Rudy's Reception
Posted by: Mary Katharine Ham at 2:50 PM

There was a glitch in the Internet service here for a bit, so sorry for the lateness...

McCain-hating and Romney-bashing have been pretty much equal-opportunity pastimes around CPAC this year. I've been surprised how much flak Romey has gotten, in fact, although his support is much higher than McCain's among conference-goers by the old sticker count.

Rudy, on the other hand, has gotten mostly a free pass. And, today, his speech was filled to capacity with folks waiting in the hallway to get in. There were also dense crowds around all the TVs in the exhibit halls. The charm offensive is strong, indeed. People just love listening to him.

I took some video of conservatives quite mesmerized by the Mayor, so I'm working on getting that up. They were doing crowd control outside the hall in which he was speaking. Many of those folks crowding the hall are pro-life, social conservatives who just can't resist him, despite the policy differences. I don't think Rudy will remain unattacked, as he was this week, but the feel-good factor is big for him, no matter what kind of conservative he's talking to.

Today, he talked about leadership, security, toughness, and Reagan to a crowd who's looking for a leader in the image of Reagan in a time that needs security. It was a good pitch, and there were more people listening than have listened to anything at CPAC this week.

We'll see what the Romney turn-out looks like next.

Big Tent Party?
Giuliani should be the presumptive front runner (and in my opinion the nominee) because he is a leader. Sure he isn't a cookie cutter Conservative but so what? He should be fine with judges (no one's a lock) and he'll be resolute with the war. I'd rather have a stand-up guy I agree with 80% of the time as opposed to a DC addict that says what has to be said to get the nomination.

I'm still holding out hope for Condi in 08 though!!!

HUNTER 2008
Republican primary voters can nominate a real conservative if they don't act like sheep and get herded into a northeast liberal. Give Americans a chance to vote for someone who will secure the border and watch turnout go up. Americans want their government to fulfill its most basic responsibilty.

The primary responsibility of the U.S. government is to protect the territorial integrity and people of this country. They have completely abdicated this responsibility. Both parties have been complicit in this. We are being told it is not possible to control our borders, enforce our laws, and thereby control our destiny as a nation. Hogwash. We are being sold out by corporations intent on importing workers for jobs that can't be exported with the taxpayers paying the true costs, financial and human. If we act like sheep and don't stop the inundation across our borders, we will lose our country without a bleat. ch turnout go up. Americans want their government to fulfill its most basic responsiblity.

Reception of candidates
Look, I know us conservs want a REAL CONSERVATIVE and mumble about Hunter or Tancredo or Paul or some sort of unknown and third tier person, but let's face it, we also want a leader and winner. McCain has been rejected just as he has announced! Unless Newt enters the race, the race is between Mitt and Rudy G. Now so far, Rudy G has the numbers. He seems to have passed the CPAC test as well as has Mitt. I can remember when Alan Keyes and other were received with wows by us righties. But, in reality, we knew that he and other guys could not win the GENERAL election. We knew also, that now with on the ground help, money, only Mitt and Rudy G are still standing. I can vote for either. Rudy would be my vote first because of the ongoing generational war against Islamofascism. Newt would be a nice VP choice or even Hunter. And can you imagine if Rudy would choose Rick Santorum for his first SCOTUS choice? I can.
