Problems, Solutions & Conservatism
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 2:23 PM
Ezra Klein argues that both major political parties are equipped to solve different types of problems.  As such, the immediate success of a political party is directly linked to the types of problems that need to be solved at a given time:
"It's possible an Obama presidency will be so effective at communicating and conducting its foreign policy that few will ever want to trust Republicans with the military again. But broadly speaking, the set of problems that each party has relative ownership over has remained constant for the better part of a century, and that means there are times when the party seems relevant, and times when it doesn't. My hunch is these will be out years for the Republicans, but not because they're waiting for new ideas. Rather, it'll be because they're waiting for the reemergence of old problems."

This is an interesting theory, inasmuch as it essentially argues that both political parties are needed -- at different times -- to correct the other party (and to solve the full-spectrum of "problems" a nation faces.)  Moreover, Klein seems to graciously concede that conservatives are, in fact, better equipped to solve some problems (though not the ones Americans currently care about).

This also makes me think of Newt Gingrich, who went so far as to name his organization, "American Solutions."  This essay, I think, could have just as easily have been written by Gingrich, which is interesting, in and of itself.

... While there's certainly an element of truth in Klein's essay, I'm not completely sold.  I would argue this has more to do with voter's perceptions and elections than about actual problem solving and leadership.  But it's interesting, nonetheless.

By the way, Andrew Sullivan does a good job explaining how the very premise betray's conservatism:

"For conservatism to copy liberalism by always seeking 'solutions' to problems and convincing 'the right coalitions' of people to look to government for the satisfaction of their needs would be a mistake in my view."

Furthermore
Put Romney on the ticket because it will not make a bit of difference in the out come. Tancredo, Hunter, Thompson, even Ron Paul could have beaten Obama in the fall. But none were at all viable and I would have chosen them in that order except Paul who I would place behind Huckabee the guy I settled on voting for. But I would vote for Paul over Rudi McRomney. In fact none but Rudi could ever get my vote no matter who the other side had up. If talk radio would have stayed out of trying to influence the primary directly and stuck to the facts. Or if Romney would have endorsed Huckabee to give GOP voters a choice in the nomination process we would not have a need for a President Obama as the forgone conclusion. But as it stands most GOP voters don't read the NyTimes Limbaugh they listen to AM radio and you said Huck was out of it before New Hampshire. Ignorant McGOPers (RINOs)

Matt this is THE most ignorant thing
you have ever posted. Not to say you do it a great deal of the time except in the case of ROMNEY!!! If you clowns had not tried to slip his liberal credentials under the mat we wouldn't be in this spot right now. The "NEW" media did everything it could to supress the Huckabee vote calling him out as being worse than McCain. But the idea that Obama is going to be a succesful president based on his skin color is a joke. That is the main reason he will take office and the driving force in his campaign. He is a nothing but McCain is something, which is obviously the man we least want in the white house. Romney was worse because we know how McCain opperates but Romney will say anything to get there. THe reason Obama is unchallenged is because talk radio threw Huckabee under the bus as worse than a long shot, tried to force Romney who is totally UN-electable, and jumped on the Mcbandwagon when Romney conceded his failed campaign.

Sullivan is making a very common mistake
Republicans and conservatives are not interchangeable. That distinction changes everything. I think it says that as problems change, political parties never re-tool until after they lose power. They probably never see themselves as losing until it is too late.

what have the lefties solved ?

I can't think of any recent 'solutions' that the left is responsible for.

All of their pet projects are a mess.
How are welfare and public education working out ?

Their 'solution' for the economy is "people don't have enough money, so let's tax them."

What about all those "wonderful" things a Nancy Pelosi Congress promised to achieve, if only they were given the opportunity to become the majority party in Congress following the 2006 elections ?
