Time for a Deep Breath
Posted by: Carol Platt Liebau at 3:59 PM
The Hill has noted that police are preparing for riots in the aftermath of the presidential elections.

This kind of thing makes me wonder where the America I know has gone.  That's the one, of course, where we take pride in a peaceful transition of power in the wake of presidential elections.  Street violence on election night has hitherto been the stuff of banana republics, not The United States of America.

It strikes me that everyone of every political stripe -- from the National Reviews and Townhall to Daily Kos and TPM -- should be able to agree: Not only is violence in electoral politics evil and unacceptable -- but the whiff of intimidation that accompanies the threat of it is pernicious and intolerable.  And they should be saying so.  Loudly.  And frequently.  The long term health of our democratic republic depends on it.

Even as I write this, the Drudge Report notes (without link) that a 20 year old McCain volunteer has been attacked and mutilated -- a "B" carved into her face.  Of course, the vast majority of Obama supporters are decent people, who would never dream of doing such a thing (could we please ask Democrats to note the same when some crazy says something stupid at a McCain rally?).  And it's too bad that some criminals are tarnishing their ranks.

Do those who stoop to engaging in violence in service of Obama's cause really think they're helping their candidate?  Rather, they may be frightening normal voters, who won't be eager to bring to power someone who, even unintentionally,  inspires such ugly zealotry.  And, most important of all, what they're doing is despicable, destructive and wrong.  Just wrong.  It can't be said often enough.

Is this sort of behavior un-American?  As Sarah Palin might put it, You betcha.

AWFUL!
I hope this story gets a lot of press! If someone had done that to an Obama supporter it would be front page on every news paper and the lead story on the evening news!

The Kenyan leader that Obama

supported and campaigned with in Kenya, Odinka is his name I think, acquired his power after losing the election by burning Christian churches, killing 1500 supporters of his opponent and rendering 500,000 people homeless.

That is what one of Obama's peers did. Is it any wonder the police are worried?

If Obama should win (God forbid), there will be no violence. The preparation for violence is in the event Obama loses (God grant it).
Bryan  writes: Thursday, October, 23, 2008 4:21 PM
I certainly hope...

That if the story of the attack is true, that the campaign volunteer will recover psychologically and physically.

I don't think riots are on the horizon. I really don't. There's going to be epic disappointment on the losing side, and some anger, and more than enough blame to go around, but I don't think mass scale violence is in order.

I have heard about volunteers on both sides getting punched in the face. Verbally assaulted. That's scary.

Part of me wonders if the media wants us to kill each other, just to write the story. Sometimes I think they keep talking about Bradley and rioting to make it all happen so they have something to write about. That's scary too.

But first and foremost, thoughts should be with the volunteer that was assaulted and the authorities leading the investigation. Swift process here, I hope.

Next Thing
Soon we may be treated to people parading around with giant pictures of "The One" like they do in the third world countries that Obama wants us to emulate.
animalgirl writes: Thursday, October, 23, 2008 4:22 PM
hey
What about violence against Obama supporters?

Over the weekend, a man assaulted an Obama canvasser. People with Obama signs have gotten death threats. And then there's the weird kind of threats, like the black bear cub that was shot, hung with Obama signs and left on a college campus, or the effigy of Obama hung from a tree at George Fox University. And of course, there's the vandalism--today, Fayetteville, NC police arrested the McCain supporters who slashed 30 tires at an Obama rally.

And there are just the anti-government types--last night the homes of both Minnesota's senators and four of their representatives--both Democrat and Republican--were vandalized with the same spray-painted slogans.

So not all vandalism can necessarily be attributed to the supporter of the opponent.

It's becoming increasingly clear....
....that despite the rationalization from the left, these people are incapable of governing their own behavior. They are a lawless mob, intent on having their way. They are no better than the rampaging youth in France a few years ago, or any other counter-culture wackos who cotton to no boundaries set up by civilized societies.
Every day there is another story about the left damaging or vandalizing the property or person of another citizen who's views are in oppostion to their own.
The day is coming, I'm afraid, when we will be forced to take some of these people out....for our own protection. As frightening as that prospect is.....get ready.

Interesting to hear this "take"
Considering the recent spate of hateful mob mentality that has been spilling out of the McCain/Palin rallies. And consider the fact that lying about terrorist connections, the "black Jesus" nonsense from KMC and inciting panic over socialism has added to the dumbing down of the moronic base to levels that bring out the absolute WORST in fearful people, and you've got reason to worry, my friends.

Consider this as well: White supremacist groups and neo-Nazi groups are seeing a resurgence of their particular brand of hate. Wonder why? One has only to listen to Palin speak, watch FoxNews while Hannity rants about "hate" while secretly harboring friendship and alliance with a white supremacist and an anti-semite. Veiled, noxious bigotry is part of the RW/GOP/McCain campaign's daily grind. Ho hum and all that rot.

And here we have Carol, somehow projecting the resulting hate onto OBAMA, once again. The one guy in this campaign who HAS NOT made personal or racial attacks part of his schtick, and the polls indicate he is respected for that. Whatever happens, RW, just be assured that your side did NOTHING to keep it fair, dignified or honest.
Screwtape writes: Thursday, October, 23, 2008 4:38 PM
Nice show of sympathy, beastialitygirl
While there has always been some violence, and hooliganism during elections it has been very mild, particularly when you compare us with other countries. The simple fact that this type of attack has happened, regardless of who perpretrated it, shows just how low our culture has fallen. The civilized portions of both parties need to take a firm hand to their supporters and suppress this type of crime.

I pray that the young lady recover well. I also hope that her attackers are captured and thrown in a deep hole to die a slow death from starvation.

How well you fall into that "Projecting the Rot" on others crowd! DO YOU HEAR YOURSELF? This cannot be turned, at this juncture of the lowest common mob mentality denominator, into a Leftwing thing. Okay? Do you understand that for WEEKS there has been nothing but news story after news story of how debased the McCain crowd has become? Well, get used to it - whatever happens, whether McCain wins by cheating or Obama wins, the resulting "mob mentaility" will have the RW signature allllllllll over it.

Haha. Come ON. Get real.

For eight yrs, since the defeat of Gore
The Democratic Party has fostered a climate of rage hate against George W. Bush.

That rage hate has morphed into the caricature zealotry of MoveOn, Code this and that and the crazed agenda at HuffPo and Daily Kos.

It is no wonder that marginal individuals that previously never engaged in the voting process have gotten dervished-up to frenzy.

Some innocent and vulnerable people may get hurt by the felonious conduct of the immature Sen. Obama marginals that we hear and see around us.

The crazed are with us.

They might step back and wonder if society were to flame up and streets were to burn, where the strength of response to danger lies?

Conservatives are tougher, better trained, better armed and prepared and represent the bulk within the security apparatus within the States and local communities as well as the Fed.

If crazed individuals attacked a female McCain worker in the presence of one configured such as me, the outcome would be an immediate sanction.

As Ms. Liebau states, the peaceful transition of power is our American legacy to each other and the future. When Richard Nixon was forced to leave his office in the greatest constitutional crisis since Lincoln and the succession, the world looked on at us in awe at how we handled the baton pass in our glorious Republic.

Don't be a little thug. The consequences for your own present and future will be severe and unflinching.

You never did tell my how that Black Liberation Theology was going for you. Have there been news stories of young Obama supporters being beaten and an 'M' carved into their faces? You are too pitiful and small for words. The simple fact of the matter is is that the right will not riot if Obama wins. The far left nut jobs (a small portion of the entire left) will riot whether he wins or loses.
Reason writes: Thursday, October, 23, 2008 4:43 PM
Carol:
You need to seriously take a breath with your blogs. You jumped on the false story about the lobster and now you include this mugging story at an ATM machine as possible evidence of nasty Obama supporters. Everything points to an out of town staffer being mugged at an ATM and then getting a gang calling card on her face. Truly awful, to be sure, but there is NOTHING to indicate that this has anything to do with politics.

Not only is there no support for the allegation that it had ANYTHING to do with her political support, I couldn't help but notice that the woman didn't seek medical attention. She filed a report the next day.

Sorry, but I wonder if this even happened at all. I have had too much experience with fake crimes in the past...

I think you make a good point about the media wanting the two camps to attack one another so they can cover the story. It wouldn't be the first time the media ginned up violence. Remember the Spanish-American War and 'Yellow Journalism'? Also, I think if Obama loses, even if it's by a wopping margin, there could be riots. The MSM and Dems have sold the idea of past elections being stolen so well and that anyone who doesn't vote for Obama is a racist that it dramatically increases the possiblity.
Screwtape writes: Thursday, October, 23, 2008 4:53 PM
Thankfully, it is not true...
Apparently just hysteria. It's unfortunate that this type of story got out there because if something bad really does happen the reporting will be brushed off as more hysteria.
Reason writes: Thursday, October, 23, 2008 4:56 PM
No riots
Luckily there won't be any riots. Even the robo-polling in North Carolina has Obama up. Do those who hope for the mythical "Bradley Effect" think that North Carolinians are so ashamed at their support for McCain that they would be reduced to pressing the button for Obama when they really support McCain?
Bryan  writes: Thursday, October, 23, 2008 5:02 PM
JIM...

As a Black American I really don't like how the media is DESPERATELY trying to start racial conflict. They really want this story, don't they? People attacking supporters, shooting bear cubs, lynch epithets of Obama etc.

Racism is real and dangerous but so is defining America by it's lowest common denominator of hatred.

I wish Obama and McCain could make a joint appearance. Squash this nonsense and then continue campaigning -- just to counterbalance a media that more and more seems obsessed with inciting violence based on racial and cultural division.

Rioting? Certainly a possibility.....
If Obama loses, the MSM will convince his supporters that they were "jobbed" and then there we go.....
Remember the not-guilty verdict for the LAPD in the Rodney King case. Blacks rioted, burned and looted Los Angeles for days. Pulled innocent whites from their cars and beat the H*E*L*L out of them. And the looting I just don't get.....if you disagree with a jury's decision, I guess it gives you the right to steal what you want. Any excuse to get that free big screen.......
If Obama wins, think gloating as in the O J Simpson murder verdict. If you remember, whites did NOT riot, burn and loot just because the jury refused to find that bast*rd guilty.
No matter how the election turns out, try behaving yourselves.
I'm sure someone will "play the race card" on me, but these are/were facts.

Riots
There has been several "Gestapo" type tactics arise and probably many more are hidden or not reported. A young lady beaten and threatened because she had a McCain/Palin sticker on her car. A group threatening to publish names of those not voting for Obama. This is America not some dictatorship. Where are we headed?

Mottos of "Spread the Wealth" and many racial overtones being bandied about, it would seem Obamas people are attempting to intimidate anyone not voting for him.

This alone should raise red flags. Please think hard before you vote.
Bryan  writes: Thursday, October, 23, 2008 6:08 PM
Well Fox...

I's gonna do de very bess to beeshave myself, suh.

I'll just satiate my genetic need to commit crime with white women, a bucket of fried chicken and ice-cold watteymelon.

LA riots and O.J. Simpson. Wow. Been holding onto that anger a long time, huh?

LOL!

'Hey, where the white women at?'...Bart, Blazing Saddles

Unfortunately there is some truth there. Lots of anger out there on both sides.

I was out of line...

But that post got under my skin.

Yes, there is anger on both sides but I just believe in my heart that cooler heads will prevail no matter the outcome.
foxmustang writes: Thursday, October, 23, 2008 6:50 PM
sorry Bryan
that post got under your skin.......but those were/are the facts AND I predicted someone (you) would call me a racist.....simply because I told the truth.
Bryan  writes: Thursday, October, 23, 2008 7:41 PM
I don't think you're a racist, Fox.

I just think you're insensitive to what comments like that do to good people. I don't know you. You might a nice person, or you could be a jerk...but to characterize the black community as a hive mind...come on.

And this is America, so if you are a racist, you're allowed that right. As I am allowed the right to chase white women and eat fried chicken and ice cold watteymelon.

That was a joke. Lighten up.

Seriously, though. Black people do not operate like "The Borg" in Star Trek. Criminal actions in Los Angeles aren't a litmus test for how we will react to something. If it was, then there would have been riots everywhere, eh?

Continuing with the same Democrat Party?
What does he want to change?
Wants the Taxpayers to pay for Abortions?
Wants a Free Country to Spread the Wealth?
Does Obama forget that this Country was built on freedom From Socialism? Does he forget that Great Americans are always there for the poor and downtrodden? We help those who need it! We aren't a Welfare Check!
No, He means he wants all people to own a mercedes, be able to go to Nieman Marcus, To have a big screen Televison, To support outside of the United States to help who?
Take a hard working mans earnings to support the deadbeats, there isn't any other way you can put it!
Conservatives, Catholics, you have seen how our GOD has been trashed in this Country, by Liberals?

When you quote someone, use the ENTIRE quote. Editing quotes for political purposes is usually the turf of the MSM (main stream media to you).
The entire quote was "I have to admit I've taken an Obama sign or two......you see, I ran out of "wiping material" in the outhouse.
Are you SO DENSE that you don't recognize HUMOR when you see/hear it?
OR were you editing quotes because it will look good on your next job resume' at MSNBC?

Remember, should there be riots incited because Obama wins, it will be worse when he's in office. He is acutally a divider not a uniter and you can expect much more division. Mark my words.
