Those Redneck, Racist Pennsylvanians
Posted by: Carol Platt Liebau at 10:04 PM
Just a week after calling western Pennsylvanians "racist," John Murtha is at it again.  This time he called western Pennsylvanians "rednecks."

Don't forget these Pennsylvanians are the ones Barack was referring to when he made this famous statement:

You go into some of these small towns in Pennsylvania, and like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing's replaced them. . . . So it's not surprising then that they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.  (emphasis added).

So all those good, hardworking people Pennsylvania must be asking themselves: Why on earth would I support a party that thinks I'm nothing more than a racist redneck (too ignorant to understand my own economic interests), who's "cling[ing]" to guns and religion because that's all I've got?

Take My Word For It.
Carol,

I live in West Virginia and make it over to PA from time to time. Take my for for it, western PA is filled with rednecks. It's a lot like around here. If you came here, you'd feel like an extra in a remake of Deliverance.

"Stupider is not a proper english word!"

Sure it is. It's in dictionaries, including the OED. Did you understand it? Are you English-speaking? If so, it's English. (And I love it when a person correcting someone's English himself makes a mistake in English, like calling it "english.")

I realize the preferred form is "more stupid," but in this case I was using it in parallel with "smarter." It's a matter of style.

Munck says: I don't think they're stupider or smarter than anyone else
Munck did you write this? Does the word Stupider make you educated? Does this make you fall in the catagory of redneck?
Stupider is not a proper english word!

I want Murtha to keep running his mouth!
He just makes his party look stupid!

"One wouldn't want the people in small towns to have a say so in how they are taxed or be allowed to live their lives the way they please."

They have the same say and the same right to live their lives the way they want as everybody else. That's the way democracy works.

I don't think they're stupider or smarter than anyone else. Sure, the smart kids go off to the city when they graduate from high school and never come back, but it would take many, many generations for evolution to have an effect.

Yes. One wouldn't want the people in small towns to have a say so in how they are taxed or be allowed to live their lives the way they please. They need to be sheparded by the sophisticated people in the big cities. Poor, stupid small town people.

I didn't know Murtha was so insightful

REDNECKS....???? ......hardly....!!!
I do not equate the term "redneck" with being conservative. I am a right-wing conservative, much the same as Senator Goldwater. His philosophy of "don't tread on me", in my opinion, would have created a much different United States. One that would be respected and ...yes, FEARED by the rest of the world.

Too bad the American people did not have the will to defend our freedom then,...or now. We have bought into the 'rodney king' plea of 'can't we all just get along?'. NO, we can't.! As long as two humans inhabit the earth 'we cannot get along'..!

We ARE a super power..! Let's ACT like it.!! It never hurts to rattle a few sabres now and then just to keep folks on their toes. And as with President Truman, drop a couple of HOT ones and even the most ardent adversary will make an attitude adjustment.

REDNECK... well, aside from a lifestyle whose motto is 'PROUD TO BE STUPID', Want some proof..??? Tune into 'MY BIG REDNECK WEDDING' on the CMT channel sometime...!!! This is NOT 'conservative'. it is more like 'the missing link'..!!

I felt like I needed a shower after watching that program. Those images seem to be burned into my mind, even my eyes are still sore.

Never in my life have I seen SO MANY HUMAN ODDITIES in one location WITHOUT A 'stock car race' nearby..!! Some of the scenes were actually 'subtitled' because their lazy language and dialect rendered it impossible to understand.

I actually DID learn something..!! Not ALL the males are called 'BUBBA' ...and not all the females are called 'BUBBALICIOUS'...!!! Thanks, CMT...!!!

Small Towns are, in fact, Small
Fortunately, most of the actual people in Pennsylvania live in cities and suburbs (10M urban vs. 2M rural). And the Obama campaign in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh is stupendous.

"this is this"
The famous existential remark of Robert De Niro in "The Deer Hunter" to John Cazale as they struggle to head up the hills of Western Pennsylvania to hunt might well be addressed to John Murtha.

You can lay down slights Rep. Murtha but at days end, people dislike being insulted and are likely to look at you and say, we are people of your state. We love, live and die.

We also vote. Your insults and sterotypes, well you are what you are and for us, "this is this."
