Democrats Hope for 60 Seat Senate Majority
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 8:02 AM
Yesterday, I noted that the Senate elections might be just as important to us as the presidential election.  Today, the NY Times seems to back up that assertion:

For Democrats hoping the November elections set off a seismic shift in Washington, the dream scenario is not just capturing the White House, but also winning a filibuster-proof majority of 60 seats in the Senate — a luxury no president has enjoyed since Jimmy Carter 30 years ago.

Regardless of who wins the presidency, if the Democrats gain a 60 seat majority in the Senate, get ready for dramatic changes in this country.

The National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) has made it very easy to help avoid this situation.  Check this out.

Operational or philosophical change?
I'll argue that a clean sweep for the Dems, regardless of whether they get to (or depending on who falls, close to) 60, will be enough for the sweeping philosophical changes. I rather doubt that, if they fall short of 60, they will be as circumspect as the Republicans were a couple years ago and keep the filibuster around to be used as a roadblock.

If, however, they do get to 60 (again, 58 or 59 might even be enough), the filibuster will not be a roadblock to their plans. Hence, they'll keep it around in that case as a hedge against losing the majority.

amnesty
The problem is that not enough politicians are not in touch with how the people feel about the issue. I am letting the current office holders in my state know now, I want legal immigration. I am only one voice, but telling everyone I know who agrees with me to do the same. The only way they are going to get it, is to flood their offices with the peoples opinions. If it does'nt work then atleast I tried.

I say
This Congress has been an embarrassment. I say vote the bums out. All of them. Let's start fresh.

Hope you're right, whoever gets elected POTUS is going to try to shove amnesty down our throats. We need as many conservatives in Congress as we can get.

Well that is one, likely to be off set by a pick up in LA; even if we do not win LA they still need to win 8 more. I do not see that happening.

That's one for sure.

It is entirely possible
Consider the way the American people feel about Washington right now. Not only do they not approve of GWB, they totally diapprove of the way Congress is hadnling things. I am more worried about what the Congress will do than what the POTUS will do. Congress can change the entire fabric of our American way of life with a stroke of a liberal pen. It's possible folks. I would suggest you all get off your lazy butts and vote this year or we will be singing the Blues for the next 2 years.

Can you tell me the 9 seats we are going to lose?
Virginia Patriot writes: Friday, March, 07, 2008 9:47 AM
Not Impossible
VA will probably have another D Senator after this election. If McCain doesn't dump Juan Hernandez and drop hos support for amnesty, not only will he lose, but he will drag down other GOP prospects.

impossible
I do not see how the Democrats can reach 60 seats.

Disaster
We better hope that Obama doesn't end up with a 60 seat majority in the Senate, and Pelosi in the House. The ensuing 2 years would be a disaster for this country.
