Major liberal blogger calls for the resignation of Joe Biden?
Posted by: John Hanlon at 6:00 AM

It looks like Arianna Huffington, the co-founder of the Huffington Post, may actually be supporting the resignation of Vice President Joe Biden. In a new piece on her website, Huffington wrote about the reasons why Biden should abandon his current position.

In her piece, Huffington does not say that Biden should resign because of his performance as vice president or the verbal gaffes that he is known for. Rather, she states that he should resign out of principle if Obama ultimately escalates the War in Afghanistan.

She wrote the following about Biden:

What he must not do is follow the same weak and worn-out pattern of "opposition" we've become all-too-accustomed to, first with Vietnam and then with Iraq. You know the drill: after the dust settles, and the country begins to look back and not-so-charitably wonder, "what were they thinking?" the mea-culpa-laden books start to come out...

Obama may be no drama, but Biden loves drama. And what could more dramatic than resigning the vice presidency on principle? And what principle could be more honorable than refusing to go along with a policy of unnecessarily risking American blood and treasure -- and America's national security?

Huffington's article clearly underscores the growing split between many liberals and President Barack Obama's administration. That split can be seen on issues like the  a public option being a part of health care reform, gay marriage and the ongoing War in Afghanistan. Even with that ongoing split, Huffington's article qualifies as a major story that shows how big that split is now becoming even though President Obama has been in office for less than nine months.

Now, I disagree with Ms. Huffington on the war and I do not believe that Biden will seriously consider stepping down even if Obama provides all of the troops on the ground that McChrystal asked for. However, I do believe that President Obama is aware of the continued resistance he is facing from the left if he ultimately supports sending more troops to Afghanistan.

If the Obama White House had not realized how liberals would react if Obama decides to take the advice of General McChrystal, Huffington's post should provide a clue.
