Obama's Economic Plan Would Be a Disaster
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 8:54 AM

Barack Obama will deliver a speech today in NYC on the economy.  The truth is that there is not a single thing  Obama's would do as president that would make you or I more wealthy -- and there is a lot in he would do to make us less wealthy.

An Obama Administration, based on his campaign and his record, would likely include higher income taxes, higher corporate taxes, and, at least, a step closer to socialized healthcare.  And that's just the things we know about ...

Of course, rhetorically, Obama almost always acknowledges both sides of any given argument, which tends to give the false impression that he is open-minded.  The fact that the the non-partisan National Journal named him the most liberal senator in 2007 demonstrates which ideology he always settles on, after acknowledging the other side.

When it comes to the economy, Obama frequently mentions the conservative fiscal policies that have brought us unprecedented wealth since the Reagan Administration -- but at the end of the day -- he looks to FDR's New Deal.  As he wrote in his book:

“But our history should give us confidence that we don’t have to choose between an oppressive, government-run economy and a chaotic and unforgiving capitalism. ... What might such a new economic consensus look like? ... [W]e can begin to modernize and rebuild the social contract that FDR first stitched together in the middle of the last century.” (Barack Obama, The Audacity Of Hope, 2006, pp. 158-159)

Obama's positive rhetoric often belies his Leftist ideology.  Anyone hoping he be a "deliverer" who will invent some sort of hybrid system that provides for a fiscal "third way" -- has not been paying attention to his past positions, or his campaign promises.

While Obama will likely seek to talk-down the economy, harp on the down-turn, and promise government give-aways for supporting him, McCain is actually providing the public with straight talk, and honest solutions.  For example, one of the things McCain supports -- but Obama will all most certainly demagogue against as a "tax cut for the rich" -- is the reasonable and important idea of cutting the corporate tax rate.

McCain realizes the fact that only Japan has a higher corporate tax rate than the U.S., puts us at a strategic disadvantage.  Moreover, he realzes that cutting it-- and the capital gains tax -- would provide an influx of money for businesses to begin creating jobs, building factories, etc. (not bad for a guy who supposedly isn't an "expert" on the economy.)

McCain's plan would mean 401 K's would also bounce back by the end of the year, and that would be good news for many of us (something like 60 percent of Americans now "investors" in some form or another -- so this will be harder for Obama to criticize than it would have been in the past).

And because people who create businesses today are concerned about long-term economics, a long-term solution is also a short-term solution.

If Americans hope to make this a short-term down-turn, they will resist the temptation to support Obama's long-term Leftist fiscal policies.

a step closer to socialized healthcare.
And, what solution do the Conservatives have with respect to the fact that inflation today is in part being driven by Healthcare costs?

Answer: none.

Which is the problem. The only "ideas" the conservatives have are "stay the course" and "let the market forces prevail."

Unfortunately market forces have prevailed in the last 20 years and look where that's gotten us.

Conservatives use to be the party of ideas. No more. And that's the problem.

John McCain has no answer to the war in Iraq, oil prices, health care, the falling dollar, or the troubles with the mortgage crisis except "stay the course" and "let the market forces prevail."

Yeah, well, that's not ideas. That's not an electable position either.

The Democrats, with there bad ideas, will prevail because to the public bad ideas are preferable to no ideas.

You are confusing Republicans for conservatives. Until you can separate the two, your world won't make sense. We conservatives have been kicked out of the party. Where have you been?

The U.S. health care system is

still the best in the world. Where would you rather go for health care? Who else is spending the money necessary to create effective drugs and medical treatments?

The cost problem is related to market factors. Competition has been diminished in the current system. Right now, the private sector (health insurers) are allowed to cherry pick the healthy members of society and to discriminate against the sick.

Until the federal government passes a law requiring health insurers to charge everyone the same amount for the same coverage, regardless of the person's state of health, we will continue to have rising healthcare costs.

Health insurers only compete for the healthy. This means those with the highest healthcare costs must rely on the government and tax dollars. When the government subsidizes something, that something's cost goes up and that is what is happening in health care.

This is shocking
A republican calling a democrat's plan a disaster! this is too much..what is happening to this world. I mean what's next - a democrat calling a republican's plan a disaster!

You're talking to yourself eddie.

I'm talking politics. The American people believe the health care costs are out of control, much as they believe oil and gas prices are out of control.

Both have market forces explanations: oil mainly reflecting new demand and the falling dollar.

But if John McCain keeps saying "let market forces prevail" he won't get elected.

Our economy has gotten well beyond the point of the average American even coming close to understanding that. Yet Americans vote their wallet.

Republicans don't have a solution for that gap.

More On Obama's Economic Plan
For a more complete assessment of Obama's economic plan, please read:

http://www.currencytrading.net/2008/10-surprising-economic- implications-of-a-barack-obama-presidency/

Key graph:

"Democrats are generally viewed with skepticism when it comes to the economy. With his emphasis on consumer and worker rights, as well as in maximizing employment and wages instead of efficiency, Barack Obama is set to become the rule of his Party, rather than the exception. At the same time, his fair-trade brand of protectionism and his threats to limit unfair competition from abroad could reverse the trade deficit, which has surged since the 1980’s. The trade imbalance could also be narrowed by the switch to alternative energies, many of which could be generated domestically. Finally, his promise of fiscal responsibility stands in stark contrast to the runaway government deficits of the Bush administration. With a healthy economy and budgetary prudence, he could even hope to begin paying down the national debt. While less conducive to economic growth, protectionism and fiscal discipline would stem the twin deficits, and go a long way towards restoring confidence in the Dollar."

The reason for the high cost of health care is due to compliance cost. That is in plain words what it costs health care providers to fill out all the needless paper work required by the Imperial Federal Government. If this were reduced to just the facts ma'am, the cost of health care would drop, and market forces would prevail. simple as that...

healthcare
The rise of healthcare costs is also due to people who are uninsured and don't pay their bills. I am not for socialized healthcare, I strongly oppose it, the sad reality is it is only going to get worse when all 3 candidates whoever wins grant amnesty and this country gets flooded with new people.

I agree with your assessment. The amnesty fiasco is just the start. We are looking at 20-25 million illegal aliens in this country. If they get amnesty, that will just cause more millions to move north. What do we do when the whole of Mexico is here?

No Country For Sheep

Actively, consistently, continuously enforcing existing laws will send the message that we are serious about our laws. Changing them to accomodate people breaking them sends the opposite message. And not just to those already here. Millions are waiting to see which tack we take. Amnesty will set off a stampede like we have not seen before. Enforcement will start the flow in the other direction as the jobs and benefits dry up. Those pushing for amnesty are for surrendering to the demands of the illegal aliens and their employers, abandoning the rule of law and surrendering our sovereignty. We should not change the laws to suit those breaking them.

The primary responsibility of the U.S. government is to protect the territorial integrity and people of this country. They have completely abdicated this responsibility. Both parties have been complicit in this. We are being told it is not possible to control our borders, enforce our laws, and thereby control our destiny as a nation. Hogwash. We are being sold out by corporations intent on importing workers for jobs that can't be exported with the taxpayers paying the true costs, financial and human. If we act like sheep and don't stop the inundation across our borders, we will lose our country without a bleat.

use your voices
I don't know if politicians don't care how Americans think on the issue or they do not know what we think. Numbers USA.com is a good way to start. I also e-mail congress and Senate in my state. This will take thousands to do the same in their states. If anyone cares they need to get active. I hope others will do the same.

BUSHINOMIC CRAZINESS
Interesting that you come to these naive conclusions based on what you THINK Obama would say.. NOT on what he said.. Only rightwingnuts have the audacity to actually believe people would swallow this diatribe.

In conclusion.. McSame ..who admits he knows little about the economy would continue the disasterous monetary and ecomomic policies of the bush comedy team..
If you want a recession that will last for years then by all means vote McSame in November.

On the other hand if you really care about curing our sick economy then following the prescription of someone as brilliant as Obama would be the INTELLIGENT and PRUDENT thing to do.. Of course these are charactaristics sadly missing on the blinded by bushworld zealots on the right side of the aisle..

thoughts to the fool
If you are part of a society that votes, then do so. There may be no candidates and no measures you want to vote for...but there are certain to be ones you want to vote against. In case of doubt, vote against. By this rule you will rarely go wrong. If this is too blind for your taste, consult some well-meaning fool (there is always one around) and ask his advice. Then vote the other way. This enables you to be a good citizen (if such is your wish) without spending the enormous amount of time on it that truly intelligent exercise of franchise requires.
