Imagine It
Posted by: Hugh Hewitt at 10:57 AM

(DEAN BARNETT HERE)

As you all know by now, a terrorist plot in England was foiled in the last 24 hours. The plan was to blow up something like a half dozen passenger planes, perhaps over American cities. The British authorities characterized the plot as an effort to commit “mass murder on an unimaginable scale.”

What a poignant choice of words that is. One of the most important conclusions of the 9/11 forensics was that 9/11 was partly caused by our lack of imagination. We used to go to the airport and the airline personnel verified that we had packed our own luggage and that we had never let it out of our possession. The notion that terrorists would execute a suicide mission had never penetrated our collective consciousness.

We apparently didn’t care to imagine what incredible damage such an attack would cause.

HERE’S WHAT I’VE LEARNED from personal experience. As Soxblog readers know, I’m a 39 year old man with Cystic Fibrosis. For those of you not familiar with CF, 39 is pretty old for someone with the disease. I’m doing quite well now, but I’ve had some extremely rough patches and some very dark days in the not too distant past.

When you go through such times, the first instinct is to resist imagining the unimaginable. Human nature is to recoil from the worst; if there’s something that makes recoiling easy, it becomes all the more likely that you’ll choose to not face your unpleasant reality.

If you have a serious disease, you eventually wind up going one of two routes: One is that you confront your problems, deal with them in a hard-headed way and make peace with the hand you’ve been dealt. I call this dealing with your New Normal; the old normal was better, but the New Normal becomes your reality. It may be less than optimal, it may be downright dreadful, but it’s your new reality and you find a way to deal with it.

The other choice is to deny the situation. There are tons of ways to rationalize such a decision without using the pejorative term “denial.” You can defiantly say that you won’t let your condition rule your life. If you do, people will applaud your toughness. These are often the same people who always tell you how healthy you look, even when you look and feel like death warmed over.

So you live your life without accepting or dealing with your New Normal. And you reap terrible consequences.

AS FREE SOCIETIES, the Western democracies have a choice of whether or not face up to the existential challenge they face from Radical Islam. The lure of seeking an easy way out is almost irresistible. The siren song of sitting down and reasoning with the Hezbollahs and Ahmadenijads of the world is powerful. If we could just do something to convince ourselves that all is well and that there’s nothing to fear, life sure would be easier.

Just as is the case with an illness, there are a lot of people willing to tell us that our fears are overblown. If you want to believe that George W. Bush and the Patriot Act are the greatest threats to our way of life, you won’t have much trouble finding a professor on a nearby college campus to buttress your theory. If you want to think that there was nothing really going on in London to warrant any concern and all the news this morning is just Karl Rove’s response to Joe Lieberman’s defeat, you’ll easily locate a prominent blogger to offer his concurrence. (HT: Allah)

But it’s past time we face the facts and realize that this is our New Normal. It’s worse than the old normal, the one that we had before 9/11 when we felt completely safe even though we weren’t.

It’s time we stop having a sphere of things that are “unimaginable.” Let’s imagine airliners exploding over our cities. Let’s imagine a mushroom cloud over Tel Aviv. Let’s imagine a mushroom cloud over New York.

Let’s imagine how such things might happen. And then let’s resolve to stop them.

Dean this sort of "goal-negation" thinking is a recipe for a self-fulfilling prophecy and a tragic mis-use of our teleological gifts. It's the same mindset that inadvertantly led to the current explosion of animosity against America after the world rallied behind her post-9/11.

Does this mean we should ignore threats and worst-case scenarios?

Absolutely not--that would likewise be suicidal. The wisdom of our fathers says hope for the best and plan for the worst and they are right.

Can you even articulate what the world will look like when the War on Terror has been won?

Is it not a better use of your imagination and gifts to flesh out such a world and lead the drive to getting there?

Fear attracts mistakes in the same way that hope attracts solutions. Give your nightmares the respect they deserve: hear them out and take counsel from them, but don't put them at the head of the table.

Dealing vs. Denial
It occurred to me a year or so ago that the main difference between the political Left and the political Right is that the Left believes the war with Islamo-fascists is optional.

The "New" Normal
Dean,

It's amazing to see some of my own thoughts echoing through this article. Great job!

Since my diagnosis of MS two years ago, I have often thought of my condition as the new normal. I've also made the connection to our lives post-September 11th.

Fifteen years ago, a good friend of mine who was a police anti-terrorism expert told me that Americans would never tolerate the infringements on our liberty that being truly safe would require. He was right at the time.

After the WTC and Pentagon attacks, I thought he was wrong. Sadly, nearly five years have passed, and too many of my countrymen seem to have forgotten the risk. I pray I'm wrong about that.

The New Normal
I remember being at the Naval Academy and encouraging people (after we were attacked on September 11th, 2001, I hate the 9/11 moniker) to still fly and live life as they did before, any changes would be a victory for the terrorists. After being trained as an Anti-Terrorism Officer by the Navy, I know now that it's just not possible. We have to change the way we live in order to stop attacks. We should hold on to what we can, but we shoudl stoically accept what must be changed in order to provide defense.

Remember, this Radical Islam is afraid of one thing and one thing only: Failure

Humm...Someone with Guts... Someone with courage...Someone using their Brain...Someone I would be proud to know... Thank you for your commentary... Did you know that on top of the Dome of the Rock- that sits on the temple mount- Do you know what it says? It says that G-d has no son...This should be so ovious to all- exactly why have the Jews always been persecuted... Read the Bible- satan has nothing to lose - he will attempt to kill, steal, and destroy all of us...I pray for the Peace of Jerusalem, Unity in the Body of Yeshau/Christ and the Lost- the rapture of his church is imminent...

May the G-d of Abraham, Issac, and Jacob bless and protect you sir...

Respectfully,

The politics of fear...? The creativity necessary to imagine a false "new" normal would be better served on the right side of the true "new" normal, but that goes without saying I guess.

The past will never be the present...they need to let go. I'd like to be an ignorantly blissful child again, but I don't think that's in the cards; I'll have to check with Michael "I like it, I'll eat anything" Moore on it though.

Great post!!

Excellent point about being realists regarding these threats. In order to address them, however, we obviously need the appropriate people in the government who are willing to take the tough stands and necessary responses to confront these people. I'll bet the the people of CT are real glad today that Lamont is their Democratic nominee -- this incident should spur on CT voters to support the independent, Lieberman, who has the experience, acumen and ability to address a situation like this.

Global Warming Debate
The liberal left media is attempting to portray author of The Green Wave, Environmentalism and its Consequences, Bonner Cohen as a crazy and corrupt scientist because he states that the majority of climatologist are “agnostic” on the global warming issue. Cohen appeared on C-SPAN’s National Journal Wednesday morning. He states that the climatologists need to study the issue more and can not draw any firm conclusions, and any that do draw firm conclusions are doing it based on politics and unreliable computer models. Cohen presents the interesting argument that the so called “global warming” is actually just part of a long cycle of the earth warming and cooling naturally that scientist do not fully understand yet. The liberals in their rush to condemn Cohen managed to get the facts wrong about whom Cohen wrote the book for. The liberal blog at thinkprogress.org (http://thinkprogress.org/2006/08/09/vast-majority-climatologists/) accuses the National Center of Public Policy Research for publishing the book and supporting Cohen. While Cohen is a senior fellow at the National Center he wrote the book for Capital Research Center (who also published the book), a non-profit think tank in Washington DC. Check out Capitalresearch.org for more information. The National Center first broke this story with its own blog entry, http://www.nationalcenter.org/Blog.html.
