Disappointed
Posted by: Amanda Carpenter at 10:36 AM
Tim Russert didn't ask Obama a single question about capital gains during the full-hour interview. Sigh.

In an investment market...
...that's getting more global every day, in every way, there are few things dumber than raising the tax on investment income, making investment less flexible. Where did this bright idea come from anyway? Did Robert Mugabe's economic adviser come up with this plan?

No Kidding
I missed the first minute, but it appears that Russert kicked off with Wright issues. I was disappointed he allowed Obama to wonder off into flag-lapel and hand-over-heart meanderings about his patriotism.

Screw that. I still want to hear Obama explain why he did nothing for 20 years (aside: funny how Obama always lengthens it to 30 years when nobody cares what happened before Obama had contact with Wright). I understand that Wright had an extraordinary outreach ministry and that the majority (maybe vast majority) of his sermons were entirely acceptable. But I've seen the extended version of "the government lies" sermon (aside: Subject #1 for fall ad campaign) in which over and over and over again Wright implored his congregants, "Turn to your neighbors and say, 'The government lies.'" Sorry, but the games over. If Obama never had the courage to confront Wright in the face of these and too many other intellectually indefensible statements, he has NO business running for presidency. City council, state senate, even U.S. Senate (debatable), fine. President, no way.

As for capital gains taxes, that was a joke. Russert spent an inordinate amount of time on the nonsense gas-tax holiday issue. Give Obama some time to state his higher-ground stance (and I think it's dopey policy), but it's a short-term nonsense. What about Obama's complete screwing up of tax-policy questions in the ABC News debate? In the Chris Wallace interview last week, his only improvement is that he seemed to regurgitate a talking-points outline that he'd been given. He doesn't understand too many things, domestically and internationally.

I'm unwilling to HOPE that he'll CHANGE his lack of comprehension of critical issues.

Unasked on economy
Basically he got Obama to say that he thought only demand reductions would be effective to reduce the high price of oil, but only supply increases would be effective on the high price of food. Which is it Senator, are you a supply sider or demand sider? Russert could have tied the back-to-back topics together, and basically ended any serious thinking votes for Obama (if there is such a thing.)
