McCain Hearts CAFE
Posted by: Hugh Hewitt at 2:28 PM
From the Wall Street Journal on October 9 of last year:

Arizona Sen. John McCain didn’t expect an enthusiastic response this morning when he touted the need for higher fuel standards to the Detroit Economic Club. No surprise, the crowd didn’t exactly embrace the idea.

Asked how raising Corporate Average Fuel Economy standards was “different than raising taxes,” McCain acknowledged he didn’t think his proposal would be very popular. “I know, I said it’s a tough issue. CAFE standards have to be improved. There’s too much pollution in the environment, there’s too much dependency on foreign oil and we’re going to have to take a number of steps,” McCain told the crowd.

He finished his answer to dead silence.

“I noticed no applause,” McCain deadpanned, which drew a few laughs and some clapping from the crowd.

The question is whether voters in Michigan generally care that Senator McCain is CAFE-happy.

It is a trick I've noticed the Lefties use on C-Span. They call in on the Republican line, then go off the deep end on some homosexual/racial rant. They sound derranged. Their deceitful purpose is to mislead the gullible masses (i.e. PL, Broberta, and Bugsy)into believing they are actual Conservatives when they are Leftist propangandists. In fact they may be Broberta,PL, or Bugsy!!!
I believe that defines Peak Oil.

It's not my intention that you to listen to me. Your comments reveal someone that is exceedingly bitter, so much so, that you seem to be unbalanced. From what i have read, i must say, that, i have no idea, where you are politically. If you are indeed conservative, nothing you have written, so far, would suggest that, but, one thing that IS clear is that you have a visceral hatred of the term "neocon". Given my definition of said term, i would be one and whether that qualifies or disqualifies me from being listened to is something, that, i suppose is out of my hands. To conclude, i would quote the Apostle Paul, "i am what i am by the grace of God".

Medved calls Hugh a liar
During the course of our conversation, I deplored the slimy negative ads aired by his candidate, Mitt Romney – in particular a TV commercial where the narrator says that John McCain “voted to allow illegals to collect Social Security.”

I condemned the ad as an outright lie, but Hugh defended it as an arguable, reasonable description of McCain’s position.

Let’s settle the issue, Hugh, and move ahead to that apology—because the record clearly shows that I was right and you were wrong. There’s nothing defensible about Romney’s smear

Romney Cutbacks Have Begun
Associated Press is reporting that Romney is pulling his ads from South Carolina and Florida. Virtually conceding both of those races to Mike Huckabee.

Many have wondered if Rudy will make his comeback in Florida, and he well could. But Romney's move allows an easier division of the pie. True social conservatives will have only the one candidate opposing the social liberal Giuliani.

Huckabee's internet team should immediately use this bit of news to RAISE money for those two races specifically - especially Florida.

The Associated Press implies that John McCain will contest for South Carolina - which he did aggressively in 2000 - but something tells me that this is a very different year.

Nonetheless this may be the right play for Romney, a big win in Michigan would be something he would not have seen to date.

McLame is being honest when he says proudly that he buys into the Environmentalist-Whacko, as are Hillary and Obama when they say the same things. I applaud them for their honesty. Libs like those three usually arent so frank. I fault them on their logic. The government should not be setting fuel milage standards for cars at all. The expanding number of people in the world who drive cars and our insane policies against domestic drilling (supported by McLame) will ensure that large cars will soon be a thing of the past. McLame is not a conservative. He is a big government lib, just like Hillary.

McCain more conservative than Romney

Although McCain voted against the Bush tax cuts in 2001 and 2003, Romney was not in favor of them either while he was Governor of Massachusetts. Noteworthy is the fact that McCain favored the Reagan tax cuts during the 1980s, while Romney indicated a lack of support for the Reagan program during his unsuccessful 1994 Senate run against Ted Kennedy...

Nevertheless, McCain’s message of cutting federal spending and eliminating budget earmarks is hitting home. More and more voters seem to be increasingly worried about excess government spending. McCain is the favorite on this issue.

McCain’s supply-side credentials have been boosted by Jack Kemp’s endorsement earlier this week, as well as the Arizonan’s campaign message that he will work to make the Bush tax cuts permanent.

Senator McCain is also arguing that if the Bush tax cuts had been accompanied by stronger spending restraint, then there would be plenty of budget room for across-the-board tax cuts today. Incidentally, the Bushies are preparing a very weak-kneed temporary tax cut plan right now that as yet, has no big bang supply-side cuts such as slashing the corporate tax rate.

To the contrary, it's your side that says, "anyone can't, i can't, i did because i was lucky". That's your anthem, and you've been singing it since 1912', it's failed everywhere it's been tried and if someone disagrees, you label them a "racist". I don't know about H.L but you need to get a job, you spend all day everyday, right here, and if you ever had a perspective, you've long since lost it. I guess people don't like Straight Talk
We all want to be weaned off foreign oil, but the minute anyone says anything tough they get batted down. In other words.

We are in favor of subsidizing ethanol because it would make Iowa rich, even though farm subsidies are against our conservative values.

We are in favor of subsidizing the oil companies to drill even though they have made profits beyond belief.

So McCain wants some sticks along with the carrots. The last time CAFE standards occurred the car companies screamed murder too, but oil dropped to a low of $10 per barrel and all 3 car car companies made a comeback.

I am sure Romney is in favor of subsidizing the car makers when they run into trouble. Now that would be a conservative philosophy as espoused by our Republican party.

It is used so infrequently, 3 or 4 times since 9/11, that it hardly merits conversation but it seems that we hear more about it than we do the grisly and numerous instances of decapitation by this country's enemies. One reason for this, i suspect, is that our enemies have allies here, that wish to portray our Military in the worst possible light.

illegal immigration
The problem with illegal immigration is in the details. A clear majority don't like the general idea of illegal immigration. That is why border security is a winning issue. However, not many people are enthusiastic about deporting an illegal grandmother who has been here 20 years working with citizen kids and grandkids. There has to be a solution that addresses the details. McCain recognizes this reality and tried to craft legislation that could become law. Granted, he did it in a backroom way and didn't respond to public input, but this is a representative republic. There really isn't a mechanism for public input on crafting the details of legislation. He tried to get the best deal he could and then he tried to sell it. The public didn't buy it. So it has to be recrafted. He seems to understand this. In the end, there has to be a comprehensive solution. The anti-amnesty crowd has to acknowledge the details. Should McCain be disqualified for this bill? I don't think so.

My only cautionary note is that it's a weekend poll.

From a conversation last night with someone completely alien to Planet Politics, but smart and insightful in her way.

I want to like Romney. I think he's a good man, a generous man. But his nervous system is pitched too high. He doesn't let things come to him, but feels he has to try to catch everything, even if it's way over his head. He feels he has to be perfect.

Why not let the executives and management in Detroit figure this out. What other industries need the force of government to make strategic decisions for their own good?"

I see your point, but for whatever reason, Detroit has been unwilling to make these changes on their own. Perhaps even the threat of regulation will "encourage" them to adopt these benchmarks on their own. And for candidates, it's just good politics to get behind them especially for Republicans who are vulnerable to charges of being in the pockets of Detroit and the oil companies.

Do you believe there is a finite supply of oil in the world? I do. With the industrialization of China and India I do not think tying the future prosperity of our country to oil is wise. GERAGHTY THE INDISPENSABLE!! (Pt. 2)
Sorry, Hannity, I Maintain Michigan Is Make-or-Break For Romney

Hannity thought arguments that Michigan might doom Romney were nonsensical. “I thought he was finished if he didn’t win Iowa.”

Michigan will be the third major test of Romney's skills as a candidate, and he's come up short in the first two. In Iowa, he led the polls, often by wide margins, from May to November. In New Hampshire, he led the polls, often by wide margins, from May to mid-December. In both states, his get-out-the-vote operations were, by all accounts, well-oiled machines. He dominated the airwaves in both states. By many accounts, he won the last debate in New Hampshire.

And he still couldn't win.

As Mark Steyn put it last night, "the consistency of Mitt's underperformance (the dogged candidate who comes in a reliable second wherever he runs) that should be deeply disconcerting to his supporters."

When you’re self-financing, you can buy yourself a lot of second chances. And yes, Romney is leading the delegate count. But is the plan to gather the most delegates by finishing in second place in enough states that award delegates proportionally?

Where's he going to win? I realize that after last night, we need to be cautious in putting our faith in polls, but for Romney, South Carolina's not looking that great. Mid-December polls put him in pretty tough shape in Florida, and the second-place finisher in that state walks away with nada*. He's nowhere in Pennsylvania. He's not set to win New Jersey. You figure Rudy walks away with winner-take-all New York and Connecticut. (Although maybe Lieberman could help McCain there.)

At some point, Mitt Romney's got to go out and win a hotly-contested state. Wyoming is nice, but it's not decisive. He's got to show that when you throw him into a hard-fought, no-quarter-given-or-asked political fight, he can come out on top.

Sen. McCain has just delivered his victory speech. It was gracious and eloquent, the only negative being that he read it.

But here's the thing that struck me: McCain devoted part of his speech (and not just a passing reference) to the war on terror and, in particular, to winning it. That's not something I recall hearing in the victory speeches of Barack Obama and Mike Huckabee, nor would I expect to hear it from Hillary Clinton should she pull out a win tonight.

McCain operates at a level of seriousness that the rest of the field struggles, usually unsuccessfully, to match. That's why, for all the things I disagree with McCain about, I don't find myself terribly disappointed by tonight's result.

Jonathan Martin reports that Mitt Romney has not re-upped his television ad buys in South Carolina, suggesting that Michigan will make or break his campaign...

Romney's campaign is over if he loses in Michigan. Which means there would be four candidates - McCain, Huckabee (now the national frontrunner), Giuliani, and Thompson - competing in South Carolina. Thompson hasn't done much, and barring a surprise outcome in South Carolina, it's likely he will depart the field after the Palmetto state votes and rejects him. That would leave three candidates - McCain, Huckabee, and Giuliani - to compete in Florida. The GOP race may go from a five-way to a three-way in a little more than a week from now.

And then comes the interesting part. A lot of conservatives have problems with both Huckabee and McCain. Last night on Fox, for example, Sean Hannity could barely conceal his distaste for both pols. Rush Limbaugh and the Wall Street Journal editorial page also have problems with the Huck and the Mac. National Review endorsed Romney in December. How would these conservatives cope with Romney's failure? It's possible they will side with McCain in the end. Some of them may give Giuliani a second look. But a disappointing finish for Rudy in Florida would make this a two-man race by late night January 29 . Then Republicans would choose between the preacher and the warrior.

Of course, the way things have been going so far, it's likely we'll be blindsided a few more times before the race is won.

You're free to disagree with McCain all you like, but shame on you for suggesting this man is weak and a disgrace. You're not worthy of his spit.

"There’s too much pollution in the environment, there’s too much dependency on foreign oil and we’re going to have to take a number of steps,” McCain told the crowd."

Help me figure this out SK-2008. McCain wants to reduce our dependency on foreign while at the same time restricting our ability to drill for our own domestic sources while at the same time advocating for policies that will greatly increase our population and therefore the demand for foreign oil. Please tell me how all of this is supposed to happen in the real world -- you know, the non-sound bite non-campaign slogan world. Oh yeah, I know the answers...new unproven technologies, new taxes, new fees, and new caps. Yeah this guy's a real conservative!

I do, the major pollution problem DOES NOT come from the US. Yes we depend on Saudi oil, but McCain does not want us to drill.

What steps? Do you have any idea what we use oil for? Heck your key board is made of it.

GERAGHTY THE INDISPENSABLE!!
The Gage memo contends, “Gov. Romney is the best candidate in the Republican field to match up against the Democrats in the fall.” I’d like to believe that Romney would debate either Democrat excellently. But let’s just note that in the head-to-heads, Romney gets beat pretty regularly against Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, and John Edwards. In fact, he has yet to top Obama or Edwards in any head-to-head matchup in a poll.

In fact... I don't know how much stock you want to put in a SurveyUSA poll of 532 registered voters, but they have Hillary tied with Romney... in Alabama.

By contrast, McCain has matched up pretty well against the Democrats, and Giuliani tops Hillary every now and then.

The memo continues, “Note that Gov. Romney actually beat John McCain among Republicans yesterday (35%-34%) and most of the upcoming primaries and caucuses attract an electorate far more Republican than New Hampshire’s.”

Whoohoo! One percent! No way that lead could change in any future contests!

It also has my favorite McCain-Romney moment from a debate. When Governor Management Speak tried to leave wiggle room on the surge McCain called him on his attempted weaseling. "The surge IS working Governor, not APPEARS, IS." One politician staked his candidacy on or troops in Iraq, while the other wanted to leave enough room to denounce it later if things went bad. That my friends is the difference between management and leadership.

Okay here's the problem with John Mccain.

I thought Congress just passed a bill that called for it to be increased so the comment was moot. But John Mccain claimed that conservatism is global warming. Excuse me in the last sixteen years the United States has had slower growth than europe in greenhouse gases despite faster economic growth. There are 400 scientists including the founder of the weather channel.

I don't like Bush's immigration policy give amensty which Senator running for President is the biggest supporter of that! So to say he's the anti Bush candidate is the joke.

If he wants to be a real reformer why didn't he carry president Bush's bold security plan.

John Mccain is a liberal democrat and I feel insulted when he claims his values is conservative values. And if you think this is a joke you don't know what true conservatism is.

Tom DeLay Slams McCain, Calls New Hampshire Win ‘A Blip’
by FOXNews.com
Wednesday, January 9, 2008

By Chad Pergram

John McCain’s win in New Hampshire did not impress former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay.

Revealing a divide in the Republican Party between moderates and conservatives, DeLay slammed McCain in an interview Wednesday with FOX News.

“There’s nothing redeeming about John McCain,” DeLay said.

The Texas Republican added that McCain “does betray conservative principles.”

When asked on which issues McCain was not a conservative, he said: “Mercy, there’s tons of them” and proceeded to list the Senator’s positions on the environment, immigration, the International Criminal Court, his support for affirmative action and taxes. He also called McCain a “hypocrite” when it came to lobbyists.

The Texas Republican went on to dismiss McCain’s victory as “A blip. An aberration in the nominating process of the Republican Party.”

DeLay said this was because New Hampshire is a state that’s trending Democratic (it replaced its two GOP House Members in 2006 with two Democrats and GOP Senator John Sununu has a tough re-election fight on his hands this year) and allows independents to vote in the Republican primary.

“He (McCain) appealed once again to independents,” DeLay said. “He’s not going to go much further than New Hampshire.”

McCain could struggle in South Carolina. President Bush clobbered him there in 2000. But eight years ago, he won Michigan, which votes next week.

DeLay also took a shot at press coverage of McCain, who described him as a “darling of the media.”

When asked about the divisions in the party between moderates and conservatives, DeLay said “I don’t think there’s a schism in the party. The party doesn’t exist. It’s rebuilding.”

Huckabee 22%

That's the really noteworthy part right there, that last. Rudy has never been this low before.

As recently as November 20, Rudy and Fred were still 1st-2nd. Now they're 5th-4th.

The top five now are ordered in the reverse of how they stood on 11/2: Rudy 23%, Fred 18%, Mitt & John 13%, Huck 10%.

They realize that the future of the car industry is better building cars that get better mileage and lower emissions. If Detroit doesn't do it, teh Japanese will.

My bet is McCain picks up many more voters than he loses not only in Michigan but everywhere else for that matter.

And I agree wholeheartedly with the poster above. How refreshing to see a politician who doesn't pander -- or change his views unlike say, the Mittster. That being said, if McCain gets traction from this stance, look for Mitt to take the exact same position.

McCain is winning the anti-Bush vote
McCain is crushing Romney among those unsatisfied with the Bush Presidency -- McCain loses to Romney among those who are satisfied with the Bush Presidency. These voters really don't care what McCain's positions are (in NH many of the McCain voters disapproved of the war, but voted for McCain because McCain was perceived as the candidate was most identified with opposing Bush policies.)

Unless Romney can let people know that he thinks the next President needs to change things and do a better job than the current President, he's not going to win, and it doesn't matter what his stands on the issues are, or what McCain's stand on any particular issue happens to be

ABC news is also reporting the Romney pull back from SC and Fl:

'Romney's campaign disclosed today that it had pulled its TV ads from South Carolina and Florida, focusing on the Great Lake State up North.

"They're putting it all on Michigan," said Ed Rollins, national chairman for the Huckabee campaign. '

Once again, if Mitt cannot compete in the South, the geographic base of the GOP, he can't win. He has looked at Huck's strenght in FL and SC and given up even before the fight.

Mitt can't win in the Midwest, he can't win in the North, and he can't even compete in the South.

I am going down to the bar for a tall glass of ethenol.
