Webb/Allen: No, He's a Racist!
Posted by: Mary Katharine Ham at 9:34 AM

A guy who describes himself as an old friend of Jim Webb's now says he heard Webb use the n-word in his presence. The friend is also a Republican and says he will vote for Allen, and it sounds as if the Allen campaign directed reporters to Cragg (Isn't it funny how the Post makes that very explicit when we're dealing with accusations about a Democrat?). Cragg's coming forward is apparently a response to Webb's denial that he ever used the word.

Yes, I know this is a dumb game, but I feel like once you start with this you can't stop at airing one side. Here's the gist:

Cragg, a former Army sergeant major, described himself as a longtime friend of Webb's who worked for him when he was assistant secretary of defense under President Ronald Reagan. Cragg said he approached the Allen campaign through a friend after hearing Webb's answer to the Times-Dispatch reporter's question about using the N-word.

"The fact is he has. He used it in my presence," Cragg said. "I don't think he's a racist any more than George Allen is. But he's not frank in admitting that he grew up in a culture where that was common and he used it."

Cragg also relates a story Webb allegedly told him about driving down to black neighborhoods and scaring the residents by brandishing a rifle. Since Cragg wasn't there for the event, and it sounds as conveniently, quintessentially racist as the doe-head-in-the-mailbox story, I'm gonna give Webb the same benefit of the doubt I gave Allen.

Also, did you hear that there was a doe-head-in-the-mailbox story in North Carolina, where Ken Shelton lives, just a couple months before he made the allegations about Allen pulling the same stunt? I don't want to get all "Loose Change" on you, but it's interesting. For those of you who are not from the South, Severed Doe Head Mailbox Placement is not a common pastime.

And, for the record, I think it's altogether possible-- even probable-- that both men used the n-word in the 70s, as an epithet, and that neither one is racist now. I know it sounds crazy, but we could judge them on their conduct since their stupid college days. In both cases, it largely commends them.

Also, I hadn't noticed before, but that 5-point poll lead I mentioned for Allen is a two-point uptick for him in the last two weeks. Is that evidence of the backfiring I mentioned earlier today? Judging from my own attitudes, I was down on Allen as a candidate after he sorta flubbed the Macaca thing, but now I'm feeling kind of energized to help the guy out, since this has devolved into such a stupid, racist witch-hunt. Do others feel the way I do?

MSM Sniping at the Front Runner
As a long time Virginian (VA Tech grad), I've been rooting for Allen in '08. I think he's a far more credible candidate than Guliani, whose social outlook isn't that far from Hillary's. I've been impressed with Romney. He's got all the right stuff, but -- like it or not -- this country is not ready for a Mormon president. Evangelicals will not get on board in sufficient numbers to make that work.

Allen is the front runner in '08 and he's the deciding factor in the Dems chances of taking the Senate. That's why he's taking these trumped up hits. Next week's WaPo headline: I saw Allen Steal a Slurpee in 7th Grade!

indifferent to Allen
Allen isn't a racist, if anything, he's a political opportunist. He and other Republicans seemed hel-bent on ousting Trent Lott as Majority Leader after Lott made his seriously misconstrued (if ill-advised) statements at the Thurmond event. I don't think Allen's motives were essentially anti-racist, but it should've boosted his standing in this regard. The media likes to forget his role in the Senate coup de etat, in which he was a major mover and shaker.

As a Virginian by birth (which I like to remind Allen's supporters that he definitely is not), I'm a little perturbed by Allen's pandering to minority groups. Regardless, he is the lesser of two evils, and he is right on security issues, and he will be receiving my vote.

Same reaction
I have had the same reaction as you, when the Macacca thing happened I was disgusted with Allen, not because I consider the word racist, but just stupid. He could have called him a moron and I would have the same reaction. It was just childish to call him any name like that. But with all the mudslinging since, I am far more sympathetic to Allen. The 'are you a Jew' question was sickening, and indefensable. And now this 'n' word story is just more of the same old democrat playbook, Republican = racist etc. I'm really sick to death of seeing everyone who does not toe the Democrat line being labeled a racist/homophobe/etc. I don't believe Allen is racist, and I don't see how it matters even if he did use the N word 30 years ago. Which of us has not said something we shouldn't, or wish we didn't, sometime in our lives? It is silly. If Allen is racist, it would seem that it would be obvious from his time in public service. Lets discuss the issues?

EMBARRASSMENT
I am in agreement with you Mary K. This race has turned into an embarrassment to the Commonwealth. Personally, as I stated in a previous comment, I do not believe that Allen is a bigot. He and his campaign haven't handled things well since Macacagate started in my opinion. He will still get my vote based on his prior record in office and because I do not agree with Jim Webb regarding Iraq. For those out there not from Virginia, we elected Doug Wilder Governor about 18 years ago without incident, so Virginia isn't the racially charged hotbed of bigotry it may appear to be from this campaign.

Allen/Webb
The Virginia Senate race has so far been largely devoid of substance. George Allen has been a Congressman, Governor, and Senator. We know where he stands. He's a true conservative. Web has largely run a stealth campaign. Anybody know what his positions are on taxes, treatment of captured prisoners, gay rights, missile defense, immigration, etc. etc.?
