"Business dealings of Biden family could be problematic for him."
Posted by: Hugh Hewitt at 7:59 PM
From the Los Angeles Times:

When Joe Biden's brother and son wanted to buy a hedge fund company two years ago, they turned for financing to a law firm that had lobbied the Delaware senator's office on an important piece of business in Congress -- and in fact had recently benefited from his vote. The firm promised James and Hunter Biden that it would invest $2 million, and quickly delivered half of it.

That deal eventually fell through and the money was returned. But it highlighted the close ties that Joe Biden and his family have developed with SimmonsCooper, an Illinois law firm that specializes in asbestos litigation -- a multimillion-dollar line of business that was under threat in Congress.
In addition to providing financing for the hedge fund deal, SimmonsCooper picked the law firm of another of Biden's sons, Beau, to work with it on dozens of asbestos cases in Delaware. "It was only natural that we worked with my friend Beau Biden and his firm," said Jeffrey Cooper, former managing partner of SimmonsCooper.

There's lots more.  Read the whole thing.  Did Obama's team blow the vetting, or just assume that the MSM had done it during the primaries?

If McCain's veep is a good debater, expect this story to make its way into the showdown between the veep nominees.

What a hoot
I don't listen to Rush very often but caught a bit today while fetching some lunch. He was going on about Biden's support for the Bankruptcy Act of 2005, and suggesting it was a liberal bill and that he voted for it because his son was a lobbyist for MBNA. He added that this bill was responsible for the current mortgage crisis.

I admit, I was very disappointed and angered by Biden's vote for this bill at the time. It should be repealed. But I understand why he did it with thousands of constituents employed by the major credit card companies headquartered in Wilmington (for reasons going back to a 1978 Supreme court ruling on exporting interest rates and the astronomical interest rates of the 1980s). The bills (HR685 and S256) were both sponsored entirely by and supported primarily by Republicans (all 229 Republicans in the house voted for it as did all Republican Senators).

The only part Limbaugh got right was that Biden's son was at MBNA. It was actually as a "consultant", not a "lobbyist". As a former credit card company executive with over 25 years in the business, I was astounded by Limbaugh's outright fabrications on this topic. If this is indicative of the level of accuracy with which he pontificates on other topics, listeners who actually believe what he is saying could easily be the most misinformed people on the planet.

Appreciate your rationality, but your admonishing the loon that "your time would be better spent in a country where you could live in content(ment) and happiness" is wasted effort. The leftists in this country are incapable of contentment and happiness. They are ALWAYS angry about something, and would be lost without that anger.

To me, it appears the left is like a bunch of teenagers full of angst toward their parents (the right). Lose the angst and leftists (with a conscience) turn into conservatives, hence "neocons", hence leftists' particular visciousness toward that particular breed of the right.

Your point about moderation is well put.

Neo, you think that a return to sanity
equates to corporatism and militarism?

You may be right that the American people are willing to buy into more of that at this time. (It is, after all, the devil they know.)

But I don't think that means the end of the Democratic Party.

It just means that the process of the People waking up is taking a long time.

Eventually they are bound to stop chanting "thank you sir may i have another."

And stand up for themselves.

Fascism, you affable Left-Loonie, in this current world, is best illustrated by our Dark Age Death Worshiping Enemies. Al-Qaeda & their Offshoots. The Taliban. The Radical-Islamists who wish us DEAD. Further, Fascism was the Baathist Butchers' Pit of Saddam's Iraq. Fascism is Baathist Syria, Islamist Iran and PLO-Hamas Palestine. Hezzbollah sections of Lebanon.

THOSE are Contemporary Fascism. We Conservatives, Neoconservatives and Joe Lieberman GET IT. Your Morally Adrift Left-Hole In the Sand-Wishful Thinkers & Dreamers DON'T Get It. That you don't is inexcusable, shameful, maddening and sad. Your side MUST NOT have Executive Power. The American People will tell you that overwhelmingly in November. When your heads are handed to you--metaphorically, unlike what Fascists would offer--remember that Free Americans, practicing Liberty, gave you the lesson.

Morally, he's an average guy who got caught and endured five years of NV brutality. And, as Kerry put it so eloquently, Candidate McCain's main debate is with Senator McCain. He's not a maverick--he's a flunky. Everyone is getting wise to him. You guys got the media going for you, but this time, Americans are gonna see past the noise, past the flimflam. RE: McCain's legacy
It IS counterproductive to point out questionable Biden 'favors'. Whether true or not is irrelevant. Every congressman has contact with lobbyists.

Any possible 'payoff' is countered by the inevitable public perception that republicans are engaged in a smear, which will certainly be charged.

Fortunately, Biden will provide plenty of ammunition as he already has in the primaries.

Biden will be easy to goad into opening his mouth and sticking his foot into it. He can't help it. He's not in control of his ego and he speaks before thinking.

Good News from Hollywood
News from the Hollywood McCain fundraiser (this will make you laugh):

Moments later, Robert Duvall and James Caan walk slowly past the front desk, their younger wives following two paces behind. The two Hollywood veterans--who starred together in The Godfather--are laughing heartily as they passed. I interrupt them to ask what they thought about McCain. Caan is surprised that McCain was so funny, Duvall is not.

Duvall, who just finished doing the voiceovers for the McCain videos that will be show next week at the Republican National Convention, points to McCain's national security experience. "He's an American hero. He's got character. He's been around." Duvall pauses. "The other guy? I just don't know."...

Duvall then picks up our conversation from where we left it before the interruption. He is incensed by comments Gore Vidal made about McCain back in June. Vidal had questioned McCain's heroism. "Who started this rumor that he was a war hero? Where does that come from, aside from himself? About his suffering in the prison war camp?"

Duvall doesn't think much of Vidal, whom he called "an American icon-slash-dilettante." It's not only John McCain who could kick Vidal's a$$.

"His 96 year-old mother could beat the crap out of Gore Vidal with her shoe," Duvall says. "And you can quote me on that."

http://victorhanson.com/articles/hanson082208.html

Note: your link could be made about any country :)

We live in a world full of democracies which have varying degrees of capitalism and socialistic ideas. Due to culture difference, each democracy has it's own flavor.

Perhaps, America is not a flavor you like, and you might want to try another. It makes sense to me, that if you are lucky enough to be born in a free society in which you are disgruntled with, you have the opportunity to choose another free society that will make you happy.

America has a more conservative culture, and I think spending time trying to remake a civilization in the image of another is a time that is wasted. Your time would be better spent in a country where you could live in content and happiness.

We live in great times where free societies are abundant, and we can choose the one of our liking.

I was in India for 8 months training folks for new technologies two years ago. I talked to many people while I was there helping them.

America is the light on the hill, and America inspires people around the world to expect great things of themselves. It is something Americans should be proud of. The statue of liberty has real meaning...ask those folks in Georgia, Poland or the Ukraine.

The extreme left and extreme right seem to be so submerged in their own ideologies they have blinders on.

For example, historically, fascism comes from the left and not from the right. The American constitution was found on the right, and not on the left. Cuba, China, Soviet Union, Germany in WWI and WWII were\are governments created from the left.

On the far right, we see the pre-WWII isolationism, and yet we are in a world of globalization.

I don't know why you see fascism in America. I don't see fascism, and I can guarantee you that those folks I helped in India didn't see fascism either.

After almost 8 years in complete control of Washington what have they accomplished? You expect the American people to gloss over the last 8 years because Obama worked on a charitable board with a person who over 30 years ago set off some bombs that killed nobody and never intended to harm anyone (only people killed where idiots who made the bombs, they would call before exploding the bombs warning that an explosion was coming) Oh yea, you have some flimsy case on Rezko, in which Obama was never charged with anything, and a wacko Pastor. I'm non-partisan. I look at which candidate is closest to my values.

My biggest problem with Obama is his Chicago roots. Obama has had a number of opportunities in his life to walk down the center as a reformer, and he didn't do it. For example, there was a time in Chicago when dems and republicans came together to try and reform the Chicago machine, and Obama made the choice of siding with the Chicago machine. His friendships reflect his choices in life.

Amercia is right of center, and McCain is right of center, and I am center. Obama is to far to the left to be an option for me.

I can vote for a moderate, left of center democrat. If people would be moderate in there views we could work together, and McCain is right of center...the question is....where is the left of center democrat to create viable working partner? The socialistic lefties own the democratic party, and nobody can work with them. We have to come to the middle if we are going to compromise...extreme lefties just won't budge.

I would also like to clarify her pro-choice stance.

"In the past years NARAL has given her ratings of 0%, 7%, 20%, and 0%, indicating that her voting record mostly favored enacting proposed abortion restrictions."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kay_Bailey_Hutchinson

Kay is where I am on the abortion issue. I'm technically pro-choice, but I believe in restrictions.

Personally, I think a woman should take a day after pill if she doesn't want to get pregnant or abort early, and once the child is in the 2nd trimester it should be born unless the life of the mother is at stake.

Some folks here might even call this a pro-life stance, but Kay and I are for restrictions. Obama would let an infant die after birth...that's not pro-choice that is infanticide.

Lets hope that lobbyists make it into the debate. Because we can start with Charles Keating and not even get to McCain's running mate.
