Rob Bluey's Misguided Attack on Dean Barnett
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 8:40 AM

My good friend Rob Bluey has gone after Dean Barnett over at RedState. While I understand Rob's point of view, I'd like to take a moment just to point out why I think he is making too much of this ...

Rob specifically notes that, "After days of making no mention of RedState's effort to oust embattled Rep. Ken Calvert..." yada, yada, yada. The implication is that Townhall should have been all over the RedState vs. Calvert story (because, obviously, if RedState does something, it's huge news!). While we frequently link to other blogs, etc., I don't think there's any obligation for one conservative blog to write about another. Second, while Dean disagreed with RedState's new direction, I believe he did so in a cordial way. The last time I checked, disagreement was allowed.

It should also be noted that other RedState bloggers have, themselves, questioned RedState's new direction. Streiff, for example, recently posted a blog with the title: "Are We Becoming Them?" So it's not as if Dean's observation is from out in left field. Clearly, RedState is repositioning itself as a blog that focuses more on activism and less on commentary. Essentially, they are taking a page from the DailyKos. It's a business decision, and I believe that it will ultimately help the movement.

Rob has always had a bias toward using blogs for activism. My only argument would be that I think we all bring different things to the conservative movement -- and that the movement is big enough for different kinds of bloggers.  In terms of the hypocrisy argument, it is entirely possible that, in the past, Dean felt it was appropriate to send a message to the NRSC.  He may now feel (I'm only guessing here) that it is entirely another thing to launch a series of attacks on GOP Legislators.  Whether or not he's right or wrong on that is not the point ...

There is a lot of distance between, say Jerry Falwell to George Will, yet both have helped advance the conservative movement.  There's a lot of distance between William F. Buckley and Pat Robertson, yet both have played their part in the movement.  Should Robertson criticize Buckley for "being too much of an academic?"  Of course not!  We need intellectuals and activists, alike.  If the movement is big enough for Falwell, Will, Robertson, and Bucklye -- then certainly the blogosphere has room for Rob Bluey and Dean Barnett.

For four years, I ran the Leadership Institute's Grassroots Activist School.  I've also managed races ranging from School Board to U.S. Congress, and worked for a Grassroots Lobbying firm.  So don't get me wrong -- I believe in activism.  But I'm also a fusionist.  I think we need to do both activism and punditry.

We need pundits, opinion leaders, and, yes, activists. The movement benefits when we have diversity.

A Balance
I believe there is room for both- kind of like the Limbaugh model.

I believe an effective blog should have a balance of talking points, analysis, constructive criticism and humor.

I try to put out as much original analysis as possible, links to stories that advance our philosophy or provide ammunition against the Left, valid criticism of our own, and just the right amount of humor and/or sarcasm when needed.

I also believe it is important to counter local liberal bloggers so they can't control the story and provide an alternative analysis.

is Matt Lewis misrepresenting blogger ?

Matt Lewis has a disappointing habit of overstatement and misrepresentation, so this issue doesn't come as a surprise to me.

Kudos to Streiff for standing up for himself.

But the point is,...
There's activism and there's activism.

One kind of activism says, "Tell your congressman to read and become knowledgable on the war so that they can do a better job."

Another kind of activism says, "We need to shoot somebody as an example to the rest."

You decide.

Pundits and activists
I recognize Matt's point that some bloggers only want to be pundits. That's fine. My frustration with Dean Barnett is that he's sending the wrong message about activism. Even if Barnett doesn't want to be an activist, he shouldn't cast a negative light on those who do, especially when we share the common goal of pressuring Republicans to clean up their act.

just not true
I went to school in southern Virginia so I know I don't use big words or complicated sentences. Giving the benefit of the doubt, I can only conclude from your initial reference to my post that you didn't bother to read it and simply skimmed the titles of recent posts for something to glom onto. And now, you simply lack the ability to admit you've been nailed.

Matt, my post had zip, zero, nada to do with the direction of RedState. It had everything to do with conservative blogs jumping on stories and beginning weave conspiracy theories and crying censorship without examining the facts.

If you won't show me the courtesy of reading my posts before using them as an example, at least show me the courtesy of not telling me what my posts are about.

Matt...read closer
In fairness, Matt - there's no real reasonable way to read Streiff's post as wondering about RedState specifically - and even the strained reading that makes it so isn't connected to the issue you're writing about here.

To review:

"It should also be noted that other RedState bloggers have, themselves, questioned RedState's new direction. Streiff, for example, recently posted a blog with the title: "Are We Becoming Them?" So it's not as if Dean's observation is from out in left field. "

Your first paragraph is about Calvert and Barnett. Then, you reference Streiff's post about military blogging issues (an unrelated one), and then remark that Dean's observation is at least somewhat germane, using Streiff's post to justify that. (and then go on to talk about activism, which Streiff had nothing to say about in that post) Whether your sentence is grammatically correct, the use of the bookends does not make it an accurate representation, and it's unfair to Streiff.

I gaurantee you can find folks that disagree with the RS vs. Calvert thing. (one typing here, actually) But in all, this ought not be a fight. If it is, it's a dumb one - on all sides.

Your post
was not specifically about the Calvert issue. I never said it was. However, your post was, in fact, asking the question about the direction RedState is headed. That is precisely how I represented it.

misrepresentation
In my posting on RedState, "Are We Coming Them?" I did not disagree with the direction of activism, to the contrary I support the movement of RedState in that direction and have the emails to document it.

Had Matt bothered to read the lede of the story he would have seen I was referring specifically and explicitly to two instances in which conservative leaning blogs jumped on a story without bothering to attempt to understand the story.
