David Brooks Bashes House Republicans
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 10:19 AM

I'm thinking of starting a blog exclusively dedicated to refuting the writings of conservative New York Times columnist David Brooks.  After all, I'm essentially guaranteed at least one blog post every time he writes a piece.

His column today is a prime example of why he drives conservatives crazy.  Regarding the House Republicans who -- on principle -- voted "no" on the bailout yesterday, he writes,

"House Republicans led the way and will get most of the blame.  It has been interesting to watch them on their single-minded mission to destroy the Republican Party. Not long ago, they led an anti-immigration crusade that drove away Hispanic support. Then, too, they listened to the loudest and angriest voices in their party, oblivious to the complicated anxieties that lurk in most American minds."

It's one thing to disagree with their vote, but quite another to question their motives and accuse them of being on a mission to destroy the GOP

Speaking of House Republicans, Brooks goes on to add,

"Now they have once again confused talk radio with reality. If this economy slides, they will go down in history as the Smoot-Hawleys of the 21st century.

Of course, this is a ridiculous analogy.  By signing Smoot-Hawley, President Herbert Hoover dramatically increased tariff rates.  This protectionism -- along with tax hikes -- helped prolong The Great Depression.  It was Republican protectionism and liberalism -- not free market conservatism -- that prolonged the crisis.

The House Republicans who opposed the bailout on principle are Free Marketers who would be the first to oppose a bill such as Smoot-Hawley -- based on philosophical reasons.  Comparing the House Republicans to Smoot-Hawley is especially insulting -- especially coming from someone who ought to know better.

You are Not Alone Matt
I cringe while reading some of his articles and listening to him on PBS.

Go for it. There are many people who have enjoyed a love-hate relationship with David Brooks and conserve-lite crowd. There would be many who would enjoy reading responses to such a visible and influential semi-conservative like Brooks.

Sometimes he can sound just as condescending as the liberal columnists, but at least they have an excuse.

There is much that Brooks can learn from Bill Kristol and Charles Krauthammer and hopefully Matt Lewis.

Bush Destroyed The GOP
The House GOP are trying to return it to it's principles. Brooks has never been a conservative, he's the NYT version of a conservative.

David Brooks a Conservative?
Only in Washington is it wrong to put principal over expediency. David Brooks must do this in his professional career as well. He works for a the gray old rag the New York Times and he is also on PBS's Newshour. You must be a fake conservative in order to be accepted in those circles. I've read some of his stuff and watched him on C-span. While he is interesting to listen to, Conservatives cannot take his opinions seriously. This is just another example of why we can't him seriously.

So, I take it you give the 40% of house dems. who voted no a pass? Why? You do know the dems. chould have passed the bailout without rep. support right? I'll wait for your reply!

wait a minute
whether it was because of principle or the stated reason that pelosi had offended them, the house republicans cost americans 1 trillion dollars yesterday.

americans, especially seniors who lost some of their life savings will not forget who did this.

It already happened, Eddie, and they didn't need your permission to do it.

Everyone sounds like a fool.

No one knows what is needed in this crisis(?). No one knows what the future holds. They are all bleating their opinions without any facts to back them up.

Eleven days ago this was labeled a crisis that if not resolved immediately would bring down the economy. Some crisis. Since when do the morons define a crisis as something that can be addressed in a few weeks. Maybe legislation was urgent, but hardly a crisis.

The very fact that Paulson and the Dems tried the "bum's rush" is reason enough to suspect their motives.

Anyone reading the bill can see that it is designed to transfer American taxpayer's money to Paulson's buddies who are in danger of losing their shirts.

If their is such a liquidity crisis, why are credit card companies trying to give me zero interest unsecured loans?

The Fed
is a private industry run by banks. They DO NOT have to answer to our government.

They just flexed their muscle and showed the American people who the real masters are.

Enjoy your 60 cent dollar bills this week, friends.

Did you people actually think
that the bankers and the feds were going to take "no" for an answer?

What made you think that they needed Congress' approval in the first place?

I agree...
with everything David Brooks said. I think House Republicans are choosing ideology over practicality. They seem to be relishing in marching my party over a cliff. Frankly, it disgusts me. The bill we now will end up with is quite possibly going to be much worse (if Pelosi moves the bill to the left to get more Democrats). How is that accomplishing anything? This seems to be the ultimate example of cutting off your nose to spite your face.
