Below, Hugh Hewitt has posted audio of Rev. Wright's sermons, and Amanda has live-blogged his PBS interview with Bill Moyers here.
Reading and listening to the Wright material makes it hard not to feel sorry for the minister, who obviously is trapped under a load of bitterness and resentment for America and so many of its people. His insistence that hatred is being directed toward African-Americans seems uncomfortably like projection.
What's particularly noteworthy is his statement about Barack: "I do what I do, he does what politicians do." It's remarkable that a pastor and Obama's self-proclaimed "mentor" would essentially identify the statements of one of his flock as nothing more than insincere political pandering (and it's likewise remarkable that, in his haste to justify himself, he'd willingly damage Obama's candidacy by coming forward now). So much for the "new" politics Barack was supposed to be heralding.
But most troubling of all, Wright's statement about Barack "do[ing] what politicians do" raises again some uncomfortable questions about the candidate. One has to wonder: In his comfortable certainty that Barack is distancing himself for political reasons alone, what does Rev. Wright know about him that we don't know?

Amercans should as Obama who is more bitter - the middle class americans who enjoy hunting, church and argue against illegal immigration or his pastor who thinks our military has the moral equivalence of al qaeda? Wright is the most ignorant, angry, racist lunatic I've ever listened to. Did he explain how AIDS was invented to kill by whites to kill blacks? Did he explain why blacks lead in having children out of wedlock and now they are up to 7 out of 10 kids being born into unwed teenage girls? Did he explain the state of the black community i.e. illiteracy and how Obama's hand outs continue to keep blacks dependent and down trodden while other non-whites excel? He is a poor excuse for a former marine and a disgrace as a 'spiritual leader' maybe he should identify himself as a black panther then we can all agree he does his job very well. Shame on Obama for sitting under his leadership, picking him as a mentor and letting his helpless kids listen to this verbage - shame, shame, shame. Even as he loses his bid for his presidency, he should be ashamed for putting his kids through this hateful, angry 'preaching'. And the suit does not fool americans, they can tell a fake when we see one. |

Obama needed street cred. He joined a big church like Wright's to do so. Wright, who is one of those secular Christians, saw a star and they mutually worked together. So Wright is not really Obama's Christian minister as much as a backer. Obama just showed up, didn't really care what was said cause he was not listening anyway. He wasn't there to learn about faith and God, he was there for votes. Therefore, they really don't need to be made a big deal of. Sort of like the Clinton marriage. They had an arrangement.
This situation makes sense. Many politicians only go to church because they are supposed to. The only catch here is that Wright is a raving maniac. This does point to Obama's lack of awareness of his surroundings and his political savvy that he stayed so long. Or maybe he's just too lazy to move on. |

According to Obama is not just a christian backer or pastor - he is one of the most influencial people in his life. He has said of wright "I can no longer disown him, any more than I can disown my gramma". Before the controversial tapes were discovered, Obama is quoted as saying 'Michelle and Wright are the most influential people in his life'. I agree that there was the street credibility motivation going in. But I believe Obama did find a black father figure in Wright because he did not have any other black father figures in his life. So while the relationship may have started out for political reasons, it did grow to become more than that. He is a mentor and 'most influencial people in Obama's life'. Granted, obama realized that it would be detrimental for him to include Wright in his national campaign - hence - the praying with him behind closed doors and asking him not to stand with him when he made his public announcement that he will be running for office. Just because the first part of political backing is true, does not make the other part of mentor untrue. This is what is worrisome of voters. The extremely close relationship and influence Wright has on Obama. How many people wright a book influenced by their pastors messages? Obama did.

Obama's views that he would meet with the Iranian president without preconditions. And Raul Castro without preconditions. And that he would give 850 billion, in addition to what we already give to the UN. And his poverty act to give africans and arabs our tax dollars to eradicate poverty. Gives us enough evidence that Barak is more foreign focused and less american focused. He believes like the black liberation theologians believe that USA should be degraded to the level of other nations that perceive us to be arrogant and mean by redistributing our tax dollars in the name of 'diplomacy'. Unlike Bush or McCain who will use the military to influence the world and give USA a leadership position, Obama will use the US big tax base to redistribute the wealth to middle eastern nations and african nations and weaken our military all in the name of 'diplomacy'. Isn't that precious! He will also put africa/black interest above all other interests. Again in the name of 'community organizing and support programs' so that the whites will not realize they are being disenfranchised. If he had it his way, Africa and Blacks in this nations would get all the tax dollar advantages while caucasians, europe and latin countries - would be left out of the dream. Why? His religions requires it. |

Moyers rolled over like a well-trained dog. I really want an answer to the HIV and crack allegations.
The more I think about the interview, the more I think Wright came across as a self-righteous prick. Happy retirement in the lily-white suburbs where he's moving. |

in agreement with all who bash America as evil while he cashes his govt checks. Lunacy. Kafka wrote about this. |

ask about the GW pollution Wright's $1.8 MILLION mansion is causing?
Oh Wright, I forgot.... |

Anyone else who sees it differently is not seeing what middle America will see.
Now if he can do likewise on Monday before the National Press Club there will be blowback on the media's portrayal of his speeches. I do not disagree that there could have been tougher questions. But there was nothing inappropriate in the interview. Just some things left out - should have been longer. Monday might prove to have tougher questions. We will see.
Those uncomfortable questions to Barack would be for all politicians. And we ask them all the time. Don't we? I know I do.

I am especially drawn to the comment 'what politicians do'. I think there is a significant difference between the two democratic candidates even though they have similar declared positions. Obama is saying what he needs to say to prevent the general electorate from seeing how leftist he is while Clinton is saying what she needs to say to make the base of the democratic party think she is more to the left than she actually is. |

When I read the comments on this page, I wonder who is less Christlike:
Reverend Wright or the boggers on this page
