Wednesday Night Stakes ...

After the second presidential debate passed without John McCain mentioning the name of Bill Ayers, Barack Obama noted that McCain, "wasn't willing to say it to my face."
Of course, the Townhall format was not particularly conducive to such controversy. Still, McCain's omission felt odd -- inasmuch as the McCain campaign had frequently referenced Ayers during the runup to the debate.
Presidential candidates typically delegate such attacks to surrogates -- while they stay safely above the fray. In 2004, it was outside groups who performed this function for both sides. Unfortunately for McCain, though, Obama has more money -- and there is no "Swift Boat" cavalry to rescue Republicans this cycle. And time is dwindling. And the economy is the big news. And the media isn't helping him. So McCain finds himself in an unfortunate position: If he wants this attack to have the chance to stick (or even be heard by the masses), he only has one more "event" between now and Election Day in which the eyes and ears of the world will be on him.
And so, it seems reasonable he should put all the cards on the table for this one last debate. Wednesday night is huge.
Of course, going after Obama personally is risky -- and could backfire. In the short-term, voters could punish him for "going negative." But candidates who are down in the polls don't have the luxury of playing it safe. I might also add that stasis is risky; there is a serious danger that if McCain fails to bring up Ayers for a third time, it will be perceived that he has come to terms with the fact that he will not win, and thus, wants to go down "gracefully".
If it is perceived that McCain has decided to cut his losses and go out quietly (in order to keep his reputation with the media intact), his supporters may decide they aren't going out on a limb for a guy who is sawing it off.
Wednesday night may tell us a lot.

What Sarah Palin gave John McCain on a silver platter he handed over to the first Marxist President of these United States-George Soros.

Where's the conversation? Obama talks about creating jobs. Crap...we've given our jobs away. That includes customer service jobs sent to India - it's absurd. If we started building nuclear power plants - they'd probably hire Mexicans. Americans need to look in the mirror - we've all gotten greedy and lazy - a bad combo. |
|
Where is the outrage? McCain may not be the sharpest crayon in the box but he is light years ahead of Obama. Where is the conservative angst and grassroots effort?
I think McCain doesn't meet the conservative agenda. I think conservatives are tossing him under the bus and waiting for the inevitable backlash against an ultra liberal. Happened to Bill Clinton and it will happen again.
Obama wins in 08. Congress goes republican in 10. Republicans sweep in 12. |

is one that has bounced around Washington for years. Whatever - his love of country, interest in doing what is best for his country, has come through it all in tact. He is a true patriot! Obama has associations that to say the least should be very, very worrisome to the American voter. His agenda is socialism - he is involved with and beholding to entities that are way out of the main stream. WAKE UP AMERICA!!! Senator John McCain will know how to handle all that is Obama - but I do think McCain is wondering how the heck this Obama got to be a candidate - 10 years ago TO MOST OF THE VOTING PUBLIC Obama would have been a joke - for some of us he remains just that - a joke. |

Politico.com and Telegraph.uk are both reporting that McCain has decided NOT to go after Obama on his associations in Wednesday's debate.
McCain won't mention Ayers and Rezko and especially not Wright. He's going to stay upbeat and focus on a positive plan for the economy.
And he'll let the American people decide who they want dealing with the economy--him or Obama.
And on that decision will rest the outcome of the election. And on virtually nothing else.

Only the first debate counted. Now no one is watching. |

You are an idiot and will be obamas helper in running this country into the ground and when he does you will lie to yourself and every one and blame some one else thats how you idiots operate. |
|
The country is going down the pan, and McCain should polish his statesmanship by blurting out ancient smears about some old prof?
Jeez, you GOP pod people are beyond desperate these days.
I doubt even the typical media-addled ignoramus of a floating voter would have much trouble spotting the insult to his intelligence and sense of proportion in that one.
For McCain to abstain from such nonsense is to his credit. God save him from his self-appointed little helpers.

I hope that mccain takes obama on for once, and I really hope that he ask obama what he thinks about meeting irans president without conditions, especially since amahdinajad just set froth HIS pre-conditions we must meet prior to talks, oh lets first leave the middle east totally and denounce isreal and turn our back on them, sound like a plan and would obama still meet with him now, or just walk away from everyone so he could .I also hope mccain calls obamas tax cut what it really is WELFARE and that he'll just take from the HAVES and give to the HAVENOtS which is socialism pure and simple. |

Nero:
Go drink your Socialist Kool-Aid....Check the press moron...it is liberals supporting Obama calling McCain a Segregationlist....it is Obama supporters threatening a hotel business in Maryland of a man who supports McCain...it is Obama supporters who crashed windows of a GOP office and painted Republicans stand for Slavery on the doors....yes your Brain Dead Liberals are scum and worthless...I would bet you are one of the fools that supports ACORN another Dem front group that specializes in FRAUD and CORRUPTION!!!
Oh! and I forgot was it not Obama's friend in Missouri who threatened anyone for running ads criticizing Obama? And what about Obama's campaign threatening the NRA? Like a good little liberal you could not see the forest for the trees....go look in the mirror you hypocrit!!
You and your liberals are THUGS plain and simple! |
|
Matt, I agree that Ayers is a big issue but to say that that is the one things McCain needs to do is just plain wrong. Ayers should be bought up by McCain but in the context of Obama's Social Re-Engineering and Blantant Liberal and Socialist beliefs. Obama's pals around with scum but for the purpose of Political Advantage. That is what McCain needs to do...show Obama as nothing more than a Liberal, America Hater and Big Government Wonk!!
Tie to the economy and social views, as well as, personal security and the American way of life: Capitalism and Freedom. Americans do not want Socialism and they do not want Radicals in the Government who hate Capitalism and America. That is how he ties it...to the ECONOMY!!
McCain's speech today in VA was very good....He drew a great contrast to Obama on the Economy and on being a Proud American. He spoke well about Cutting Taxes, Helping Businesses, Strong Military, Strong Security, Attacking Pelosi and Reid, as well as Washington and SPENDING!! He looked energetic and I liked his vision...it was a change for McCain...one he needed to make. Conservatives need to know that McCain must stay big on cutting taxes, smaller government, strong Military, values, love of country and strength of Character. McCain did a good job today!! He showed LEADERSHIP WITH PASSION and that was a great change! |

Why wasn't the "townhall format conducive" to McCain slurring Obama to his face? And let's face it, McCain HASN'T actually stayed "above the fray" now, has he? No. Instead, McCain rambled aimlessly around the townhall stage as though he were the main attraction, speaking to HIS crowd - only to be smacked down with the realization that he wasn't in front of his angry mob, but a grouping of independent voters who don't froth at the mouth and laugh at his stupid jokes. He wilts when he is not the in the partisan bubble - just like Bush did/does.
He was smart not to "go there" regarding the lies and baseless attacks about Obama's ties in a way that a wolf is "smart" not to pick a fight with a lion. He KNOWS Obama is armed to the teeth with McCain's ties and nefarious associations, and he doesn't want to have it come out in front of a record number of viewers who might actually CARE to know how corrupt the McCain background is. It's hard to cover up the truth if you can't handle the audience response - and McCain has shown us just how ineffectual he is in handling an audience - even one cut from his own partisan pool of lizard brains. |

If BO would answer questions about the many radical people that he has met and in some cases worked for or with he could possibly stem these accusations. He has changed his statement on ACORN on his fact check site. What is the truth. How has his relationships influenced how he thinks and how he will govern. There is only a short period where he has been in office with no real signs of leadership except to raise taxes. |
|
|
Or, the American Public might find out that this smear campaign is bogus. What happens to McCain if Obama gives him the smackdown over this issue? As in: you are a hypocrite and a liar. |
|
|
It is not do or die. God, you make it sound like he is at the end of the rope. Yes, people will be watching and listening but the doubt the McCain camp has so successfully put out there is working better than his words at the debate. The media is looking for controversy, one sound bite so they can make themselves feel better on Thursday morning and confirm "it's over". Relax, the public makes the decision not the ones with the microphones and cameras. |
