Obama's Defense Better Than Ezra?

... Since Barack Obama couldn't really do it, if you're interested in hearing the liberal defense of Rev. Wright, Ezra Klein's outrageous comments, you can read Ezra Klein:
Does anyone believe a long association with Jerry Falwell's church would have done anything but help McCain in the Republican primary, and gotten Democrats tagged as anti-religion when they tried to point out Falwell's nuttiness in the general? It's fine to be a Christian extremist in America. It's fine to believe, and say publicly, that everyone who hasn't accepted Jesus Christ into their heart will roast in eternal hellfire, fine to believe that the homosexuals caused Hurricane Katrina and the feminists contributed to 9/11, fine to believe we must support Israel so the Jews can be largely annihilated in a war that will trigger the End Times, fine to believe we're in a holy battle with the barbaric hordes of Islam, fine to believe that we went to the Middle East to prove "our God is bigger than your God." What you can't believe is that blacks have suffered a long history of oppression in this country, that they're still face deep institutional discrimination, and that a country where 100 percent of the presidents have been rich white guys is actually run by rich white guys. More to the point, even if you do believe those things, you certainly can't be angry about it!
The above post illustrates an attempt to present a plausible, but misleading, argument ...
Ezra closes by saying, "... you certainly can't be angry about it!," implying that Rev. Wright is in trouble for being angry about injustice. But nobody is arguing that Rev. Wright can't -- or shouldn't -- be "angry." There is no doubt that Blacks have been oppressed. Anger is not the issue -- making outrageous statements --is the issue. And, in terms of the political importance, Obama's potential hypocrisy on being a "post-racial" candidate is the issue ...
By pointing to the "religious right," Ezra attempts to say, you guys do it, too! Instead of defending the indefensible, he wants to change the subject. But his analogy is false.
Whether you or I believe in it, or not, the Christian Bible specifically endorses the idea that there is but one way to heaven. In attacking the "religious right," Ezra invokes Jews, but Jewish-Americans are perhaps the most disturbed by Rev. Wright's statements. I might add that the Jewish faith which says, "Thou shalt have no other Gods before Me," could be construed by some as being offensive, intolerant, or exclusive. And I won't even go into other faiths, or how they may view non-believers as "infidels."
Most Christian Churches (African-American or otherwise), preach this doctrine -- if they are preaching the Bible. And though some may find this overly exclusive or even politically incorrect, it is part of Christian orthodoxy.
Liberation Theology, on the other hand, including Rev. Wright's belief that 9-11 was a just pay-back, or that AIDS was invented by the government to use on African-Americans, has no direct Biblical basis. By morally equating the two, Mr. Klein is attempting to muddy the waters.
In attempting to change the subject, he also cites things some controversial Evangelical pastors have said in the past (for example, homosexuals causing a hurricane, etc.), this is also a misleading argument and a false analogy. I can't recall any Republican having had such an intimate relationship with one of the aforementioned preachers (Rev. Wright married Obama and he literally was a member of his church for decades). In fact, if John McCain had been married by the late Pastor Falwell, and if Pastor Falwell had given him the title of his book, and if John McCain had for twenty years considered Pastor Falwell his spiritual mentor, then, I do believe it would be fair to assume that Senator McCain might, in fact, agree with the good -- or bad -- things Rev. Falwell believed in.
Barack Obama wouldn't be in trouble if Jesse Jackson said something outlandish -- he has no specific tie to him. He's in trouble because his close spiritual adviser made utterly-irresponsible statements.
Still, Ezra Klein has done us a service in giving us the real liberal argument in favor of Rev. Wright -- something Obama wasn't really able to do ...

Why credit a pipsqueak like Ezra Klein with anything like a coherent position? Kiein on Wright is a circular reference. |

Wright's Black Liberation Theology is a convenient mix of the Bible and propaganda from the Nation of Islam, and Farrakhan who mixes quotes from the Bible and Qur'an with similar paranoid black separatist rants.
Wright and Farrakhan are men of similar cloth, although Wright does not seem to espouse anti-Semitism as openly as Farrakhan.
Jews *should* be afraid. Whites *should* be afraid.
Although all views are needed to maintain a balance, some views are too vile and intellectually corrupt to be brought near the center of political power. Wright's views are a case study in such toxins. |

Please get something straight: Sen. Obama is not "in trouble" over Rev. Wright's impassioned rhetoric, REGARDLESS of what Hannity et al would like you to think. Just check out virtually every bit of coverage (baring the marginalized 19 percenters) on his well-received speech.
The problem that comes out of this dismal non-issue for the rightwing punditry and their brainwashed minions is that vilifying Obama's connection to Wright (while hypocritically ignoring McCain's endorsement from the loony anti-catholic zealot, Hagee) is that Obama scored an incredible homerun with his speech yesterday.
Thanks to Hannity's broken-record sanctimonious handwringing the good Senator needed to come out and show just what eloquence and heartfelt honor really looks like in a leader - something we haven't seen the likes of in at least 7 years - and more, if you want to include Bush I, Reagan and Nixon. Heck, I'll even throw in Carter and Clinton as well..... |

Do you have any more Jim Jones Kool-Aid.....OH YEAH!!!. Now my gut tells me that Obama does not have a secret agenda, however, his sense of judgement is poor. Therefor I don't trust him with this country. Isabella you need to get real, Obama has PO'd many Americans. He is the equivalent of a skinhead running for POTUS, and finding out that he attend Klu Klux Klan. Then finding out he attended meeting for 20 years and then saying that he did not think they were particularly controversial, and then saying that he did not go to all of the meetings, and then saying that that he was not there for any meetings that were particularly controversial, and then saying they never spoke to the Grand Dragon about me running for POTUS, and then realizing that there was an article in the New York Times a year before where the Grand Dragon talked about the particular conversation that took place between the two. And then listening to him say that he does not agree with all they stand for, but he did make the Grand Dragon his spiritual mentor, but since he is going to heal this nation and push for real change we should still vote for him, because he seems nice, and speaks oh so well. You would really have to bring it into question....his judgement. You can't tell me you would believe that he is colorblind. Also the big defference with all the references that the left is digging up like Falwell, Robertson and other white racist bigots, is that they are not running for President, Obama is, I just feel as if I need someone I can trust. |

As I've looked further into Black Liberation "Theology," it doesn't look like theology at all. It looks like Marxism, with the added twist that these Marxists also hate whites and Jews. |

You say that Obama is not in trouble because of his "impassioned, honest speech. Have you seen the latest polls which show that only people like yourself continue to support Obama. He is in such trouble that it is reported that his main support comes from radical blacks and college students. At least we can understand why college students support Obama - they are immature, and have been brain washed by liberal professors. |

"Impassioned rhetoric?" You call the anti-American, anti-white, anti-Jewish vitriol of Jeremiah Wright (who does not deserve to be called Rev. Wright, imo) "impassioned rhetoric?"
You only work to support my never-ending thesis: That American voters are essentially stupid. That you would support an inexperienced candidate who sat and listened to this drivel for 20+ years and apparently didn't think poorly enough of it to either leave or to challenge it, and now you label him as "grace and eloquence" -- all proves that little sheep like you will be lead blissfully to the slaughter.
By the way, if you think Wright's comments are "impassioned rhetoric," maybe he AND you should emigrate to Cuba and try to speak your mind there. See how far either of you would get with such impassionated rhetoric in Cuba. You'd be dead. |

According to the article above, Ezra Klein says that anger is not the issue. I totally disagree. Any minister that claims to preach the Bible, and stand before a congregation as a representative of God who is as angry and bitter as Obama's pastor apparently is cannot claim to know the Christ he preaches. What happened to the example Jesus left us? While hanging on a cross He prays, "Father, forgive them." My Bible says that we are to let that same mindset be our mindset. My Bible says that if someone suffers for something that is not their fault, yet takes it patiently, that that is acceptable in God's sight. It also says to not render evil for evil. It also says to lay aside all bitterness, anger, wrath, malice (ill will - like damning America?). Hmmm. And here is another big one the fine minister is missing (as well as all his supporters that are "people of colour" as they are called. The Bible says that we are to no longer view any other person on the basis of their flesh (whether male, female, Jew, Gentile, slave, free). Hmmm. So what Bible is the supposed "minister" of Obama preaching from? Apparently not the same one as I read; anger has no place in the life of a Christian because a root of bitterness springs up and becomes a toxin in the life of a believer that chokes out the gentleness, love, meekness, joy and all the things God blesses us with so that we can be a light to the world. My Bible says, "Do not be overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good". It seems that so much of our African-American population has fed the root of bitterness, and has been overcome by the evil that was done to them. I hope one day they will gain the victory over this evil because it is really hurting them. |
