National Review & Mitt Romney ...
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 10:00 AM
Over at NRO, Peter Beinart and Jonah Goldberg debate whether or not Romney should give the speech.  Meanwhile, Mark Hemingway writes the speech Mitt should give in Texas.

... Speaking of Romney and National Review, I'm hearing from a pretty reliable source that National Review is very close to officially endorsing Mitt Romney ...

Update:  I was able to email with Kathryn Lopez of NRO.  K-Lo told me:

we talk about lots of possibilities for corporate statements everyday here about many an issue. there's nothing imminent about anyone, though we have a fine NIE editorial today (we're not endorsing Ahmadinejad).

yes, we're talking about possibly making an endorsement of someone in primary season, but nothing is decided.

Wow
That speech was awesome. I found it very inspiring. The only problem now is that Mitt can't use it word for word.

Too bad, because I think it explains exactly the role of faith in our country.

NRO Endorsement
Does the NRO normally endorse a GOP candidate for the Republican nomination? I cannot recall them doing so in the past.

Sample speech very good
I thought the sample speech was an excellent example of the type of speech Romney will probably give. I think if he goes that route he will probably diffuse a lot of criticism. I am Mormon so I don't have a problem with his religion. I would like to know what people who oppose him base don his religion and others think about a speech like the one suggest by the NRO columnist.

Really?
Call me dumbfounded. My reading of National Review's attitude is at very best lukewarm for Romney. Only Kathryn Jean Lopez is openly sympathetic to him. Jim Geraghty doesn't lean one way or another; William F. Buckley has ignored him; Deroy Murdock hates his guts; Byron York is in love with Giuliani (just a sampling). While it's true that articles favorable to Romney are occasionally published in NRO, they are almost always written by people outside the NRO staff. I think they do it to be able to say their coverage is balanced.

I'll believe it when I see it.
