How Jesse Helms Gave us Reagan

"The George Bailey test" is a way of measuring the impact a person has had on the world. It comes from the movie "It's a Wonderful Life," of course, which starred Reagan's friend Jimmy Stewart. The test asks the question; what would the world be like if you had never been born? When you ask that question regarding Jesse Helms, you begin to see what a dramatic impact he had on the U.S. -- and the world.
A lot has been written about Jesse Helms' senate career these last couple of days, but it should also be noted that without Helms (and the support of his friend Tom Ellis), we quite possibly would never have had a President Reagan.
In 1976, Jesse Helms (then the junior Senator) first helped persuade Reagan to seek the presidency, and then engineered a stunning come-from-behind victory for Reagan in North Carolina. This was Reagan's first victory over Ford, and it probably kept Reagan from dropping out of the race. What is more, the win led to more wins and gave Reagan the momentum to go all the way to the convention, nearly wresting the GOP nomination away from sitting President Gerald Ford.
Because of Helms' support, Reagan left the '76 campaign with the momentum and clout that would propel him to win the nomination in '80. The truth is, we owe a debt of gratitude to Helms for everything Reagan was able to accomplish.
In fact, his early support of Reagan was so significant that even if you put aside his entire Senate career and accomplishments -- which were substantial -- Helms legacy would still be remarkable. Without Helms' support in '76, we likely wouldn't have gotten Reagan in '80.
Another interesting thing to note about Helms is that he started out as a reporter. Interestingly, Paul Weyrich -- a founder of the modern-day conservative movement -- also started out as a reporter. It is ironic (but probably not surprising) that these men -- along with a movie star president -- were able to take on the media elites in the 60s, 70s, and 80s -- and often win.

was a fine man and a great patriot that this nation owes gratitude. RIP.
The people who are damning him wouldn't make a pimple on his backside and as far as I am concern, can go straight to hell. Indeed, that is probably where they will wind up. |

Conservatives are the epitome of fascism, hate mongering, war, fear, ignorance, intolerance, and bigotry. These terms describe Jesse Helms perfectly and anyone else that's so blind they don't want to see that the man was a racist, fascist, pig. Now that he's dead he's supposed to this great leader and patriot of American values...NOT! He's just a DEAD racist, fascist, pig. He upheld and supported all that is shameful, disgraceful, and despicable about America. I hold no malice towards anyone who doesn't rightfully earn it. As far as I'm concern each and every person on Earth is my brother and sister, and I have love for every human being until they show they want no such sentiment. I wish that Robert Mugabe could join him down there, along with J. Edgar Hoover, Adolf Hitler, Judas Iscariot, and many others, I'm sure the people of Zimbabwe will feel the same way as the people here victimized by the politics of Jesse Helms. |

The difference between Reagan and Helms is the difference between a conservatism of hope and a conservatism of resentment.
There are, I have little doubt, literally millions of Americans who would be conservatives today if not for the snarling visage of Jesse Helms.

My Pet Goat, Kimberly, jnik, riceroni:
Your asinine, vile and ludicrous comments prove that what has been said about the liberal fascist doctrine is true, racism-bigotry-insanity run rampant in liberal minds and radical liberalism is a mental disorder of the highest order. |

Amazing, all the weird creatures who have shown up here to post.
Just a note to all you foul pieces of human garbage who are using the occasion of the passing of the great American patriot, Jesse Helms, to once again attempt to sully his good name. I quote the 70’s TV character Maude: “God’ll get you for that.”
As if we needed yet another reminder of the soulless inhumanity of the left.

to the family of this vile, despicable, racist, bigot, homophobe at the time of their loss. |

Although controversial, Senator Jesse Helms was always a good steward when it came to looking after American interests. For so long, Senator Helms held up the status of China as most favored nation trading status. The Free Trade cartel club was furious with Helms for all of those years and especially his tight reins on spending tax payer dollars.
Helms went after the NEA and UN pork barrell projects and always uncovered the smut and dirt no one was willing to talk about. He stood up to nominees by both Republican and Democratic administrations and always did his utmost to protect the unborn.
Its funny to see all the RINO republican laud Helms who would be rolling over in his grave at this moment as the Republicans go down in history as one of the biggest spending parties in America.
Helms hired civil rights advocate James Meredith and in 1962 he and his wife adopted a boy with cerebral palsy after learning he had no home and no where to go.
In 1983, Senator Helms was enroute to South Korea with Congressman Larry McDonald who was ushered onboard to another plane. McDonalds plane was shot down over Sakhalin Islands by the Soviets and to this day there have been reports that the Russians still hold Americans from the shotdown flight...no bodies were ever retrieved but the luggage was in tact and witnesses claimed that the plane landed and was then pulled out to sea after taking the passengers to a gulag.........no one will ever be sure if McDonald is still alive or died. Senator Helms fought tirelessly to find out what had happened to the Congressman from Georgias 7th Congressional District.

I'd say the "old" Robert Byrd it would, but just because Robert Byrd USED TO BE a Klansman and a racist mean that Jesse Helms wasn't? Of course not, at least before leaving this earth Robert Byrd is trying to make a change and difference for the better for the American people and humanity period. Jesse Helms til the day he died held onto his racist, hate mongering position. So I'd say Pernell's post sums up Jesse Hemls's legacy pretty accurately. |

Was that Robert Byrd you described? Sounded a lot like him. |

He represented everything that was ill, wrong, and despicable, about America, and thank God he's one more cancer upon American politics and society removed. Because of Jesse Helms and those like him, America have a shameful era that it will take many millenniums to live down. I guess people who released attack dogs, mowed down people with high pressure fire hoses, beat them with billy clubs, bats, golf clubs, threw rocks, bricks, and bottles at peaceful protester which not a single one showed any aggression, did anything illegal, had not a single weapon amongst them, they received this violent barbaric treatment for wanting the right to vote, sit at a lunch counter and have a meal, drink from descent clean water fountain, use a clean restroom, browse and shop in a store, any basic human right that whites wouldn't have demanded themselves. Don't be so quick to judge and take a position until you've played the game in a different uniform. Let's not even talk about myself, my brother who is a career Marine, how does it make him feel to have laid down his life to protect the freedoms of someone like Jesse Helms, someone who would have him be used for less than what a farm animal amounts to. Someone who doesn't want him educated, or prosperous in any form or fashion. Someone who sees him less than human, someone who hold such contempt and malice towards him for nothing more than not being white. If that's not evil, if that's not being "a bad person" you tell me what the heck is? |

Thank you for your accurate observations, and I also hope many rise in his place. |

Jesse was a true American patriot: sincere commitment to the constitution, limited government, national sovereignty, and individual freedom.
His critics only highlight their kennel-fed lack of intelligence in repeating left-wing canards. They believe he was a racist, but reverend Wright is a man of God; they believe taxing "the rich" will balance the budget, yet opening the borders to illegals has no fiscal impact; they believe abortion is a constitutional right, but gun ownership is a crime; and they believe themselves instead of reading the facts. They are angry, empty, and pitiable.
Lemmings being mislead, just as the neocons have confused the right wing. Jesse was not confused; he was on point, committed to the constitution, and unafraid of public liars.
The bigoted quislings on the left cannot understand that patriotism, truth, and honor. |

....the red menace is displaying their typical classlessness upon the passing of a man who served his country for an entire lifetime. The recent passing of Tim Russert gave evidence that Conservatives behave with, at the very least, better manners. This display of lefty fangs is more than a little proof that the Senator accomplished much during his life, and anyone who antagonizes these human vermin is aces in my book. God Bless America, and God bless men like Jesse Helms. May a thousand rise in his place.... |

"Being a racist doesn't mean you are a bad person. It just means you are a racist." -Ken
So I guess inciting and conspiring mass murder, doesn't make Charles Manson a bad person it just makes him a murdering, sociopathic loon. But not a bad person. Give me a break, so hating someone simply for the pigment of their skin, without knowing them personally, bound them to second class citizenship, give them substandard education and employment, and minimal opportunity if any to advance and succeed in any sector. I agree affirmative action has outrun it's course and usefulness, but let's not forget why it was necessary in the first place. It was because of the injustice in workplace hirings and advancement opportunities. It's laughable how you conservative hypocrites come here and try and defend this decrepit evil old goat. He was a very bad person indeed. I'd say the black congressmen and senators who didn't make him crap his teeth when he whistled Dixie when they got on the elevator are to be commended. He represented everything shameful and wrong in America. |

Educated people are well aware of the many accomplishments of the late Sen. Jessie Helms.
As a member of the Senate Foreign relations committee, his unwavering opposition to oppressive communist regimes and the civil freedoms they oppose is well documented. His opposition to tax and spend policies of the federal government often put him in the position of being the only voice of reason when hugh wasteful spending bills came before the Senate.
Jessie was also a well known racist. He has made several statements to that effect. There were reports that he would often begin whisling "Dixie" when Black Congressmen or Senators would enter the Capital Elevator.
Being a racist doesn't mean you are a bad person. It just means you are a racist.
Bill Clinton is a well known sexist. This doesn't mean he is a bad person. It just means his opinion of the value of women is not mainstream.
Many liberal politicians believe minority groups are not able to succeed in the U.S. without special laws giving them an advantage in the free market place.
Again this does not mean they are bad people. It just means they have a low opinion of the abilities of various minorities to succeed.
Many members of these minority groups are offended at the suggestion that they somehow could not or did not succeed without some affirmative action quota system. They understand that hard work, dedication, and yes, some good fortune got them to where they are.
Instead of blaming others for their failures, they are grateful for the opportunity to succeed under our capitalistic system. The only system ever created by man that employees 95% of its citizens. Socialist Europe struggles to employ 75 to 85% of its citizens. |

I really don't understand the degrading comments by people who never have even met the man. I personally had never met him either, but I have only observed over that past 40 years the good results of this dedicated American. |

Yet another one of the seminal 20th century conservatives dies. Into the void comes a new generation, calling themselves conservative, but are merely Roosevelt worshipers.
Reagan, Buckley, and Helms are being replaced by those they fought against: big government statists. It will probably take another generation before their excellence is widely appreciated again. |
