Looking Beyond 2/5
Posted by: Patrick Ruffini at 11:16 AM

It’s quite likely that the Democratic race will drag out beyond Tuesday. The key reason is delegates. The Dems allocate them on a strict proportional basis, so there is no bonus for winning a state by a little. Clinton won Nevada but lost the delegate race 12-13 because of caucus allocations. She won New Hampshire but was tied in delegates 9-9.

Even if Clinton wins most states, and wins California by 6-8 points, she could only up with a delegate lead in the range of 100-200 in a field of 4,049. And though she has a superdelegate advantage, only a small number have so far endorsed. Expect that many of the rest to hold out until the end and bandwagon towards the strongest candidate at the last minute. The march to Denver could be a long one a la Ford-Reagan.

Next week are the Beltway Tuesday primaries with DC, MD, and VA. With strong African American electorates, these should tilt to Obama. In fact, I’ve already seen Obama ads up in the DC market. Expect him to clear 70% of the vote in the District, and carry Baltimore City and Prince George’s counties by similar margins. Virginia is a bit more of a swing state, but it’s an open primary and Republicans can vote. If the Republican race were settled next Tuesday, there would be nothing stopping Republicans and independents from flooding the Democratic primary to mess with the Clintons. Savvy Republicans in the DC suburbs would probably have no compunction about doing this.

Beyond then, I could easily see Obama making up for a small deficit with newly liberated independents and Republicans. The calendar is extended enough that he could probably make an effort to re-register people to vote in closed Democratic primaries in March/April/May states.

Note that even if the Democratic race remains unsettled, I don’t expect it to provide much of an advantage to the Republican nominee. Clinton/Obama would suck all the media oxygen (while the Republican nominee would be ignored), and the winner would get a huge boost at the end. But there is also the chance that one could go negative hard on the other, so it is worth letting their race drag out.

Should the Republican race go on, I’d expect McCain to have an advantage in the next wave of 2/12 primaries because of his moderate/Washington credentials. The next big stops would be delegate-rich Texas and Ohio on March 4th. By this point, Huckabee will probably have thrown in with McCain, testing what a one-on-one conservative vs. moderate race looks like in the most Republican large state of all, Texas. Here, Romney is not hobbled as he is in other Southern states, because his base, metro conservatives, is huge in Texas. Suburban Houston and Dallas is probably relatively hospitable territory for him. In Ohio, Romney would have a chance to reprise his economic success from Michigan.

One way or another, it’s going to be a wild ride.

McCain has McMentum
McCain builds momentum as we head into the weekend. He gains former Rudy backer and ex-Massachusetts Governor Paul Cellucci (and decides to make Romney sweat in his home state) and also nabs former Rudy advisor Steve Forbes. (Fiscal conservatives can argue whether Forbes or McCain advisor Phil Gramm would make a better Treasury Secretary.) Finally, the McCain team advises the media that in the excruciatingly complicated Louisiana caucuses (in which an uncommitted pro-life slate initially won), the delegates have now selected McCain. He nabs 41 of 47 of the state’s delegates.

Little by little the pieces fall into place. Looking at the latest polling I see Mitt Romney leading only in Massachusetts, Colorado and Utah. In many Red states he runs third to MIke Huckabee. It is quite possible Huckabee will gain more delegates than Romney on Tuesday.

McCain in California: Mac surging
http://www.field.com/fieldpollonline/subscribers/Rls2264.pd f

This poll came out today and confirmed McCain up by 8 in California.

"On the Republican side, John McCain has opened up an eight-point lead over Mitt Romney. McCain is now supported by 32% of likely voters in the GOP primary, compared to 24% for Romney. Another 13% are supporting Mike Huckabee, 10% are backing Ron Paul, 6% are for other candidates, and 15% are undecided. Two weeks ago The Field Poll found McCain holding a four-point lead over Romney in California."

Rubish.
Huckabee is not going to toss it in, particularly since he'll have near or more delegates than Romney. Mitt is going to have the same issues on 2/12 as he does on 2/5 with Huck in the race.

There will be no wild ride after 2/5, just speculation when Mitt will bow out.

Post Super T
McCain will only have about a 200 delegate advantage after Super T (same as Hillary). Further, there is a Romney surge and that will intensify.

John McCain is the candidate of "more wars" and "more of the same". He will destroy the Republican Party in Nov and the down line candidates. What the Surge gives it takes.

Romney on the other hand can say with credibility that he will not give Iraq to the terrorists but that he will draw down troops as fast as he can. Further, he can and has said that we do not want permanent bases or troops in Iraq.

In the general election he can defeat the Dems by saying that if we lose Iraq we will also lose Afghanistan and Pakistan. We can not cut and run. However, we will withdraw troops as fast as we can stabilize Iraq and we will not have a permanent presence in Iraq.

Romney can defuse the Iraq issue in the general election. McCain forces the GOP to support "more wars" and "more of the same". Iraq is now McCain's WAR.

McCain is a disaster. Romney will win.

McCain and Romney?

Two peas in a pod, both socialist fascists. Both unconstitutional warmongers. Both about as republican as Hillary.

McCain is a traitor, he made over 30 videos for the viet cong, denouncing America. Gave all our flight patterns and targets of interest in north vietnam to the viet cong. After which our planes were shot down at 60 percent and we had to stop bombing runs. Hmmmm, you didn't know that did you folks? Here is a great question to ask McTraitor, why wasn't he promoted along with all the other POW's, while in captivity? Answer, cause the Navy knew what he did and that he was a friggin traitor and refused to promote him. If his father wasn't an admiral, he'd be in the brig.

Nice being the son of an admiral and now a US Senator, that had his records sealed. And there so much more. Just wait if Hillary gets a hold of him. Don't believe me, go ask the people of POW MIA.

Romney is just a puke, flip flopper double talker. All his sons and not one in the military? Put up or shut up. 35 million of his own money? What a scum bag trying to buy the election, cant even get donations. Thats pretty poor.

Illegal aliens murder
12 Americans daily
By Joseph Farah

WASHINGTON – While the military "quagmire" in Iraq was said to tip the scales of power in the U.S. midterm elections, most Americans have no idea more of their fellow citizens – men, women and children – were murdered this year by illegal aliens than the combined death toll of U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan since those military campaigns began.
Though no federal statistics are kept on murders or any other crimes committed by illegal aliens, a number of groups have produced estimates based on data collected from prisons, news reports and independent research.

Romney cannot be trusted
He used to be pro-gun control and wanted nothing to do with the NRA, but now he's against gun grabbers and thinks the NRA is peachy. He came across as a member of the open borders and amnesty crowd whose position wasn't much different than that of John McCain on illegal immigration -- until it became a hot political issue -- and now he's running ads that make him sound like Tom Tancredo on the subject. Then there are the Bush tax cuts, embryonic stem cell research, and the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy. There have been so many flips that the flops are still running about two blocks behind, trying to catch up.

Are these shifts genuine? Are they purely for politics' sake? Is Mitt Romney a conservative or is he a squish telling us what we want to hear while planning to take 3 or 4 steps back towards the middle once he feels less pressure to pander to the base? Probably the former, but there's no way to really know the truth. Do we really want a nominee in 2008 that we have this sort of questions about?

McCain is the real Reagan heir
As a lifelong conservative, I wish McCain evinced a greater understanding that limited government is indispensable to individual liberty. Yet there is no candidate in either party who so thoroughly embodies the conservatism of American honor and tradition as McCain, nor any with greater moral authority to invoke it. For all his transgressions and backsliding, McCain radiates integrity and steadfastness, and if his heterodox stands have at times been infuriating, they also attest to his resolve. Time and again he has taken an unpopular stand and stuck with it, putting his career on the line when it would have been easier to go along with the crowd.

A perfect conservative he isn't. But he is courageous and steady, a man of character and high standards, a genuine hero. If "the House that Reagan Built" is to be true to its best and highest ideals, it will unite behind John McCain.

I believe Romeny will do well in Texas. Detestable RINO Rick just jumped on the Mac wagon. That has to help Mitt with the nominating base.

We've raised a lot of money for Mitt here in Texas. He has the support of Perot and his organization. At the Texas Straw Poll, won by Duncan Hunter, 3 independent grass roots pro-Romney groups showed up.

Ron Paul will also run well here. Despite is whacko present day image, he is an icon of Texas Politics - and other than his Iraq position; his positions are consistent with most conservatives. McCain will do well in traditional Dem strongholds along the border, but the other traditional Dem strongholds - Austin, Urban Dallas, will go for Ron Paul thus diluting Mac votes.

Michael Barone: McCain favorite to win
None of which would have been possible without a collapse in Rudy Giuliani’s support, which was as widely unpredicted as his earlier rise to the top of the polls. Or without the collapse of the candidacy of 2000 McCain supporter Fred Thompson, who led in polls as a noncandidate but lost the lead before he officially declared.

Even so, McCain now seems a prohibitive favorite for the Republican nomination. He leads in just about all the polls in the big states that vote on Super Tuesday, Feb. 5. Giuliani has bowed out, and Huckabee’s election night speech reiterated his respect for McCain. Romney alone has the potential to buy enough ads and possibly derail McCain this week. But big-time buys did not win for him in Iowa, New Hampshire or Florida.

Maine results so far.
Unofficial state delegate count in Maine so far.

Paul Romney McCain Huck
Totals: 638 1454 589 166

The people on the RP forums are keeping track on a country by county basis.

However, at the state convention delegates tend to vote for all there people and since Romney has such a majority, he will probably get winner take all. However, if the other break a combined 50%, they make strike a deal for proportional representation. ..but at this time Romney has greater than 50% so he'll probably take all 21 delegates...assuming the super delegates go along with the 18 chosen by the caucus.

Huck+Paul+McCain= 1393
Romney= 1454

So as long as Romney holds his lead...which is a big maybe he can do a winner take all in Maine. This is a three day Caucus and 68% are done (aka 32% still need to caucus) so things could yet change.

McCain is Wrong About the Middle East
I keep hearing McCain say one thing over and over that is patently untrue and underscores how he is so wrong about the Middle East. Here's the problem. McCain fundamentally does not understand the type of war that is going on in the Middle East, nor does he understand how America's presence there is perceived.

In his own words: "...It's not American presence, it's American casualties. We have American troops all over the world today and nobody complains about it because we're defending freedom." (NYT January 24, 2008 Republican Debate)

McCain, you are wrong - it IS about our presence there! It has always been about our presence there!!! This isn't Japan or Germany who welcomed us there as liberators. What McCain fails to understand is this: we're not dealing with people who think like us. We're not dealing with people who can be appeased with money or concessions. The minute we step foot in the Middle East, we're on their turf. And to them, it's not only personal, it's religious! The sooner we can bring about stability in Iraq the better, because we need to be out of there the very next day, NOT IN 100 YEARS!!! Anyone else that thinks otherwise does not understand the region at all! The only thing McCain understands is that we need to win at all cost there. Well, it's the "at all cost" that is going to be his undoing, and ours if we let him.

How did Sanctuary Mansion Mitt gain cred
Seriously, what has he done to make anyone think he wouldn't be far softer regarding illegals than McCain proposed to be last year, before he saw the light?

We have only Mitt's experience to go on, and his experience consists of paying illegals to mow his lawn, not to mention doing and expressing nothing about at least three official sanctuary cities that operated in his state.

Now some choose to believe his usual claim of a complete change of heart on the issue. It's an entirely theoretical change so far, of course. When he was actually in power he did nothing except make things easier for illegals. It's only as an ex-gov that he has toughened up, and ex-govs don't actually have any power. So it's been an entirely cost-free change for Romney.

But let's say we believe him instead of our lying eyes & ears. Okay, fine. But then why shouldn't we believe McCain as well? After all, he too claims to have seen the light, to have realized that blanket amnesty was a bad idea, that we need enforcement.

Now naturally a lot of us are pretty skeptical. There's a well-grounded suspicion that people don't change that easily, that McCain may just be saying what we want to hear, and that if he gets in he'll be right back to his old tricks again. So I'm certainly not willing to place 100% faith in his mere assertion that he is now suddenly on the side of enforcement.

But my skepticism is not selective. It doesn't apply only to John McCain. All of the above pertains as much to Romney as it does to McCain. I can believe that both of them are sincere, or neither.

Patrick is right
This is likely to go past Super Tuesday. I like Mitt in Texas and Ohio. But Here's the REAL DEAL:

With Huck (and Paul to a lesser extent) in the race, it's quite possible that nobody will get to 1191 delegates by the time primaries are over. Right now, counting super delegates and giving Romney 7 for Maine (3 for Mac) the current delegate count stands at:

McCain ......100
Romeny ......81
Huckabee ...29
Paul .................6

On Super Tuesday, there are over 300 delegates to be awarded by "caucus" rather than primary. So far McCain has been extrordinarily weak in caucus states. McCain will do well on Tuesday - but I don't think he can land a knockout.

Pure speculation but: If Romney continues to gain in national polling and recognition, and he "runs out the clock" with the Primary season ending without anyone reaching 1191. The nomination will become a battle for public opinion. There's a long time between primary season and the convention. With Hannity, Ingraham, Levine, even Savage, blasting McCain every day - Romney will likely have gained a "consensus status" befor September.

Of course, Huck might recognize that staying in is hurting Mac, then he may get out and screw up my whole damn analysis. Go figure....

Allan Wall on Hernandez/McCain
Just one of many reasons McCain must never be allowed to hold the Oval office. Hernandez should be stripped of his citizenship and deported to Mexico.

A great photo of Bush, Fox and Hernandez together at the link.

Memo From Mexico,
By Allan Wall

Why Is John McCain’s "Hispanic Outreach Director" Still Involved in Mexican Politics? Because That’s How McCain Likes It.
John McCain is now the front-runner for the Republican nomination. He has the momentum, the media like him, and he’s got some big name endorsements (from Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Nancy Reagan, and drop-out candidate Giuliani, among others). Will McCain and his so-called "Straight Talk Express" take the nomination?

Here in Mexico, I haven’t thus far seen much interest in the McCain candidacy. The media has been reporting his success in the Republican primary, though he’s not yet well-known among the populace. As a rule, the Democratic candidates Hillary and Obama are better known than the Republican candidates.

And I predict that when general election time rolls around, the Democratic candidate will be the favorite here as usual, and not the GOP standard bearer, whoever he may be. McCain will turn out like President Bush, who despite his pandering to Mexico, is not well-liked here. For that matter, McCain won’t achieve a breakthrough with U.S. Hispanics either, any more than Bush did.

At VDARE.COM, we cannot endorse candidates. But we can and do evaluate them and their platforms, to see how they measure up on the National Question. Then you can vote for whom you like.

In other words, "We Report, You Decide".

The consensus here at VDARE.COM is, and has been for years, that John McCain, when it comes to the National Question, is not on our side.

Please no Not Modell
Please say the Modell endorsemnet for Romney is a joke !

Please say he didn't compare Mitt to Elway and the drive, not on Super Bowl Sunday, oh the agony. I was at that game, I still have nightmares about it.

Art Modell has to be the most hated man in North East Ohio.

He stole the Cleveland Browns !!!!!

He's worse than John McCain!!!!

It can't be true - that could sink Mitt in Ohio

Are you serious? Nothing is over. Tuesday can go either way.. By the Way, why can't McCain even get 50% of the vote in his own state?

Can you really watch McCain and feel proud??

Wow......aren't you an angry leftist today. No doubt you like McStain because of his pro-amnesty and anti-judge Alito stances.

Go Mitt!!
McCain was a great hero. His subsequent activities in Congress however have greatly diminished his appropriateness for as a Republican nominee for president. If anything he is better suited as an Independent candidate. He'd make a great Secretary of Defense. Definitely not what we want as president though. Go Mitt!!!!!

BREAKING STORY on McCain + Clinton Ties?

Just saw this .... via Jack Wheeler and RadioPatriot:

"According to T, they reveal that McCain had made an "accommodation" with his captors, and in exchange, T's father saw that he was provided with an apartment in Hanoi and the services of two prostitutes. Upon returning to his prison cell, he would say he had been held in solitary confinement. That may be why so many of his fellow prisoners said later they saw so little of him at Hoa Loa."

This is not good for McCain.

McAmnesty??????

Securing the border and enforcing the law is the only way we get to keep our rule of law, our representative Republic, and our Constitution. We must elect a President who WILL secure the border and enforce the law. If citizenship becomes meaningless, this will no longer be the United States of America.

McAmnesty will not get out the voters necessary for a GOP win. Increasing turnout is the key. Give people something to vote for. Not just the lesser of two evils. Won't work this time. People are fed up with the inundation of illegal aliens. They would come out in droves for the clear choice of D=amnesty or R=enforcement. They will stay home if they both equal amnesty.

There is a huge majority of American citizens waiting for someone to pledge to uphold the laws and secure the borders, let's not ignore them any more.

lowandslow -- 12:39 post:

"You guys remember 2006 here on Townhall? Days before the election all it was was one marginally positive poll after another giving everyone false hope. Those that paid attention to Rasmussen knew what was going to happen, we were going to lose and lose big. Same thing now. Christ their going to have to put most of you on suicide watch Tuesday night when Romney loses this thing."

You've got it exactly right, and that's why this Virginia voter is crossing over on 2/12 to vote for Obama.

Doesn't matter if its McCain or Romney (or Huckabee or Paul). A Democrat is going to be elected president in 2008. "President Obama" is a scary prospect, but at least there's a hope that our nation will survive four years of wishful leadership. No way we as a nation can survive 4 years of the she-devil and her slick consort.

Go Obama! If you can be the one to disable once and for all the Clinton machine, I will nominate you for a Medal of Freedom -- hopefully to be hung around your handsome visage by President Romney.

Wrong again JOE
McCain is deflating and the Conservatives are finally coming together in the 11th hour.

Romney was down double digits in CA, and despite Arnold's endorsement at a solar panel factory Romney has actually come back to take the lead in recent polls;

In Georgia and MO Romney was again down double digits and now he is back within 3 to 5% in recent polls....

Romney won Maine by 31% even though both Senators had endorsed McCain.

They are having a tough time finding facilities large enough to hold Romney rallies in Illinois and Colorado...

Romney is only down single digits in McCain's home state of AZ and rising while McCain is over campaigning is MA in an attempt to try and embarass Romney.... it's beginning to look like McCain will be the one getting embarrassed.

The Conservatives are finally uniting and some of us who were previously Huck supporters are seeing that we need to support Romney in order to ensure that we have a Conservative Nominee in November...

cincy kid
Well cincy.... think that you are going to be disappointed with the Romney Surge..... Hang around though cuz I'm thinking that you will be able to see him up close and personal in a few weeks when the "Change Washington Express" hits your town in Ohio....

Conservatives are finally starting to form the majority for which Republicans have been famous....For some of us, it took awhile.... I was a Thompson supporter before I was a Huck supporter and I always liked Rudy.... but now I am a fill fledged Romney guy because we cannot afford to put McCain and his liberal positions up against the Demos.... and I am thinking that there will be more like me.

Online RCP betting
Here are the current numbers from RCP online betting:

GOP Nomination
Romney: 9% (11-to-1 odds)
McCain: 89% (nearly even money)

To Drop Out by March 1
Romney: 81%
Huckabee: 82%

To summarize the bets on the state primaries: McCain runs the table except for maybe a few hundred delegates here and there.

The party's over, RomneyBots.

It's time to get on with the job of healing the GOP and preparing to take on the Democrats.
poyman writes: Sunday, February, 03, 2008 6:55 PM
It's impossible
for some of us to support McCain.... You see some Conservatives (like myself, or Dr. Dobson and others) can't do that and look themselves in the mirror and feel like they are being true to themselves and the conservative values that they beieve in..... To vote for McCain would be like whoring yourself out in order to avoid another Presidency that you also cannot support....

Our only hope is for Romney now (as the others that would merrit consideration and support have dropped out).

Republicans for Obama / Clinton
I used to just laugh at the thought. It's not funny anymore. It will be painful, it will hurt, I may regret it later, but I will be one of those if McCain is the Republican Candidate. There are lots of us out here. We will not vote for McCain. As I have said here many times, and have heard here many times, McCain will not unite the Republican base. We conservatives will not allow it. McCain is not electable and will not win, no matter how many of the Party Loyalists join his little trip of Washington insiders for McCain. Senators are not made to be President.

Mitt lied about Vietnam
During CNN’s January 30 debate from the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, Romney said, “one of the two great regrets I have in life is I didn’t serve in the military. I’d love to have.” This echoes what he told the Boston Globe last June 24. “I longed in many respects to actually be in Vietnam and be representing our country there and in some ways it was frustrating not to feel like I was there as part of the troops that were fighting in Vietnam.”

Now, as works with almost any subject, search Google or Nexis for “Romney” and “Vietnam” and any date before 2004, when he got serious about pursuing the 2008 GOP nomination.

Voila! There it is, from May 2, 1994. “I was not planning on signing up for the military. It was not my desire to go off and serve in Vietnam,” Romney told the Boston Herald.

This flip flop is much more revealing and far more disturbing than the rest...
