"A Civilian National Security Force That's Just As Powerful, Just As Strong, Just as Well-funded" as the U.S. Military: Obama's Latest Pratfall
Posted by: Hugh Hewitt at 5:14 PM
What in the world is Obama talking about? Here's what he said:

We cannot continue to rely on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives we’ve set. We’ve got to have a civilian national security force that’s just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded.

When the Democratic nominee calls for a huge, new national "security force" working domestically, shouldn't someone in the MSM ask him what he means?

Ed Morrissey has the details, including the MSM's refusal to report the amazing call for a DoD-sized "national security force."

Obama represents the most inexperienced, risky major party nominee in American political history, and he is demonstrating that with at best inscrutable off-the-cuff rhetoric on a daily basis, but the MSM bigs are covering for him.  Astonishing.

OK, Obama apologists, what's your messiah talking about here? Let the spinning begin.

It's akin to communism. You know

Only in Obama's world would such a statement be made. One only needs to look at Obama's backers and supporters to see why this notion would even be contemplated.

and people think FISA is bad? Just wait IF Obama manages to manipulate the system and gets elected.

Some Questions
1) Will a "draft" be involved?

2) Will a civilian force get to have guns, planes, bombs, uniforms, etc.?

3) Why not simply encourage more people to join the military we already have? Or the Police?

4) Basically...huh?

I think we've been warned about this...
"Socialism is inseparably interwoven with totalitarianism and the object worship of the state. It will prescribe for every one where they are to work, what they are to work at, where they may go and what they may say. Socialism is an attack on the right to breathe freely. No socialist system can be established without a political police. They would have to fall back on some form of Gestapo, no doubt very humanely directed in the first instance." - Winston Churchill

But I will say that the idea that Obama is going to create some kind paramilitary force styled after the Stasi is more of the same exagerration and fearmongering the right is known for! If you go to the source of this particular hit-piece ( Alex Jones' Infowars.com, you'll find all kinds of references to the "Tri-lateral commission" and the Bilderbergers and all sorts of lingo employed by the conspiratorial/tinfoil hat wearing set. The first impression IS for a Gestapo like police force.
My second thought was that Obama wants to be able to say that he IS spending money for the nation's security while under-funding the military and diverting money to numerous pet social projects.

Why does the right wing have to continually lie to make points. I watched the video, he says we cannot continue to ONLY rely on our military to achieve the national security objectives. BIG difference. If you listen to what he say he wants to open shuttered embassies and enlarge the peace corps. His belief is that we can achieve national security objectives through diplomacy and goodwill as well as military might. Please Hugh stop this nonsense. Correct your story. He is not trying to replace the military, just use in conjunction with other means of improving national security.

I like the symbolism of Nuremburg at Mile High. What do you think he meant when he suggested a militia (force) armed and funded equal to the U.S.Military. No doubt under direct control of the executive branch. Looks like your kids WILL be learning spanish and you will keep your thermostat at the prescribed temperature. You will not criticize the leader and by the way. Elections will not longer be necessary. Do to the shortage of oil, many city dwellers will volunteer to work on collective farms. You'll smack your head when I point it out: find a Republican candidate to run as the Republican candidate! If McCain wasn't so bad, this would be a cakewalk. It isn't the media, IT'S THE REPUBLICAN PARTY!!! Even if all of the non-stop fear-mongering were justified, there is no defending having McCain as the GOP nominee. If electing Obama is THAT DANGEROUS, there can be no alternative. Dump McCain and nominate a Republican, preferably a bona fide conservative. McCain cannot and will not win.

He didn't call for a civilian militia. As I stated before Hugh either lied to you or just copy and pasted someone else's shoddy reporting. He stated we cannot continue to rely ONLY on our military. National security can be achieved in many ways other that through force, such as securing our borders, becoming energy independent , teaching other countries how great our country is (peace corps), rely less on foreign money to support our economy, improving our diplomacy, etc. Its clear his civilian national security would consist of peace corps, americorps, Social Investment fund network, Social Entrepanuer Agency, American Oppurtunity Tax Credit, Energy Corps, YouthBuild, etc. But hey taking time to listen to the actual speech would be a waste of time when Hugh can just hand you the talking points to bash the speech with.

As someone who is not a boomer, but in his 20s, let me be the first to assure you that I too am scared silly by that comment of Obama's.

As mentioned before, we have:

- FBI
- ATF
- US Marshals
- Secret Service
- National Guard
- ICE
- State police & militias

And now he wants a new force just as powerful, strong, and as well funded as the U.S. military -- an organization that continually develops and eventually possesses the next generation of fighter planes, rifles, and body armor for the purpose of waging war against foreign enemies.

I'm sorry, but please name 1 reason why we need a civilian national force that can rival the U.S. military. Call me unimaginative, but the only conceivable reason I can see is for the establishment of a police state.

That's a new one. I guess at some point the leader descends to the same level as his riff-raff followers.

Barack is simply pointing out that soft power requires the same level of national commitment as hard power. Maybe expressed inarticulately, but at least he is heading in the right direction. In case you didn't notice, the Reep approach has put enormous strains on our country--our economy, our culture, and frankly, our character. And you won't get senile moments from him, like with the other guy, moments of plain stupidity, or inappropriate language, or outright befuddlement.

This is off the subject matter,
but i feel compelled to comment on it. The Israeli govt., yesterday, for 2 dead Israeli soldiers, exchanged the very embodiment of Satan, himself, Samir Kuntar. In 1979, this piece of human debris, shot an innocent Jewish father, Danny Haran, in front of his daughters and wife, Kuntar took Haran's 4 year old daughter and smashed her head with his rifle butt, killing her as Haran's wife hid in a crawl space undetected with their 2 year old daughter, to keep them from being detected, she had to hold her hand over the child's mouth very tightly, and in doing so she suffocated the child. Kuntar was captured and convicted of this most heinous crime. In the 80's the Achille Lauro, a cruise ship was hijacked with the intent to free, the scumbag, Kuntar, during this attempt, Leon Klinghoffer was thrown overboard in his wheelchair. Ronald Reagan, Menachem Begin and Yitchak Shamir would NOT give in and Kuntar was not released. But, now, Israel has Olmert and he did give in and Kuntar was released to a hero's welcome in Lebanon. Kuntar saluted the masses with the nazi stiff arm, holding it high and proud as they cheered enthusiastically. Olmert, obambi, leftists, this is their definition of sitting down and talking to the enemy, this is always the result. Hezbollah, today is greatly embolden, they smell weakness, and very bad days are ahead for Israel. Leftists will always choose the cowards way. To them nothing is worth the fight, not the defense of liberty, not the lose of life, nothing. They know nothing but acquiescence and thats what you will get with, obambi. What exactly would an unarmed national security force do to be "powerful, just as strong" and the military.

Seems to be invoking some romantic notion about a powerful Zeitgeist that he proposes to lead in to the new Utopia.

This is of a piece with Obama's declaration that "We are the change we have been waiting for" Obama's seems to be invoking Friedrich Nietzsche's romantic notion about Übermensch as a goal for humanity to set for itself.

"Why can you not answer this simple question? I'll help you out forward the speech to the 16:47 mark"

Oh, I could answer the question all right...if it had any relevance to asnything. Sorry if the speed of my response has been hampered by life getting in the way of debating with an impetuouos little so and so but the burglar alarm just went off at my business and I had to go deal with the police. No civilian militia were needed thankfully.

What difference does the word "only" make to the content of the overall statement?

The problem lies in the comparison of the civilian national security force to the power, strength and funding of the military. If this "force" is going to involve itself in the economy, diplomacy and energy independence then I am all in favor of the idea of a bunch of civilian do-gooders helping out anyway they can. It's the comparison to the military that's got me questioning what the heck he means.

If, as I suspect, you are arguing about the missing word "only" from Hugh's post and not the substance of the issue then I have a different answer. STFU and grow up. Follow the link....obviously he cut and pasted it from there. The omission of that word does not change the idea proposed by BO one iota.

You were dead on target. Olmert is Israel's Obama. Do anything to get elected, do anything to stay in power. Why are we even considering such a step backward for our country. A man that played footsies with the weathermen, who wants to TALK with terrorists, and has no clue how to run this country. Pretends to be the poor little black child when in essence he has had the best this country can offer for decades of his life. And to thank this great country for all of this, he will happily destroy us just for more power. Just like Olmert.

This is illustrative of the broader
idea that babakazama is useless.

In fact the salient difference between babakazama and one of those hapless dimocrat bums I see astride the offramp, dressed as a member of the family Joad and sporting a scrap of carboard reading "Will Work for Food" is that the bum, given enough malt liquor or Gallo White Port could do something somewhat usefull: mow part of the lawn, walk the dog, fertilize a neighbor's yard.

The only thing babakazma can do is spout platitudes and reach deep, deep, deep into my pocket and give my hard earned duckets to a bunch of bums who aren't honest enough to stand on the freeway off-ramp.

I will take McCain, warts and all.

My world is based upon the concept of liberty. Something you execise yet want to take away from others. Obama thinks he knows what is best for us. Based upon his intellect. I think a man named A. Hitler professed the same theory. With socialism must come control. I am not paranoid, that was an album by Black Sabbath. You, ronnie are a troll. You are either not very bright or you are in league with those who would take away may freedom in the name of equality. Equality is not a guarantee in our Consitution. here is the context
after saying he wants to expand the military he says this

Just as we must value and encourage military service across our society, we must honor and expand other opportunities to serve. Because the future of our nation depends on the soldier at Fort Carson, but it also depends on the teacher in East LA, the nurse in Appalachia, the after-school worker in New Orleans, the Peace Corps volunteer in Africa, and the Foreign Service officer in Indonesia. Americans have shown that they want to step up. But we're not keeping pace with the demand of those who want to serve, or leveraging that commitment to meet national challenges. FDR not only enlisted Americans to create employment, he targeted that service to build our infrastructure and conserve our environment. JFK not only called on a new generation, he made their service a bridge to the developing world, and a bright light of American values in the darkest days of the Cold War.

As President, I will expand AmeriCorps to 250,000 slots, and make that increased service a vehicle to meet national goals like providing health care and education, saving our planet and restoring our standing in the world, so that citizens see their efforts connected to a common purpose. People of all ages, stations, and skills will be asked to serve. Because when it comes to the challenges we face, the American people are not the problem - they are the answer.

We'll send more college graduates to teach and mentor our young people. We'll call on Americans to join an Energy Corps to conduct renewable energy and environmental cleanup projects in their neighborhoods. We'll enlist veterans to help other vets find jobs and support, and to be there for our military families. And we'll also grow our Foreign Service, open consulates that have been shuttered, and double the size of the Peace Corps by 2011 to renew our diplomacy.

Dumbo the Idiot said this?

"We cannot continue to rely on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives we’ve set. We’ve got to have a civilian national security force that’s just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded."

ronnie and brob- you can try to spin this any way you want, but "a civilian national security force" does not denote a perky but "kick a**" bunch of civilian works laborers- it just don't. Those two words "security force" kind of give the game away.

Also, he wants it to be "just as powerful, just as strong, and just as well funded" as our military.

Interesting. A "national security force" as powerful, strong, and funded as our military- by his words mind you.

ronnie - How again is it we're being "paranoid"? After all, according to Dumbo the Idiot, "words MEAN something!" I take him at his word- he wants to create an alternative security force to what is currently in place.

Also - he doesn't mention under whose authority this force would be under- is this to be some sort of Republican Guard?

He also doesn't mention how it would be funded, only that it would be as well funded as our military- funny, you and all the other lefty dingbats have been squeaking for months about what a hideous waste of money our military is- why are you okay with doubling that expenditure suddenly? What about THE CHILDREN?

Add into that some other huge growths in government spending (wait until you get the bill for your "universal" health care) and you've probably just, at a minimum, doubled goverment overnight. Yikes!!

We start with BO telling us that Americans are just lining up to serve their country and we're just not letting them 'cause we're big bad meanies....

BO: "Americans have shown that they want to step up. But we're not keeping pace with the demand of those who want to serve, or leveraging that commitment to meet national challenges."

Then a couple of lines later...

BO: "People of all ages, stations, and skills will be ASKED to serve."

Hey...but I thought they were lining up to serve...oh, we're just being polite by "asking" them. I see. And then....

BO: "We'll SEND more college graduates to teach and mentor our young people."

So, I guess the college kids aren't getting a say.

And then...

BO: "We'll CALL on Americans to join an Energy Corps to conduct renewable energy and environmental cleanup projects in their neighborhoods."

Yeah, "call" away. Don't be surprised if the response involves the words up, shut, now, and drill. though.

Next up, the vets...

BO: "We'll ENLIST veterans to help other vets find jobs and support, and to be there for our military families"

All for it. Nice use of the "enlist" word...they are military folk, geddit, sheep? Bleat once for yes. Oh, clever Obama.

And finally...

BO: "And we'll also grow our Foreign Service, open consulates that have been shuttered, and double the size of the Peace Corps by 2011 to renew our diplomacy."

All right - go to http://www.usembassy.gov and tell me where all these shuttered consulates are. Looks like we have most of the planet pretty well served, I'd say. I can just see the official Code Pink/Peace Corps mission to Tehran. That'll have the mullahs quaking in their turbans!

well you can parce words like bill clinton to achieve your dishonest intrepretation, but common sense tells you that he is calling for volunteers.

second, not only is the third ranking state department diplomat meeting face to fact with the iranians as we speak but the bush administration is assigning diplomats to be stationed in tehran.

LONDON (Reuters) - The United States will announce in the next month that it plans to establish a diplomatic presence in Tehran for the first time in 30 years, a British newspaper said on Thursday.

In a front-page report, the Guardian said Washington would open a U.S. interests section in the Iranian capital, halfway towards opening an embassy.

The unsourced report by the newspaper's Washington correspondent said: "The Guardian has learned that an announcement will be made in the next month to establish a U.S. interests section in Tehran, a halfway house to setting up a full embassy.

"The move will see US diplomats stationed in the country."

Senior U.S. diplomat William Burns said in testimony to Congress last week the United States was looking to opening up an interest section in Tehran but had not made a decision yet.

The Guardian said the development was "a remarkable turnaround in policy by President George Bush who has pursued a hawkish approach to Iran throughout his time in office."

Washington said on Wednesday it was sending Burns to join atomic talks with Iran this weekend to signal to Tehran and others that Washington wanted a diplomatic solution to their nuclear impasse.

I work for the Public School District in the Chicago area. Asking 50 hours of volunteer work per year would be asking too much from our kids including the parents. They will say its unconstitutional if Obama's plan goes into force.

We have a constitutional crisis when we ask the young people to pull up their "hang off your butt" pants. Parents get all upset if we require kids not to use the calculators when they're doing the multiplication problems.

If Obama does becomes President children will have to obey The One. It would be interesting to see how fast it fails because of lack of cooperation.

The American Protective League
Woodrow Wilson had over 100,000 Americans arrested and jailed for thought crimes. He was assisted in this work by the American Protective League -- a 250,000-man strong, largely oversight-free, federally-empowered, political thug force.

Obama's civilian national security force idea, undefined though it is, manages to give off an odor a lot like Wilson's American Protective League.

ronnie, lgf82, et al. all need to crack a book once in a while and see what the policies they support have wrought in the past.

Hugh keeps saying that Obama is the most radical major candidate ever. Maybe Obama really will be worse than Wilson.

With so many folks willfully embracing their inner stupid, we might have the misfortune of finding out.

AND, she's Drop Dead Gorgeous! Hey, when mixed with brains, toughness and talent, that whole DDG thing is really a plus! Many of the ladies of Clintonville are still p!ssed outta their minds.

Pat, I'm a lifelong(registered)Democrat who only re-registered Repub whrn we moved from L.A. to Central Florida 2-years ago. But, I was 'mugged by reality' 1978-1982 and haven't voted for the Sandinista luvin' Twits since. I was for Rudy..then Mitt...now Johnny Little. I'd work up true enthusiasm if he'd pick Sarah--DDG!

Hey, Neo - not to my mind
Palin is the gov of a small state (700,000) and has only been at it a short while. She's nearly a complete unknown quantity, and has no national experience. This is too much identity politics for me. If she were a he, no story.

Besides that, she's the new mum of a baby boy with DS. There's only one lady in the world that can be his mom, but there are plenty of veeps out there. A national campaign such as we have today will make it impossible for her to do both jobs.

From my own experience, I know very well what it takes to make sure this little guy stays on track developmentally, and there's no way under heaven she can do both. Sure, dad is there, but it takes everything a family has and more - and the early years seem to be the most critical.

If she becomes VP, I will not have much respect for her and I'll feel sorry for her little one. Nannies are not going to cut it.

Barry Husseins private, public army
The Obamessiah wants everyone to become a true employee of the state. All of those slackers in the private sector need to wake up and realize that Big Brother demands your service. Of course, a nice army of brownshirts would come in quite handy for the kicking down of doors when the reformed Marxist Supreme Court puts the question of the 2nd amendment right and finally overturns it! This is the scariest SOB I can ever remember in American politics--at least with an actual chance of winning the White House!! Anyone not armed had better correct the situation.

You Sainted Lad!
God bless the work. McCain has a goldmine in Disaffected Democrats and Sarah Palin is some fine looking trim! My late sainted wife Mary would clout me roundly for my overt sexism - he'll I'm widowed Sweetie; I ain't dead.

Me and two of the three kids are voting for Johnny Mac as are most of my neighbors.

We vote Democratic in the precincts and Ward and with good sense in the voting booth on State and National races.

I like Mitt - too ruggedly handsome for my tastes - McCain is a lumpy throw rug with good sense and fortune to marry above or looks and inclinations -like most of us. Mitt would be OK, But Palin would seal the deal.

Do you have any feelings about how her new baby will affect her ability to campaign, or more importantly, how her job as VP will affect her baby?

I never see any Palin supporters address either question. Or her inexperience, for that matter. For most people her being a good-looking conservative female governor is enough.

There just isn't enough substance there for me, and how she will fare in a national campaign is a complete unknown. Too risky.

Fuzzy foreign policy
I'm no Obama fan, but after listening to the speech, it seems to me Obama is not talking about some domestic security force. He thinks the Peace Corp IS a national security force. This goes along with his idea that he could talk all the terrorists out of attacking us. He's convinced that despite evidence to the contrary, the terrorists are all poor and uneducated, so if America just did away with global poverty and ignorance there would be world peace (and no doubt the oceans would subside as well). This is not a diabolical plan to control the opposition at home unless you count the confiscatory taxes that would be required to fund this pipe dream.

Typical liberal spew
The root cause of everyone's problem is always money. Give people money and all the world's problems will go away. Evenly distribute wealth and nobody's unhappy anymore.

Uh, yeah, communism's sure proved that right.

So the reason that our 40+ year investment in Peace Corps hasn't yielded world peace is that we haven't given enough? Nonsense. We've given more charity than any nation on earth and people are still discontent with us. In fact, the ones who chant 'death to America' have been nothing but takers. They give nothing back to the world yet they hate the ones who do. They hate because of their cultural self-absorption and greed. No amount of money is going to cure those problems. Money will fuel their cultural self-absorpton. Lack of money will fuel greed. It's a no win proposition.

He matched this "WTF" today with "from the bomb that fell on Pearl Harbor" while emoting on our national security. If only it was just one bomb, WWII vets would probably say. Or as Bluto would say:

"Did we give up when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?"

"The Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?"

"Forget it, he's rolling."

Seems the MSM is taking the Animal House approach to Obama's words of wisdom.

Now I have one question to ask about Obammy's idea of a citizen militia. How the hell can he advocate that idea and still maintain that military contractors should be peeling potatoes and catering mess to the troops. That the military contractors are somehow hindering our military's efficiency and standing? I see a scurvy politician's double talk in effect here now don't you all?

These folks don't want no stinkin' context. It's so clear what Obama meant- basically, he's talking about noncontroversial programs like the Peace Corps and Americacorps which were wildly popular under Kennedy and Clinton- but remember the game here is to make Obama into some kind of wild-eyed radical. Otherwise the election is a blowout.

Look at how this blog tried to whip up this phony issue today while ignoring the REAL story today- Malicki basically endorsing Obama's plan. Maliki the "surrender monkey"? LOL! That sound you hear is the door slamming on the McCain campaign.

Speaking of belly laughs, I see you're still affecting that pseudo-hip literary style.

For those of you who DON'T have your head up your keister: the corporate media serves the Reeps in several important respects. First, tabloid journalism always benefits the right--or anyone who panders to the lesser angels of our nature. Second, although most teevee reporters are socially liberal, they are fiscally conservative. Unlike the press, say, in Truman's era, television reporters are high income folks who appreciate the Reep stance on taxes. Third, despite the personal liberalism of journalists, the final product reaching the viewer is something else again. Not only do "liberal" reporters bend over to check their own impulses, what reaches the public is filtered beyond this "Ben Dover" process. Fourth, journalistic neutrality is confused with journalistic objectivity. Media-types think there are two--and only two--sides to the issue. Given that right-wingism is the plurality opinion in our fragmented and decentralized body politic, guess who gets over-represented?! They number about one in three, but they get half the air-time. Fifth, a "non-conservative" media is not an "anti-conservative" media. Sixth, in the end, corporate political machines like GE and Fox and Disney will work with Dems, but they prefer Reeps.

This phony nonsense about a "liberal media" has been false for 25 years. Goldwater may have been its victim, but none of you clowns ever were. You have been a beneficiary of a lazy, cowardly, tabloidesque, craven, power-worshiping media. It is a joke, a joke compounded by all your blubbering and whining over the past decades. As for us, we know the media is in the tank, but we're gonna win this thing anyhow.
Patriotic Liberal writes: Sunday, July, 20, 2008 6:11 PM
Just as an example
The anchors accompanying Barack on the foreign trip is taken as an example of the liberal bias. After all, McCain didn't have the big hitters accompany him on his foreign trip. But in fact, if their tone is snide and critical, all the added coverage does is amp up the snide criticism. It does not prove a frigging liberal bias. Quite the contrary.

So in the final analysis, it doesn't matter that the notion of a right-wing orientation to the American media is completely counter-intuitive to the way you guys look at things. There are a lot of truths that are counterintuitive. Another one is that it is the Reeps--not the liberals--who are operating these days at the emotional level, on the level of "feeeeeelings". They have no other moral compass, and the floundering invective they hurl in these parts is proof of that.

What the hell is BWHAAAAAAAAAAAA supposed to mean?! That you're an idiot or something?!

Just because you know what a duck is doesn't mean you know which way the wind blows. Your "argument" reduces to this: "I have never looked at it that way, therefore it must not be true."

As someone who believes in rational clarity, and not mere emotional self-insistence, let me help you: the media is not a Reep Gator. It is not Dem or Reep per se. But it serves the Reeps much more than it serves the Dems. If you can't see that, tough. There are more interesting things in this old world than Neocon's subjectivism.
