Al is out the door:
Mr. Gonzales, who had rebuffed calls for his resignation, submitted his to President Bush by telephone on Friday, the official said. His decision was not immediately announced, the official added, until after the president invited him and his wife to lunch at his ranch near here. Mr. Bush has not yet chosen a replacement but will not leave the position open long, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because the resignation had not yet been made public. Mr. Bush had repeatedly stood by Mr. Gonzales, an old friend and colleague from Texas, even as Mr. Gonzales faced increasing scrutiny for his leadership of the Justice Department, over issues including his role in the dismissals of nine United States attorneys late last year and whether he testified truthfully about the National Security Agency’s surveillance programs. Gonzales leaves without about one political ally to his name, and now we'll hear another cloying Bush speech about how a guy no one really liked and who brought considerable problems upon the administration through his own bone-headedness was actually the greatest guy evuh.
The U.S. attorneys scandal has always struck me as a boring and hollow one, but Gonzales didn't handle it well once it broke. In addition, he hadn't earned a lot of friends in the conservative movement, so when liberal blogs and activists went after him, there were very few who bothered to speak up on his behalf. He inspired outlandish (and unwarranted) hate on the Left and just about nothing on the Right, and it's hard for anyone to stay employed in that environment.
I don't think it's entirely Gonzo's fault that he was left without friends. He's suffering largely from the Bush fatigue of the entire nation, including conservatives, and the ever-increasing Bush Derangement Syndrome of the Left. His tenure might not otherwise have ended this way, but hey, them's politics.
News conference at 10:30 a.m., and then the replacement...
Maybe Chertoff?
Update: Avoiding the confirmation fight?
The acting attorney general with be Solicitor General Paul Clement. He "can stay in that position for quite a while," a senior administration official said. That would avoid a bruising confirmation fight. Some Democratic senators have vowed now to confirm a Gonzales successor. Update: Video of the aforementioned cloying speech.

That title is for all the Reagan fans out there.
Gonzales was nothing more than a chimp dancing to the music of this present administration, congress and senate.
We can complain and moan about him all day long, but while we were watching the chimp dance, laws were passed destroying America. And those men and woman are still there. |
|
|
... not forgot. If he does do Chertoff, it will be sticking it to the base. I don't doubt it at this point. The ones he insulted witht the CIRA Chertoff helped write and pushed. I hope not. |

I am personally glad for the resignation of A.G. Gonzales. The job of the Attorney General is to represent the state in legal matters, NOT political matters. His politicalization of the office by firing liberal attorneys is unaceptable and in violation of the spirit of the constitution. I say that political standings for the position of the Attorney General should not be considered, rather the subjects legal experience. This should promote a fair legal system without a right or left bias. |

This brings up a good question, Is it time for the U.S. troops to leave Iraq? Please give support at http://www.pollicious.com by answering the poll and giving the conservative voice. Thanks! |

Tell us more about yourself, you're fascinating! |

thanks for the clarification. if the chain of command works the way it is supposed to, shouldn,t the assistant ag be the next to step up to the plate instead of "pal of mine" i.e solicitor geneals, assistant? just nit-picking "tee-hee". nothing like being caught with egg on your face. george really stepped on it this time. as long as he had his base behind him, he could have done no wrong. even those rats are deserting sinking ship. |
|
|
I'm sorry for nitpicking, but it's an "L" and an "I", not a "5" and a "1". But just call me Mike from now on. I'm sorry. |

glad rg has finally had the real testicular mass to step down. there's no comfort in being the fall guy. his boss's words really don't mean any thing any more. his credibility does not mean diddly squat. gb would sell out him own poor old dear mom, to make himself look good. he was only following the orders of his boss, but what happened is that those fired judges did not take their dismissal lying down and fought back. also the fbi guy countered rg's testimony and rg just did not come across as a credible witness and was not even able to defend himself at all. i do believe that gb needs to stop listening to talk show hosts and listen to his own counsel, if he has any fortitude left at all. now rg has shown some reals guts i must say. did not just last week or so gb stated that he was sticking by rg. that's real loyalty for you. also 51jazz, express yourself. i love the write-ups from everybody. |

Paddy, after TonySnow took a shot at me thinking I was a left-wing loon, he realized that I'm a real guy and meant what I said and he apologized. I'm not trying to pick fights. I just want to be friends and fit in. I accept your apology, TonySnow, but I have to admit that hurt and it'll take a while to repress the "passive-agressive moron/Billy Joel/snark off" lines. Thank you, MKH, and everyone else for making me feel welcome here. Now, let's get back on topic. :-)

P.S. MCLIJazz is my AIM name. It's a combination of my initials, being from Long Island, and being into jazz. |

We don't pick on '51Jazz around here....ever.
...and that Lord's name in vain thing? Not cool.
OK? |

With Gonzales and Rove gone, and with the Iraq war turning against the dems, they may stop their endless investigations and meaningless war declarations and actually try to legislate!! This could be a disaster. Who's left? Quick we need another scandal!!! |
|

According to Wikipedia, failed AG from early 21st C. |

MCLIJazz, moderate or conservative, I think you'd be surprised how many of us agree with you on Gonzales. :) |
|
Oh Jesus. You're for real. Sorry. Never met a real one before.
Welcome to Town Hall. Have fun commenting. |
|
You're not a LI mod. Republican. You're a passive-agressive moron.
Scram billy joel.
/snark off |
|
Thank you, Randy and Ex-tex. I'll be sticking around after all. :-) Getting back on topic, I don't think Chertoff will end up as the new AG. But I could be wrong. Still, Gonzales and Rumsfeld have one thing in common: they resigned much too late.

...yourself and post yer comment. We don't care that you're a moderate who's just slummin' here with us conservatives. |

You apparently are wanting to, at a minimum, get into political discourse. By the mellowness of your comments, you are probably going to find the snark of some comments here and other blogs, cutting into your mood. Comment with your opinions, take your licks and see what happens.

it seems many are leaving the good ship george bush to flounder in its remaining days as fleet headquarters. Two problems come to mind. The president has shown a lack of leadership and the ability to change positions especially on the illegal problem. The dims lose anopther boogerman to cry crocodile tears of indignation over. We seem to be in a real dilemma. A president who has lost his way and a dim controlled congress bound and determined to destroy his presidentcy. |
|
I'm only a Townhall member and I only comment to MKH's postings because I like her and like her appearances on "The O'Reilly Factor." Otherwise, I don't belong here. I mean, I had to give up going to the BillOReilly.com message boards because everyone was too far right for me. For the Nth time, I'm just a Long Island moderate Republican that would rather discuss the Mets, golf, and contemporary jazz than discuss all the conservative blog/talk radio stuff. And now that I've alienated you all, I'm sure you'd like me to go the way of Alberto Gonzales and leave this blog and Townhall immediately never to come back. Right? |
|
...I'm commenting anyway. It's about time he resigned. I wish he would have done it sooner. And that's all I have to say. Again, I'm too moderate, nice, and not wound up in politics to say anything else. And I'm not saying the rest of you aren't nice. |

Wow the old gang is really disappearing fast--Rummy, Karl Strangelove and now Speedy Gonzalez has left the building!!! The SS Dubya has run aground and has no rudder. Any wagers on who's next? Could Elmer Fudd Cheney be far behind???? Oh and the next appointee will have to face real questions from the DEMOCRATIC controlled Judiciary Committee--no more of Duubya's inept rubberstamp buddies just sliding into office anymore.
It doesn't get much beter than this. |

Gonzales either sold out or had no principles to begin with. He argued in favor of affirmative action and against border agents Ramos and Compean in order to maintain his own high status, which collapsed, anyway. I'm sure he and border agent prosecutor Johnny Sutton are laughing at Bush as the useful idiot who elevated them to their highest levels of incompetence. However, Republicans and conservatives are not laughing at the latest debacle of yet another incapapable Bush appointee going down. Instead, they are applauding. |
|
Bye Bye, 'Berto... Don't let the door hit ya where the good lord split ya!
Nice to see Bush couldn't help but come off like a whining baby during his brief comments. |
|
How about Ramos and Compean? True heroes, willing to give their last full measure of devotion for this nation, daily faced a war on our Southern Border. They languish in federal prison while the alien drug smuggler attempting to bring hundreds of pounds of drugs into this nation, was twice given immunity from prosecution. Justice? Moreover, Lewis Libby, who hazarded nothing, walks a free man.
We will be one step closer to justice when the Gonzo's lieutenant, Johnny Sutton, submits his letter as well.
Sad, sad day? For my money, as a former College Republican, active duty/reserve Marine Officer from '82 - '03, registered Republican for low these many years, it is a great day for America. If the Dems were the catalyst for this, it only serves to show how out of touch the Republican Party hierarchy remains on two key issues:
the sovereignty of this nation and the common welfare of its citizenry.

|
Democrats wish to destroy the Bush administration. The Attorney General is the third casualty -- after Libby and Rove.
Furthermore, Democrats wish to destroy successful conservative minority public servants, as they do not fit the liberal concept of minority citizens. This is the second reason why the Democrats went after the Attorney General.
This is a sad, sad day. |
|
"That would avoid a bruising confirmation fight. Some Democratic senators have vowed now (sic) to confirm a Gonzales successor."
I swear, you can do no right by some of these people. Obstinate obstructionists. Heard about that recent discovery of a vast expanse of space that is completely devoid of any matter - I think that may be where the Dem's are keeping their new ideas... |
|

for Gonzo to be another dear and loyal friend former President Vincente Fox of Mexico?.........Nothing would surprise me with Senor Bush? |

Great commentary on Reliable Sources, August 27. I doubt I'll watch Kid Nation, but I agree it's just summer camp with cameras. And great response: "I think strong happy marriage for the Clintons is a line worthy of the Daily Show." |
