With programs like that, we get highly qualified doctors and lawyers working in settings that ordinarily could not afford to hire them. The doctors and lawyers work in settings that their loan obligations ordinarily would not allow them to work in.
These are terrific programs, similar to some extent to a barter system. Over time, this type of program will allow doctors and lawyers to live more moderate income lives, and thus our society would, frankly, be improved. I mean, do any of you think a broker at Goldman Sachs is worth tens of millions per year? I mean, really? Or a doctor or lawyer making $2 or $3 million? |

In this bite, Clinton says the economy will fail if we fail to reform healthcare. The reality is that we not only didn't reform healthcare, the economy went on to enter one of its most robust periods in the last few decades.
And now, the Dems are repeating the same failed warning about healthcare and the economy. Here's hoping for once history repeats itself. |

the reality is this--had Clinton been seen as a strong president--as Obama is, getting his agenda passed, pragmatically--Dems would not have lost as they did in 1994. Most Americans want health care fixed. I pay about $20,000 a year for insurance for the three of us. On top of that, we have $12,000 deductible. Few of our doctors take the insurance at all, they only send their bills in for us. And we can afford this. It is a ridiculous system.
In the next 10-20 years, the practice of medicine, law, banking will change. People will earn decent livings, but not the high life that has evolved in the past 20 or so years. We'll end up subsidizing more doctors and lawyers through law school (tuition at CA's premier law public school was $1000 per year in 1976, will be $51,000 in 2012, hardly due to inflation alone). So, if you don't want to have super loans tying you down, you'll practice pro bono law, or maybe get a private law firm to subsidize you, pay you less for 10 years while you repay your loans. Same for doctors.
