How The MSM Helps Us Read The Political Tea Leaves
Posted by: Hugh Hewitt at 10:30 AM

Part 218 of the Boston Globe's attempt to derail Mitt Romney's accelerating presidential campaign details the governor's travels and his PACs' spending this year.

(The Globe neglected to give us the citation to its parallel story on John Kerry's absences from DC or Massachusetts in 2002, or Mike Dukakis' journeys in 1986.  Perhaps they are in the same file as the Globe's stories on the citizenship/green card status of the crews working on Kerry's many homes?)

Rarely have we ever had such a clear demonstration of the hard-left nature of a modern MSM paper than in the side-by-side comparison of the Globe's Kerry/Romney coverage.

What the paper's staff doesn't seem to understand is the incredible lift they are giving the Romney campaign.  There is no surer signal to the GOP base of a candidate's conservative principles, competence and electability than an early and sustained attempt to damage him by the MSM.  One of the reasons that Senator McCain is viewed with such distrust by the Republican base is the fawning coverage he receives from the Beltway-Manahattan media elites.  One of the reasons Rudy Giuliani has credibility with base despite his views on abortions rights etc is that the MSM clearly fears him.  Negative MSM coverage of Republican candidates is like a divining stick pointing towards those Republicans the Democratic Party fears the most.

The Washington Post, btw, is busy with MSM's second major task of 2007: helping Hillary and Obama clear the primary field of opposition.  (Don't listen to them Slow Joe.  We in talk radio need you!)

Hey R-Bob:
Paranoia and fear are fundamental characteristics of rightwing movements of all types, from politics to religion. Does the government ecumenicize something in December? It's the War against Christmas! Is there some movement toward recognition of gay partnerships? It's the War against Marriage! Is there recommendation for a more nuanced foreign policy? It's Surrender to Islam! Is Romney scrutinized? War against Mitt! You must understand, the paranoia and the insecurity and the emotional predispositions come first, and the political analysis is a natural outworking of that.

Main Street Media Trust--Not ME!
On a related note, the headlines today are that the death toll in Iraq has passed that of 9/11. So what should we do? Withdraw? Nobody's reported on the major damage that we have done Al-Qida leadership. Maybe they could interview Osama on this?

As a Vietnam era college student (and Veteran), I do not remember the reporting by the MSM on the death count in Cambodia and Vietnam that was caused by the Communist takeover there. I don't even remember much discussion of the MIAs which have never been accounted for (as of Nov 2000 was 1992 in Vietnam, 421 from Laos, 65 from Cambodia, and 8 from China from all branches of the Armed Forces). So the MSM lost their credibility with me on the last war, not this one.

I propose that Republicans put their money where their mouth is and quit reading, linking to, or otherwise recognizing the papers owned by the major left media franchises (NYT, LAT, WP, BG, AJC, BS (appropriate for the Baltimore Sun, don't you think?). If we would encourage free enterprise to take them down by them becoming uneconomical, it would be a perfect repudiation of their leftist-Marxist brand of disinformation.

Utopian Thought
Would that the Boston area, and the country in general. were populated by thoughtful, objective, analytical people who made a continuing effort to find and use viable information to educate themselves politically. Does anyone believe that to be the case? Even if only the Left faithful continue to read the MSM product and believe it, that still translates into tens of millions. And they aren't looking for alternatives. It is also of consequence that states like NY and CA continue under the sway of traditional "Times" pubs and also represent tremendous political clout. Meanwhile, schools everywhere are busy churning out new generations of left-leaning voters, all of which makes it difficult to become all dewy-eyed over Mitt and the Globe. Romney may be a great candidate, but HOW WILL HE GET HIS MESSAGE, AND HIS IMAGE, TO THE NATIONAL VOTERS? Right now he is running from far behind. See recent Iowa and NH polls.

Look within.
What I can't figure out is why the MSM would fear Romney to the point of destroying his candidacy two years out. Here's the thing: Everything negative that you are now hearing about Romney is coming from social conservatives. The media is lazy. They only print stories presented to them from others. Since Romney in 2008 would be the Democrats' perfect opponent, the negative stories must be coming from elsewhere.

If Hewitt likes Romney so much, he should start exposing those in the Christian right who are determined to discredit him. The media, while lazy, is not always the villian.

Oh, Hugh!
I remember your predictions on the radio just before the November election...that the GOP would retain both the House and the Senate....based on that prediction....your future predictions are suspect.
Only you Hugh believe the American people after
8 years of Bush want 4 more years of Republican
rule.

First you think that illegal immigration is only important to white people, and then assume taht everyone to whom the issue is important is a bigot

Stupid, but not the least bit surprising, from a "progressive thinker" such as yourself

I'm curious: Do you have a single person who you call a good friend that isn't caucasian? When I hear people like you, who seem to think that immigration is the most important issue facing the country - and it is important, just not the most important - I tend also to find a person who is uncomfortable with minorities. I surely hope that we don't have those types trolling this blog under the guise of being "conservative."

Irrelevant
Well, they just continue to make themselves more and more irrelevant, as fewer and fewer people read that publication.

I think the fact Gore had more votes in that state than their own guy is a little revealing about how powerful their sway is. That means that previous Gore votes went over to Bush in 2004 or just stayed home.

So what they say about Romney doesn't worry me as most people don't pay any attention to them anyway.

I am eager to see Romney in a national forum so I can evaluate him for myself.

But the Mayan calandar?! This is HUGH'S show, not Art's. :-)

Nice plug JM lol

Romney is the best that is out there and running atm. But his illegal (notice that word) immigration stance needs to toughen.

I wish the MSM would learn that not too many people are against immigration, it's the illegal immigration that gets us riled up. The kind they like to cover for without using the word.

WTF?!?!?
What in the ever-lovin' WORLD does the Mayan calandar have to do with *anything*???

Having a sane political discussion on this site is hard enough; must we bring in the lunatic "Chariots of the Gods", the-flying-saucers-are-comin-to-Rapture-us-away, snake-handling, Jeebus-kook fringe as well?
jtb-in-texas writes: Sunday, December, 24, 2006 11:42 AM
Granted the Left hates Romney...
...but does that make him a Conservative?

It's not enough to not be a leftist. Bush/Frist/Hastert showed us we need Conservative leaders, not just Republicans.

It's time to "draw a line in the sand", as it were; and probably already too late.

The Mayan Calendar ends in 2012... Does anyone else think it's kinda creep that, with the increasing threat of Radical Islamist nuclear capability, 2008 may be our last chance to save our country--AND THE REPUBLICANS ARE JUST PUSHING MORE OF THE SAME CRAP THAT LOST LAST MONTH?!?!?

We need our leaders to enforce the laws on the books about Treason, Sedition, Social Security Fraud, Immigration, and so on. We don't need them to lie to us about the damaging effects of the "document-challenged guest workers" invading our country.

If the current crop of Republicans are too timid to lead, they need to be replaced. The answer isn't just "less Democrats". The answer is "more Conservatives".
