Put Down the Book and Get Back to Work

For those of you who don't know, Nancy Pelosi's book, Know Your Power, A Message to America's Daughters, reportedly sold 2,737 copies during its first week of sales. Now I'm not here to knock her for writing a book; in fact, I give her credit for undertaking such a task. The problem I have is with her promoting it when she should be not only working with Congress, but LEADING it to pass a substantive piece of energy legislation.
Explaining the book’s poor performance, a source close to her was quoted as saying:
"The speaker was pre-occupied with house business last week. She has now turned her focus to promoting this extraordinary book...doing local signings and speeches. I think we'll see an uptick."
WOW!
So, are we to take from that that before this summer recess she'd led Congress to accomplish so much, she now deserves time to promote her book to enhance sales??? Not only is the premise wrong – Congress has accomplished nothing – but the ensuing statement is, too.
Partisanship aside, I think we can all agree that Pelosi should get back to work in Washington to deal with our energy crisis. Book sales are the last thing she should be concerned about.
At least, we now see crystal clear the priorities of the Speaker of the House. No wonder she’s leading what is known as the "Do-Nothing Congress."

Michele - You are one of the biggest shills for the Oil industry I've ever seen. Give it a rest. |
|
Why do so many people here ignore Rep. Bachmann's voting record; she has been terrible on the energy issue and has ignored it completely until gas prices jumped.
Check Rep Bachmann's voting record; my gosh she is even opposed to energy savings bills she voted on.
One of you said if it is a GOP bill Pelosi is against it.
Bachmann is just as guilty of this mindset as Pelosi.
I do agree that there are many in both political parties guilty of this.

We all know that polls make it pretty clear how the public feels about voting for Republicans to solve the energy problem.
Congress as an institution polls very low (the out-of-power GOP is fond of talking about that) but the Republicans in Congress poll even lower than the Democrats (the GOP fans *never* talk about that.)
If the GOP was serious about taking measures to control gas and energy prices, they would have done so when they were in power. The price of gas began its historic climb while the GOP still ran Congress and they did nothing to stop it.
It continued to climb under the Dem Congress--but if you blame them when the gas prices go up, why aren't you giving them credit when the gas prices go down, as they've been doing for the last few weeks (without the new drilling the GOP says is the only solution.)
The GOP should stop pretending that they run the oil industry and can set prices (it's actually the other way around, the oil industry runs *them* and sets *their* prices.) Staying in Washington an extra couple of weeks for photo ops of them "pretending to work" on a problem they couldn't solve when they actually were in power--is not interesting or persuasive, it's just kind of sad. And the polls on the GOP's reputation will tell you exactly how sad that is.
If you are interested in why the remaining supporters of the GOP are viewed as suckers or buffoons, read Paul Krugman's column in the New York Times. Congresswoman Bachmann is mentioned by name. |
|
I'm sure Nancy will come up with a Fairness Doctrine for publishers. She will force them to duct tape her book to O'Reilly's.
Maybe Hillary Swank will make it into a movie.

I was reading everyones comments. and I think that most of you are missinformed. the oil companys leases that everyone says thay should be drilling on that thay already have are eather not profitable or held up in court by enviromentalist. And as for the there profits how much of the $4 gas does the goverment get? without doing anything. oh wait thay went on vacation! so thay did do something thay are blocking the free flow of the fuel that has built this great country, lights are homes, keeps us warm in the winter, and cool in the summer. |

Hey Maggie, tell us what Congress did in the 6 years previous to the past two--you remember, the years the Republicans were in charge? Be specifi. Let's hear all the GOP-led Congress did for energy. |
|
Is it too much to ask of our Congress to do their job? They haven't done anything in 2 years and are not going to until after the election. It will get worse after McCain takes office. Nasty Pelosi will fight every single thing the GOP puts forth and accomplish nothing again. When the word compromise is used it means the Gop took it on the chin.Nasty should have gone back to work but...wait she hasn't worked for 2 years because she was writing a loser book. P.S. Note that trolls are rejects from their own crappy sites. |
|
Republicans and Democrats alike have been selling us out for way too long to foreign leaders, to illegal immigrants, to big business, etc. and for nothing more than all the power and money they can accumulate for themselves. They are a disgrace to the American way of life, and guilty of treason against all Americans.
I recently read this definition of a politician somewhere:
poli - means 'many' tic - is a 'blood-sucking animal'. 'nuff' said? |
|
I read today that the final sales number was 2,736, not 2,737.
One person returned the book and asked for their money back.
True story. |

Hopefully staying home with her children and keeping her Liberal, elitist, America-hating mouth shut! |

Why is Bachmann spending her time worrying about Nancy Pelosi's book sales? Why isn't she doing something about gas prices? Can't she go back to ANWR and punch a few oil wells herself? I'm disappointed Michele has abandoned her mission and instead been wasting her time reading Publisher's Weekly. Why, she almost sounds like a hypocrite!
Michael--excellent summary of Bachmann's horrible voting record on energy. What do you expect--the closest she came to energy issues before this summer was trying to reimburse her husband over $6,000 in "mileage expenses" on her campaign. |
|
Bachmann came up with this fantasy that Democrats are happy that the Bush Administration and their lackeys like herself have put the economy in the toilet:
"This is their agenda," Bachmann states bluntly. "I know it is hard to believe, it's hard to fathom -- but this is 'mission accomplished' for them," she asserts. "They want Americans to take transit and move to the inner cities. They want Americans to move to the urban core, live in tenements, take light rail to their government jobs. That's their vision for America."
Let's see, how many code words can we spot in there, Michele? What is Michele so afraid of in the Big Bad Urban Core? People of color, perhaps? Poor people? In tenements? Unbelievable. |

On a funnier note, the comedy website 236.com had a great feature on Nancy Pelosi’s new book: http://www.236.com/news/2008/08/07/post_51_8187.php |

It’s the Bush Energy Policy, Stupid…Policies That Were Rubberstamped Under 6 Years of GOP Rule in Congress |
|
Bachmann voted against comprehensive energy legislation that includes the first new vehicle efficiency standards in 32 years, saving families up to $1,000 a year at the pump. [HR 6, Vote 1140, 12/6/07; HR 6, Vote 1177, 12/18/07]
Bachmann voted against tax incentives for renewable electricity, energy and fuel from America’s heartland, as well as for plug-in hybrid cars, and energy efficient homes, buildings, and appliances – four times in just the last 18 months. [HR 6049, Vote 344, 5/21/08; HR 5351, Vote 84, 2/27/08; HR 6, Vote 1140, 12/6/07; HR 2776, Vote 835, 8/4/07]
Bachmann voted against investments in energy efficiency and renewable energy, including solar, biofuels, hydropower, and geothermal energy, as well as new vehicle technology and energy efficient buildings and homes, with a 50 percent increase over the President’s request. [HR 2641, Vote 641, 7/17/07]
Bachmann voted against landmark energy efficiency standards for buildings, homes, appliances, and lighting to save consumers $400 billion through 2030. [HR 6, Vote 1140, 12/6/07; HR 6, Vote 1177, 12/18/07]
Bachmann voted against requiring that 15 percent of American electricity come from renewable energy by 2020. [Amend to HR 3221, Vote 827, 8/4/07]
Bachmann voted against responsible drilling in Alaska in the National Petroleum Reserve (NPR-A). [HR 6515, Vote 511, 7/17/08]
Bachmann voted against requiring oil companies to drill on 68 million acres they already control. [HR 6251, Vote 469, 6/26/08]
Bachmann voted against releasing a small portion of the government’s oil stockpile, the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, to bring down gasoline prices. [HR 6578, Vote 527, 7/24/08]
She's on the bandwagon now though; oh yeah she's up for election

The Republicans had six full years of control of the US House, Senate and Presidency and did nothing on energy or anything else for that matter. They did nothing substantial to open up offshore drilling, nuclear power, wind etc. President Bush even made it more difficult to drill off shore of Florida when Jeb was governor.
Bachmann’s late entry into the energy debate is a political gimmick; her voting record on energy proves it.
|
|
|
that's why we can't put the same sorry excuses BACK in office. We need cons this time round. |
|
Isn't it ironic that Rep Bachmann complained about Pelosi being in session five days a week when first elected and now she is complaining about a recess.

Obama has done nothing to harm Repubs or America yet. Can you say the same thing about your man Maverick? You people have lost it. |
|
|
You had it right, McCain is a Trojan Horse Democrat, the R jersey fools some people. |
|
Why do you hold a legal industry, producing a much-needed commodity for a willing public in such high disregard? Do you not understand or appreciate just how many things you personally use on a daily basis are made from "dirty" oil?
And what is your alternative that can magically transform all our transportation needs overnight? What about the infrastructure of fueling stations, refineries, storage capacity and similar facilities that would need to be replaced?
Kim, you must have too much time on your hands as you find it necessary to post on TH daily, thus exposing your lefty musings for all at which to marvel and shudder! |
|
I think you mean when the choice is a moderate conservative like McCain, or a liberal inexperienced candidate like Obama, then things are good for McCain.
Becareful or someone might mistake you for Kimbicile! |
|
when things are bad for America (gas, terror) things are good for Dem/libs like McCain...
and is someone going to read the book to Barbara Boxer? Poor thing. |
|
|
At least he walked his round and did not use the cart. And those golf carts are electric too. |

Dean Barnett speaks:
Above is the McCain campaign’s new ad. Not that anyone asked my opinion, but I like it. Facing an unpleasant reality, there’s no way a normal Republican would have had a chance in the 2008 general election. The Republican brand at this moment is badly damaged and in disrepute. It’s something of a miracle that John McCain became the party’s nominee. It’s a happy miracle, since he’s the only nominee who would have had a chance.
The Mavericky heresies that McCain has indulged in over the past seven years are precisely what make him electable. And though the Maverick thing sounds a bit trite, the fact that he has so many admirers on the other side of the aisle effectively refutes the potentially lethal “McSame” attack line that depicts him as George W. Bush’s political twin.
McCain and his campaign have made some nice progress over the past week. Now they can really shake things up and get ANWR drilling right. Death to the Caribou!

Nancy Pelosi did not write the book. She had a ghost writer do it for her! |
|
[I think we can all agree that Pelosi should get back to work in Washington to deal with our energy crisis.]
I just as soon have them stay away. Send the Pres and Veep on vacation too, and tell the Court there's a Early Bird Special at Applebee's and lock the doors behind them.
For some reason, I think we'd all be better off. |
