William F. Buckley Remembered

Anyone who is a conservative -- especially a conservative writer (or even blogger) -- owes tremendous a debt of gratitude to William F. Buckley.  He made it cool to be a conservative, and in the modern age, he made it possible to be both an intellecutal -- and a conservative.

Here's what Morton Blackwell has said about him:

Those who came of age politically in the 1980s or later can hardly comprehend the influence Bill Buckley had on the modern conservative movement.

He was, by far, the most attractive and thrilling conservative intellect for decades, and more than equal in debate to any liberal intellectual, as we learned on many occasions. Conservative students of my generation, confronted with an overwhelming liberal (and often unbearably smug) faculty, were greatly reassured by the knowledge that Buckley could smash the arguments of anyone on the liberal side ...

WFB remembered (#1)
A prodigious author, indefatigable thinker & courageous leader. His works live on in each of us as we endeavor to follow in his footsteps by living & voting as intellectually honest conservatives.

"The heights by great men reached and kept
Were not obtained by sudden flight,
But they, while their companions slept,
Were toiling upward in the night."
--Longfellow

Mr. Buckley
When I was a young girl, I thought William F. Buckley was a very attractive man, and enjoyed listening to his brilliant arguments. Now I'm married to a good guy who can argue the big issues. I'm glad I had such good taste, and thank you to Mr. Buckley for helping to form my idea of what is appealing in a man.

The First
I certainly remember when 'The National review' was the ONLY place where conservative thought could be found. I used to steal my father's copies (very New Age of me). We all owe WFB a vast debt.

two quotes
"Truth is a demure lady, much too ladylike to knock you on your head and drag you to her cave. She is there, but people must want her, and seek her out." --William F. Buckley, Jr.

"Scientists are people who build the Brooklyn Bridge and then buy it." --William F. Buckley, Jr.
