McCain Throws Gramm Under Bus?
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 2:05 PM

Bosom buddies no more?

John McCain just wrapped-up a press conference, responding to former senator (and McCain economic adviser) Phil Gramm's recent controversial comments about the recession being psychological.  Gramm also went on to say that we are a "nation of whiners."

Of course, every economic downturn has a psychological component attached to it, but this is, at the very least, bad politics.

During that presser, McCain fielded a question regarding what role Gramm might play in a McCain administration.

McCain responded to the query by saying Gramm might be a good Ambassador to Belarus -- though he also added that the people of Minsk might object from that.  This, of course, is tantamount to banishing him to the political version of Siberia.

Was McCain just kidding?  My guess is that it was a joke which betrayed McCain's real anger at Gramm.  McCain would understandably be upset by this gaffe, as it serves to take the focus away from the Jesse Jackson story.  It also takes the focus off of the recent news that McCain's fundraising is doing well.  What is more, it hurts McCain on the economy -- an issue he can ill afford to take a hit on.

Throughout the campaign, McCain and Obama have both had little patience for supporters, staffers, and advisers who have caused them trouble.  In most cases, these folks have been quickly -- and unceremoniously -- ushered out of the campaign spotlight.

The potential that Gramm could be on the "outs" would be particularly significant, because -- unlike the other examples of McCain friends who have been banished -- McCain and Gramm have been very, very close.  During an early blogger conference call, McCain cited Gramm as the kind of person he would consider to be his running mate.  Gramm was the only person mentioned by name.   It will be interesting to see whether or not Gramm is permanently banished to Belarus, or if he earns his way back into McCain's good graces.

This goat-feeding business....
....is another fine example of why politcal correctnes needs to be curtailed.
Gramm is not wrong. The economy is not as good as it was, but financial experts will tell you it is not in recession. The MSM will tell you it is. People hear that and throw up their hands.....the exact opposite of what they should do. They should stop whining and continue to do what they have been doing previously. If they panic and stop spending money, they create a recession and the MSM will pat themselves on the back and say 'gotcha' to President Bush.
All this is the truth, but who dares to tell the truth in America in 2008? Telling the truth is a hate crime.
I encourage all to defeat this PC crap by being blunt, saying what you think, meaning what you say, and telling the truth. You may even shock yourself with the words that you hear coming out of your own mouth. This is a sign that you're on the right track.
Feed political correctness to the goat!

Classic
I think the best question and response McCain has fielded in the last day or two was the question about insurance companies covering Viagra and not birth control. The pause before his response was classic.

McCain fed Gramm to the Goat
Hey, you gotta do what you gotta do. If Gramm is a true friend, then he should accept the fact that he said something politically stupid, and get "under the bus" without being thrown.

Then maybe, just MAYBE...we can start talking about how Obama will destroy the economy with crippling tax policies?

Maybe we can stop Obama from moving to the center, instead of just letting it happen like we are now?

Maybe we might want to prevent a complete takeover of Washington by left-wing Democrats?

In keeping with my mood today: The Republican Party SUCKS!

How about "Threw him into the wood chipper"? McCain does have that "Fargo" aura of creepiness about him.
Hemrick writes: Thursday, July, 10, 2008 3:22 PM
Yep Paddy,
McCain's strategy is working just great. He's doing a bang-up job on all fronts, and is going to blow Obama out of the water.

"My Friend"
If you hear that, RUN!!!
Pasadena Phil writes: Thursday, July, 10, 2008 3:04 PM
Let's start questioning his other pals
Surely, his best buds Lindsey "we'll fix those bigots" Grahammnesty and "Smilin' Juan" Hernandez can be depended on for big stupendous gaffes. The worse thing to be in this world is a friend of McCain.
Pasadena Phil writes: Thursday, July, 10, 2008 3:00 PM
This isn't easing my bitterness either
I guess I'll just spend the next five months praying and clinging to my guns.

If this doesn't end the argument about McCain being a liberal what will? He needs to make friends with us "leave us alone, get the government off of our backs" conservatives. Whiners? Jeez! You don't like conservatives and now you don't like your whiny liberal friends either! Is that any way to run for president? Dumbest campaign EVUH!

The Opposite of Bush
I'm starting to notice that McCain seems to be throwing his pals overboard at the drop of a hat.

The opposite of the loyalty shown by Bush who stood by his friends...to a fault. (See: Scott McClellan)

I'm not sure which one is better, just pointing out the distinction.

Gettin' crowded under there
It's getting about as crowded under McCain's bus as Obama's
Joe writes: Thursday, July, 10, 2008 2:19 PM
It was almost certainly a joke
Gramm is right that there is way too much crying and moaning and we need to be objective when dealing the economy, but politically it was a stupid comment on Gramm's part.
paddy o'furniture writes: Thursday, July, 10, 2008 2:14 PM
My guess is....
...this was a joke.
McCain knows Gramm is right, but he also knows if you say things like that, the press will harp on it until the next OJ trial.
McCain's rope-a-dope strategy of avoiding controversy and letting Obama hang himself with his mouth are working just fine. He just needs to avoid the big "gotcha," and turn on the jets after the convention.
