Obama Advisor Takes Reid-Pelosi Line on Detroit

Barack Obama's soon-to-be White House senior adviser is saying the same thing Democratic leadership is saying about the fate of the Big Three: until you show us a plan, we can't show you the money.
"If they don’t do that then there is very little the tax payers can do," David Axelrod told George Stephanopoulos on "This Week."
So basically we have the situation where all of Washington's Big Three players (Obama, Reid, Pelosi) are telling Detroit's Big Three (GM, Ford, Chrylser) to come up with their own bailout package. This has the convenient effect of letting the Democrats escaping any responsibility for it.
But why does anybody, including those Democrats in Washington, think the auto companies would be good stewards of tax dollars? What reasonable person thinks they should be able to dictate their own terms of agreement after we've watched them squander millions upon billions of dollars? (After all, these are the people who think cutting back from five corporate jets to two shows signficant financial hardship!!)
Sadly, I think we all know the answer to these questions. It's spelled U-A-W.

Their plan is to spend the money and ask for more. |

I am as much against the UAW as anybody but during the last round of negotiations they finally got it. They made major concessions. IF you were to get a UAW job now at the Big 3 you'd start at $14 an hour and not get benefits after you retire or are let go. As the existing workers retire or leave they're not being replaced at the same rate. The companies are doing the right thing now. The arguments against them are being made as if it's the 1990s, especially in regards to Ford Motor Company. The key leaders, including the CEO, were not the ones behing the mess they are currently in. Check their resumes and background before just assuming.
The stance the lawmakers are taking is being done not out of principle but to help the manufuacturers in their state or region. |

"But why does anybody, including those Democrats in Washington, think the auto companies would be good stewards of tax dollars?"
I reckon the same logic is in play that had so many "conservative" columnists and talking heads arguing on for the Wall Street bailout.

Just like the Wall Street bailout.

That's what I asked about the Wall Street bailout.

today said that Wall Street, in addition to the first 700 billion infusion, would now need another 700-800 billion........ he seems to be a big advocate of the Wall Street bailout boondoggle...... could it be because WALL STREET IS IN NEW YORK????? Schumer, Paulson (former Wall Street insider), and others seem willing to give Wall Street everything w/o much, if any, accountability...... Could be a total of 1.5 TRILLION given to the financial sector.........
Contrast this to giving a comparatively paltry 25 billion being requested by the Big 3 automakers.........with exact details of how it would be spent being demanded by Congress before even considering the request....... Is our government willing to let the Big 3 go under and let the Japanese , Korean, and German companies take over our automotive industry???? Don't kid yourself if you don't believe all 3 of those foreign governments don't and won't subsidize and "prop up" their companies if they were/are struggling???? They live off exporting their autos to the US.... If the Big 3 go under, there is yet another LARGE MANUFACTURING INDUSTRY gone forever.... I guess we can all work AND shop at Walmart.... be nothing more than a consumer economy, MAKING NOTHING....... The USA will be relagated to at least 2nd world status and maybe 3rd world..... |

I wish Congress would show us a plan when they want to spend our take our money.
All of this tough talk would make at least a little bit of sense if they didn't get through just handing out billions and billions for other regions and industries. |

We should be thankful we finally have something we can half-way agree about with Ms. Pelosi. This at least sounds like some accountability. Where were the accountability advocates when all the other bailout recipients got their hands on our money? |
|
gonna be tough for Big-3 to come up with a plan. How will they explain the 3 sets of books they keep, one for the UAW telling them how broke they are every year, one for the Banks telling them how secretly profitable they are and one for the government telling them how much money they didn't make? This is the rumor any way.
Alas despite the desire to put them under beware that each UAW job lost is equal the 3 other jobs plus trickle down. Would be far worse than everyone thinks not to mention the pension losses. |
|
Romney already said what they have to do, sit down and renegotiate the contracts, they cant go down the same road, or its over for the big three. |
|
Whos to say that he wouldnt of said, sit down and Renegotiate the contracts or its over for the American Auto Industry. |

When you don't know what to do the easiest and safe thing TO DO is copy the previous administration. Appoint all Clinton's minions and if you can't come up with an answer to the economic problems follow the leaders. It's amazing the American people didn't see this coming. If you look in the Oxford dictionary for Obama's Senate record it reads "See Hillary's" and he voted present a gazillion times. |

...when spelling out difficulty. The UAW did not ever dictate terms; management and the UAW had to agree. It is easy to say now, but management should have put up with a long strike in order to fight the unions. The Big Three thought, at one time, that they had control over the auto market. Competition works. (Aside ... now how do we establish vouchers and bring competition to the teacher's unions?) |
|
Talk about audacity- demanding that U.S. taxpayer dollars be used to subsidize stupid workers (who made phenominally stupid requests) and even more stupid mgt (who agreed to the stupid requests). It ought to be illegal to continuously demand more pay, more time off, more pensions, for the same work. If you expect mgt to guarantee to you that in 25 years it will still be the biggest baddest auto manufacturer in the world- you are crazy. You are in effect demanding that a company guarantee to you they will always be smarter, more efficient, better designers, better marketers so that you can make illogical demands forever. Unions want what everyone wants- guarantees. Socialists & Unions don't understand that when govt guaranteees all this to people, then no one bothers to strive. Then we all live like russian peasants- of course everyone IS equally miserable. Everything (nothing) is equally divided. I guess that's what they want. Always demanding, never producing. |

i bet the big three big dogs spent the uaw pension funds money on more casinos in vegas!the big dogs want the money put back before the uaw workers find out! |

"25 Billion Lets see there are 300 million U S Citizens in America. So divide that 25 billion by 300 million and it comes out to 83,333,333 per person in America."
Sorry ( $25-B / 300-M people ) is $83.33 each.
We see here that No Child Left Behind failed.
