National Review Endorses Mitt
Posted by: Mary Katharine Ham at 4:32 PM
NRO:
Many conservatives are finding it difficult to pick a presidential candidate. Each of the men running for the Republican nomination has strengths, and none has everything — all the traits, all the positions — we are looking for. Equally conservative analysts can reach, and have reached, different judgments in this matter. There are fine conservatives supporting each of these Republicans.

Our guiding principle has always been to select the most conservative viable candidate. In our judgment, that candidate is Mitt Romney, the former governor of Massachusetts. Unlike some other candidates in the race, Romney is a full-spectrum conservative: a supporter of free-market economics and limited government, moral causes such as the right to life and the preservation of marriage, and a foreign policy based on the national interest. While he has not talked much about the importance of resisting ethnic balkanization — none of the major candidates has — he supports enforcing the immigration laws and opposes amnesty. Those are important steps in the right direction.
NR cites the pull-apart factor for rejecting Huckabee and Rudy:
Uniting the conservative coalition is not enough to win a presidential election, but it is a prerequisite for building on that coalition. Rudolph Giuliani did extraordinary work as mayor of New York and was inspirational on 9/11. But he and Mike Huckabee would pull apart the coalition from opposite ends: Giuliani alienating the social conservatives, and Huckabee the economic (and foreign-policy) conservatives. A Republican party that abandoned either limited government or moral standards would be much diminished in the service it could give the country.
They laud McCain but bash McCain-Feingold and other missteps. They think Fred's conservative, but don't trust his ability to run a large enterprise.

H/t Allah.

We must unify as a party
Other candidates can only encourage the divide along policy lines. The social conservatives run to this one, the fiscal conservatives run to that one, until we are pulled apart and powerless. We must unite behind a capable competent leader who can fight for all of our just conservative causes.

I believe Romney is the only one who can pull us back together. I further believe he is the only one who can get results from government.

NRO nailed it with their logic. Someone had to inject some sense into this race before we become too fractured to mend.

Mitt's the man!
As National Review said, Romney is the most conservative candidate who can also beat Hillary. Huckabee and Giuliani are liberal and Fred is dead. Romney will definitely be getting my vote!

It was a great editorial

Very well thought-out, and soundly explained their position.

Rudy and Huck pull apart the GOP. Romney pulls apart those who want to arm the MSM with a religious litmus test.

Be careful about religious litmus tests you evangelicals who have problems with Mormonism. You may arm the MSM against any future cantidate who has strong faith.

All our faiths have bumps and warts. If the MSM is allowed to disqualify Romney because he's "devout" that microscope can then be turned on any person who so qualifies themself.

Including an evangelical.

Mitt is the best candidate in the field!! This is why the DNC attacks him the most!!

[DNC Press Release Attack Summary:

Governor Mitt Romney (R-MA) – 37% (99 press releases)

Senator John McCain (R-AZ) – 24% (64)
Senator Fred Thompson (R-TN) – 8% (20)

Huge . . .
. . . and hopefully a needed dose of common sense injected into the primary.
