Romney After Tsunami Tuesday?
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 9:57 AM

There's no doubt that Mitt Romney's large personal fortune -- combined with the fact that some conservatives will never embrace John McCain -- means that Mitt Romney could afford to stay in the race long after Tsunami Tuesday.

But two questions come to mind ...

1.  Would this shrewd business man, who has already spent well-over 20 million dollars of his own money, continue spending money on what could be a losing cause?  Smart businessmen don't throw away money.

2.  Would Mitt Romney want to be blamed for a Republican loss in the General Election.  Fair or not, if he prolongs the race too long, that's what some people would say ...

Ronald Reagan went all the way to the Convention in '76, and was rewarded with the nomination in '80.  That could happen for Mitt, too.  Or, he could be more like Ted Kennedy -- who was blamed for costing Jimmy Carter the election that same year ...

Let the healing begin!
Jennifer Rubin stole my seven stages of McCain! (she may never have seen it) but that is okay--that just shows her good taste and sound judgment:

John, I have no doubt McCain will never win the talk show primary, but he has won New Hampshire, South Carolina and Florida. Unless something very odd occurs (even more odd than what we’ve seen so far) he will be the nominee. Yes, first there is denial, then anger, next bargaining and depression but finally, acceptance. http://www.commentarymagazine.com/blogs/index.php/rubin/21 52

Here's my version:

Shock or Disbelief: How could this be, his campaign was DEAD last summer?

Denial: McCain cannot win, Mitt Romney is the stronger candidate. American want to round up all Mexicans and put them in concentration camps. He is against waterboarding, so he is not qualified to be a Republican.

Anger: I am sitting out this election or voting for Hillary! Just watch me do it!

Guilt: How did we ever let this happen? What did I do to allow the GOP to sink so low?

Depression: Pass me the liquor. I feel sick.

Bargaining: McCain better make things right with the base, he has to get approval from Rush, Hannity and then agree to have Fred Thompson as his running mate to keep him in line (actually even I hope for that!).

Acceptance and Hope: Well, it is better to win the general than to face President Hillary in the White House for possibly two terms. GO MCCAIN!

I Have Seen A Vision - In My Vision
I see a mean little troll who will lead a once proud institution named Reaganism into oblivion. I bid the new moderate left leaning Republican Party, adieu.

As I say my goodbye’s to you the new moderate Republican Party, I suggest that you say hello to your future. Say hello to the new language of your future, Spanish. Say hello to open borders and amnesty for law breakers. Say hello to tax payer funded health care. Say hello to US taxpayer’s funding of the cost’s related to fighting a war against an imaginary foe by the name of “Global Warming”. Say hello to a flood of mentally ill Jihadist’s crossing our open borders and filling our land with death and destruction. Say hello to massive tax increases. Say hello to the end of the global fight for freedom and liberty. Say hello to the free and open murder of tiny helpless babies.

You asked for it you got it! Say hello to President Barrack Hussein Obama the republican’s choice in 2008.

Acceptance and Hope:
Well, it is better to win the general than to face President Hillary in the White House for possibly two terms. GO MCCAIN!

How about this for Acceptance: We lived through Jimmy Carter and got Reagan. We lived through two terms of Bill Clinton and got George W Bush, who is not perfect but makes McCain look every bit the liberal he is. Though the country will have hard times, we will survive. It will be a great, but hard, teaching moment for the conservative movement. I am willing to accept that.

FOOT SOLDIER'S a REPUBLICAN TRAITOR
Joe, Look @ Romneys voting record in Massachusettes...he's a CONSERVATIVE!
Mitt is the only true conservative... he's the man. His optimistic goals for our country's future is a breath of fresh air! His economic plan is outstanding & he will fight the Jihadists! He's the complete package!

Advesories cut him down for petty reasons ie...his Mormon faith, good looks, $.

There are real reasons to go against McCain...McCain (FOOT SOLDIER for Reagan...HAHAHA) cannot win on HIS record. He's the most LIBERAL Republican on the ballot...(he has aligned himself with too many liberal issues ie...Gang of 14, remember McCain/Feingold?, defected with Ted Kennedy on education, plus disapproved of Bush's tax cuts, & weak on immigration.)

He's too bombastic to be President. He SUCKER PUNCHED Romney yesterday w/ his DECEITFUL accusations about timelines & robo- calling...he's a lib all the way, even running a Clintonesque campaign.

The FOOT SOLDIER'S jealousy of Romney is crystal clear. Is it because Romney's a Mormon or is it because Romney's been successful, maybe because Romney's exposed his failures & makes him accountable, or a combo of all??

EVERYONE who CORRELATES MITT & $ IS 100% JEALOUS!
True conservative Republicans consider the candidates record & goals for our country's future...not petty issues like good looks & $...One should not take anyone w/ these views seriously, but should realize that those w/ these views are lacking a few brain cells!

McCain is an UNTRUSTWORTHY UNRELIABLE "FOOT SOLDIER" REPUBLICAN TRAITOR who would disappoint Ronald Reagan with his liberal record and liberal goals for our country. He's a pseudo-Republican...as the old saying goes "a wolf hiding in sheeps clothing"...McCain's "a liberal hiding in the conservative party"

You Gotta Vote

Please do NOT stay home. You must vote. You do not have to vote for Hillybama or McAmnesty. There are always other parties and people on the ballot. You could write in Joe Oliva. The important votes are for House and Senate seats. Conservatives MUST win seats in the House. The House is where things get done. It was the passage of H.R. 4437 in Dec.05 that sparked the illegal alien protest marches and moved this issue to the front burner. It was the Senate that tried to jam amnesty down our throats. The D's that won seats in '06 were conservatives running on enforcement platforms. One of them, Heath Shuler D-NC, introduced the SAVE Act. Call, e-mail, or write your Congressman and urge support of this legislation. Enforcement is what Americans want, not amnesty.

I don't think Hillary is stupid enough to step in front of this bus. McCain is.

The Cleansing of Conservatism
If McCain finally gets nominated by the Republican party, it will make clear that the Party is NOT Conservative in nature, but a humbling reflection of the majority of our society. You can argue that he can beat Hillary in the generals and that is good enough to nominate him. But in doing so, the electors are doing one of two things: they are betraying their core beliefs or are simply not Conservatives. It's time to refocus the party's mission. And if McCain ultimately gets the nod, then many of us true Conservative-minded Republicans will elect a Democrat Liberal....it took Carter to find Reagan. Let's hope history repeats itself.
AmericanWoman writes: Wednesday, January, 30, 2008 10:36 AM
Who are they?
We really don't care what "they" say. Huckabee blamed Thompson for his loss in SC, but considering the number of Thompson supporters now backing Romney, that shoots that idea.

The elderly and military retirees (who don't figure as prominently in other states and don't have to worry about losing jobs) put McCain over the top in SC and FL and he was robocalling their homes with all kinds of lies and scare tactics about Romney. Combine that with the religious bigots stuffing mailboxes for Huckabee and calling Romney *Islamic* and I figured this would happen. McCain didn't win anywhere else, except NH where Dems voted for him, and did very poorly in some other states.

We also haven't seen whether the absentee ballots have been counted in FL, which the news said favored Romney and counted for one third of the total. Would they call the election without counting them in or has the final tally been presented? Can't find that info. Just saying, it would be nice to know how it really came out in the end, after all is said and done.

I think Mccain is too old an I would only vote for him if it is a Huckabee/Mccain ticket.

Governor Huckabee has done the most with the least amount to work with. People realized just how much he relates to the every day American trying to struggle to stay afloat. Thats why his win was so big in Iowa. He has finished 2nd in most States. Huckabee is currently number 2 nationwide, and Huckabee is expected to sweep the south!

If the press and the Country Club wing of the party get their way and McCain is the nominee I will vote for the Democrat, even if it is Hillary Clinton. Four years of Clinton II or Barak O'Carter will be far less damaging than a left leaning sellout McCain administration. As president and with the help of media he will be able to lean on congressional repuplicans and pass all kinds of socialism and pack the courts with more Anthony Kennedys. He will nullify all the gains that have been made in the judicial system over the last twenty-five years.

If a Democrat is in office the Republicans will be better motivated to oppose the socialist power grabs.

Mitt is plowing his own field
and on the first plowing, the rocks surface! The others are working in well-plowed fields and are well known to the electorate; Mitt isn't.

Give Mitt a little time. He is viewed with suspicion as an outsider and definitely not regarded as a national hero. Think of the automatic public affection towards John and Rudy. Some resent his contrast ads against heroes.

Mitt is bold and isn't bound by the normal rules of trading political favors after years of mpolitical networking!

He is bound by a sense of duty to use his experience and skills to change Washington. Trouble is Washington resents an outsider who wants to change her and one who dares to speak out against her favorites!

His grassroots support is growing as people dissect the mores and platforms of the remaining candidates.

McCain's record doesn't resonate with all. He has enemies among his peers and in his home state. He has been double minded in his principles and voting. He has poor health and is too old for the position he seeks. He appears to have post traumatic stress issues as demonstrated by his temper and foul language. Do we want a president who has suffered so much as a POW that he is hindered emotionally?

Mitt's candidacy has unleashed latent resentment towards his faith. Some of this resentment is hostile; some is misinformation and fear. He gave his speech on faith in America and made his faith positions clear in his personal life as to who he is as a person. He believes in God and in the importance of freedom, traditional marriage, and the protection of children. He does not pander his personal beliefs not inflict them on others.

It is curious that there is resentment towards Mitt because he's a very successful, self-made business man. Few know the details of his 20 years of service to people of the poor and middle classes in his unpaid church service and in charitable organizations.

Unlike you I do not look at McCain winning Florida as Liberals defeating the Conservatives. I look at it as Republicans picking the best canidate available. McCain is far from perfect, but he can be influenced to do the right thing and is hands down better than Hillary or Obama. McCain has been good on fiscal spending control his whole career. McCain is great on defense. If he agrees to no immigration reform his first term until the border is sealed and is watched carefully (especially on judicial appointments) you may find him doing better on conservative issues than George W. Bush. McCain is no Reagan, but neither is Romney (did you catch Mitt attacking McCain over his vote against expanding Medicare entitlements? I thought conservatives opposed expanding entitlements?). Huckabee is a proven social conservative
Romney the "johnny-come-lately" to the conservative cause is the one who should withdraw and endorse Huckabee. The social conservatives might have a chance of derailing McCain is Romney does this. Still, it will be a slim chance. Huckabee is not withdrawing because he is the proven social conservative. It does not make sense for the proven social conservative so that the "johnny-come-lately", WHOSE COMMITMENT IS UNPROVEN, can dilute social conservatives' commitment to their issues.

McCain and Huckabee have figured out correctly that all they have to do is keep heaping lies on Romney, force him to defend himself, and they'll get free air time from the media airheads to compensate for their lack of funds.

Huckabee doesn't care about conservatives, Huckabee cares about McCain giving him the VP nod, but he has little to no support outside a certain percentage of evangelicals and even they aren't united behind him. Many of those who are seem to be having second thoughts, as evidenced by his drop in FL.

I will never vote for McCain. If we are
going to have a liberal Democrat in the White House, it should be the one with the (D) next to his name.

The great thing about elections is that the voters, collectively, always get exactly what they deserve. If they vote for the "D" student, they get a guy without much intellectual capacity and the consequences that follow. If they vote for a guy the liberal media loves, they get a guy who represents the liberal media. If they vote for a guy who married his money and has never had a non-government job, they get a guy who likes bigger government and doesn't understand the economy. If they vote for a guy who is for open borders, they will get open borders.

But in the end, they will get what they voted for. I can live with that. But I won't put up with folks who vote for those things and then gripe about getting them.

If you vote for McCain, for any reason, don't gripe if you get more of -
McCain - Kennedy
McCain - Lieberman
McCain - Feingold
McCain - Edwards

When I heard McCain's Hispanic Outreach guy was none other than Smiling Juan Hernandez, I knew John McCain has heard nothing we have had to say.

Smiling Juan Hernadez
We know who he is, we know his loyalties are to Mexico, we know he wants to erase our borders and immigration laws.

JOHN MCCAIN, YOU NEED A NEW HEARING AID

Smiling Juan Hernandez
In case you don't know him, he used to work for the Mexican govt., lately he has been shilling for "rights" for illegal aliens in this country. He has said he wants Mexicans to remain Mexicans even if they are living here. His loyalties are to Mexico, not U.S.

Questions for illegal alien apologists like John McCain:

Why does The National Council of the Race (la raza in spanish) and the Chamber of Commerce get to negotiate a "Comprehensive Shafting of The American Citizens" behind closed doors? Since when does an organization representing foreign nationals breaking our laws get to rewrite our immigration laws to suit the lawbreakers? Isn't this akin to allowing NAMBLA to rewrite our laws regarding child predators? Or allowing organized crime syndicates to rewrite racketeering, gambling, prostitution, and extortion laws?

We The People are being told by our representatives that we should sit down and shut up while they invite in the entire world. We The People should get some say in this matter. Another amnesty will set off a stampede like we have never seen before. There is not much time to save our country. All the money and power are on the side of shoving this amnesty down our throats. The RNC wants an amnesty candidate, don't vote for one.

McCain AWOL From Reagan Revolution
Tonight McCain and Romney will duke it out in California. Mitt is against the ropes and most are probably counting his campaign for dead. I hope that Mitt’s cause is not lost but I am not naive enough to say that isn’t a distinct possibility at the moment.

Mitt needs to make the case to America tonight. He NEEDS to deliver body blows to McCain and rally conservatives. Here is one idea that he absolutely must drive home.

McCain often paints himself as a ‘footsoldier in the Reagan Revolution.’ Romney should say something like this:

“Senator McCain, we all honor and respect your military service and know you were are a patriot and were an honorable soldier. You say you were a foot soldier in the Reagan Revolution. That may have been the case but sir, you are AWOL from the Reagan Revolution. You abandoned the Reagan Revolution a long time ago when you supported…” Then comes the list of McCain’s betrayals of conservative ideals.

According to exit polls in almost every primary to date, Romney has won conservatives. He NEEDS to point out that McCain is no conservative.

Geraghty the Indispensable
A reader asks why McCain is called "not conservative" by Rush, folks in the Corner, etc.

McCain's conservative rating from the American Conservative Union in 2006 was 65 (bleh) but his lifetime record is 82.3 at the end of that year. (I don't see any updated numbers that include the 2007 votes.)

Rick Santorum has a lifetime rating 88.1, this reader notes. The ratings are determined by how often a lawmaker votes the conservative position on a key vote.

(Other interesting lifetime ratings.... That squish Lindsey Graham? 90.6 lifetime rating. John Sununu of New Hampshire? 93.2. Trent Lott? 92.4. Sam Brownback? 94.0. Hillary Clinton? 6.2. Barack Obama? 8.0.)

But year after year, there's been a lot of pro-life votes, a lot of defense spending bills, welfare reform efforts, the Republican Revolution of the mid-1990s, voting to impeach Clinton on both counts, Supreme Court justices, etc.

As discussion of Republican primary choices has gotten more heated, I think the terms "liberal", "not conservative" and "not as conservative as I would like" have become synonyms, and that shouldn't be the case.

Decision
Conservatives have to make a decision. Do they want to support open borders, campaign finance reform, gay marriage (no marriage amendment), global warming, (McCain Lieberman), and run on the promise of more wars with a candidate who has openly said he does not understand the economy?

Or are they willing to fight for the future of the party and conservative movement? Romney is not the perfect candidate but he is better than McCain on almost every issue.

Romney will stay in as long as Conservatives support him with money and votes. We will have a good understanding of how winable this fight is when we see which states Romney contests by running ads.

As far as fragmenting the party, McCain will lose if he gets the nomination. He can never repair the riff between him and the anti immigration forces. Further, he will run on Iraq and run away from immigration. We lose our only cross over issue.

McCain is more of the same on Iraq and that is a loser. McCain is the problem and the reason Washington is broken.

The decision is not necessarily Romney's if he loses he can go make more money.

However, he is likely to fund his own think tank and become the new leader of the conservative movement and start preparing for 2012.

The Rep party will have to reconstruct itself after McCain destroys it or the conservative movement will go it's own way. It will support those candidates who stand up for conservative principles. It will fight McCain and the Dems on liberal policies (like it did with immigration). It will become a defacto 3rd party without a party label.

Truth is, Jimmy Carter lost to Reagan because he was an awful president.
And the REASON he was challenged by Ted Kennedy in the first place was because he was...an awful president.

Dam-Mitt!
Social conservatives know better than to be duped by a pandering, flip-flopper of your kind, Mr. Romney. McCain might claim authenticity as a conservative, but Huckabee can easily claim authenticity and consistency over both McCain and Romney on matters of life and family. Unlike McCain and Romney, Mike Huckabee is truly outside the Washington-Wall Street Establishment, and is the charismatic leader who has produced positive change in Arkansas and can bring needed change to the nation's Capitol.

If voters are so fearful of John McCain, maybe they should be asking whether a vote for Mitt Romney is indeed a vote for McCain. After all, it was voters for Fred Thompson and Romney that narrowly thwarted a Huckabee win in South Carolina two weeks ago which gave McCain the momentum to win Florida.

Mitt won't cost McCain the Presidency
Mitt's put his money and energy into the early states, where he lost. McCain was outspent and trashed in negative ads, and his poll numbers went up. Now I'm supposed to believe a much weaker Romney is going to torpedo McCain?

I'm supporting McCain, but I also support competition. A vigorous competition makes for a stronger general election candidate. So far, Mitt's negative tactics have only served to hurt Mitt himself. As long as Mitt supports McCain in the end, which he will, I don't see any harm in a spirited competition.

Heck, I'd even submit that Romney may end up HELPING McCain by sticking around. A McCain-Romney ticket might be very tough to beat.

Thank you
1. Thank you for your interest in Mitt Romney's finances, I'm sure he'd be touched by your concern.

2. If the Republican Party runs a Democrat candidate it DESERVES TO LOSE.

McCain will cost McCain the Presidency. Amnesty will cost him the election.

There are millions of us who usually vote GOP who WILL NOT vote for McCain, for a variety of reasons. For me it's the amnesty issue. Whatever the issue is, it is a bright line we will not cross. No amount of Hillaryscare, intimidation, name-calling or cajoling will get us to vote for McCain. He's in the wrong party. He is a liberal. I don't vote for liberals. When he loses, don't blame us, we tried to warn you. Flipping off half your voters is not a winning strategy.

Joe, Joe, Joe
We lived through Jimmy Carter and got Reagan. We lived through two terms of Bill Clinton and got George W Bush, who is not perfect but makes McCain look every bit the liberal he is. Though the country will have hard times, we will survive. It will be a great, but hard, teaching moment for the conservative movement. I am willing to accept that.

Again, the lesser of two "evils" is still too "evil" to support. He is NOT the best candidate to represent the GOP unless the GOP is ready to cede 1/3 of it's conservative base.

I will continue to vote for conservatives who run for congress even if they are Republicans.

NO TO MCCAIN
1- Embelishing facts is poor taste. Romney has donated 16 mill to his camp. ANd i respect a man willing to put his money where his mouth is. How can he ask (we) supporters to give while he has millions in the bank? He is a good man and earned his money honestly . I am sick of people acting like he is a silver spoon baby- he wasnt. I am sick of people acting like working hard and getting wealth is a bad thing. That is core America.

2- Romney can not be blammed for a GOP loss. If Romney bows out to Mc.....Hill or Obama are sure to win anyway. If Romney stays in he might get the nod & he actually does have a chance against Hill or Obama. He actually has the money to win. He has raised more than any candidate & that excludes his own money!

GO MITT & DONT LISTEN TO IGNORANT PUNDITS TRYING TO SHOVE MC DOWN OUR THROATS!

No McCain for this Conservative
Sorry..But McCain at 72 against a young Obama is a no brainer. Obama will crush the older liberal McCain. I could care less what McCain supporters say: He is a joke, a fraud, and a disgrace. He is a blantant liberal...I will stay home and I proudly say that than vote for McCain. I love seeing all these McCain supporters trying to tell Romney to quit...why? So the Republican party can drift further to the Democrats and liberalism. I say not. McCain is NO CONSERVATIVE and is a joke on the economy, taxes and ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION. If he is the GOP nominee I WILL NOT VOTE FOR HIM and I SAY THAT PROUDLY. The fact is even if 20-30 percent of the true conservatives stay home McCain will never win. And we will not support McCain. I could care less if Obama or Hillary win. I would rather have 4 years of awful and get a Ronald Reagann type than 4 or 8 years of McCain Republicanism that will destroy the party. Sorry but many I work with and talk to all said the same thing today. No vote for a liberal like McCain. Sorry McCain supporters you will find out in November. Some True Conservatives will support McCain but millions more will not and he will not win without us. Sorry...
