These arent really THAT kind of pirates. Nothing is more offensive than sucking up to the wrong ethnic group. We should be a bit more fulsome in our apologies to the Somalis. After all, the ship involved was carrying imperialistic food aid for Somalia, a real insult to their national pride. We should just include Somalia in the New And Improved Immigration Bill. Then, as US citizens and registered voters, we can sign them up for some conflict resolution counseling and job training under the Stimulus Bill. Famines dont last long when there's Food Stamps in the house! If they've received ransoms over $250k the IRS will have to be sent in to make those pesky marauders pay their fair share and of course the Carbon Tax will have to be applied to their boats. These boats will also have to comply with safety regulations, the crews unionized and a group health-care and workman's comp insurance policy purchased. With the US Government involved we will soon remove any scrap of enterprise or initiative from Somalia and destroy the so-called 'free' economy that encourages piracy (aka capitalism). |

Maersk formed an American company -- Maersk America -- which merged (bought out, actually) SEALAND, which was once the largest US maritime company. Notice the "SEALAND' in high letters on the side of the MAERSK ALABAMA. (I believe, not certain, that the ship used to be SEALAND ALABAMA.)
There are over a dozen Maersk vessels under long-time charter to the US government as pre-positioned ships that carry military equipment. Several are in Diego Garcia -- just waiting for a call.
All Maersk America vessels fly the American flag and are manned with US Merchant Seamen.
All US associated ships owned/controled by Maersk America do not carry the name "Maersk XXXXXX." No idea how many they have total, but it is a grunch -- all manned by US seaman. Their ships not associated with the US fly flags of various countries and are manned with seamen from all over the world.

OK, what do you suggest they do? I think they're doing exactly the right thing. It's blindingly obvious to the pirates that if they kill the hostage captain, nothing is going to save their own lives. If they kill the hostage, no sane person or government in the world will protest if the U.S. goes in with guns blazing and blows every last one of the pirates away.
By waiting them out, we get the ship back, and the American captain goes home alive. Moreover, despite all the chest-beating in this thread, no other pirate group is going to take this to mean that they can seize ships with impunity. In the real world, there's a whole lot of space between blowing everybody away and meekly surrendering. |

(The Spanish ain't so hot on him either, but I can't say about the French as I can't read much French. Don't know about the Germans as I don't even try to read any of that language.)
This article is titled: "Barack Obama: President Pantywaist - new surrender monkey on the block."
The article begins with a sentence to the effect that Obama's just completed the most successful foreign policy since Napoleon retreated from Moscow -- and it gets worse.
The majority of the reader's comments are anti-Obama too. And, yes, a few appear to have been written by Americans.
Even the Guardian -- a very left newspaper, had a rather nasty article concerning Obama last week or the week before. |

The article mentioned is pretty clear that the "Continentals" (countries of Europe) are going to do absolutely nothing that they don't have to do, regardless of how much Obama kisses up to 'em. This is not the only article that carried the same theme.
It is quite possible that Obama will get less from Europe than did Bush. Why? Well, an earlier article (In the Daily Mail?) said that the Europeans had a fear that Bush would "go it alone" if necessary, regardless of what Europe wanted. They do not seem to have this fear with Obama.

i agree with you. i have no problem with snipers shooting in unison at the pirates. or seals creeping into the boat and executing. that is legit force in a crime/war/terror situation. wonder why that didn't happen. was the captain out of sight, so they were concerned that shooting the visible pirates would only get him killed? were there other dynamics involved? we know the captain jumped and tried to swim towards the ship. were they shooting at him?
there is a lot we don't know. i know you watch a lot of teevee and read those espionage thrillers, so you have a skewed view of reality--but i am interested in hearing the sequence of events so we know why Uncle Sam just didn't shoot the m-f-ers. |

There is more than one way to overpower the pirates, but the Navy would have to be first unleashed -- and that has to be done at the Seat of Government in today's world. The captain of Maersk Alabama is in danger, regardless of the method used. He, no doubt, knows that.

I didn't say the administration screwed up, not yet anyway. I pray we get Captain Phillips home safely. I'm not certain, but believe I sailed with him and Chief Mate Murphy aboard a Marine Transport Lines or a Waterman ship when they were either cadets or third mates -- both look familiar.
The French just freed the folks the pirates had captured on a French registered yacht, but they lost one of the hostages -- didn't say who killed him/her. They killed two pirates and captured four(?) others. The French Minister of Defense said: " It is the government's policy not to allow French citizens to be taken ashore as hostages."
A local radio station reporter just re-capped the situation. He said: "We are not looking too good." And this is a Navy town! |

I'm generally not in favor of the death penalty, but in the case of pirates I believe the Royal Navy and the US Navy in the 'Seventeen and early 'Eighteen Hundreds had the right idea. Hang 'em from the yardarm, cut off their heads and mount the heads on a pole as an example to others who might want to enter the profession.
The ship's officers used to stand watch in certain areas of the world, armed with 12 gage shotguns -- we stood the watches at night when in pirate invested waters. Never were boarded, but I listened to a German ship off Singapore screaming for help one night when they were boarded. There was nobody to help -- the local patrol crafts were out of range. The German ship was loaded with steel rebar -- nothing else. I read in the Strait's Times after we entered port that the ship was taken to an area claimed by several countries, but governed by none, off-loaded and the crew held for ransom. This happened around 1991.
The International Maritime Organization issues a weekly warning message that is at least THREE feet long. The message is unclassified. It contains paragraph after paragraph of pirate boardings, thefts, robbing of ships in port. It is amazing how many there are! I don't know how one would find this message on the internet, but I suspect it is there -- probably under IMO. |
