to one?
As a partially undecided Republican who will vote in the primary, I've been somewhat confused about the content of the anti-Paul comments on TownHall. It seems that the commonality is they make ad hominem generalizations without any substance whatsoever. The confusion is... do any of the TH commenters that dislike Paul have a reason they dislike him... or are the anti-Paul comments actually written by Paul supporters trying to cleverly make Paul-haters look, to be nice, not intelligent?

Gentlemen and Ladies: Only a liberal would vote for anyone other than Mr. Paul. He is the only conservative running in the Republican presidential primary. The others want to extend government power, rather than let each of us be empowered. Liberals in sheep's clothing is what this field is. Shameful. |

I follow everything said about Ron Paul, Anne and I have yet to hear anything being said about the poll being rigged. I guess Garthwaite's blog is one I missed. It HAS been said that it's a shame that ONLY previous convention delegates were allowed to vote and quite frankly, that seems about as "scientific" a poll as the gallup and other phone polls who only call "likely voters" who have voted for the party recently, and have not changed parties within a certain period of time, nor those who haven't voted before. My GOSH, I sure hope the primaries are a bit more fair. I'm a "Paulite" and I'm glad to see I'm aligned with those that have original ideas and want to see a new direction for this country. |

Anne, try and spin around this .. Why did Town Hall set the rules to only let past GOP delegates vote? That's no way to run a straw poll. In Iowa, they only let Iowans vote which is fair. But limiting the vote to party hacks is so bogus I can't help but think Town Hall set this up because the NeoCons that run this place really fear Ron Paul |

Paul lacks the "virtue" that is primary among the well-established Republican officialdom: loyalty to the party leader. So, it isn't surprising that he did not do better among historic GOP convention delegates.
Probably, the only place he can win is among sincere voters who are willing to put principle over party. It's called an "election."

The poll results for Texas that I read said Hunter got 534 votes, not 34 and that would put him in 3rd place without any votes from any other poll, if the rest of your numbers are right. I think you should recalculate your numbers and re-post to at least have your facts correct. I don't care where any particular candidate ends up, only that there are no glaring errors in the numbers. |

Isn't the official conservative media (Fox, Limbaugh, Hannity, et al.) always saying that the MSM is liberal and/or Leftist? That they are anti-war McGovernite peaceniks. That they hate the military. If this is the case, why are they blacking out the only anti-war, non-interventionist candidate in the race, Ron Paul. The answer is that the media is pro-war and pro-big-government. The media only opposes the wars later on when they might cause people to question the legitimacy of big-government. |

FYI: Texas GOP hates Ron Paul and actively runs candidates against him for his congressional seat. In fact, Ms. Sekula had a booth at the straw poll as well. She is a republican, backed by the machine, running against Paul. She will lose, as all do who challenge his seat.

This is the no-spin answer from a Ron Paul supporter: 1. They really wanted to make sure it was not flooded by non-republicans. Texas is an open primary state. You do not register as a republican or a democrat. Anyone can vote in any primary. They would be open for a democrat raid and not get a true measure.
At least this way the vote was "pure" (although maybe too pure).
2. The convention center's facilities would not have handled much more for speeches (at least in the room they chose). Had it been wide open, there would have been thousands upon thousands of people instead the few that attended. There would have been logistic problems. |

I've lived in Ron Paul's District. I've corresponded with him by email on several occasions. I respect his views, and appreciate his Libertarian roots. I do believe, however, he is profoundly wrong about Iraq - and his position is a threat to the stability of this nation and the world as a whole.
Having just spent 2 days at the straw poll, I'm trying very hard to seperate the fine American "Ron Paul" that I believe I know, from the bunch of pitiful losers that polluted the event. Even on this column, the losers whine about "Delegate Only" voting. Hell, it's been published for months, was clearly delineated on the registration, and widely discussed by Mike Gallagher on syndicated radio. Now somehow it's news?
Truth is, much of Pauls newly found support cares not about his strict Constitutionalism, limited Government, pro gun rights, positions - but from a pack of idiotic conspiracy nuts who love to hear him call for immediate withdrawl from Iraq.
So here's some more news Paul Bots, whine all you want, claim all the victories you want, fill these pages with all the inane nonesense about winning that you want. Your guy is a single digit non contestant in the 2008 Presidential Race. THIS will convince the Democrat partys' Ron Paul brigade, you know the Democrats POSING as RonniePaul supporters here on TownHall, and other places, to convince the American people to support the weakest possible Republican, Ron Paul, for the partys nomination, so as to make it easier for the Hildabeast to steal the election next year, that Ron Paul CAN NOT WIN either the nomination or the general election.

Congressman Paul has been a Republican Congressman for TWENTY YEARS. He ran on the Libertarian ticket for President, once, twenty years ago.

By the way, Phil, the overflowing bus from Houston arrived 2 minutes after 10:00 and the delegates were not allowed to vote. If they had, 2nd and 3rd places would likely be flipped. I just wanted to give you something good to dream about. ;-)
Oh, and one final thing. Congressman Paul brought in more money in donations from one night in this visit to Texas, than the Texas GOP brought in from the entire Straw Poll. It does seem that Texans do indeed like Dr. Paul. :) |

I am a traditional conservative of the Barry Goldwater type. I have read Dr. Paul's speeches/articles for over 25 years and have watched his voting record. I can't speak for everyone, but I support him for just those reasons you mentioned. His strict constructionism, his A+ rating from Gun Owners' of America, the awarding of the designation of 'Best Taxpayers' Friend Ever' by the National Taxpayers Union; his belief in sound money; his desire to get us out of the United Nations; his pro-life stance; his votes against runaway government spending; belief in states' rights and his strong position on protecting individual liberty.
I also agree with him about Iraq. Not because I think we shouldn't go after those who attacked us. I do. In fact, that is why I think we should leave Iraq. Iraq did not attack us. Our attackers are in Pakistan. We attacked Iraq to carry out a plan for regime change that was passed under no other than Bill Clinton. It is called the Iraq Liberation Act of 1998. Go look it up. We can't keep doing this nation-building thing, crescen. Our country is 9 Trillion dollars in debt and we are borrowing over 2.5 billion dollars a day, much of which is from Red China. Our dollar is on the verge of collapsing. We need to focus on getting the bad guys and defending our own country.
You made a couple of comments about Dr. Paul's supporters, crescen. There are all types from across the political spectrum. We disagree on a lot of things, but we join together in support of this man because of his strong support of the Constitution and individual liberty. I've only seen this kind of thing happen once before in my lifetime and it was during the Reagan Revolution. What you are seeing with Ron Paul's campaign is a continuation of that. |

But Phil, as a neoconservative, you might be interested. You both believe in BIG government force to ram your agendas down the throats of the American people.
As far as the polls are concerned, Paul has been doing pretty well in the various Straw polls and has won several. You're right though, he isn't polling high in the Rasmussen-type polls. Some of those of course, they do not even offer Ron Paul as one of the choices. Regardless, he needs to come up quite a bit. I agree. Surely, you must know that at this point most people are voting for someone of which they've heard. It's all name recognition at this stage.
It does make a bit more difficult when he does not get a bunch of free media coverage, you know? Between Giuliani and Thompson being the darlings of FOX news and awarded hours of free media coverage to the so-called 2nd tier being given a fraction of the time to speak in the debates than the so-called front-runners. In the last debate, Dr. Paul was given like 4 minutes compared to 11 minutes for Romney.
I wonder if this what our democratic government has become? Where the MSM chooses our president for us, by their coverage or lack thereof. |

I'm pretty sure that all of you realize that TH has been rather slow showing some posts lately after we have clicked on the "Post Your Comments" button. So what do we do? We push it again and again and again. HERE'S A THOUGHT for you. After you push the POST button and the column/blog reappears, if your post does not show up, try refreshing the screen a few times to see if it eventually does show up, which it does evertyime I try it.
IF, after refreshing a couple times your post STILL DOESN'T SHOW UP, THEN repost it, but only push the post button once each try. That will avoid the duplivate posts that are getting to be quite annoying. |

NO, I don't. I think it's appropriate. WE don't want to be like the Democrats and the MSM and make a mountain out of a molehill.
Personally I think Craig is guilty of what he's accused of, and his protestations are only further digging him into a hole. But why keep talking about it? It won't change anything and it serves NO USEFUL PURPOSE.
The man is resigning from the Senate at a time when we can least afford to lose members on our side. But at least we're not being hypocritical like the Dems and insisting that he stay, or re-electing him and giving him a seat of power. |

I just wish our darn bus from Houston hadn't arrived 2 minutes past the cutoff time, so all those delegates would have been able to vote. It was our fault though. The Straw Poll was completely fair.

I'm not a Dem. The only Dem for President that I voted for was Jimmy Carter when I was 18 and my dad persuaded me in 1976. Dr. Ron Paul is a true conservative. To all Ron Paul supporters who live in Texas and are complaining about the "delegates only" policy at the Texas Straw Poll:
1. After you vote in the primary next year, attend the precinct convention that will begin in your polling place as soon as the polls close. 2. Convince the other attendees at your precinct convention to elect you to your senatorial district or county convention as a delegate. 3. At the district or county convention, get elected to be delegate to the state convention.
The Republican Party of Texas is very much a grass roots, bottom-up, organization. The people who get elected to represent their county or state senatorial district as delegates to the state convention are not "party hacks." They are your neighbors who take the time to find out how the process works and to get involved in it.
By the way, as a bona fide delegate to the straw poll, I did not appreciate the high-pressure tactics and condescending attitudes of the workers the Ron Paul campaign sent to the straw poll to "work" the delegates.
Kudos to Duncan Hunter whose fortrightness and gentlemanly demeanor earned my vote.

We would have to see a packet to know for sure. But, someone who was there said that although the front page just gave the date (today) and the time (10:00), there was a statement elsewhere in the packet that 10:00 was the cutoff. It was misleading, but the information was in there.
The bus from Houston was scheduled to be there at 8:30. I have no idea why it arrived so late. It is unfortunate that these delegates traveled for over 5 hours to get there and were not allowed to vote. But, those are the breaks. They should have gotten there on time.
I have yet to see anything that indicates that the Straw Poll was unfair.
Move on to something more productive.

Darby, if someone did that to you, I apologize. They shouldn't have. You should know though, that the campaign did not *send* any of the supporters. Those were the only "workers" there. People came of their own free will and at their own initiative.
Just as you described the Texas GOP, the Ron Paul campaign is very much a bottom up grassroots organization.

No Jack. I think we need to get clear documentation of wrongdoing. From what I have heard thus far, I do not think we have that for the Texas Straw Poll.
Until that time, it is my belief that we have to work very hard to get Dr. Paul's message spread out in our communities, putting literature in people's hands. We know his message is sound and when people hear it, so very many get hooked. We can't wait for the MSM to do a grand turnaround. It's not going to happen. There are over 40,000 of us in Meetup Groups around the country and the number is growing every single day. No other campaign has that. Not even close. If we get busy and approach this strategically, we won't need the MSM.
Dr. Paul is the true conservative in the race. His record is impeccable. You and I know that he is the ONLY Republican who can beat Hitlery/Obama. He is the only candidate, who like Ronald Reagan, unites people from across the political spectrum.

Congrats to Duncan Hunter - a good man who worked hard for his win today. I saw Duncan at the Iowa Straw Poll where his aggressive pro-war speech did not resonate well with Iowa voters. He toned it down and stayed with the emotional appeal which worked much better for him today.
I was somewhat curious with the line-up of non-candidate speakers that immediately proceeded today's vote however. It certainly worked to Duncan's advantage but maybe that was just chance. We had a guy from Townhall and a retired military hero who narrowly escaped death when the Pentagon was hit on 9-11. Both of these gentlemen were excellent speakers who very effectively drove home the message (in their view) that we must exert our will in the Middle East. It was suggested that action in Iran must be taken immediately and that the next President must be willing to make pre-emtive strikes to guarantee our safety and instill fear in the enemy. The logic is that if they fear what we will do, they will be too afraid to attack us after we have demonstrated our resolve.
I'm not a typical Ron Paul supporter (if there is one) since I don't necessary have a problem with this logic. My major issue is can we make it work? Where is this enemy and who are they exactly? What is it that we do to whom to bring them to their knees? I'm not so much worried of Iran as the free flow of people and cargo coming through the Mexican border. We have to be smarter and more ruthless than our enemy. My guy is smarter and I think he is a lot tougher than generally meets the eye. We learned that War 101 didn't work in Viet Nam. This is War 404 and an essay exam to boot. Tough is good but smarter will win the day - followed by a hammer. Let's start with smart and all do a little research on what our candidates stand for. I can't speak for Duncan but you might do a search on Ron Paul Library.

PS - Prim and proper is not all RP supporters. Energy and passion is. Fact is, the Republican Party is changing for the better without even knowing - going backward and forward at the same time. Yes - all a bit strange and confusing but all good. Some call it the Ron Paul Revolution but he will be the first to tell you it really has nothing to do with him personally. It's just a bunch of crazy ideas that some guys came up with way back when. I think it was 1776 and these guys thought it would be a good idea for people to be free and focus on their God-given rights, responsibilities and talents. And somewhere in all that old paper was the part about not getting involved in entangling alliances and only going to war with a declaration from congress. Talk about old fashioned - we haven't done that in over 50 years. And come to think of it - when was the last time we won a war? I guess we're just smarter than those old guys with weird wigs. Who would ever think that individuals would be capable of protecting themselves? |

Just thought of this one before bed - we had several black speakers at the Texas Straw Poll who were truly the cream of the crop - very talented, funny and just great to watch. We had a video about how the Democrats actually were behind the KKK and a clip from an Hispanic family that had been Republican for nearly a century. As I gazed across several thousand people in attendance, however, not a black face was in sight.
I'm not big into the race thing but obviously our party is trying to make inroads and get more support from minorities. It's also obvious we are doing the token thing while at the same time our tokens are exhibiting more talent and entertainment value than many of our candidates. Go figure. |

I was surprised about the straw poll rules and that is why I stayed home and did not go to Ft. Worth.
They could have gotten more turn-out if the straw poll would have been open to registered Texas Republican's and had a family friendly type atmosphere where you could bring the kids along.

We took our eyes off the prize and let bin Laden escape from Afghanistan into Pakistan and there he sits with his merry henchmen and have completely rebuilt. Where did we go? Second, the point I keep making about Ron Paul is that his followers are bigger news than the candidate. It doesn't matter what he says or believes. His followers are nutty zealots who have become the problem. Have you ever had a discussion with a Lyndon LaRouche zombie? You've become a circus sideshow. You keep coming up with bizarre statistics and when the straw polls are unfavorable, it's because you were cheated. One of the earlier comments claimed a 14-15% margin of error in the national polls to argue that Ron Paul is actually leading. I've made the same satirical arguments to insinuate that the real leader is ME!!! I'm polling exactly the same as Ron Paul, less than the 3-5% margin of error. The entire Ron Paul phenomena is as much a farce as my own campaign to be the first president to gain office by insinuation. |

We are being sold out by corporations intent on importing workers for jobs that can't be exported with the taxpayers paying the true costs, financial and human. This analysis shows bias. Yes, Duncan Hunter probably got some votes by being at the Straw Poll and working the crowd. But many or most who voted for him attended the event in order to vote for him. He is correct on the issues that the Texas GOP delegates are concerned about. |

You are missing the point. Our attackers are in PAKISTAN; not IRAQ. Iraq had nothing to do with 9-11 and President Bush has admitted it on numerous occasions.
We went to war in Iraq to carry out BILL CLINTON'S plan for regime change in Iraq! Geez people. This bill was passed way back in 1998. It is called the Iraq Liberation Act (Public Law 105-338).

The GOP has been so corrupted by the NeoCons. When Ron Paul says, Eisenhower was elected go get us out of Korea, Nixon Vietnam he's right. Real conservatives always look at war only as a last option. Since the mid 90s, the NeoCons have been pushing for the invasion of Iraq. Well the world would be a safer place is Saddam was still around. He acted as a check against Iran. A lot of people here don't know what "conservative" means.
Conservatives are NOT pro-war. Conservatives are NOT interventionists.
A conservative does whatever it takes to avoid war and then would fight only as a last resort. A conservative does as little as possible, only what is necessary, to accomplish a task.
What I see here are a lot of "neo-con" nutcases. They are blood-thirsty warmongers. They are foreign interventionists. They think that the United States has some sort of moral obligation handed down by God Himself to convert the world over to the American way of life, because everyone else in the world is a bunch of backward heathens that need to be saved by us.
That is not conservatism. That is fascist authoritarianism.

Ron Paul is going to win the New Hampshire Primary because his message of freedom rings loud and true there. If it rings loudly enough, it will be heard throughout the rest of the nation in time for all of America to realize that it's not too late to restore liberty throughout the land.

What you described is not conservatism but a childishly utopian isolation. Our founding fathers did not advocate isolationism but staying out of European politics and empire building. In those days, our national interests were almost entirely contained within our borders.
The conservatism I buy into does not advocate abandoning our national interests to the whims of our enemies just because they lie outside of our now undefended borders. We are fighting in the ME to defend our national interests since we we don't have the will to wean ourselves from imported oil. You Paulettes can keep blathering about the pro-Israel/neocon conspiracy but it doesn't change the reality. Ron Paul or Hillary Clinton. 70% of Americans want out of Iraq and want fundamental change -- like it or not. Ron Paul is the only Republican that has broad appeal to people across the political spectrum that are fed up with politics as usual. I have a hard-core democrat friend who has been waiting since 2000 to vote for his idol, Hillary. Although he disagrees with Paul on many social issues, he sees the importance of restoring our Republic and our monetary system. He is changing to Republican to vote in the primaries for Paul. If disillusioned Dems were joining the party for any other candidate, you would welcome them into the "big tent".
People who support Paul come from every walk of life, young and old. Check out the profiles on ronpaul.meetup.com. Yes, I'm sure there are some fruits and nuts -- they like Freedom, too. But you will see alot of people who look and live just like you and your loved ones. Average folks who have had enough.
I voted for Bush, I was in favor of the war, but I was just duped into supporting a giant theft. Admit it...we were wrong. Everything bad thing Dr. Paul said would happen, has. How can you argue with reality? Fighting in Iraq has not stopped terrorists from trying and sometimes succeeding in attacks elsewhere. Quit running scared and think about what you're supporting. I am just as afraid of Clinton as I am of any of the other authoritarians winning. War and instability is profitable and a politically expedient way to keep the sheep in line.

I am not able to donate much, so I try to choose my causes carefully. I donated last summer during the Hezbollah war to the Jewish-Christian Alliance for the war fund for Isrealis. When I received my Texas Straw Poll registration packet last June, I read through it immediately. It was clear to me that credentialing would take place all day (7 AM to 7 PM) on Friday and from 7 AM until 10 AM on Saturday. It was also clear that no delegates would be seated after 10 AM.
BTW, the registration fee was $50, not $75. |

National "polls" are showing him at 1-3%, but here he got 3rd place, 16%, among *delegates only*, no new voters. If he did that well here, there's no telling how much better he's going to do as the campaign goes on.

Ron Paul's supporters ran the gamut from young professionals to hirsute hippies to middle-aged parents to the fiesty elderly. Some of them were in-your-face offensive while others seemed slightly embarrassed by the shock tactics of their compatriots. Some tried to outrage with their theories on legalizing prostitution and drugs, and proudly sported their anti-war and anarchist tendencies while others quietly held their signs and were friendly to all. Some I really liked, and some I wouldn't care to cross paths with again. (Ghoulish anarchist goths, anyone?) It was a weird mish-mash of folks, but you gotta hand it to Ron Paul for uniting them all against The Establishment.
I will say one thing I really dislike about hard-core Paul supporters (is there any other kind?): they think they are the only True Conservatives and go out of their way to denounce anyone and everyone who doesn't agree with them as "neo-con warmongers" or something equally offensive. That unwarranted arrogance will lose RP more support than anything else - it is such an incredible turn-off.
Besides, nothing could be further from the truth. I am a conservative, albeit an Independent one, having left the Republican Party years ago - hence my own ineligibility to vote in the Straw Poll. Paul supporters shouldn't complain about not being allowed to vote because they weren't former delegates. Of course they weren't eligible - because they're NOT Republicans, they're Libertarians. Big difference. Libertarians can host their own straw poll and credential whomever they want. In this case, they were guests at the Republican Straw Poll, as I was, and some of them really made asses of themselves.
For those Ron Paul supporters that were impassioned, yet still polite and cordial, I do feel sorry for you that you will be judged by the company you keep...but it's a fact of life. And unfortunately, some of that company was downright WRONG.

Douglass, while at the Poll, I heard a LOT of complaints from Ron Paul supporters that they had way more people than anyone else, but only some of them were eligible to vote. I had to explain to them - more than once- that they were not eligible because they were not current or former delegates. In fact, they weren't even Republican! Just because they are registered voters did not make them eligible. The irony was that they couldn't see the hypocrisy of complaining that they couldn't avail themselves of the privileges of The Establishment while all the while scorning the members of The Establishment.
In fact, on these threads you see a lot of comments about ALL the people RP had bussed in..."if only ALL those people could've voted, RP would've placed second". Well, the rules were clear well beforehand. Some of us made extraordinary efforts to be there (even I, who couldn't vote). I know of several Hunter delegates who left at 0300 from Houston to get there in time. Sometimes the best-laid plans (such as your buses from Houston) go awry, but it's not a conspiracy - it's just bad luck or incompetence. Live and learn.

This post was an example of how ron paul supporters rip down others: Without reason. I just wanted to see how it felt.
I must admit, as i have before, I have many libertarian streaks in me and think Ron Paul is right on a lot if not most issues. However, I think those on this sight who support him generally are militant in their persuasions and do a horrible job in convincing others based on reason.

It is true. Ron Paul is pretty sweet, but his supporters and their lazy often irrational zeal is a turn off. it fogs his philosophy and positions. more rational and substantive debate would do them well because his message is rational and should resonate with many. |

I was thrilled to participate as a guest at Saturday's straw poll, it was an eye-opening view into the workings of politics.
After following Dr. Paul in the mini-parade from his hotel to the convention center, I entered the center's main hallway leading to the room where the speeches were to be given. I encountered an older woman seated alone, quietly, in a folding chair, holding a Duncan Hunter sign. It was sweet, somehow, and I couldn't help but make eye contact with her and smile as I, also alone and quiet, walked by holding my Ron Paul sign.
Imagine my surprise as she furrowed her brow at me and disapprovingly shook her head. :(
Inside, during the speeches, I sat next to a hilarious, but vocal, white-haired Ron Paul supporter in her late sixties. As the first video started up and the burning Twin Towers appeared on the huge video monitors, she leaned over to me and mumbled something about GOP propaganda. Before I knew it, a 55-ish Hunter supporter across the aisle left his seat to walk over to us and lean intimidatingly into our faces, saying "So you think this is a bunch of propaganda do you??!" Startled, I stared at him. The lady piped up, "You bet it is!" and he returned to his seat.
Such are the passions of politics. It made me all the more aware of the perception we are contributing to in our zeal to share a message. It is difficult to contain my enthusiasm, especially as it contrasts to my previously dismal outlook. I understand wanting to scream "wake up!" from the mountain tops. Though we have the near-oldest candidate, he attracts the youngest and most enthusiastic/formerly disenchanted supporters, and I hope we don't alienate others and appear radical.
But isn't it more radical to support a big money, short-sighted, collapsing war economy than it is to bore one's friends with talk of the abuses of the Federal Reserve, IRS, and the increasing centralization of unquestioned authority? uh oh, there I go again. |

Why the rude remarks? I thought we were friends on a journey towards truth. Can't we just get along without these petty attacks and name calling?
I watched the video and thought it wierd. I just don't want to become a Mormon. So please stop with the snied remarks, because I'm fine with the faith I have and insulting me will not change my mind.

I'm enjoying this immensely.
I mean, watching the DemaGOP clustercopulation used to be the most fun as the cycle ran, but now that the Rockefeller RINOs are facing the first Goldwater-type challenge they haven't been able to suppress since 1980, there's some real entertainment value in following the normally staid Kabuki theater process by which the Republicrats pretend to choose a presidential nominee.

Well I must admit I was disappointed we didn't do a little better on Saturday. And, if truth be told, I'm not the only one who had a long ride back from Fort Worth on Saturday.
But with characters like Eddie and SJ Doc (above) it doesn't take long to get back into the groove. Truth is I love this campaign and all the great people I'm meeting. What a classic moment when Dick C. appeared on a video introducing the first "ronnie" at the Straw Poll and the hisses were quickly drowned out by the faithful applause. This is really what it is all about (I think). We've got Reagan who espoused both the Neocon and Paulite principles being adored by all. Ronnie I, a converted Democrat, believed we must win the Cold War to bring freedom to the East European masses. The ultimate hawk and big defense spender. So the Berlin Wall falls and now the Neocons are convinced this approach works. Paulites love the freedom and constitution message and the fact that Ron II was one of the first to support Reagan in 1976.
My opinion - why all the fuss over Ron I to start with. He was a much better actor than President. As I recall, he nearly bankrupted the country in the late 80's and the government grew with every speech he gave. The WOT? He couldn't have misread it any worse than Bush. Reagan employed a "cut and run" strategy in the ME but is still considered god-like. I don't get the comparison or the veneration paid to my compatriot from Dixon, Illinois. |
